Could the Cleveland Browns be a landing spot for AJ McCarron?

A potential landing spot for AJ McCarron!

The 2022 NFL season is right around the corner and former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback, [autotag]AJ McCarron[/autotag], is in search of a new home. The eight-year veteran has spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons.

While there are many teams that could use McCarron as a knowledgeable backup, the Cleveland Browns may be his best chance to see the field for some meaningful snaps. With a potential Deshaun Watson suspension looming, the Browns are anticipating they will need to add a little more depth at the quarterback position.

The Browns recently traded former first overall pick, Baker Mayfield, to the Carolina Panthers, but they still have veteran Jacoby Brissett on the roster. Brissett would probably sit slightly higher on the depth chart than McCarron.

McCarron did not play his rookie season, however, since then he has appeared in 17 games and completed 109 out of 174 passes for 62.6% completion and has gone for 1,173 yards and six touchdowns to only three interceptions.

Former Alabama star QB AJ McCarron is ready to make NFL return

The former Alabama star QB is ‘just waiting for a call’ to return to the NFL.

[autotag]AJ McCarron[/autotag] has made a name for himself in the NFL as one of the most reliable backups in the league. Unfortunately for McCarron, an ACL injury during the 2021 preseason has left him without a team.

McCarron joined Good Morning Football on Monday and expressed that he has recovered from his injury and is ready to join an NFL team and help the franchise.

McCarron had the following to say while on the NFL Network:

“I feel great. I was blessed to have a great team around me with Dr. (Lyle) Cane, our doctor at Alabama, and Kevin Wilk, who I did a bunch of my rehab with. I got cleared at four-and-a-half months out from surgery, so I’ve just been working on the strength and getting everything back normal, and I really feel great right now.”

“You never know what your future holds, what it is in this game, so I’m just ready, waiting for a call. But right now, I’m enjoying my time off and being able to be a dad and being around my three boys for the first time in a while.”

McCarron helped lead Alabama to two national championships as the starting quarterback in Tuscaloosa during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor McCarron’s journey back to the NFL.

WATCH: A.J. McCarron well ahead of schedule on ACL recovery

A.J. McCarron looks extremely well just a few months removed from ACL surgery!

Former Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron has been in the NFL since 2014, but has not been able to work himself into a starting role. Before the 2021 NFL season kicked off, he suffered a torn ACL in a preseason game for the Atlanta Falcons.

Now, McCarron is seven months removed from knee surgery and is already back to throwing and moving around.

In a video shared to Twitter, McCarron can be seen moving quickly and planting his feet as he throws. Seeing as he is only a few months removed from surgery, he is way ahead of schedule.

McCarron is currently an unrestricted free agent in the NFL, and by the looks of his training, he is ready to sign with a team for the upcoming 2022 season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow A.J. McCarron as he continues to recover from ACL surgery and looks to return to the NFL.

Every Alabama football season-opening starting quarterback for the last 20 years

Revisit all the quarterbacks who started in the Crimson Tide’s season-opening games over the last 20 years!

Alabama football fell just short of the national championship last season, but there’s good reason to expect them to make another run for title No. 19 in 2022. For starters, the Crimson Tide will get back quarterback [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] for at least one more season.

Young was a first-year starter in 2021 as a sophomore with the program. Some had questioned whether he would be able to follow up the likes of those who came before him: Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts.

The young quarterback responded in the best way possible. He won the Heisman Trophy.

With Young being the clear and undisputed starting quarterback for 2022, let’s go back in time and revisit the last 20 season-opening quarterbacks for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama Football History: The top 20 all-time leading passers

The all-time leading passers in Alabama Football history!

Alabama Football is rooted not just in college football, but the sport as a whole. Some of the greatest players to play the game did their time at the collegiate level with the Crimson Tide.

Among those players were some stellar quarterbacks.

Last season, true sophomore quarterback [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] won the Heisman Trophy, Alabama’s fourth overall, but the first time a Crimson Tide quarterback earned it.

Recently, the quarterback play for Alabama has picked up tremendously, but there are plenty of names from the past that will brig back memories of a time before Young, [autotag]Mac Jones[/autotag], [autotag]Tua Tagovailoa[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Hurts[/autotag].

We break down the top 20 passers in Trojans history. A group that includes a Heisman recipient, a handful of first-round draft selections and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Falcons QB AJ McCarron out for season with ACL injury

With rookie Feleipe Franks as the lone quarterback behind Matt Ryan, the Falcons are in the market for a third QB.

The Atlanta Falcons were limited to just one quarterback for the majority of Saturday’s preseason game against the Dolphins after AJ McCarron went down with an apparent knee injury.

McCarron was in obvious duress on the sideline, and got an MRI done Sunday morning which confirmed he has a torn ACL, and will miss the entire 2021 season.

On the play prior to McCarron’s injury, the former Alabama QB broke off a seven-yard run before being tackled at the first-down marker. Falcons head coach Arthur Smith spoke after the game and gave his sincere sympathies for McCarron.

“I really feel for AJ McCarron,” Smith said in his postgame presser. “Anytime that something like that happens … it’s tough when you know what these guys put into it.”

With rookie Feleipe Franks as the lone quarterback behind Matt Ryan, the Falcons are in the market for a third QB. This can come via the free agency pool or through a trade.

Ranking the Alabama quarterbacks in the NFL

Here is our rankings of all four of the Alabama quarterbacks who are currently on an NFL roster. What do you think?

Alabama struggled to put quarterbacks in the NFL for quite some time. The days of Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Ken Stabler and others have long been over, but with Nick Saban’s arrival, that is beginning to change.

We’ve seen Saban quarterbacks such as John Parker Wilson and Greg McElroy see short stints in the NFL, but since then, there have been several get drafted — and stick around. Four total to be exact.

Below we rank those four signal callers as far as their NFL career outlook. Not the success they had in college, but where do things stand heading into the 2021 season. There is some looking beyond just this year, but it’s mainly where are they at today.

Falcons sign quarterback AJ McCarron to one-year deal

When the Falcons passed on Ohio State’s Justin Fields for Florida tight end Kyle Pitts on day one of the 2021 NFL draft, it was clear the team was going all in with Matt Ryan for another year at least.

When the Falcons passed on Ohio State’s Justin Fields for Florida tight end Kyle Pitts on day one of the 2021 NFL draft, it was clear the team was going all in with Matt Ryan for another year at the very least.

Despite there still being some decent quarterback prospects available as round two is set to begin, Atlanta agreed to terms with free agent AJ McCarron on Friday on a one-year deal to replace Matt Schaub as Ryan’s backup.

McCarron, a fifth-round pick by the Bengals in 2014, was once a sought after backup after playing well in relief of starter Andy Dalton in 2015. That would be about the extent of McCarron’s NFL career, though, as he would only go on to start one game in the following five seasons with the Bengals, Raiders and Texans.

Appearing in 17 games (four starts), the 30-year-old veteran has thrown for 1,173 yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions and a career passer rating of 86.7.

Will A.J. McCarron be the Houston Texans starting QB for 2021?

Former Alabama star quarterback A.J. McCarron could be starting in the NFL for the Houston Texans if Deshaun Watson sits out.

The Houston Texans have had a rough few years. They traded away their star wide reciver for next to nothing, J.J. Watt signed with the Arizona Cardinals and Deshaun Watson still refuses to be affiliated with the organization in any way.

Watson’s demand for a trade does not seem to fit within the model for the Texans’ new front office. They continue to claim that he is not available for trades.

Because of their inability to work with Watson, it has now become clear that he is willing to sit out and not participate in the 2021 NFL seson if it is with the Texans.

Should this happen, former Alabama star quarterback A.J. McCarron would be the presumed starting signal caller.

Now, this is speculation, but unless the Texans’ front office has been searching for a quick replacement through free agency or the draft, McCarron will be the teams starter.

In his seven-year career, McCarron has started four games and has an overall record of 2-2.

Top 5 landing spots for A.J. McCarron in 2021 free agency

A.J. McCarron is set to hi the market after the 2020 season, where he will be an unrestricted free agent. here are five potential landing…

Former Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron has had an interesting time in the NFL. His name remains relevant, and he hardly ever spends time on the market. He’s one of, if not the most wanted backup quarterbacks in the league.

McCarron won three National Championships with the Crimson Tide, but was drafted in round No. 5 of the 2014 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. After spending four seasons there, he has since been bounced around from Buffalo, to Oakland and most recently, Houston.

He’s currently on his second one-year deal with the Texans and is set to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2020 season concludes.

What’s next for the Nick Saban product?

Here are five potential landing spots for A.J. McCarron after the 2020 season:

5. Seattle Seahawks

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

Clearly, McCarron won’t be gunning for Russell Wilson’s starting job. However, Seattle does not have a set option for the 2021 season if Wilson gets injured. Currently, they have only one backup on the active roster, Geno Smith, who is on a one-year deal that is set to expire at the end of the season. While they aren’t going to have buckets of money to spend, due to a limited amount of cap space, McCarron could be a viable option for the Seahawks if they want an inexpensive veteran.
