Reported GM candidate for Panthers decides to remain with Cowboys

The Panthers reportedly had some interest in Dallas’ Will McClay, but never requested an interview with him. Now we know why.

Despite numerous reports of their interest in Will McClay, the Carolina Panthers never officially extended an interview request to the Dallas Cowboys big-wig. Well, now we know why.

As reported by ESPN’s Todd Archer on Friday afternoon, the Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel will remain the Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel. McClay, who is “very happy” in Dallas, will not interview with other organizations for their respective general manager jobs this offseason.

The 57-year-old has been with the Cowboys since 2003. In addition to his current role, he’s also served as a scout, the pro scouting coordinator, the director of football research, the assistant director of player personnel and the senior director of scouting.

This past Monday, the Panthers announced that they requested interviews with eight individuals for their general manager position. McClay, who had been linked to the franchise by a handful of reporters, was not included on their list.

McClay did receive requests from the Los Angeles Chargers and the Washington Commanders, who are now set to hire San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters for their opening.

Report: Lions OC Ben Johnson ‘firmly in play’ for Commanders head coaching job

Is Ben Johnson Washington’s top target as head coach?

The Washington Commanders hired San Francisco 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters as their new general manager on Friday. Peters was Washington’s top target throughout its search for a new GM.

Next up for the Commanders is hiring a new head coach.

Washington requested permission to speak with seven candidates earlier this week. However, the Commanders couldn’t talk with any of these coaches who had teams in this weekend’s wild-card round. Washington did request permission to interview two coaches on the Baltimore Ravens’ staff (defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald and associate head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver) and have already interviewed Weaver virtually. It isn’t confirmed if the Commanders have spoken with MacDonald yet.

Washington could speak with those coaches because the Ravens are on a bye this week as the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

With Peters in place, does Washington already have a favorite to be its next head coach?

According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is “firmly in play.”

Like Peters in the GM search, Johnson is considered by many to be the top head coaching candidate available on this carousel.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN offered the following on Johnson and the Commanders:

Johnson and the Lions host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday in the NFC wild-card round, and he can officially interview virtually with teams next week.

Several teams have requested permission to interview Johnson for their vacant head coaching positions.

This search still has a long way to go, with the Commanders needing to interview several other candidates, but there certainly appears to be smoke around Johnson.

Twitter reacts to Commanders hiring Adam Peters as GM

It’s overwhelmingly positive for the Commanders.

The Washington Commanders began their search for a new head of football operations on Monday. On Friday, Washington hired its top target, San Francisco 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters.

Peters was widely considered the most coveted GM candidate on the market, with many finding it difficult to believe he’d leave San Francisco. Over the past two years, Peters has turned down multiple opportunities to interview.

Why Washington?

It’s a new day. Does anyone believe Peters even picks up the phone if Daniel Snyder called for an interview? New owner Josh Harris and his ownership group quickly identified Peters as their top target and closed on him within the week. With Peters in place, Washington will now turn its attention to finding a head coach.

How is social media reacting to the hiring of Peters? Unsurprisingly, it’s mostly all positive. We say mostly because, well, some people are never happy.

Here are the latest Twitter/X reactions.

Commanders hiring 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters as general manager

The Commanders land their top target.

Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris got his man. The Commanders quickly began their search for a new head of football operations on Monday after firing head coach Ron Rivera. On Friday, Washington hired San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager as the team’s new GM.

Peters was one of five known candidates to interview with Harris and his advisory committee, which consisted of minority owners David Blitzer, Magic Johnson, Mitchell Rales, former NBA executive Bob Myers, and former NFL executive Rick Speilman.

Most considered Peters to be the top GM candidate on the market, with many believing the California native would be difficult to pry away from the 49ers. In San Francisco, Peters was vital in building what is arguably the NFL’s best roster.

Peters joined San Francisco in 2017, spending four seasons as the vice president of player personnel. He was promoted to assistant GM in 2021.

Before San Francisco, Peters spent eight seasons with the Denver Broncos, beginning as a scout before his promotion to assistant director of college scouting. In his final season in Denver, Peters was the director of college scouting.

He began his NFL career as a scout with the New England Patriots, a role in which he held for six seasons.

Peters is a native of Cupertino, Calif., and played football at UCLA. He has three Super Bowl rings from his time in New England and Denver. The 49ers are the NFC’s No. 1 seed in this season’s playoffs.

49ers assistant GM Adam Peters hired as Commanders GM

The #49ers front office is getting a big shakeup.

There’s a seismic shakeup coming in the 49ers’ front office. Assistant general manager Adam Peters, who has been in San Francisco since the 2017 season under general manger John Lynch, is joining the Commanders as their new GM according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

This is the second time the Commanders have tapped the 49ers’ front office for a new GM. They also hired Martin Mayhew away from San Francisco to be their GM ahead of the 2021 season. Mayhew’s status with Washington remains unclear, but he could return to the 49ers to replace Peters, who was promoted to assistant GM in 2021.

Peters has been in the NFL for 21 years and spent the last seven seasons in the Bay Area, where he met Warriors president of basketball operations Bob Myers. Myers was hired as part of an advisory committee hired by new Commanders owner Josh Harris to lead the search for the new leader of Washington’s front office.

San Francisco now has a gaping hole in its front office. Peters was a key component of a group that helped build a roster that’s gone to three of the last four NFC championship games.

While the team has Super Bowl aspirations to attend to for now, replacing Peters is going to be one of the biggest offseason boxes they’ll need to check once their playoff run is over.

Commanders reportedly down to 2 candidates for next head of football operations

The Commanders are down to two candidates for their next head of football operations.

And then there were two.

The Washington Commanders fired head coach/head of football operations Ron Rivera on Monday, one day after the team finished 4-13, and quickly went to work, finding his replacements.

Washington requested permission to speak with Adam Peters (49ers assistant GM), Ian Cunningham (Bears assistant GM), Alec Halaby (Eagles assistant GM), Mike Borgonzi (Chiefs assistant GM) and Glenn Cook (Browns assistant GM) to fill the head of operations role.

After interviewing all five candidates over a two-day period on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Commanders are down to two: Peters and Cunningham.

Peters and Cunningham will now go through a second round of interviews that will include owner Josh Harris’ minority partners, David Blitzer, Magic Johnson and Mitchell Rales, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

Harris promised a thorough but rapid process when he spoke to the media on Monday. That’s been the case. Washington has also requested permission to speak with at least seven head-coaching candidates but has yet to begin that process as it wants to have the new head of football operations in place beforehand.

Report: 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters finalist for Commanders GM job

A big change could be on the horizon for the 49ers’ front office:

The 49ers are one step closer to losing assistant general manager Adam Peters, who is a finalist for the Washington Commanders president of football operations job according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Washington narrowed its search to Peters and Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham per Jones’ report.

The Commanders and new owner Josh Harris’ advisory committee that includes former Golden State Warriors president of basketball operations Bob Myers have moved swiftly in their search. Peters was one of their first interviews, and he did well enough to earn a second interview with Harris’ group. They’ll be aiming to hire someone for that role so they can move forward with their offseason.

It’s not a surprise they targeted the 49ers’ assistant GM given his more than two decades of NFL experience and his integral role in the building of a San Francisco roster that’s been to three of the last four NFC championship games. There’s also a connection between Peters and Myers from their days as front office members in the Bay Area.

Peters began in San Francisco’s front office before the 2017 season. Myers at that point was leading the Warriors’ front office in the midst of their dominant run of five consecutive trips to the NBA Finals.

If Peters does leave the 49ers it will leave some sizable shoes to fill behind general manager John Lynch. There’s no final decision just yet, but the Commanders will surely be looking to land on a president of football operations sooner rather than later.

49ers insider: San Francisco assistant GM Adam Peters could go to Commanders

Could the Commanders have their next GM by the end of this week?

Have the Washington Commanders already found their next head of football operations/general manager?

Shortly after firing head coach Ron Rivera on Monday, owner Josh Harris announced he had formed an advisory committee to help him find the next head of football operations and head coach for the Commanders.

On Monday, the Commanders requested permission to speak with five candidates for their head of football operations/GM position: 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters, Browns assistant GM Glenn Cook, Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham, Chiefs assistant Mike Borgonzi and Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby.

Harris called Washington’s search a “thorough but rapid process.” He wasn’t kidding. The Commanders have scheduled meetings for all five candidates on Tuesday and Wednesday. Borgonzi, Cook and Peters interviewed on Tuesday, with Cunningham and Halaby scheduled to speak to Harris and his group on Wednesday.

By all accounts, Peters is Washington’s top target, and for good reason. In 21 NFL seasons, Peters has worked for New England, Denver and San Francisco. He has been with the 49ers since 2017 and played an integral role in developing what is arguably the NFL’s best roster. In recent seasons, other teams have requested permission to speak with Peters, but he wasn’t interested in leaving San Francisco.

Has that changed?

Matt Barrows covers the 49ers for The Athletic and believes the time may be right for Peters to make the move, with the Commanders being his preferred destination.

“I think the fact that he’s meeting with the Washington group right now or on his way to do that suggests that he’s ready this year to make the move,” Barrows said Tuesday on “Grant and Danny” on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C. “A lot of people I’ve talked to think that this is gonna happen, that he’s going to be the guy that the Commanders hire to be their next GM.”

One of the members of Washington’s advisory committee, Bob Myers — a former Golden State Warriors GM — has close ties with Peters. Peters also worked with current Washington GM Martin Mayhew for four seasons until Mayhew came to Washington in 2021.

Barrows discussed how John Lynch’s promotion this season from GM to president of football operations wasn’t done in order to promote Peters and that if Peters wanted to run his own team, he would need to go elsewhere.

Could the Commanders have their new head of football operations/GM by the end of this week?
