Ex-Broncos OLB Ahmad Gooden selected in USFL draft

Ex-Broncos OLB Ahmad Gooden was selected by the Houston Gamblers in the third round of the USFL draft on Tuesday.

Former Denver Broncos outside linebacker Ahmad Gooden was selected by the Houston Gamblers in the third round of the USFL draft on Tuesday evening. Gooden (26) was the 13th edge defender to go off the board.

Gooden (6-2, 245 pounds) signed with the Broncos as a college free agent out of Samford following the 2019 NFL draft. The edge defender totaled 53 tackles and four sacks in his final season with the Bulldogs.

In the NFL, Gooden made Denver’s 53-man roster as a rookie and appeared in three games that season, totaling one tackle and one quarterback hit. He was cut by the Broncos late in the 2019 season and then finished the year with the New York Jets.

After failing to make the Jets’ final roster in 2020, Gooden had a brief stint with the Buffalo Bills. Last year, Gooden played for the TSL Conquerors in The Spring League. He’s now set to play in the USFL this spring.

USFL draft pool includes at least one former Broncos player

Ahmad Gooden played in three games for the Broncos in 2019, totaling one tackle and one QB hit.

The USFL draft will be held on Tuesday evening, but the league has not revealed the pool of players eligible for selection.

Many of the players in the draft pool have been leaked, however, and at least one former Denver Broncos player is eligible for selection.

Outside linebacker Ahmad Gooden, who spent one season in Denver, is part of the USFL draft class, according to SGPN’s Michael Del Negro.

Gooden (6-2, 245 pounds) signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Samford in 2019. He appeared in three games as a rookie, totaling one tackle and one quarterback hit.

After failing to make Denver’s 53-man roster in 2020, Gooden went on to spent time with the New York Jets before a brief stint with the Buffalo Bills. He played for the TSL Conquerors in The Spring League last year.

Gooden is presumably attempting to get back into the NFL, and playing in the USFL could help him get back on the radar of teams seeking OLB depth. The edge defender will turn 27 this fall.

Bills sign Ahmad Gooden to practice squad

LB Ahmad Gooden signed to Buffalo Bills practice squad.

The Bills signed linebacker Ahmad Gooden to their practice squad. The team announced the move on Thursday.

Gooden, 24, was an undrafted rookie signee of the Denver Broncos in 2019 and made the team’s practice squad out of that year’s training camp. Gooden was called up to the Broncos’ active roster that season for three games last season, making one tackle. Of those games, his first and NFL debut came against the Bills in Orchard Park. He played 11 snaps on defense that game and another five on special teams.

This past offseason, Gooden spent time with the New York Jets, Buffalo’s upcoming opponent in Week 7. He landed on the reserve/ COVID-19 list with them and then was eventually released in August.

On Wednesday, the Bills released offensive lineman Quinton Spain and used his vacant roster spot to sign defensive lineman Justin Zimmer off their practice squad. Because of that, the Bills had an opening on their PS and did not have to release anyone to make room for Gooden.

2020 New York Jets Position Preview: Outside Linebacker

Jets Wire breaks down New York’s outside linebacker room with training camp and the 2020 season approaching.

With the NFLPA player reps officially approving the NFL’s proposal and training camp just a short ways away, it’s time to take a closer look at the makeup of the Jets’ roster entering the 2020 season.

The Jets did little to address the team’s long-standing issue at the pass-rushing position. While New York was able to bring back Jordan Jenkins on a team-friendly deal after the best season of his career and Tarell Basham has shown flashes of potential, the unit lacks depth. The Jets are going to have to get creative in terms of getting after the quarterback in 2020 considering the limitations the outside linebacker room currently has.

As training camp and the beginning of the regular season inch closer, Jets Wire will provide a look at each of New York’s position groups and what could be in store for the unit in 2020. Let’s breakdown the outside linebacker room at One Jets Drive.

The Starters

Jenkins is back in the fold to lead the group. His free agent market never really took off and while it may have been a letdown for the fifth-year pass-rusher, the Jets welcomed him back with open arms.

Jenkins has been New York’s steadiest presence on the edge. He led the team with eight sacks in 2019, adding 32 tackles, three passes defended, two forced fumbles, nine tackles for loss and 13 quarterback hits. Entering another contract year, Jenkins could play himself into a contract extension if he is able to steadily improve his sack production again.

Depth

A handful of players will compete for the starting job opposite Jenkins.

Basham is a favorite for more playing time in 2020, if not the second starting job. In his first full season in New York, he was a versatile playmaker but contributed the most at outside linebacker, where he registered 18 tackles, two sacks, six passes defended, one interception and one fumble recovery.

A pair of rookies will get a chance to take snaps away from Basham, though.

The Jets have high expectations for Jabari Zuniga, one of the team’s third-round picks in April’s draft. While the University of Florida product could play on the defensive line or at outside linebacker, there’s certainly less depth in the OLB room. Bryce Huff is the other rookie in the mix. The Jets guaranteed him the most money out of any of their undrafted free agents, a sign that he’ll get a chance to stick around. While Huff may be a bit undersized for his position, he has a nose for getting after the quarterback. Last season at Memphis, Huff ranked fourth in the nation among pass-rushers with 64 total pressures.

Among the other players competing for jobs on the outside are Harvey Langi, Frankie Luvu, Ahmad Gooden and Wyatt Ray.

Outlook

While Jenkins and Basham aren’t the most formidable tandem, they should be able to get after quarterbacks with some regularity considering how strong the Jets defensive line currently is. Another year of working under Gregg Williams and the Jets should finally see some consistency at the position.

As for the depth, the talent is there, but right now players like Langi, Luvu and Gooden are best suited as situational pass-rushers. For young edge rushers like Zuniga and Huff, there’s a real opportunity for them to push both Jenkins and Basham for playing time in 2020.

Broncos make 2 roster moves

The Broncos have promoted a linebacker to the 53-man roster and cut a tight end.

The Broncos won’t activate quarterback Drew Lock from injured reserve to the 53-man roster this week. Brandon Allen will start his third-straight game and Brett Rypien will serve as the backup once again.

Denver did make two roster moves unrelated to Lock.

The Broncos promoted undrafted rookie linebacker Ahmad Gooden from the 10-man practice squad to the active roster. To make room for Gooden, the team cut tight end/fullback Orson Charles.

Gooden (6-2, 245 pounds) signed with the team as a college free agent out of Samford University following April’s NFL draft. He totaled 273 tackles and 22 sacks during his 46 games with the Bulldogs. Gooden wears jersey No. 94.

Charles (6-3, 257 pounds) signed with Denver on Tuesday after the team placed fullback Andy Janovich on injured reserve. Andrew Beck is expected to fill in at fullback so Charles getting a cut presumably means tight end Jeff Heuerman will be healthy enough to play this week.

The Broncos’ only other tight ends are Noah Fant and Troy Fumagalli.

Denver’s front office told Charles to “stay in town,” according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. That might be a sign that Charles will be brought back.
