49ers sign Akeem Spence, place Maurice Hurst on IR

Maurice Hurst is headed to IR after suffering a torn biceps, and the 49ers are signing Akeem Spence to a 1-year deal.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed veteran defensive tackle Akeem Spence to a one-year deal, the team announced Monday.

The move comes after defensive tackle Maurice Hurst was placed on injured reserve with a torn biceps suffered during Friday’s training camp practice. The injury is expected to sideline Hurst for the entire 2022 season.

Spence is a former fourth-round selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013. He’s had stops with the Buccaneers (2013-16), Detroit Lions (2017), Miami Dolphins (2018), Philadelphia Eagles (2019), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019) and New England Patriots (2020).

Spence’s most recent stops were with the Washington Commanders and Denver Broncos last season. He appeared in one game with the Commanders before being released on Dec. 24, 2021. He signed with the Broncos practice squad shortly after, where he spent the rest of the year.

In his nine-year career, Spence has appeared in 110 games, with 57 starts, totaling 123 tackles, 10.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
