Adam Schefter: Multi-game suspension likely for Chiefs WR Rashee Rice

According to Adam Schefter, #Chiefs WR Rashee Rice may face a multi-game suspension for his involvement in a car accident in Dallas, Texas.

Kansas City Chiefs wideout Rashee Rice is facing eight felony charges after his involvement in a high-speed, multi-car accident in Dallas.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the league is likely to make a decision on punishment for the 23-year-old receiver at some point before the 2024 season. Schefter revealed how the league may choose to handle Rice’s situation in an article that was recently posted by ESPN.

“He is facing one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injury,” Schefter wrote. “He turned himself in to police last week at the regional jail in DeSoto, Texas, before being released on bond. On top of the legal issues and lawsuits he is facing, Rice is expected to be disciplined by the NFL, resulting in at least a multi-game suspension.”

Rice, who established himself as the top wideout in Kansas City’s offense last season, would be sorely missed if the league decides that he must serve a suspension before seeing action for the Chiefs in the 2024 regular season.

Adam Schefter: ‘Resolution coming soon’ in Kirk Cousins tampering case

According to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter, the NFL could come down with punishment for the Atlanta Falcons this week in their tampering case.

The NFL draft starts on Thursday, and the event could be in for a big shakeup. And no, we’re not talking about the Minnesota Vikings trading up for a quarterback — for once. Instead, we’re talking about a former Vikings quarterback, Kirk Cousins, and the league’s tampering investigation centered on his signing with the Atlanta Falcons.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the league could conclude its investigation and hand down the punishment as early as this week, which could have an effect on the first round of the draft. There is precedent for the league to take away a team’s draft picks for tampering.

The Miami Dolphins forfeited their first-round pick in last year’s draft, along with a third-round pick in this year’s draft, in two separate tampering cases involving former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and former Saints head coach Sean Payton. That punishment was handed down in August 2022.

Before that, the league stripped the Kansas City Chiefs of a third-round pick in 2016 and a sixth-round selection in 2017 for their tampering with former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin in 2015.

In both cases, members of the coaching staffs and/or front office personnel received fines in addition to the draft pick forfeitures. Schefter reports that there are some sources who believe that the punishment for the Falcons is “likely to involve draft picks” and “is expected to be more severe.”

However severe the punishment winds up being, it’s probably unlikely the league would grant the Minnesota Vikings any compensation despite rumors that Minnesota could be granted the Falcons’ selection, which is currently No. 8 in Thursday’s first round.

Adam Schefter continues to predict LSU QB Jayden Daniels to Commanders

Adam Schefter is convinced Jayden Daniels is coming to Washington.

For several weeks now, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter has remained confident that LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels will go No. 2 overall in Thursday’s 2024 NFL draft to the Washington Commanders.

To be fair to Schefter, he hasn’t reported Daniels is going to the Commanders. However, from gathering intel from his sources around the NFL, his best guess is Daniels to the Commanders.

On Monday, Schefter doubled down on Daniels to Washington in an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show.”

“The Commanders have not finalized that decision, could they change their mind, sure,” Schefter. “The most likely scenario is that the Commanders stay at two and take Jayden Daniels in my mind.”

Earlier on Monday, Schefter also wrote a column at ESPN in which he discussed what he was hearing ahead of the draft, including some tidbits on the Commanders.

The Commanders have been highly impressed with Daniels’ abilities, and they are not alone. One NFL head coach whose team is not in the quarterback market said he would take Daniels over Caleb Williams (USC), who is expected to be drafted No. 1 by the Bears. “It’s a no-brainer to me,” the coach said. “Jayden looks like the best guy in this draft.”

Another head coach compared Daniels to Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson: “If you pick Daniels, you’re getting Lamar 2.0, but he’s further along as a passer than Lamar was when he came out,” the coach said.

Washington still is going through its process, but Daniels is the favorite to be its pick.

Schefter is the top newsbreaker in sports, and he’s rarely ever wrong. Again, he’s guessing on this pick, but it is an educated guess. It’s also important to note he has been wrong before. In 2021, Schefter said the 49ers would select Alabama quarterback Mac Jones at No. 3 overall — they chose Trey Lance.

Current Washington general manager Adam Peters was San Francisco’s assistant GM in 2021.

Does Jayden Daniels not want to play for the Commanders?

It’s been a rollercoaster week regarding Jayden Daniels and the Commanders.

At the beginning of this week, it looked like a mere formality that LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels would be the next quarterback for the Washington Commanders.

However, a visit to Top Golf changed everything. We are kidding — sort of.

On the final day that NFL teams could host the top 30 visits at their team facilities, Washington did things a bit differently. It hosted a large group, including four of the top quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL draft: Daniels, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy, and Michael Penix Jr.

On Wednesday, some questioned why the Commanders would host four quarterback prospects on one visit, although it’s been done multiple times over the years. Daniels’ agent saw the tweets and hit the “like” button on X—formerly Twitter—on two of those tweets.

Some thought it was much ado about nothing, while others thought it was extremely unprofessional.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who has long predicted Daniels to Washington, has seemingly backed off that “guess” in recent days. In an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Friday, Schefter mentioned the possibility that perhaps Daniels would like to play elsewhere.

“The signs point to Jayden Daniels, which they do, and the Commanders are going through it after this week, when again, I think it’s a situation where from the outset, Jayden Daniels has had an interest in being other places,” Schefter said.

“Now the interest is, “What do the Commanders do about that?” Schefter asked.

Schefter then mentioned the Raiders as a possible option for Daniels, who played at Arizona State when head coach Antonio Pierce was an assistant there, and the two have remained close.

What do we make of this? Whether Daniels wants to play elsewhere or not, he has no choice if Washington selects him. And if Washington takes a player who supposedly wants to be elsewhere, who cares? Every year and in every sport, a player may have a preference, and that doesn’t stop teams from drafting them.

If Daniels is the guy for the Commanders, he’ll be the pick next week — and he’ll be fine. For his part, Schefter said signs still point to Washington selecting Daniels second overall.

Is Adam Schefter backing off his ‘guess’ about Jayden Daniels to Commanders?

Is Schefter less confident about his hunch of Jayden Daniels going to the Commanders?

When ESPN’s Adam Schefter says something regarding the NFL, you can usually take it to the bank. Schefter breaks more news than any sports reporter, and he is often never wrong.

Recently, Schefter said on his podcast that he believed the Washington Commanders, with their No. 2 overall selection, were leaning toward LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels. In an appearance on the “Trap or Dive” podcast, Schefter said Washington fans could go ahead and order their Daniels jerseys.

“I think you can go ahead and get those Jayden Daniels jerseys,” Schefter said.

Remember, it was Schefter who warned everyone in January that Ben Johnson wasn’t the top choice to be Washington’s head coach. He was alone in that — and he was correct.

On Thursday, Schefter was a guest on the “Money Down” podcast, where he was again asked about Daniels to Washington. He chose his words a bit more carefully.

“I think it’s tracking for Jayden Daniels to be 2, but Washington’s got all the quarterbacks in this week; let’s see what they decide,” Schefter said. “There’s still 10 days, people change their minds, there’s a lot that happens. Again, I’m guessing, I want to be clear. I’m guessing that Jayden would be the 2nd pick today. I don’t know that. That’s my guess.”

Let’s be clear that in his previous mentions of Daniels to Washington, he never reported that was the move. It was always his hunch from talking to people around the NFL. He admitted he hadn’t talked to the Commanders.

While Schefter still stuck by his “guess,” it seemed a lot less confident than it did a week ago.

What does this tell us? Neither he nor anyone else really knows what Washington general manager Adam Peters is going to do next Thursday.

Daniel Jeremiah takes strong stand on Commanders No. 2 pick

Jeremiah makes it clear that nobody knows what the Commanders are going to do.

Daniel Jeremiah has been around the block a few times.

Jeremiah is not new to the NFL draft or to the NFL draft buildup.

So, watching and listening to the media circus it becomes annually, Jeremiah did not hold back when he was asked about the Commanders’ No. 2 overall selection.

Jeremiah went as far as expressing to Scott Abraham (WJLA TV 7), “I’ve been connecting them (Commanders) with Drake Maye (North Carolina) for a long time…I think anybody that says they know exactly what Washington is doing is lying.”

Just last week Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd boldly stated that he had been told that Washington is going to select Jayden Daniels at the overall No. 2 position in the draft. Seeing Peters has yet to tell anyone, who told Cowherd?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter last week also expressed that all signs were pointing to the Commanders drafting Daniels with the second overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

We responded here on Commanders Wire asking if Commanders insiders John Keim, Ben Standig, Nicki Jhabvala, J.P Finlay and Sam Fortier all agree that Adam Peters is providing absolutely no signs right now, then how is it that Cowherd and Schefter know?

We also advised that some in the media were making too much of Daniels being invited for a visit. We explained that we were confident that Maye and McCarthy would also be invited for visits, and sure enough, they were.

Jeremiah is correct, and he is also brave enough to double down that others in his business don’t know what the Commanders are doing either.

Perhaps some in the business feel they need to present an image of having the inside scoop when they actually don’t.

As Adam Peters continues to hold his cards close to his chest, making any “signs” invisible to all concerned, might Jeremiah simply be more willing to be honest that he doesn’t know what Peters is going to do?

As expected Commanders hosting Maye and Daniels next week

The Commanders get some face time with Maye and Daniels next week — one week before the NFL draft.

Well, that didn’t take long.

Just 24 hours ago, Commanders Wire encouraged Commanders fans not to make too much of Tuesday’s announcement that Jayden Daniels would visit the Commanders next week.

Though Adam Schefter, Brian Kelly and Colin Cowherd had all said in the past week that the Commanders were going to draft Daniels, we said, yes, the Commanders may draft Daniels, but those guys don’t actually know whom the Commanders are going to select.

We also declared that Adam Peters would certainly have Drake Maye visit the facility and perhaps J.J. McCarthy as well.

So, Wednesday brought the announcement that North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye will also visit Ashburn next week.

Indeed, Adam Peters, Dan Quinn, and owner Josh Harris have wisely not given any indication to anyone in the media who the Commanders will select with that No. 2 overall selection.

The possibility exists that the three may not only be acting wisely to not publicly declare their intentions. Seeing these three quarterbacks are also receiving such varied evaluations from the draft analysts, could it be that the Commanders trio of Peters, Quinn and Harris honestly, have not yet been able to be in unison regarding the selection?

Perhaps, being undecided, the Commanders are still continuing to do their necessary homework. If that is the case, could it be that this final visit/interview for each next week may be the determining factor in the end?

It’s a huge decision for Quinn and Peters. Just last year, the Panthers took Bryce Young, yet the guy selected next was C.J. Stroud, who had a much better rookie season.

With that in mind, the Commanders may want to conduct one more face-to-face interaction to observe how the young men refer to surprising questions or statements.

Ron Rivera chose Chase Young at No. 2 when quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert were not chosen until the fifth and sixth selections. Rivera never recovered and never obtained the quarterback he needed, either.

Adam Schefter says signs still point to Jayden Daniels going to the Commanders

Schefter is not always right. Remember 2021?

Last week, Adam Schefter of ESPN said he believed LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels would be the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft to the Washington Commanders. The preeminent NFL insider didn’t report Daniels was going to Washington, but his wording was interesting.

Schefter said he and others were discouraged from spoiling the picks ahead of time, but signs pointed to Daniels heading to Washington. Again, it was not a report, just a hunch.

Schefter doesn’t often put his name on something that doesn’t end up being true. Remember in January when everyone else assumed Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson would be Washington’s next head coach? But it was Schefter who threw cold water on that notion.

Sure enough, Schefter was right.

On the latest episode of “The Adam Schefter Podcast,” Schefter doubled down on Daniels and the Commanders.

“I will stand behind that,” Schefter said. “The signs continue to point to Jayden Daniels going number 2 to Washington.”

Schefter said nothing had changed his mind regarding Daniels to the Commanders.

While we should often take what Schefter says to the bank, he’s not always right. Remember in 2021 when the San Francisco 49ers moved up to No. 3 in the draft to select a quarterback? Everyone thought it would be Mac Jones —including Schefter.

It ended up being Trey Lance.

What do these two situations have in common? Current Washington GM Adam Peters was San Francisco’s assistant GM in 2021.

Are all signs pointing Jayden Daniels to the Commanders?

Some perspective on all of the Jayden Daniels’ rumors.

Jayden Daniels is comin’ to town.

Tuesday evening, Ben Standig of the Athletic reported that the Commanders are having Daniels come in for a visit on Monday, April 15.

Three big-name personalities have linked Daniels to the Commanders in the last seven days. Colin Cowherd said Monday he had been told the Commanders were going to draft Daniels.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly, when asked about Daniels last week, commented that Daniels will take good care of himself and that, “He’s going to get the ball out to playmakers and make plays for Washington.”

There was also ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter: “I know we are not supposed to spoil picks. We’ll see how the Commanders decide to move forward with the No. 2 overall selection. But a little over a few weeks out, I think the signs continue to point to Jayden Daniels being the second overall pick at number two.”

In addition, is now the report from Standig that Daniels is coming to Ashburn, so Daniels must be the pick, correct?

Not necessarily.

First, Daniels quarterbacked the last two seasons at LSU. Kelly is simply pumping up his guy to be selected high because, in doing so, Kelly is lauding his football program. What is Kelly supposed to say, “Personally, I think Daniels could be the fourth quarterback drafted?”

Schefter told his listeners he was not supposed to spoil the picks, and then what did he do? He told his audience all signs point to Daniels being the pick.

Further, what did Schefter mean, “The signs continue to point to Daniels …?” What signs? What Adam Peters has been saying? No.

What Dan Quinn has expressed? Not at all.

What owner Josh Harris has publicly said about how they feel about Daniels? Certainly not.

Commanders fans need to remember that John Keim, Ben Standig, JP Finlay, Nicki Jhabvala, and Sam Fortier claim the Commanders have provided no evidence toward any particular quarterback.

But Adam Schefter knows?

Schefter wants his audience to “think” he knows, but what did Schefter actually say?

What about Daniels visiting next week?

Well, don’t you think Adam Peters is also going to bring in Drake Maye for a visit? Might he also bring in J.J. McCarthy?

Commanders fans, it’s true; no one in the media “knows” whom the Commanders are going to draft at No. 2 overall.

Adam Schefter says free agency has helped take pressure off Jets in draft

“They’ve taken the pressure off them with what they’ve done during free agency.” – Adam Schefter

The Jets, unsurprisingly, have been aggressive in free agency and have tried to patch as many holes as possible for this win-now mode in 2024. The Jets filled all three open spots on the offensive line by signing former Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith and former Ravens guard John Simpson as well as trading for Ravens right tackle Morgan Moses.

The Jets also essentially swapped Bryce Huff for Haason Reddick after losing the former to the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency before trading for the latter just last week. Not to mention, the Jets found a new No. 2 wide receiver in former Charger Mike Williams. The Jets are once again all in for this season, knowing major changes are coming if things don’t work out.

Because of all these moves, ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes the pressure is off the Jets and general manager Joe Douglas when it comes to the draft. Schefter spoke with Jets team reporter Ethan Greenberg about his thoughts on the Jets’ free agency and why the Jets now have options when the first round of the draft rolls around on April 25.

“That’s the great part about it,” ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter said at the NFL League Meetings last week in Orlando, via the Jets’ official website. “They addressed so many needs that they don’t have to come away with anything. I don’t mind the idea if there’s a guy like [Michigan QB] J.J. McCarthy still sitting there, if Minnesota or Denver or Las Vegas wants to come up to the Jets spot and the Jets get extra picks, there’s nothing wrong with that. They have options. … They’ve taken the pressure off them with what they’ve done during free agency.”

Before free agency, almost every mock draft had the Jets taking an offensive tackle because it felt like it was a lock the Jets had to address the position in the draft. Then they landed Smith and Moses, so now a tackle doesn’t have to be forced. The Jets absolutely could still take a tackle with the 10th pick, but now the door is open for a wide receiver such as Washington’s Rome Odunze or a tight end like Georgia’s Brock Bowers.

Even a trade, one way or the other, is now not out of the realm of possibility. The Jets do have some flexibility now following their free agency spree and rebuilding the offensive line. Remember, the Jets currently do not have a pick in the second round thanks to the Aaron Rodgers trade. Perhaps they look to trade down to get a pick back in that spot. On the other hand, if the board falls a certain way, an aggressive trade up (Marvin Harrison Jr?) also has to be considered. All options are on the table.

There’s always pressure on a team, especially one in the position the Jets are in. But they’ve made themselves an interesting team to watch later this month in Detroit.
