Former Crimson Tide QB slams ‘different era’ at Alabama, blames TikTok and NIL

A.J. McCarron goes off on Alabama.

In parts of four seasons at quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2010-13, A.J. McCarron was a part of two national championship teams and enjoyed four victory cigars against the Tennessee Volunteers in the ‘Third Saturday in October’ rivalry.

It’s been over 10 years since McCarron last suited up in an Alabama uniform, but the former quarterback isn’t happy with what he sees from the Crimson Tide, especially after last week’s 24-17 loss to Tennessee that dropped Alabama to 5-2 and marked their second loss in three games under first-year coach Kalen DeBoer.

Appearing on the McCready & Siskey podcast this week with hosts Neal McCready and Tyler Siskey, McCarron tore into what he called a “different era” at Alabama, one that has seen a noticeable lack of discipline.

He claims that players are too focused on social media apps like TikTok and on the “personal gain” they can get from NIL initiatives.

“I think for sure the standard that everybody was used to for so long after Alabama went through a bunch of hell leading up to those glorious years, I think it’s definitely a different era,” McCarron said on the podcast. “I don’t think you’ll see the same standard from discipline, just things that the team seems to do.

“And it’s a new day and age. Everybody’s worried about f****** TikTok and having a reel and being on highlights from their personal self and personal gain and how much money they can get from NIL. I mean, we just didn’t have that s*** back then. So, it was a team sport. You came together as a team because you had one common goal, because you knew that’s how you were going to make your money was by winning.

“Winning attracts people to that program. It attracts scouts, GMs. It attracts ownership to allow yourself to have that opportunity to go make yourself a lot of money and change your family tree for a long period of time. You can just tell it’s not the same. So, I would think ‘Bama fans should get used to that in a way of, ‘Hey, it’s not gonna be what you knew from 2008 up ’til last year where there was just a certain standard.'”

McCarron was quick to add that he wasn’t attacking DeBoer or any other members of the Crimson Tide’s coaching staff.

“That’s not a knock on the coaching staff or a knock on anybody,” he said. “It’s just a different era. I think it’s just something that (the fans are) gonna have to buckle up if they’re not ready for it.”

It’s not the first time McCarron has sounded off on his former team.

Following Alabama’s 23-17 loss to Ole Miss in October 2014 during McCarron’s first year away from the program as a rookie with the Cincinnati Bengals, he called out the team for not having “true leaders.”

Nick Saban responded to McCarron’s comments at the time by saying, “I don’t know how A.J. would really know, but I don’t necessarily see that as the case.”

Alabama is ranked No. 15 in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll. The Crimson Tide host the No. 17 Missouri Tigers this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game can be seen on ABC.

Battlehawks QB AJ McCarron drops expletive during interview in UFL playoff game

AJ McCarron was quite honest during a TV interview on how he felt during the UFL playoff game

AJ McCarron was playing through pain during the St. Louis Battlehawks’ playoff game with the San Antonio Brahmas on Sunday.

Brock Huard interviewed the quarterback as the game was ongoing in the second half. McCarron, the former, Alabama great, didn’t mince words when asked how he was doing.

“I feel like expletive,” McCarron said.

Immediately after the question and salty response, the Battlehawks forced a turnover and picked the football up for a scoop and score to close their deficit.

Coach Anthony Becht was pumped as was McCarron’s wife, Katherine Webb, and mom, DeeDee McCarron.

AJ McCarron probably feels worse now as the Battlehawks lost to the Brahmas, 25-15, in the XFL Conference Championship Game.

AJ McCarron set to return to Alabama this weekend as the St. Louis Battlehawks play at Birmingham

After over a decade, AJ McCarron set to return to Alabama as St. Louis Battlehawks play at the Birmingham Stallions

After leaving the state of Alabama in 2013 as a 3x national champion with the Alabama Crimson Tide, A.J. McCarron will be making his long-awaited homecoming this Saturday. McCarron and his (5-1) St. Louis Battlehawks will be traveling to Birmingham, AL to take on the (6-0) Stallions in the season’s biggest game.

McCarron was initially a fifth-round pick to the Cincinnati Bengals back in the 2014 NFL draft but spent time in the league with five different teams. After over a year away from the game, McCarron was drafted to the Battlehawks of the XFL in November of 2022 and spent the 2023 spring with the team. McCarron was a superstar for St. Louis as he was the league passing TD leader, the completion percent leader and the passer rating leader.

The Bengals called McCarron in September of 2023 to join their practice squad to which he obliged. McCarron spent the remainder of the season with the Bengals, but asked for his release in February of 2024 to return to the Battlehawks.

This time, the Battlehawks are in the newly made UFL – a merger of the USFL and XFL, two formerly-seperate spring football leagues. With St. Louis coming from the XFL and Birmingham coming from the USFL, McCarron’s return to Alabama would not have been possible if not for the merger. It will be awesome to see No. 10 back in his home state for first time since 2013.

Watch: Puka Nacua’s brother sacked A.J. McCarron in standout UFL debut

Puka Nacua’s brother, Kai, brought down A.J. McCarron for a sack in the first week of the UFL on Saturday

Puka Nacua has become a household name in the NFL thanks to a historic rookie season in which he set the records for the most receptions and receiving yards ever by a first-year player. However, before he made it to the pros, his brother was playing defensive back a few years prior.

Kai Nacua, who also played at BYU, went undrafted in 2017 but played 16 games for the Browns as a rookie, making three starts. He didn’t play another game until 2020 and played his last game in 2021, but he’s not giving up his football dream yet.

During Saturday’s opening weekend in the UFL, Nacua was a defensive star for the Michigan Panthers. Nacua recorded a game-high 11 tackles, one sack and two tackles for a loss, helping his team to an 18-16 victory over the St. Louis Battlehawks. His highlight play was a sack on former Alabama QB A.J. McCarron in the first quarter.

Several players have gone from spring leagues to the NFL, so Nacua has a chance to do the same if he plays well in the UFL. It’s not easy to do, but perhaps a team in the NFL will give him another shot.

A.J. McCarron delivers another stellar performance in the XFL

Former Alabama star A.J. McCarron continues to shine in the XFL!

The St, Louis Battlehawks improved to 4-2 on the season Saturday night with a 29-6 beatdown of the Las Vegas Vipers.

The Battlehawks were led by an impressive performance from legendary Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback, A.J. McCarron.

McCarron finished the game 23-29 for 236 yards and three touchdowns.

The Battlehawks’ success this season has been in large part to the clutch play of McCarron who has helped lead two come-from-behind victories and has been one of the best quarterbacks in the XFL.

For the season, McCarron has now passed for 1,322 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. All while completing over 67% of his pass attempts.

Up next for McCarron and the Battlehawks is a trip to Texas next Sunday to take on the Houston Roughnecks.

Former Bengals QB AJ McCarron is great example of why XFL will succeed

AJ McCarron made a good point after another XFL comeback victory.

Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron keeps making big splashes because he’s now authored two impressive late comeback victories for his 2-0 St. Louis Battlehawks to start the new XFL season.

But he also brought up a great point after the latest win that hints at why the XFL might just last this time out.

Speaking in a postgame interview, McCarron touched on how being a backup in the NFL was great, but he really just wants to get on the field and play.

“It’s just fun to come out here and play,” McCarron said on the broadcast. “I’ve missed playing. Not always just being a backup. And that’s a great living, it really is and I absolutely love it. But I love playing. This is special and I can’t thank the XFL enough.”

If more backup NFL players take this mentality and go over to the XFL, it’s going to boost the quality of the play on the field and help the league stick.

It remains to be seen whether that happens, but McCarron’s point is a good one and he’s not the only former Bengals player proving it. Former linebacker Jordan Evans continues to excel in his new starting role with the Seattle Sea Dragons, too.

Former Bengals QB AJ McCarron leads another epic comeback XFL win

AJ McCarron is taking the XFL by storm with his undefeated team.

Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron has done it again.

In his team’s XFL season opener, McCarron led a wicked final drive to steal a win over an opponent coached by former Steelers wideout Hines Ward.

On Thursday night, McCarron did it again, marching his St. Louis Battlehawks down the field and setting up the game-winning field goal to beat the Seattle Sea Dragons and move to 2-0.

Along the way, McCarron threw for 184 yards and a touchdown while leading the team in rushing with 41 yards and a score.

McCarron’s late-game heroics for a second week in a row have his team undefeated for one of the XFL’s most popular teams (football does well in St. Louis, remember?) and they’ve yet to even play a home game.

A.J. McCarron leads St. Louis to dramatic XFL 2023 victory over Seattle

The St. Louis Battlehawks are 2-0 after their second comeback victory

A.J. McCarron specializes in overcoming XFL 2023 deficits.

The former star quarterback at Alabama led a comeback and game-winning drive for the second time as the St. Louis Battlehawks upended the Seattle Sea Dragons 20-18 on Thursday night.

The Battlehawks (2-0) trailed by 12 points, took the lead, only to fall behind with 1:21 left when Ben DiNucci hit Jordan Veasy with an 8-yard TD pass.

The 3-point conversion failed and McCarron took the field with 71 seconds left.

He led a 50-yard drive that concluded when Donny Hageman III connected on a 44-yard field goal as time expired.

The winning kick was set up by a short pass from McCarron to Austin Proehl for 9 yards that set St. Louis up at the 26 with 4 seconds left. Proehl’s dad, Ricky, played 2 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks in his long NFL career.

Hageman had missed a 50-yard field goal by about a foot on the drive prior to the one that saw Seattle (0-2) take the lead.

Giants worked out Jake Fromm, AJ McCarron and 6 others

The New York Giants worked out eight players over the past two days, including quarterbacks Jake Fromm and AJ McCarron.

From Monday afternoon into Tuesday afternoon, the New York Giants held a series of workouts and visits. Among those in attendance was the team’s former safety, Landon Collins.

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was also in town, although he was not visiting on any official NFL business.

With Daniel Jones (ankle) and Tyrod Taylor (concussion) both injured, the Giants also hosted a slew of quarterbacks on a tryout basis, just as head coach Brian Daboll said they would.

The group, led by ex-Giant Jake Fromm, also included former Alabama standout AJ McCarron and another former Giant, Brian Lewerke.

Fromm famously took over for an injured Jones and veteran Mike Glennon last season in a game that saw him run back-to-back quarterback sneaks to clear room for the punter. That decision ultimately cost head coach Joe Judge his job.

But Fromm does have familiarity with both general manager Joe Schoen and the aforementioned Daboll from their time in Buffalo. Lewerke was also in East Rutherford when that duo took over earlier this year, but was ultimately waived in mid-May.

In addition to the quarterbacks, the Giants also had wide receivers Victor Bolden and Jontre Kirklin, guard Solomon Kindley, and linebacker Ulysees Gilbert in for workouts.

None of the players were immediately signed to a contract but that may change on Wednesday. The Giants may also circle back on Collins once their forced roster shuffling comes to an end.
