Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 52 jersey number

The New England Patriots are officially 52 days away from opening their 2023 regular season schedule at home against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles. So we’re celebrating the upcoming season with our ongoing countdown series that names every Patriots player that has ever worn a No. 52 jersey.

There have been multiple linebackers throughout franchise history that have cemented their legacy when wearing the number. Players such as Ted Johnson and Johnny Rembert even made All-Decade teams.

The most recent player to wear the number was former Patriots linebacker Harvey Langi. Rookie offensive lineman Jake Andrews also wore it during the spring practices.

49ers re-sign DL Akeem Spence to practice squad

The #49ers re-signed Akeem Spence to the practice squad.

The 49ers on Wednesday continued their bye week roster moves. They added defensive lineman Akeem Spence to their practice squad just one day after releasing him from the active roster.

Spence played in five games while on San Francisco’s active roster.  He didn’t start any contests, but he was a regular contributor in the defensive line rotation and played a season-high 37 snaps in Week 6 against the Falcons. Spence posted six tackles in his five games of work.

Injuries on the defensive line forced the 49ers to activate Spence from their practice squad, but with their health improving his roster spot became expendable. Still, having a veteran DL presence in the building is valuable for San Francisco in the event they experience more adversity with availability at that position.

49ers roster moves: DL Akeem Spence elevated from practice squad

The #49ers are elevating DL Akeem Spence to the active roster with Arik Armstead (foot) listed as ‘questionable.’

The 49ers on Saturday announced defensive lineman Akeem Spence would be elevated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game in Denver.

With defensive tackle Arik Armstead listed as ‘questionable,’ Spence gives the 49ers some insurance if Armstead is unable to suit up. Armstead is dealing with a foot injury and didn’t practice at all in the lead up to Week 3. His status remains unchanged though. He’s still ‘questionable’ and hasn’t been downgraded.

Spence, 30, has played in 110 games with 57 starts since joining the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2013. He’s posted 10.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss. The 49ers signed Spence early in training camp. He was let go at final cuts and the next day joined San Francisco’s practice squad.

If Spence plays in Denver it would be his 2022 regular-season debut.

49ers sign Akeem Spence, place Maurice Hurst on IR

Maurice Hurst is headed to IR after suffering a torn biceps, and the 49ers are signing Akeem Spence to a 1-year deal.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed veteran defensive tackle Akeem Spence to a one-year deal, the team announced Monday.

The move comes after defensive tackle Maurice Hurst was placed on injured reserve with a torn biceps suffered during Friday’s training camp practice. The injury is expected to sideline Hurst for the entire 2022 season.

Spence is a former fourth-round selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013. He’s had stops with the Buccaneers (2013-16), Detroit Lions (2017), Miami Dolphins (2018), Philadelphia Eagles (2019), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019) and New England Patriots (2020).

Spence’s most recent stops were with the Washington Commanders and Denver Broncos last season. He appeared in one game with the Commanders before being released on Dec. 24, 2021. He signed with the Broncos practice squad shortly after, where he spent the rest of the year.

In his nine-year career, Spence has appeared in 110 games, with 57 starts, totaling 123 tackles, 10.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Report: Patriots bring in veteran defensive tackle for visit

The Patriots are doing everything possible to keep depth on the defensive line.

The New England Patriots are continuing to add depth during a time of uncertainty because of the coronavirus and injuries.

New England brought in 28-year-old defensive tackle Akeem Spence on Tuesday for a visit, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. Spence was drafted in the fourth round in 2013 and he’s spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,  Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Spence has been reliable for the teams he’s played for and he carries a 6-foot-1, 303 pound frame. He’s been out of the league since this past spring, when he had a stint with the Jaguars.

The Patriots recently claimed Carl Davis and Isaiah Mack — making sure to solidify the offensive line that’s been hurting.

Bills workout 4 DTs, including Akeem Spence

Buffalo Bills hold workouts for defensive tackles including Akeem Spence.

On Friday, the Buffalo Bills kept their free agent workout training rolling. According to the NFL’s transaction wire, the Bills worked out four players, all of which were defensive tackles. The most prominent name on the list was Akeem Spence.

A former fourth-round pick of the Bucs in 2013, Spence has also played the Lions, Jaguars, Dolphins and Eagles. In 103 NFL games, the 28-year-old has 10.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss. Interestingly, Spence recently said that he believes the NFL should cancel the upcoming season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The other three defensive tackles the Bills worked out were Daryle Banfield, Toby Johnson and Gabe Wright.

Wright was a fourth-round pick himself in 2015, but most recently ended up playing in the XFL. He’s appeared in only 15 NFL games and hasn’t played in the league since 2018. Johnson went undrafted in 2015 and has appeared in two career games. He also played in the XFL. Banfield was a undrafted rookie in 2019 and was with the Bears briefly.

While the Bills did workout multiple tackles, that doesn’t mean the team will be signing one. Teams often do so for intel on players later in the season in case injury strikes and at that point the club needs to add depth. The Bills do have roster slots open following player movement this week, including the release of kicker Stephen Hauschka.

Starting defensive tackle Star Lotulelei had previously outed out of playing in the 2020 season due to COVID-19.
