Peach State defensive lineman recruit lists Clemson as a finalist

Despite already having four defensive lineman commits in its 2023 class, Clemson is in the mix for another Peach State defensive lineman prospect.

Clemson is in contention for another 2023 Peach State prospect.

Announcing the decision on his Instagram, four-star defensive lineman T.J. Searcy has narrowed his team list down to Clemson, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee. 247Sports Composite ranks the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Searcy as the No. 20 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 153 overall prospect.

Playing for Upson-Lee High School (Thomaston, Ga.), Searcy officially visited Clemson on June 3 and has since visited his other three finalists.

As of Monday, the Tigers have four defensive lineman commits in their 2023 class: four-star Vic Burley, four-star Stephiylan Green, four-star David Ojiegbe and four-star AJ Hoffler. Burley, Green and Hoffler are all from Georgia, meaning if Searcy commits to Clemson, the Tigers would have four defensive line commits from the neighboring state.

Clemson has also been listed as a finalist for four-star defensive lineman Keldric Faulk and five-star defensive lineman Peter Woods, who will commit on July 5 and July 8, respectively.

Clemson commits are certainly putting on their recruiting caps as they try to help the Tigers add more top talent to their already stacked 2023 class.

Birmingham (Ala.) Briarwood Christian five-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, Warner Robins (Ga.) four-star defensive lineman Victor Burley and Atlanta (Ga.) Woodward Academy four-star defensive lineman AJ Hoffler have been all over Twitter working to get others — including Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson five-star defensive lineman Peter Woods and Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville four-star defensive lineman Hunter Osborne — to join them aboard Clemson’s 2023 class:

Clemson’s 2023 class is currently ranked in the top five nationally in the Rivals team rankings (No. 3), the 247Sports Composite team rankings (No. 4) and ESPN’s recruiting rankings (No. 5).

As you can see, Clemson’s commits are definitely doing their part to help make this class a special one for the Tigers.

5-star recruiter: New Clemson commits rave about Goodwin

Wesley Goodwin deserves his due.

Clemson’s defensive coordinator waited in the wings. He was Brent Venables’ right-hand man for years. He’s as sharp as they come and one of the soundest defensive minds in the sport, but when he was hired, there were questions about his ability to recruit.

Needless to say, they’ve already been answered.

After signing a trio of linebackers in the class of 2022 — Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) three-star Wade Woodaz, Gaither (Tampa, Fla.) three-star Kobe McCloud and Montgomery (Ala.) Catholic four-star TJ Dudley — Goodwin had his work cut out for him when it came to the rising seniors in the class of 2023.

And to say he did some heavy-lifting would be an understatement.

Clemson has received verbal commitments from two top linebacker prospects in the class of 2023.

Both Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star Jamal Anderson and Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star Dee Crayton verbally pledged to the Tigers after officially visiting Clemson earlier this month.

Anderson (6-4, 200) is ranked as high as the No. 10 outside linebacker and No. 123 overall prospect in the 2023 class by ESPN. While Crayton (6-2, 215) is ranked as high as the nation’s No. 135 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals, which considers him the No. 10 outside linebacker in the country for his class.

“He’s such a great coach and I’m definitely excited to be coached by him,” Crayton told The Clemson Insider after he committed last Saturday. “He’s been recruiting me so hard, even before they offered. As soon as he got the defensive coordinator position, he’s always been talking to me and my family. He’s been constantly recruiting me and I was actually the first linebacker he offered when he got the position, so that definitely played a part.”

After getting to know Goodwin, Crayton wasn’t surprised at how quickly he was able to pick up where things left off. Goodwin assumed Brent Venables current role after Clemson’s former defensive coordinator left to become the head coach at the University of Oklahoma.

“It was a very smooth transition,” Crayton said. “He’s kind of like me. We both have a chillness about us and we hit it off. That relationship, it was easy for me to make. He wouldn’t call me constantly and be annoying. He would call me enough that he would still recruit me very well and just have those conversations and make it feel as natural as possible. I feel like it was definitely meant to be.”

It was also meant to be for Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star defensive end AJ Hoffler, who verbally pledged to Clemson earlier this week. Once he got to know Goodwin and what he was all about, it was a wrap.

“He was already in the building and drawing up plays,” Hoffler said. “So, as far as the scheme goes, I never had concerns about that. I just didn’t know him as a person. But, once I got to know him as a person, everything checked out. I knew that on the field, he’s just as good as any other d-coordinator in the nation — he just hasn’t had the chance to do it in actual games, besides one (Clemson’s 20-13 win over Iowa State in the Cheez-It Bowl).

“It was just getting to know him as a person, because on the field, he’s a really, really good coach. So, once I got to know him as a person, it was good from there.”

Recruits like Hoffler and Crayton have continued to speak glowingly about Goodwin’s recruiter time after time. The success he’s had on the recruiting trail can only go up from here. Goodwin has already earned his stripes as a recruiter in six months with the results speaking for themselves.

Priority four-star defensive lineman puts Clemson in top four, sets commitment date

After already landing four defensive linemen in its 2023 class Clemson is in contention for another four-star prospect.

Clemson could soon add a fifth defensive lineman to its 2023 recruiting class.

Announcing he will make his decision on July 5, four-star defensive lineman Keldric Faulk has narrowed his potential team list down to Auburn, Clemson, Florida and Florida State.

247Sports Composite ranks the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Faulk as the No. 9 defensive lineman and the No. 84 overall 2023 prospect. As a junior in 2021, he had 82 tackles (30 for loss), 11 sacks and six pass breakups.

An Alabama native, Faulk officially visited Clemson on June 3, along with 29 other prospects, many of whom have committed to Clemson. Since June 3, he has also officially visited the other three finalists.

If Faulk chooses the Tigers, he will join Vic Burley, Stephiylan Green, David Ojiegbe and AJ Hoffler as Clemson’s defensive line commits.

Clemson picks up 2nd four-star defensive lineman commit in past two days

Clemson continues to build its 2023 recruiting class, this time adding its fourth four-star defensive line commitment.

Clemson has added a big-time defensive line recruit to its 2023 class for the second time in the past two days.

Announcing his decision at Rome High School in Rome, Ga., four-star defensive lineman Stephiylan Green has committed to Clemson, choosing the Tigers over Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee.

Although Clemson didn’t offer the 6-foot-4, 267-pound Green until June 7, he officially visited on June 3 along with 29 other recruits.

“Ever since I’ve been going up to Clemson it’s felt like a team to me,” Green told 247Sports’ Rusty Mansell. “I have bonded with those guys.”

Green’s commitment comes one day after four-star defensive lineman AJ Hoffler announced his pledge to the Tigers. Along with Green and Hoffler, Clemson has pledges from four-star defensive lineman Vic Burley and four-star edge David Ojiegbe.

Clemson now has 14 commitments to its 2023 class, which before Green’s decision, 247Sports Composite ranked as the No. 4 class in the nation.

Clemson’s latest commit says Tigers ‘got a lot more players coming’

Clemson has picked up 10 commitments from the class of 2023 in the month of June alone. And after each and every announcement, you can count on one of Clemson’s verbal commits to tell you that the Tigers aren’t finished.

Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star defensive end AJ Hoffler became the latest prospect to pledge to Clemson on his mother’s birthday Tuesday.

With Tuesday’s commitment, Hoffler joins a class that includes Briarwood Christian (Birmingham, Ala.) five-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, Warner Robins (Ga.) four-star Vic Burley, St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.) four-star defensive end David Ojiegbe, Vandegrift (Austin, Texas) four-star offensive lineman Ian Reed, Westlake (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star cornerback Avieon Terrell, First Baptist Academy (Naples, Fla.) four-star tight end Olsen Patt Henry, St. Francis (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star cornerback Branden Strozier, Sumner (Riverview, Fla.) four-star safety Kylen Webb, Rockwall (Texas) four-star wide receiver Noble Johnson, Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star linebacker Jamal Anderson, Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star linebacker Dee Crayton and Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.) three-star tight end Markus Dixon.

Of the 10 prospects that have publicly pledged to Clemson in June, seven of those were on campus as official visitors during the June 3-5 weekend.

Speaking with The Clemson Insider prior to his public announcement, we asked Hoffler his thoughts on how Clemson’s 2023 recruiting class has quickly and not so quietly come together since the official visit weekend.

“I can’t say anything else, but we got a lot more players coming that are really talented,” Hoffler said. “It’s been good because all of us at a certain time, we’ve all been trying to keep it as quiet as possible. It’s been kind of fun just trying to see who can be as quiet as possible with the media and try not to give anything away. ”

“Even if some who didn’t commit, we all bonded really well,” he continued. “So, that was another thing. I bonded with the recruits and the players. It’s just been really fun getting to know all of them because they’re all real good football players and even better people.”

Hoffler has become the third defensive lineman to pledge to Clemson in this cycle, joining Ojiegbe and a fellow Peach State native in Burley.

“I knew Vic and David before the OV,” Hoffler said. “I’ve been friends with Vic for a while, but I met David on my first time there and we’ve been talking ever since. And then when he committed, he’s just been talking to me about trying to get me. Me and Vic and the other guys that we might get, I’ve gotten real close with all of them.

“It’s just been real good building relationships because I think all of us can take something from each other’s games and help improve ourselves when we get to Clemson and get to play on the same team. So, I’m just real excited to get to grow with them, talk with them and play with them — once we get there — it’s been all good.”

With Tuesday’s addition of Hoffler, Clemson’s 2023 class is currently ranked No. 4 nationally in the 247Sports Composite team rankings and No. 5 nationally by Rivals.

And just so you know, they aren’t finished adding either.

Clemson lands another four-star defensive lineman

Clemson just added its second four-star defensive lineman prospect to its 2023 class.

Clemson has landed another highly-touted 2023 prospect.

Announcing his decision on Tuesday, four-star defensive lineman AJ Hoffler has committed to Clemson, choosing the Tigers over 51 other schools, including Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio State.

According to 247Sports Composite, the 6-foot-4, 240-pounder is a top-40 defensive line prospect in the nation and a top-300 overall recruit. Playing for Woodward Academy in Atlanta, Ga., Hoffler had 51 total tackles (21 for loss), 11 sacks and three forced fumbles as a junior in 2021.

With Hoffler’s decision, Clemson has added four of its 13 total 2023 commitments in the past week. One of the four is four-star defensive lineman Vic Burley, who committed on June 15 and is 247Sports’ second-highest rated recruit in Clemson’s class.

‘It’s been a long time coming’: Clemson lands another major commitment

AJ Hoffler knew he wanted to be a Clemson Tiger since last month.

The four-star defensive end out of Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) finally made that happen as he verbally pledged to Clemson on Tuesday evening over schools like Ohio State and North Carolina.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Hoffler told The Clemson Insider in an exclusive phone interview Monday night. “I kind of knew I was gonna pick Clemson for about a month or so now. I just got to the point where I didn’t need to wait any longer. I already knew where I wanted to go to college.”

“I’d say what made me choose (Clemson) is they were recruiting me the hardest for a while and they just showed my family a bunch of love as well,” he continued. “It wasn’t just me, they were checking up on my mom and my dad and my grandparents all the time, so I knew it was really a family thing and it was more than just football.”

Hoffler made another unofficial visit to Clemson in mid-May. It was an opportunity for him to do some things that he didn’t get to do when he visited with his mother, back on Monday, April 11. While the visit wasn’t a state secret, he didn’t want it to be made public. To his surprise, he had a chance to meet with Clemson’s president, Jim Clements.

“That was the first school to introduce me to the president,” Hoffler said. “The president, he was real excited to see me. He said that he watched my film. He knew all about me. He knew about my mom. I just felt at home there, so that’s why I was ready to make my decision.”

On the car ride home back to the Peach State, that’s when Hoffler knew Clemson was where he wanted to be. His official visit from June 3-5 only confirmed that.

“The day before the official visit, I told Coach (Lemanski Hall) I was gonna commit,” Hoffler said. “I knew before the official, but after the official visit, I felt 100% confident (in my decision). It just reassured (me) that I did want to be there. I already knew going into it that I was gonna commit, but after leaving, I just felt even better about it.”

According to Hoffler, Hall had been telling him prior to the weekend of the official visit that he was the No. 1 guy that Clemson’s defensive ends coach wanted right now. There was a spot for him to commit during the official visit weekend and while the spot was still going to be there afterward, Hall said he couldn’t hold it if someone else wanted to commit.

Hoffler called Hall on June 2 and told him that he was coming to Clemson.

“Him and his wife were screaming on the phone,” Hoffler said. “When I told Coach Swinney, he had the same reaction. Coach Swinney started jumping up and down. So, I felt really good about (my decision). I felt like I was wanted and they didn’t have any hesitation about taking me. They were ready to get me.”

While Hoffler has been silently committed since then, he was originally planning to commit on his birthday at the end of August. Instead, he decided to join Clemson’s 2023 recruiting class on his mom’s birthday, Tuesday.

While Hoffler has had Clemson as his top school for a considerable amount of time, it wasn’t long ago that Ohio State was considered the leader in his recruitment. Hoffler credited the job that both Hall and defensive coordinator Wesley Goodwin did in recruiting him. They made up a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

“I’d say they did a better job than I could’ve imagined,” Hoffler said. “Because even when they first started talking to me, I was like, ‘Oh man, that’s cool, but I’m still going to Ohio State.’ That’s what I was thinking at the time, but they just kept recruiting me and kept showing me love. They did a better job and they showed genuine care. I have a great relationship with both of them and I talk to both of them at least three-to-four times a week…They did a really, really good job recruiting me. I was really impressed.”

What was it about Clemson’s recruiting pitch that resonated with Hoffler the most?

“It was about developing me as a man off the field and it being more than just football,” he said. “It’s more about academics and developing you as a man than the football part. I know that they say that if you take care of everything off the field, on the field will take care of itself. That was kind of the main thing. I was like, ‘This is where I need to be,’ because it’s more than just football for them.”

Having an opportunity to play early is also something that Hoffler looked at considerably. Hoffler’s trainer brought that to his attention before Clemson did because he trains some of the guys on the Tigers’ defensive line.

“He was telling me that they were losing a bunch of guys (Xavier Thomas, K.J. Henry, Justin Mascoll and Myles Murphy) and if I went there, I had a really good chance at playing as a freshman, assuming that I develop well and learn the system,” Hoffler said. “And then, Coach Ski, Goodwin, Coach (Nick) Eason and Coach Swinney, they all told me the same thing.”

Hoffler put that into another plus category for Clemson. When it came down to it, having the ability to play early wasn’t something that was high up on his list, but he definitely did consider that as something that he was looking at in a school at the next level.”

While Hoffler would’ve liked to enroll in January 2023, he’ll have to wait until this time next year to arrive on campus.

Once Hoffler does arrive on campus, what can Clemson fans expect out of him?

“I know this is cliche, but I personally believe that I’m the hardest worker,” he said. “I’m never gonna give up, no matter how hard the challenge is. I’m self-motivated. I hate quitting. I’m never gonna give up. I think I’m a versatile pass-rusher that can do all kinds of things. I’m a versatile football player that’s hard-nosed and never gonna give up. I’m gonna give it 100% all the time.”

With Tuesday’s commitment, Hoffler joins a class that includes Briarwood Christian (Birmingham, Ala.) five-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, Warner Robins (Ga.) four-star Vic Burley, St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.) four-star defensive end David Ojiegbe, Vandegrift (Austin, Texas) four-star offensive lineman Ian Reed, Westlake (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star cornerback Avieon Terrell, First Baptist Academy (Naples, Fla.) four-star tight end Olsen Patt Henry, St. Francis (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star cornerback Branden Strozier, Sumner (Riverview, Fla.) four-star safety Kylen Webb, Rockwall (Texas) four-star wide receiver Noble Johnson, Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star linebacker Jamal Anderson, Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star linebacker Dee Crayton and Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.) three-star tight end Markus Dixon.

Hoffler (6-4, 240) ranked as high as the No. 214 overall prospect in the 2023 class by 247Sports which tabs him as the nation’s No. 34 defensive lineman in his class.

Clemson’s momentum on the recruiting trail in June isn’t expected to stop anytime soon.

In fact, The Clemson Insider has multiple sunny forecasts to project at this time.

With Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star defensive end AJ Hoffler and Rome (Ga.) four-star defensive tackle Stephiylan Green both set to make their college decisions on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, we are expecting both of those days to be sunny in Clemson.

Both Hoffler and Green officially visited Clemson from June 3-5.

Hoffler announced via social media Monday afternoon that he will announce his commitment at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“I think Clemson has done a really good job, as far as recruiting me,” Hoffler said last month. “I would say that they have closed the gap.”

Hoffler is, of course, referring to that proverbial gap between Clemson and Ohio State. At one point, the Buckeyes were the No. 1 school in Hoffler’s recruitment and the presumed favorites to land his recruitment.

While Hoffler had an official visit set to North Carolina this weekend, he has pretty much shut down his recruitment and is ready to wrap things up and announce his college destination on his Mother’s birthday Tuesday.

Those comments were made a couple of weeks prior to his official visit. After taking his Clemson official, Hoffler spoke with The Clemson Insider and revealed where the Tigers stood in his recruitment after that weekend in question’s festivities.

“I would say it’s about the same,” he said. “I think they were probably already at the top. I don’t think they could’ve gone much higher per se, but they definitely did a great job. I was really impressed with the visit.”

Hoffler (6-4, 240) ranked as high as the No. 214 overall prospect in the 2023 class by 247Sports which tabs him as the nation’s No. 34 defensive lineman in his class.

As for Green, he announced his top schools and set his commitment date this past Thursday afternoon. He named a top six featuring Clemson along with Tennessee, Ole Miss, Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State, and revealed that he will be committing on June 24.

Green has since moved up his commitment date to Wednesday, June 22.

Green (6-4, 275) is ranked as high as the No. 190 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals, which tabs him as the nation’s No. 9 defensive tackle in his class.

The additions of Hoffler and Green would be verbal commitments Nos. 13 and 14 for Clemson.

The two Peach State natives would join a class that includes Briarwood Christian (Birmingham, Ala.) five-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, Warner Robins (Ga.) four-star Vic Burley, St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.) four-star defensive end David Ojiegbe, Vandegrift (Austin, Texas) four-star offensive lineman Ian Reed, Westlake (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star cornerback Avieon Terrell, First Baptist Academy (Naples, Fla.) four-star tight end Olsen Patt Henry, St. Francis (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star cornerback Branden Strozier, Sumner (Riverview, Fla.) four-star safety Kylen Webb, Rockwall (Texas) four-star wide receiver Noble Johnson, Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star linebacker Jamal Anderson, Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star linebacker Dee Crayton and Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.) three-star tight end Markus Dixon.

With the addition of Crayton this past Saturday, Clemson’s 2023 class now ranks No. 3 nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. That could certainly change with the expected additions of Hoffler and Green.

A priority defensive end target for Clemson in the 2023 recruiting class has set his commitment date.

Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star defensive end AJ Hoffler announced via social media Monday afternoon that he will announce his commitment at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Hoffler made an official visit to Clemson from June 3-5.

He spoke with The Clemson Insider shortly afterward and established where the Tigers currently stood in his recruitment.

“I would say it’s about the same,” he said. “I think they were probably already at the top. I don’t think they could’ve gone much higher per se, but they definitely did a great job. I was really impressed with the visit.”

According to Hoffler, the message from Clemson’s coaching staff this weekend was simple. They want him to take his time and not rush a decision. All in all, he’s a top player on their board and a priority for the Tigers in the 2023 recruiting class.
