Former LSU pitcher Aaron Nola begins historic triple-play

Former LSU pitcher Aaron Nola kicked off the first 1-3-5 triple play since 1929.

Former LSU starting pitcher [autotag]Aaron Nola[/autotag] is having a year with the Philadelphia Phillies. Nola’s been one of the most consistent starters in the National League with a 119 ERA+ and 3.82 FIP.

In his start on Tuesday, Nola helped the Phillies defense make history, forcing the first 1-3-5 triple play since July 11, 1929.

It came in the bottom of the third when Nola threw a sinker to the Detroit Tigers’ lead-off man Matt Vierling. Nola induced soft contact and a broken bat before catching the ball. Nola tossed to first to get the second out with the Tigers’ baserunner away from the bag. A base running blunder on the other side of the diamond allowed Philly to get the third force at third, completing the play.

Nola went on to throw seven innings of one-run baseball. He struck out six and walked none. It was Nola’s seventh quality start in his last eight games.

Nola isn’t the only former LSU pitcher having success this year. [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] continues to impress as a rookie sensation and while [autotag]Kevin Gausman[/autotag] isn’t having his typical campaign, his FIP indicates he’s due for some positive regression.

Former LSU pitcher Aaron Nola signs massive new contract with Phillies

One of the most reliable pitchers in the MLB has earned a massive new contract.

One of the most reliable pitchers in the MLB has earned a massive new contract. [autotag]Aaron Nola[/autotag], Baton Rouge’s very own superstar, has played for the Philadelphia Phillies since they drafted him in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft.

After nine years in the majors at Philly, Nola became a free agent and he was allowed to shop around the market and choose where he wanted to spend the next part of his career. There were multiple teams vying for his talents but the two main ones were the Phillies and their division rival the Atlanta Braves.

At the end of it all, Nola decided to return to the city of brotherly love. The Phillies signed Nola to a 7-year, $172 million contract with no player or team options. It is the biggest contract the Phillies have ever given to a pitcher and their 11th-largest contract in franchise history.

Five former LSU players set for MLB postseason

These five former Tigers are hoping to make a World Series run this October.

The MLB playoffs begin on Tuesday night and a handful of former LSU players are set to appear.

Last year, we saw [autotag]Aaron Nola[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Bregman[/autotag] both make World Series runs with the Astros eventually winning it all.

According to BetMGM, the Braves are the current title favorites at +250.

The top five is rounded out by the Dodgers, Astros, Orioles and Phillies.

Several players from this group contributed to postseason runs at LSU, including Nola, who helped lead LSU to a CWS title in 2009.

Here’s a closer look at the five former Tigers competing in October.

Every former LSU player set to make a 2023 MLB roster

Here are the eight former LSU players expected to make an impact with a big-league club

Opening Day is fast approaching.

Spring has sprung and professional baseball is upon us. While LSU is having success on the college front, several alumni are enjoying stints in the big leagues. LSU has eight former players expected to earn significant playing time with even more in the minors.

We’re taking a look at the expectations for each as they begin their 2023 season. Eight is a decent number. Baseball isn’t like football where nearly everyone goes to college, but LSU still produces a good amount of talent.

We begin with the biggest name: [autotag]Alex Bregman[/autotag].

World Series 2022: Game 1 odds, predictions and prop pick for Phillies vs. Astros

Predictions for Game 1 of the World Series.

Picking a winner in the first game of the World Series is a bit tricky when the teams at hand haven’t seen much of the pitchers they’re about to face, which is the case when it comes to the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies.

Very few Phillies have had more than a couple at-bats in their careers against Astros ace Justin Verlander. The ones who have, had very marginal success. As a team, Philadelphia’s hitters are a career .184 against the likely AL Cy Young winner.

Likewise, there isn’t a single Astros player with more than eight at-bats against Phillies starter Aaron Nola. They’ve hit just .130 against in him in their careers.

Batters will get very familiar with these two over the course of the series and maybe even get a read on their stuff. But in Game 1, after a five-day layoff since the end of the league championship series, I give the advantage to the pitchers and expect more of the same.

When these teams met in the final series of the regular season, Nola pitched a shutout through 6 2/3 innings of the first game with nine strikeouts and just two hits allowed. Verlander pitched a hitless five innings with 10 strikeouts in the second game. Each bullpen completed the shutouts.

If these staffs bring that type of stuff into Game 1, a winner might not be decided until the final innings. And though Nola — a full decade younger than Verlander — could potentially take his start deeper into the game, I expect Philadelphia’s bullpen to crack before Houston’s.

If the game is decided by the starters, I still expect it to be Houston’s lineup to come through first. Though Nola was terrific through his first two starts of the postseason, he allowed six runs and two homers through 4 2/3 innings of his last start in Game 2 of their series against the Padres. Verlander, on the other hand, allowed just one run and three hits in six innings against the Yankees in his last start.

Both offenses pack plenty of power, so all of this could very easily and quickly go out of the window once the game starts. And not since 2017 has Game 1 of the World Series seen fewer than eight runs scored, but I’ll lean on the recent trends and plus money for my favorite pick in this one, which is under 6.5 runs at +100 odds.

Prince’s Pick: Astros win 4-2

Prince’s Prop: Justin Verlander over 5.5 strikeouts (-160)

Nola brothers make MLB Playoff history

Austin and Aaron Nola became the first brothers to face off in a pitcher-hitter matchup in MLB Playoff history on Wednesday.

When [autotag]Austin Nola[/autotag] and [autotag]Aaron Nola[/autotag] faced off in Game 2 of the 2022 NLCS, they became the first brothers to face each other as pitcher and hitter in MLB postseason history.

The two former LSU stars have had great seasons for their respective teams. Both the Phillies (Aaron) and the Padres (Austin) were considered underdogs as they had to fight their way through the wild card series and face to top two teams in the National League, the Dodgers, and the Braves. Both teams beat the odds and now find themselves one series win away from playing for the World Series.

The brothers faced each other twice in Game 2, and Aaron won the first matchup, but Austin got the final laugh as he hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Phillies’ lead to 4-3. After taking a 4-0 lead early, the Phillies weren’t able to maintain that momentum as the Padres took Game 2 with an 8-5 win to tie the series 1-1.

Aaron and Austin Nola’s dad seemed very torn after Padres catcher got hit off Phillies pitcher

The Nola on Nola violence was too much to take!

For the first time in MLB playoff history, baseball fans were treated to a pitcher/batter brother matchup as the Philadelphia Phillies took on the San Diego Padres.

On Wednesday, Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola faced off against his brother Austin Nola — catcher for the San Diego Padres — in Game 2 of the NLCS. While pitcher Nola got the better of his brother the first time through the lineup, things changed dramatically for the Padres in the fifth inning.

With the Padres down 4-2, Austin Nola got the Padres furious, five-run rally started with a RBI single to right field that cut the Phillies’ lead to one. After the play, cameras panned over to the Nola brothers’ parents in the stands, with their dad looking incredibly conflicted over the series of events.

Seriously, how do you react in that situation? Unfortunately for Aaron Nola, he was chased in the inning as the Padres took a 7-4 lead that started from Austin Nola’s big time hit. Tough stuff right there.

Best MLB player props: Strikeouts should be aplenty in Phillies-Braves

Aaron Nola and Kyle Wright are both top 10 in K/9.

Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola hasn’t exactly been bad this season, but the team hasn’t won a single one of his starts since the opener.

Regardless, the righty regularly pitches into the sixth inning and ranks top five this season in strikeouts per nine innings. His Atlanta Braves counterpart on Thursday, Kyle Wright, also ranks top 10 while seeing the fruits of his labor pay off to the tune of a 4-2 record and 2.49 ERA.

Their duel headlines my top player props to watch for Thursday’s slate of games.

Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola struck out his older brother, Austin, and their dad had a classic reaction

What do you do here as a dad?!

Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola and Padres catcher Austin Nola are brothers and last night they faced each other for the first time at the major league level, which was pretty cool to see.

Well, it wasn’t cool for Austin (31) because in the second inning he got struck out by his younger brother, Aaron (28) in three pitches.

That’s just cold.

Aaron Nola became the first player in Phillies history to face a position-playing brother and he brought the heat in that second inning showdown. Three straight fastballs had his older brother heading back to the dugout in what must have been a frustrating walk.

Check this out:

His dad’s reaction (which his at the end of this video below0 was pretty great. Like, what do you do there as a dad?

Aaron really brought the heat to strike out his brother:

The bizarre coincidence behind Aaron Nola tying Tom Seaver’s strikeout record vs. the Mets

What a time to tie the MLB record for consecutive strikeouts!

Aaron Nola couldn’t have picked a better time to tie the MLB’s consecutive strikeout record. On Friday, Nola struck out 10 consecutive New York Mets batters for the Philadelphia Phillies, tying a 51-year-old record held by the great Tom Seaver.

Yes that Seaver, who spent 12 seasons pitching for the Mets and broke that same record while with New York back on April 22, 1970.

It’s a hilarious and incredibly Mets coincidence for Nola to tie Seaver’s strikeout record in this manner, a streak that was broken after Pete Alonso doubled on a 1-2 count in the bottom of the fourth. Here’s how Nola’s record-tying strikeout went down.

And here’s all of Nola’s strikeouts in the lead up to the record-tying moment.

An impressive feat indeed! Though Nola may not have broken the record, he tied it while pitching at Citi Field, which conveniently has an address named after Seaver and all he contributed to the Mets during his time there.

Not only that, the Mets were wearing their home jerseys with a No. 41 patch — Seaver’s number — on Friday’s game, adding to the spectacle of it all.

Talk about the most incredible and bizarre of coincidences. And what a moment for Nola too!
