Alabama hires Charlie Strong to defensive analyst role

Charlie Strong served on Alabama’s coaching staff in 2020 as a defensive analyst. He will return to Alabama in 2023 in the same role.

Charlie Strong will be back on the Crimson Tide sidelines in 2023. According to Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger, Strong has been hired to be a defensive analyst at Alabama.

Strong served as a defensive analyst at Alabama in 2020. He has since served as inside linebackers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Most recently, he was the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Miami.

Interestingly enough, Strong served alongside Kevin Steele as co-defensive coordinator for the Hurricanes. Steele will be Alabama’s defensive coordinator this season and Strong will be working under him.

Strong has a background as a defensive coordinator and is good at organizing gameplans. With Austin Armstron’s departure, Strong could be in charge of helping create the gameplan each week for the Crimson Tide. A specific role for Strong has not been determined at this time.

Whatever the case may be, head coach Nick Saban made a wise decision to bring an experienced assistant coach back to Tuscaloosa.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama football program.

The top stories involving the Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday morning.

Good morning and welcome back to your Tuesday edition of Alabama Morning Drive. Even with the football team on spring break, we have some news to report regarding the coaching staff. We will also take a look at a familiar face who will be calling Alabama basketball’s round of 64 matchup in the NCAA Tournament.

There is never a dull moment in the Alabama athletics news cycle and Roll Tide Wire will be here every step of the way.

Let’s get right to it!

First…football coaching staff changes…

REPORT: Todd Grantham considering offer to join the Alabama coaching staff

This would certainly be an interesting hire by Nick Saban

Nick Saban has already made four additions to his coaching staff this offseason in Coleman Hutzler (special teams and OLB), Eric Wolford (OL), Travaris Robinson (CB), and Joe Cox (TE). The legendary coach may not be finished either.

A report from Football Scoop has indicated that coach Saban has offered a position on the staff to long-time SEC defensive coach Todd Grantham.

Grantham has been in coaching since 1990 when he became the defensive ends and inside linebackers coach for Virginia Tech. Grantham has had several stops both in college and the NFL. Grantham has held the defensive coordinator title at Georgia, Mississippi State, and Florida.

Grantham is known for his aggressive and attacking style on the defensive side of the ball and would certainly bring a lot of experience and knowledge to the coaching staff in Tuscaloosa.

Pete Golding should have defensive play-calling role diminished

Given his track-record, will Pete Golding be in charge of the Alabama defense moving forward?

Alabama would have liked to come out of Week 5 with far better results and an unblemished record. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the cards against Jimbo Fisher and his Texas A&M squad.

Much of the blame for the lackluster performance has been placed on third-year defensive coordinator Pete Golding. I can’t say that the blame isn’t warranted. Aside from the outlier, against Ole Miss in Week 4, the defense has performed well below the benchmark that was expected of them to start the season.

Even with significant losses to Dylan Moses, Christian Barmore and Patrick Surtain II to the NFL Draft, the Crimson Tide still brought back a ton of talent. On the defensive line, LaBryan Ray, Phil Mathis, D.J. Dale, Justin Eboigbe, Byron Young and Tim Smith all have the talent and experience to make an impact. It just hasn’t come to fruition, yet. Alabama’s D-line has been ran through and pushed around all year, and one has to wonder if the schemes aren’t doing anything to help them.

Losing Christopher Allen to injury hasn’t done the Tide any favors, either, but when you know the nature of Alabama, the next man up should be just as capable as his predecessor. Sure, he may not have much experience, but experience is gained in playing the games and getting the reps on the practice field.

On the back-end, plenty of returning players were poised to improve greatly when compared to last year, it just hasn’t happened.

During the Texas A&M game, the defensive performance in the first half was not good. Texas A&M’s backup quarterback, Zach Calzada, completed 16 of his first 17 passes. Coverage in the back-end lacked most of the evening, and part of that can be blamed on the defensive line not getting off blocks, giving Calzada enough time to go through his progressions easily. The coverage schemes, at this point, may be too complicated given the strengths of the defense. Simplifying the defense would be beneficial. Disguising the coverage even a little would absolutely be beneficial.

It’s never good when a quarterback knows exactly what’s in front of him. That has happened all year. Nobody in coverage gives a look pre-snap that changes after the play begins. It’s possible to simplify a defense while disguising coverage. It’s as simple as changing the physical positions of DBs prior to the snap. That, alone, is good enough to confuse a QB and make him believe that he is seeing one look while actually getting another.

Consider this, Pete Golding has helped just one player on his defenses since his promotion in 2019 get picked in the first round of the NFL Draft, that was CB Patrick Surtain II.

Another consideration: Pete Golding has had his hands on multiple five-star recruits at all levels of the defense, and a large majority of them haven’t panned out. Players earn the coveted fifth star when they’re likely to be a future first-round NFL Draft pick. That’s why there are never more than 32 five-stars in any given recruiting class. So, what’s the issue? Why can’t Pete Golding design a defense to play to the strengths and minimize the weaknesses?

When watching the Texas A&M game again, the defense in the second half was much improved. Who engineered this vast amelioration? I’m under the impression, and have good reason to believe that Nick Saban and Charles Kelly relieved Golding of his defensive play-calling duties following the halftime break.

It worked impeccably, until the last two drives. I believe that Saban gave Golding the chance to call those last two drives for his job. The results were telling. Moving forward, I fully expect Saban to allow Kelly to assist him with the play-calling. While Golding will be kept on to keep up appearances, I truly don’t expect him to have much of a hand in the defense other than his specialty, linebackers, moving forward.

After this season, I’m calling it now, Pete Golding will not be Alabama’s defensive coordinator.

I wouldn’t be surprised, at all, if he is relieved prior to the end of the season, however, it’s hard to imagine Saban would make a change that drastic mid-season.

Report: Robert Gillespie set to become new RB coach for Alabama

Alabama has found its replacement for Charles Huff. North Carolina’s Robert Gillespie is coming over to coach the RBs in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama continues to rebuild its coaching staff after a slew of departures. Of course, that’s part of winning a national championship, and Nick Saban has a fantastic track record of reloading the staff.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t a headache, however. But the good news is that it looks like the Crimson Tide have found a new running backs coach. According to Bruce Feldman with The Athletic, it will be Robert Gillespie from North Carolina.

The move was desperately needs after associate head coach/running backs coach Charles Huff left to take the head coaching gig at Marshall. He had been in Tuscaloosa for two seasons after coming over form Mississippi State.

Gillespie has done fantastic work for the Tar Heels. He spent three seasons in Chapel Hill, and the results were impressive. His first year was somewhat underwhelming, but look the stats for Michael Carter and Javonte Williams over the last two:

  • Carter: 2,248 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns
  • Javonte Williams: 2,073 rushing yards, 24 touchdowns

The two combined for 2,385 yards and 28 touchdowns in only 11 games in 2020, and they also added another 572 yards and five scores as receivers out of the backfield.

Prior to his time at North Carolina, Gillespie was at the University of Tennessee. There, he worked with running backs such as Alvin Kamara, Jalen Hurd and John Kelly.

Gillespie should be an excellent replacement for Huff.

Report: Georgia football to likely hire famous Alabama strength coach

The Georgia Bulldogs are likely set to hire famous Alabama Crimson Tide strength coach Scott Cochran

The Georgia Bulldogs are likely set to hire famous Alabama Crimson Tide strength coach Scott Cochran. Cochran, a key staffer under Nick Saban, is expected to have an on-field coaching position when he joins UGA. Cecil Hurt and Bruce Feldman reported the news:

If the news holds true, then it is a big development for Kirby Smart and Georgia. Cochran is considered an essential part of Alabama’s powerhouse program:

Kirby Smart initially tried to get Cochran to join his staff in Athens when Georgia hired him. Nick Saban and Alabama lured Cochran to stay at home. Now, Cochran will have an on-field position at UGA, where he’ll hope to make a similar impact on the program as he did at Alabama.
