Denver leads the all-time series against Los Angeles 73-55-1, including seven Broncos wins in their last ten games against the Chargers.
Despite playing at home with a three-game winning streak, Denver is considered an underdog against L.A. this week.
Auburn’s Bo Nix led a game-winning drive to defeat Oregon’s Justin Herbert in 2019. Five years later, they meet again in the NFL.
Five years after they faced off at the college level, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is now set to take on the Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert in the NFL.
“My freshman year in 2019, we played him,” Nix recalled earlier this week. “It was a great head-to-head battle. They had a really good football team. I still remember them being one of the best defenses that I played. Justin had a great game himself. It came down to the wire, and it was just a really good college football game that day.”
Nix led a game-winning drive to help the Auburn Tigers defeat Herbert and the Oregon Ducks 27-21 in a game played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas to open the 2019 season.
Nix was clutch when it mattered most, but his overall numbers were underwhelming as the freshman went 13-of-31 passing for 177 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Herbert went 28-of-37 for 242 yards and one touchdown with no turnovers.
Three years after Herbert graduated, Nix transferred to Oregon and played with Herbert’s younger brother, tight end Patrick Herbert.
“He would be back every once in a while,” Nix said of Herbert returning to Oregon. “He came to a game or two, and I was just able to be around him, talk and just kind of get to know him. Obviously it’s not a super close [relationship] because we didn’t have a whole lot of time [together], but I do appreciate him coming before me.
“He played for a while at Oregon, went through some tough times, and battled through it. He won a Pac-12 Championship and a Rose Bowl. So he’s one of those guys you look up to playing at Oregon, and now he’s been in the league for several years. I’ve been watching him and he’s been doing great things. So it’ll be fun watching him live and fun seeing him again.”
Herbert was picked by the Chargers in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. He won the NFL’s Rookie of the Year award that season and made the Pro Bowl in his second season. Herbert is now in his fifth season in LA.
Nix was picked by the Broncos in the first round of this year’s draft. He’s 3-2 as a starter this fall and he’ll look to stay above .500 when Herbert and the Chargers visit Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday.

We asked Raiders Wire five questions about Las Vegas ahead of their game against the Broncos on Sunday.
The Denver Broncos (2-2) are set to host the Las Vegas Raiders (2-2) in Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season. Ahead of that AFC West showdown, we asked Levi Damien of Raiders Wire five questions about Las Vegas and Sunday’s matchup. View our questions and Levi’s answers below.
1. How has Gardner Minshew looked through four games? Do you think Aidan O’Connell might overtake him at some point this season?
He hasn’t looked great. He literally had one good quarter in the first four games. It was the fourth quarter of the Ravens game, so it was a good time for it, but you can’t tell me he’s just deciding to turn it on and off. He’s just jittery in the pocket and misses way too many open receivers.
AOC could certainly overtake him at some point, but honestly, it would just be change for the sake of change. He’s not the answer either and looked completely lost in this offense in camp and preseason.
2. Do the Raiders have any notable weaknesses that Denver might be able to exploit?
The injury report. Literally half the starters are either on the injury report or on injured reserve. But even healthy, the offense is the glaring weakness. The passing offense is clunky and the run game had been literally the worst in the NFL before they got the receivers involved last week and found some running room. And to say it’s the offensive line’s fault is to miss the bigger picture. The whole offense is just not picking up what Luke Getsy is putting down, especially the zone blocking scheme. Even usually solid left tackle Kolton Miller has looked terrible this season.
3. Tyreik McAllister spent time as an RB in Denver and he’s now listed as a WR on Las Vegas’ roster. What kind of role does he have?
First, he was inactive each week until last week. And he is primarily a special teams guy, as a gunner and return specialist. But he was also used on a couple sweeps last week as well. He’s an outstanding returner and took one to the house in preseason which is what earned him a spot on the roster.
4. Who is an under-the-raider Raiders player that Broncos fans should be aware of this week?
On offense let’s go with DJ Turner. He will burn you if you’re not careful. And, of course, if Minshew can get him the ball. With Davante Adams out, Turner is the number three receiver. He got open deep last week, but Minshew overthrew him on what would have been a house call. They will try again.
On defense, let’s go with Isaiah Pola-Mao. He’s been hanging around for a few years now, waiting his turn and with the injury to Marcus Epps, Pola-Mao got his first start last week and was as advertised. That advertisement was in camp and preseason. His uncle is Troy Polamalu and Isaiah plays like safety is in his blood.
5. What’s your prediction for Sunday — who wins and why?
If the Raiders were anything resembling healthy, these would be two very similar and evenly matched teams. But the Raiders are not healthy at all. Their star players are both injured at the moment. Maxx Crosby is Questionable with a high ankle sprain that cause him to miss last week’s game and hobbled him in the blowout loss to the Panters. And Davante Adams has a hamgstring thing (but, let’s be honest it’s the trede request that’s keeping him out of this one). And there’s a whole slew of other starters who are OUT or Questionable. They only managed to beat the Browns last week because they’re the friggin Browns and Deshaun Watson is truly terrible. And not just as a human being.
So, anyway, yeah, I think the Broncos finally end their weird long losing streak and actually beat the Las Vegas Raiders for the first time ever.
Here are five storylines we’ll be keeping an eye on when the Broncos host the Raiders this week.
The Denver Broncos are set to host the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season on Sunday afternoon. Here’s a quick list of five storylines we’ll be keeping an eye on this weekend.
1. Blake Watson’s potential NFL debut: Assuming Tyler Badie (back) won’t be cleared to play, Denver’s three other running backs available will be Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and rookie Blake Watson (Audric Estime is not eligible to return from IR until Week 6). Watson was a healthy scratch for each of the team’s first four games, but it’s hard to imagine the Broncos going into the Raiders game with just two RBs.
2. Backup linebacker rotation: After losing Alex Singleton to a season-ending knee injury, the Broncos signed veterans Zach Cunningham and Kwon Alexander to the practice squad. Denver opted to elevate rookie Levelle Bailey to the game-day roster to serve as the No. 4 inside linebacker last week. Will it be Bailey again, or will the Broncos give Cunningham or Alexander a look this week?
3. Broncos’ run game vs. Raiders defense: Williams and McLaughlin finally got back on track last week and they’ll have a good opportunity to keep the momentum going against Las Vegas. The Raiders are allowing 137.5 rushing yards per game, ninth-most in the NFL.
4. Bo Nix’s sack and turnover streak: Nix has gone two straight weeks without taking a sack or throwing an interception. This is the first time Broncos quarterbacks have avoided being sacked in consecutive weeks since 2016. Can he continue that streak against Las Vegas? It will be easier if Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby (ankle) is not able to suit up.
5. Can Denver snap losing streak? The Broncos have lost eight straight games to the Raiders, including a 0-2 mark with new coach Sean Payton. Going up against their oldest rival, they’ll aim to end that streak in Week 5.
“I know it’s important for this organization,” Bo Nix said. “I know it has been for a long time. The players, we don’t take it lightly.”
The Denver Broncos finally snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Kansas City Chiefs last season. Because that particular streak was so lengthy, it overshadowed another active losing streak in the AFC West.
The Broncos have also lost eight-straight games to the Las Vegas Raiders, including 17-16 and 27-14 losses under coach Sean Payton last season. This week, Denver will get a chance to snap the losing streak against Las Vegas.
“Look, it’s a division opponent,” Payton said Wednesday. “It’s our first chance to play a division opponent [this year]. Last year, we finished 3-3 in the division. I can’t recall a team that has accomplished anything worthwhile finishing .500 in your division.
“Then you take a team like Las Vegas. There’s a long story history and certainly I appreciate that, especially with our fans. It’s our job to play our best football this Sunday and get ready to play.”
The Broncos and Raiders have been division rivals since they were founding members of the AFL in 1960. Payton just joined the team last year, but wide receiver Courtland Sutton is in his eighth season in Denver and he’s only beaten Las Vegas two times in his career.
“It’s very important,” Sutton said of winning AFC West games. “Obviously, divisional games are important because they have a lot to say about your season moving forward. Obviously to get those divisional wins and getting that first seed in your division means a lot for the playoffs.
“This game is very important and the weeks moving forward. We really have to hone in, study on the gameplan and make sure we come out victorious.”
This rivalry has been going on for 64 years, and rookie quarterback Bo Nix is set to get his first taste of it in his fifth game in the NFL.
“I’ve been able to get a sense of it a little bit,” Nix said of what the game means to the Broncos and their fans. “I don’t think you really truly understand I think until you play in your first one. I’m excited to play Sunday.
“I know it’s important for this organization. I know it has been for a long time. The players, we don’t take it lightly. So we’re going to go out there and compete at a high level, and I know they will too. It’s going to be a fun football game.”
The Broncos are currently in fourth place in the AFC West, but that could change with home games against the Raiders and Chargers on deck.
The Denver Broncos (2-2) remain in fourth place in the AFC West following their 10-9 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday, but the team could climb at least one spot in Week 5.
After winning back-to-back road games, the Broncos are now set to return home to host the Las Vegas Raiders, marking their first division game of the season. With a win, Denver would move up at least one spot in the AFC West.
“It’s really like a deep breath,” Broncos running back Javonte Williams said after Sunday’s win in New Jersey. “Just being able to go back home .500 and, like I said, we’ve got two rivals coming up, so that will give us some momentum. And we’ve got a lot of players returning, so we’re going to see how it goes.”

Following the Raiders game, Denver will host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6. The next two weeks will be huge for the Broncos as the team looks to get back into contention in the division.
Check out what Andy Reid had to say about the #Chiefs’ Week 4 matchup against the #Chargers and his relationship with Jim Harbaugh.
The Kansas City Chiefs are on an incredible 3-0 run to start their 2024 campaign.
After a practice session this week, Andy Reid told the media about his excitement to face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4.
“I look forward to the challenge of playing the Chargers,” Reid told reporters. “[They are] a well-coached football team, and [they have] good players.”
Reid also broke down his relationship with Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, which goes back to his days at Brigham Young University.
“I actually knew [the Harbaugh brothers’] dad first,” Reid continued. “So way back when I was a graduate assistant at BYU… his dad and LaVell Edwards were friends. So that’s how I met him.”
Sunday’s contest between Kansas City and Los Angeles will mark the Chiefs’ first AFC West matchup of the 2024 regular season, and give the defending Super Bowl champions their first chance to see Harbaugh’s new-look Chargers squad in action.
The Broncos are still in last place in the AFC West, but the Chargers are dealing with some key injuries and the Raiders lost to Carolina.
Following an impressive 26-7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the Denver Broncos remain in fourth place in the AFC West, but there’s hope for brighter days ahead.
Elsewhere in the division, the Kansas City Chiefs remain undefeated. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert reaggravated a high ankle sprain on Sunday and offensive tackle Joe Alt suffered a sprained MCL.
The Las Vegas Raiders are currently one spot above the Broncos in the division standings, but they’re coming off an embarrassing 36-22 loss to the previously winless Carolina Panthers.
Denver, meanwhile, had its best game of the season in Week 3. Here’s a look at how the division stacks up going into Week 4.

After facing the New York Jets (2-1), the Broncos will return home to host the Raiders in Week 4. Denver could have a chance to continue climbing up the division standings when Las Vegas visits in two weeks.
If Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid is realistic enough to avoid obsessive usage of Mahomes, why can’t Monken relinquish and do what’s best for the Ravens by running the ball at higher volumes?
Mahomes needed just 18 completions to escape the mastermind of Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo in week 2. On the other hand, Jackson was subject to the punishment of Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby.
