Tom Izzo recaps blowout win over Alcorn State

Finally, this Michigan State basketball team has started to look like the team we were promised this offseason, as the Spartans had their second consecutive blowout win, this time over Alcorn State.

After the game, MSU head coach Tom Izzo spoke to the media to recap his team’s performance, and give a funny anecdote about his reaction to an insane Coen Carr dunk.

You can see the best quotes from that session below.

Michigan State basketball defense suffocates Alcorn State, Spartans cruise to 32-point victory

Michigan State defense suffocates Alcorn State, Spartans cruise to 32-point victory

After a slow start to the season, Michigan State basketball really needed their last two games against Butler and Alcorn State. On Sunday, the Spartans got their second straight win, this time against the aforementioned Alcorn State, handling the Braves 81 to 49.

If there is one thing that has been consistent this season despite the troubling losses it’s been the defense, which has looked strong all year and again on Sunday. What hasn’t been consistent has been the shooting. On Sunday, the Spartans shot 40-percent from three, with Tre Holloman leading the way with five threes and a career-high of 17 points.

Jaden Akins also had a nice game, which is good to see since this team’s ceiling is largely tied to his play. Akins finished with 13 points and shot 50-percent from three. He also recorded five rebounds and three assists.

With Tyson Walker out tonight and a big lead intact, we got to see a little more court-time for the freshmen tonight, to some mixed results. Jeremy Fears Jr. and Coen Carr, the two freshmen who have played the most, looked good once again tonight. The two freshmen combined went 9-for-11 from the field and scored 20 points.

Xavier Booker, probably the most high-profile of the Spartans’ freshmen, will still be a work-in-progress in the beginning of this year. He went 2-for-8 and scored 5 points.

The Spartans will face another huge test on Thanksgiving when they face No. 3 ranked Arizona in Palm Springs.

Tulane vs Alcorn State Game Preview

Why Alcorn State Will Win

The Braves know how to control the tempo.

They struggled to convert third down chances in the 31-27 loss to Stephen F. Austin, and they were destroyed in the time of possession battle, but normal the offense is amazing at making teams play at its pace.

There won’t be a slew of mistakes and turnovers, the offense ran wild in the loss – it’ll hit a Tulane defense that gave up 200 rushing yards in the 42-10 win over UMass – with Jargon Howard a dangerous back who can break off yards in chunks.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Tulane Will Win

Yeah, the third down stops.

the Lumberjacks were able to convert third down after third down against Alcorn State, and now it’s up to Tulane to do the same.

The offense wasn’t razor sharp against Umass, but it was balanced, it didn’t take too many chances, and there weren’t issues capping off drives with points. Tyjae Spears ran for three touchdowns, QB Michael Pratt should continue his dual threat ways against the Brave defensive front, and …

What’s Going To Happen

There won’t be a problem.

Tulane looked great in the opener, it’ll get through this without working too hard, and then it’s on to the date at Kansas State with a chance to make a big statement.

The running game will work better this week – it wasn’t bad against UMass – and the O won’t give away the turnovers Alcorn State will need.

LSU women’s team makes quick work of Alcorn State

LSU didn’t waste time putting this game away.

The LSU Tigers women’s basketball team scored a season-high in points on Wednesday night. The No.22 ranked Tigers beat Alcorn State 100-36 to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Khayla Pointer led LSU; she scored 19 points, shooting 7-10 from the field. In addition, Pointer hit 2-4 three-point shots while also grabbing ten rebounds. Alexis Morris added on 7-9 shooting from the field. All 13 LSU players scored in the game on Wednesday night.

LSU shot 61.3% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc. They also won the rebounding battle 46-21. Alcorn State turned the ball over 26 times in the game.

Maya Claytor led Alcorn State in scoring with 13 points. However, this game was over quickly; Alcorn State only scored double-digit points in one of the four quarters.

The Tigers are playing good basketball, looking much improved, but let’s see what happens when conference play starts and games get a little more challenging down the road.

LSU was supposed to play the University of New Orleans Saturday, but the game was canceled due to health and safety protocols. So instead, the Tigers will play Bradley at noon CT Saturday at the Pete Maravich Center in Baton Rouge. Bradley is 3-4, and LSU will look to improve to 9-1 on the season with a win Saturday.

Auburn will need new opening opponent as SWAC postpones fall sports

Alcorn State will not be able to play at Jordan-Hare Stadium as the SWAC has postponed all fall sports.

Auburn will have to find a new season opening opponent and soon.

On Monday, the SWAC announced that it has postponed all fall sports, meaning Alcorn State, the Tigers’ opponent set for Sept. 5 in Jordan-Hare Stadium, will not be coming.

This might become a non-issue if the SEC decided to follow the Big Ten and Pac-12’s lead and play a conference-only schedule but, for now, Gus Malzahn’s team will hope to find a new opponent for the opener.

N.C. A&T and Alcorn State combine for 108 points in Celebration Bowl thriller

They score 49 points in the third quarter alone.

Anyone who took the under in Saturday’s Celebration Bowl game between North Carolina A&T and Alcorn State lost big and didn’t have to wait until the end of the game to find that out.

The Aggies won their third straight Celebration Bowl and fourth in five years with a wild 64-44 victory in this high-scoring thriller.

Not only did they hit the combined 100-point mark, but the 108 total points are the most scored in Celebration Bowl history, according to ESPN Stats & Info. The under/over was 52, and these teams blew past that early in the third quarter — when they combined for 49 points in those 15 minutes alone.

The clear star of the game was N.C. A&T quarterback Kylil Carter. On 1st-and-10 with about 10 minutes left in the third, he connected with Ron Hunt for an epic 43-yard touchdown and a 38-17 lead with the extra point.

That was one of several monster bombs from Carter, who finished with a career-high six touchdowns, which also tied an N.C. A&T record. He went 18-for-30 for 364 yards, another career mark, and no interceptions.

But he actually wasn’t responsible for the the play that broke the combined 100-point mark. That was a crazy one worthy of this exciting matchup.

With a little less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Alcorn State was still very much in this game. The Braves scored a one-yard touchdown to shrink their deficit to 55-44. But then on the extra point attempt, the snap was way too high and breezed over the holder’s head, and N.C. A&T defensive back Amir McNeill recovered it and took it all the way back to the opposite end zone.

What a great game. Here’s a look at some of the other incredible highlights from this matchup:

Watch N.C. A&T’s and Alcorn State’s dazzling Celebration Bowl halftime band performances

SO GOOD.

The North Carolina A&T Aggies had a commanding 24-10 halftime lead over Alcorn State in Saturday’s Celebration Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, thanks in large part to two 50-plus-yard touchdown passes from quarterback Kylil Carter. Should NC A&T win, it will be its third straight Celebration Bowl victory and second consecutive one over the Braves.

Early in the second quarter, Carter connected with wide receiver Elijah Bell for a 53-yard touchdown to get the Aggies on the board, giving them a 7-3 lead.

And after Alcorn State responded with a touchdown of its own, Carter struck again, this time finding wide receiver Zachary Leslie for a monster 59-yard touchdown play only a few minutes later.

But in addition to these huge bombs downfield, both teams’ bands stunned during their halftime performances. That’s hardly surprising, especially since N.C. A&T finished No. 1 in the ESPN/The Undefeated HBCU Band Rankings this season, and these performances are as much fun to watch as the game, if not more so.

And thanks to The Undefeated, we can watch them over and over. So here’s N.C. A&T’s Blue and Gold Marching Machine:

More about the band via The Undefeated:

N.C. A&T’s Blue and Gold Marching Machine, which was tops in the September rankings, ended the season No. 1 because of No. 2 ratings in auxiliaries and musicality, No. 3 in percussion, No. 5 in drum majors, No. 6 in drill and design in the cumulative rankings for the season. The Aggies were No. 2 in the preseason rankings and in October, and were never out of the top five during the season.

And here’s Alcorn State’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite:

At the time of this post, N.C. A&T had a 52-31 lead in the third quarter.
