AFC East said to be worst RB division in NFL

The Bills are entering the upcoming NFL season with some hope and real optimism in terms of their backfield with Devin Singletary and Zack Moss.

The Bills are entering the upcoming NFL season with some hope and real optimism in terms of their backfield with Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. But as an entire division, the AFC East was recently named the worst grouping of backfield in the entire league by CBS Sports.

In regard to the Bills’ running back duo, here’s what was said:

Singletary looked good in limited action last season and seemed like he should have become the full-time back, but it’s clear the Bills don’t want to make him a true feature guy. Moss should prove to be a nice complement, given his size and pass-catching ability.

The entire AFC East is broken down here, but in terms of the Bills’ duo, it’s truthfully not the worst assessment. As mentioned, Buffalo has hope and optimism in Western New York about their duo. But that doesn’t mean they have proven much. Combined, they have 775 rushing yards between them, all of which came from Singletary’s lone pro season. Not only does Singletary have to show he can do it again, Moss has to show he can… period.

In terms of the other teams in the AFC East, the Jets do have Le’Veon Bell, but because of offensive line play, he’s been mainly ineffective since jumped over from his Steelers holdout. CBS Sports then actually predicts Cam Newton as the Pats’ best rusher, which is not a good start for them on such a list, while the Dolphins’ pair of Jordan Howard and Matt Bredia has potential, but essentially has to prove it as well.

Overall, it’s hard to argue which division was named the best in the NFL: the NFC East. When you’ve got Ezekiel Elliot and Saquon Barkley headlining a group, it’s hard to argue.

9 AFC East stories from last week for Bills fans to know

AFC East news roundup on the Patriots, Jets and Dolphins for Buffalo Bills fans to know.

You’re probably all on top of the latest news surrounding the Buffalo Bills and we hope Bills Wire helped you get there. But let’s keep you up to date with the Bills news, just outside the Bills’ realm.

The upcoming 2020 NFL season has many thinking the Bills are the favorite in the AFC East. But Buffalo isn’t just going to stroll into that title. The Dolphins, Jets, and of course the Patriots, will all have something to say about that.

So let’s stay on top of some of the latest headlines surrounding the Bills’ divisional foes now. Here are nine news stories from the other three AFC East teams from the last week right here:

Cam’s contract

We found out just last week that the Patriots brought former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on board to help replace Tom Brady. Prior to that, it was assumed Jarrett Stidham would be the guy but… not so fast.

The news in general turned some heads in the NFL world. What did so further was the details of his contract. Newton signed a deal worth $1.05 million in salary in 2020, the veteran minimum for a player with the quarterback’s NFL experience. Newton is guaranteed just $550,000, but with incentives in his deal, he could earn up to $7.5 million, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That’s pretty underpaid. But Newton has since responded to that criticism.

On Thursday, Newton took to his social media account on Instagram and wrote this message:

“THÏŠ ÏŠ ÑØT ÄßØŪT MØÑĒ¥ FØR MĒ; ïtš âbøût RĒŠ₽ĒČT.”

Newton’s looking to change the narrative about him, but of course, the Bills will have something to say about that.

Patriots have best odds to win AFC East after signing Cam Newton

After signing Cam Netwon to a one-year deal, the Patriots now have the best odds to win the AFC East in 2020.

The Buffalo Bills were betting odds favorites to win the AFC East entering this summer, especially after Tom Brady bolted for Tampa Bay.

That changed on Sunday when the Patriots added Cam Netwon to their quarterback room. New England is now favored at +105 to win the division, according to SportsBettingDime. The Bills were previously favored at +126 as far back as late May. Now the odds are not in Buffalo’s favor, as it is now +160 to win a division that was once thought to be up for grabs.

With Newton signing a one-year deal, the Patriots could once again have a former MVP under center. Newton missed 14 games last season due to a Lisfranc injury. He’s also dealt with an ailing shoulder for the past couple of seasons. Newton’s injuries are a product of his playstyle, but if anybody will be able to resurge his career, it’s certainly Bill Belichick.

Unsurprisingly, the AFC East is looked at as a two-team race between Buffalo and New England. The Jets are at +700 odds to win the division, while the Dolphins are at +750. While New York made several adjustments to its offensive line and added reinforcements in the draft and free agency, the oddsmakers don’t believe the Jets are ready to be in the same conversation with the Bills and Patriots.

Heading into the season, it looked as if the AFC East would be a wide-open race, with the Bills having just a slight edge. Newton’s arrival in the division won’t be filled with pleasantries from Miami or NewYork, especially because he holds a 7-1 record against the AFC East and is one of the best players at his position when healthy.

The addition of Newton to a quarterback room that includes an unknown in Jarrett Stidham and a well-traveled veteran in Brian Hoyer gives the Patriots a leg up as they attempt to win their 12th straight division title.

Report: AFC East coach doesn’t think Cam Newton starts for Patriots

An unnamed AFC East coach on New England Patriots, Cam Newton starting.

An un-cited report dropped on Wednesday and it’s quite an intriguing one, potentially, but most likely not, involving the Bills.

ESPN’s Dianna Russini took to Twitter and said an “AFC East head coach” had an interesting take on the Patriots and their current quarterback situation which now includes former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

Many NFL analysts predict that Newton, an oft-injured player but former No.1 overall pick and MVP winner, is going to win the starting job for the Pats over fourth-round, essential rookie, Jarrett Stidham, who took only a handful of snaps in his rookie season in 2019. That could be the case, but that’s not what this unnamed coach had to say.

Per Russini a head coach in the division, who was not referenced by name, said this:

“I think (the Patriots) are going to keep 3 QBs. Use Cam Newton perhaps as the wild card. I actually don’t see him starting Week 1 in the offense…I know one thing for a fact: the #Patriots love Jarrett Stidham”

While unnamed, we know one thing for sure: There’s a 33 percent chance that this head coach was Buffalo bench boss Sean McDermott, although, that seems unlikely.

Formerly a long-time teammate of Newton when the QB and former Panthers defensive coordinator were together in Carolina for several seasons, McDermott would logically think Newton has some starting abilities. He’s outright been an advocate for Newton finding a job this offsesaon, although, the Bills were never seen was a suitor.

More likely this quote could be Jets coach Adam Gase or Dolphins coach Brian Flores. A quick assessment of these two points to Flores as the most-likely candidate.

Flores was not a member of the Patriots coaching staff in 2019 when the team drafted Stidham. However, he has a deep-rooted history there from 2008 until 2018. Could Flores have a fly or two on the wall in New England? It’s possible.

But of course, only speculation at this point.

Cam Newton’s arrival in AFC East tilts 2020 division title odds

Cam Newton’s arrival in AFC East tilts 2020 division title odds

The Miami Dolphins, while on the upswing, are not a team that the betting community has viewed favorably for the 2020 season. The expectation for the AFC East was that the Patriots and Bills were best positioned to lockdown the division title in 2020 — and while that is still the case, there’s been a big shift atop the leaderboard courtesy of the Patriots landing quarterback Cam Newton earlier this week in free agency.

The most recent NFL Divisional odds now have the Patriots as comfortable favorites to repeat the division once again — as they’re transitioning from one former NFL Most Valuable Player to another at the quarterback position. The team most hurt by the news of Newton’s signing in the eyes of oddsmakers is Buffalo, who was previously the betting favorite.

New England Patriots: +105
Buffalo Bills: +160
New York Jets: +700
Miami Dolphins: +750

There is no love lost for the Miami Dolphins, however. Miami having the worst odds in the division is a bit surprising, especially considering the coaching advantage the team has over the New York Jets.

But regardless of who holds the third best odds in the AFC East, it is clear the bettors think this division is a two-horse race between the Bills and Patriots — and Newton was enough for many to swing the Patriots back atop the odds.

Provided the 2020 NFL season starts on schedule, the Dolphins will get a good gauge of how they measure up to the cream of the AFC East, as their first two contests are scheduled to play against the Patriots in New England and the Bills in Miami. If the Dolphins have success there, perhaps then the betting odds will be a little more friendly to the Dolphins?

Oddsmakers: Cam Newton helps Patriots replace Bills as AFC East favorite

The Patriots are now the favorites to win the AFC East after signing Cam Newton.

[jwplayer D0T4aGUM-ThvAeFxT]

The New England Patriots sent shockwaves across the division on Sunday, and because of it, they’re now favorites to win the AFC East.

The Patriots have a new potential replacement for quarterback Tom Brady. Former Panthers QB Cam Newton signed a one-year deal with New England. He’ll compete with Jarrett Stidham to become the Pats’ starting quarterback next season.

Newton, a former MVP winner and No. 1 overall pick, will immediately become the front-runner for that job over Stidham, a 2019 fourth-round pick who has barely taken a NFL snap.

With Newton, the Patriots are now another front-runner as well, the one in the division. According to William Hill Sportsbooks, the Patriots’ odds to win the AFC moved to +115. That surpasses the Bills at +140. Previously, it was the Bills who were as high as +100 favorites to win the division.

The Bills haven’t won the AFC East since 1995, the same year the club last won a playoff game. Meanwhile the Patriots have won it the last 11-straight seasons. Per The Action Network, the Patriots’ odds at winning the Super Bowl have also jumped above Buffalo’s. Before Cam, the two sides were tied at 25-1, but New England has since moved to 20-1.

For those wondering, the Jets and Dolphins are currently tied at +750 odds to win the division.

Who are the AFC East’s ten best players entering 2020?

Who are the AFC East’s ten best players entering 2020?

The AFC East is going to look drastically different this season. There will be no Tom Brady, no guarantees that the Patriots’ reign of terror over the AFC East will continue for another season. The Dolphins are a drastically improved roster and the Buffalo Bills have brought in one of the most electric wide receivers in the game of football — Stefon Diggs.

But as we survey the AFC East landscape for 2020, which players are the cream of the crop? Who stands head and shoulders above the rest as the best talent the division has to offer this year?

We break down the 10 best talents in the AFC East here, team by team.

Buffalo Bills

WR Stefon Diggs

Diggs’ addition is a huge win for Buffalo as the team looks to unlock the potential of QB Josh Allen’s deep ball. Chemistry will be a big question — if things go awry, how long will Diggs keep his composure after effectively strong-arming his way off the Vikings this offseason. One thing not up for debate? Diggs’ talent.

CB TreDavious White

The AFC East has suddenly become a mecca for top-flight cornerbacks. White has budded in Buffalo into one of the best cover options in all of football — although apparently DeVante Parker never got that memo.

LB Tremaine Edmunds

Long, freakishly fast and just 22-years old with two years of league experience — the sky is the limit for Edmunds. He’ll continue to play a starring role in the Bills defense and will definitely be a focal point of Miami’s game planning.

Miami Dolphins

WR Devante Parker

Parker enjoyed a breakout season this year, getting his fair share of production against top flight corners like White and New England’s Stephon Gilmore. With 1,200 receiving yards to his name in 2019, Parker finally lived up to the expectations that come with being a first-round pick.

Now…it’s time for an encore.

CB Byron Jones

Jones joins the Dolphins from Dallas this season and don’t let the lack of interceptions fool you — Jones is capable of blanketing the top receivers in football when he’s on. And, now playing across from Xavien Howard, he’s likely to get more targets this season and more opportunities for turnovers.

New England Patriots

OG Joe Thuney

Thuney will play this season on the franchise tag. Whether or not he’s retained long-term in New England is yet to be determined, but the franchise tag was well warranted — both the Dolphins and the rival Jets were reported to be hot on Thuney’s tail before the Patriots slapped him with the franchise tag at the last moment.

CB Stephon Gilmore

Gilmore, the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, has a strong case to be the best cornerback in football. Although, once again, DeVante Parker didn’t seem to get the memo.

SAF Devin McCourty

McCourty logged 5 interceptions this past defense as a prowler on the back end for the Patriots — he’s been a long-time staple in New England and despite being a little slower with his age, he’s still a top free safety option. A silver lining for Miami, McCourty was rumored to have the Dolphins as a preferred destination had the Patriots not brought back his brother Jason to play in 2020.

New York Jets

LB CJ Mosley

Mosley was injured last season, but don’t let that recency bias creep in and deter you from appreciating how good Mosley is as a three-down linebacker. He’s a stud and will be the fixture of the Jets’ defense for a long time to come.

SAF Jamal Adams

Adams might be the the best overall player in the division. He’s certainly the most versatile. But he’s also requested a trade — and none of the AFC East teams made the cut onto his preferred shortlist.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

If Adams were dealt, who would be the next player in line to get a call up? Serious consideration would have to go to Dolphins CB Xavien Howard — if he’s healthy, he’s as good of a ball hawk as any corner in the division. You’re more than willing to live with the ups and downs when you produce as many turnovers as Howard does when he’s on the field.

AFC East ranked second-worst QB division

Which division is the best in football for quarterbacks?

Bills quarterback Josh Allen is might be the best quarterback in the AFC East, but overall in NFL.com‘s divisional rankings, the grouping doesn’t hold very much weight.

In the rankings, the AFC East only edges on one other in their rankings, surprisingly the NFC East.

Here’s the breakdown via Adam Schien:

Ahead of the NFC East? Yep. Actually, I considered pushing this group even higher up the board. And I would’ve, if I knew Tua would start Week 1. If he’s healthy, he should play right away: He has the skills to be an instant star. Regular readers know how high I am on Allen, who significantly improved in Year 2. I already listed the Bills QB as my leading dark-horse MVP candidate in 2020. I still think Darnold has star potential, too. After the first half of his 2019 campaign was upended by mono, the Jets’ field general started to flourish down the stretch, with a 13:4 TD-to-INT ratio over his final eight games. While nobody really knows what to think about Stidham, I think an expecation of sound-and-solid play is fair.

In the NFC East, by comparison, you have Dak Prescott, Daniel Jones, Carson Wentz and Dwayne Haskins. Both sets of QBs have a lot of uncertainties attached to them, aside from Prescott.

The rankings also hold the easy favorite as the best QB division in football, the NFC South. It’s hard to argue Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, even with the unproven Teddy Bridgewater in there.

Where is each AFC East team’s biggest weakness in 2020?

Where is each AFC East team’s biggest weakness in 2020?

The AFC East landscape looks drastically different than it did 18 months ago when the Dolphins embraced the idea of a rebuild. And this looming shift appears to be a part of Miami’s plans, too — because when all the young talent comes of age for the Miami Dolphins, the continued evolution of the East will have Miami square in the thick of things.

That’s the plan, anyway. As we brace for the 2020 season, where is each AFC East team weakest? Can the Dolphins capitalize?

Buffalo Bills

Biggest weakness: Consistent QB play

If Josh Allen could play the Dolphins every week, he’d be an All-Pro. But alas, he does not. Instead, Allen struggles greatly against opponents elsewhere in the league, which prevents Buffalo from having needed clarity on just how good he actually is — and what the team’s ceiling is with him behind center.

Miami Dolphins

Biggest weakness: Experience

Miami is talented — which is something that couldn’t have been said 12 months ago. But Miami is also young. And that youth will inevitably need some time to incubate and come around. Miami may overcome their general inexperience to be a competitor in 2020; but a lack of chemistry and a lack of experience seems to be the biggest barrier for now. As the team develops, more defined areas of needed improvement will declare themselves.

New England Patriots

Biggest weakness: Long-term quarterback outlook

Tom Brady isn’t a member of the New England Patriots anymore. Has that really sunk in yet? It feels surreal to think about — even though we’ve known it to be true for three months now. The Patriots’ quarterback room is comprised of Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. And the team isn’t supposed to be brutally bad in 2020, meaning they aren’t likely to sniff a top QB prospect in next year’s draft, either.

New York Jets

Biggest weakness: Coaching

The Jets continue to remain committed to head coach Adam Gase. The team plucked hollow wins in the second half of the year, which has apparently instilled some confidence that Gase is the right man for the job. But Dolphins fans have seen this song and dance up close and personal before — and Gase hasn’t changed his stripes. His team still struggles offensively, he still struggles with player relations and his team is undisciplined on the field.

Where did each AFC East team improve the most in 2020?

Where did each AFC East team improve the most in 2020?

The AFC East landscape looks drastically different than it did 18 months ago when the Dolphins embraced the idea of a rebuild. And this looming shift appears to be a part of Miami’s plans, too — because when all the young talent comes of age for the Miami Dolphins, the continued evolution of the East will have Miami square in the thick of things.

That’s the plan, anyway. As we brace for the 2020 season, where has each team most improved?

Buffalo Bills

Most Improved: Big play potential

Adding WR Stefon Diggs to an already promising supporting cast is going to leave QB Josh Allen with very few excuses this season. Allen has surprised with his team success — and although he’s still a very high variance quarterback, he’s found more success than his doubters seemed to embrace back in 2018. Diggs was an expensive purchase for the Bills — but the team thinks they are “close” to a big breakthrough. If they are, and if Diggs brings the explosive plays needed to push them over the edge, he’ll be worth it.

Miami Dolphins

Most Improved: Secondary

Miami was playing good football at the end of the year while effectively playing street free agents in the secondary. Getting Xavien Howard and Bobby McCain healthy will help the cause. So, too, will the additions of Byron Jones and Noah Igbinoghene this offseason as prized add-ons. The Dolphins’ blueprint for coverage is clear — they’re going to press you and bring the heat.

New England Patriots

Most Improved: Offensive scheme diversity

The Patriots were one of the first teams to make multiple tight ends a staple of their personnel groupings. It’s a strategy that, when featuring competent players, will stress opposing defenses to match the run/pass versatility a team can bring to the field. The Patriots’ tight end group was in sorry shape last season — so the Patriots went out and added two 3rd-round pass catching targets to the mix to help bolster the diversity of the offense; which was key in life after Tom Brady.

New York Jets

Most Improved: Offensive line

The Jets’ offensive line still shouldn’t be considered “good”, but adding a promising mauler in Mekhi Becton to the mix while also tacking on center Connor McGovern in free agency should help. The Jets’ offense was in sorry shape last season under the direction of Adam Gase — although if Miami’s experiences are any indication, we’re not sure the help up front is going to bring different results.
