The Denver Broncos have agreed to trade a fourth-round NFL draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for cornerback A.J. Bouye. The move won’t become official until the new league year begins on March 18 but it’s going to happen as long as Bouye passes his physical examination.

By trading for Bouye, Denver has agreed to take on his contract, which has two years remaining.

The Broncos will now be responsible for paying Bouye about $13.5 million in 2020 and 2021, according to Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com. None of that is guaranteed, so it’s a low-risk move for Denver.

Before making the trade, the Broncos had around $70 million in salary cap space, according to OTC. After accounting for Bouye’s salary, Denver will be down to $56.5 million in cap space.

The Broncos are expected to cut quarterback Joe Flacco later this offseason, a move that would save more than $10 million. That would bring Denver’s salary cap space to $65.5 million.

So after making his first big move of the offseason, Broncos general manager John Elway still has plenty of cap to work with.

Chris Harris reacts to Broncos trading for A.J. Bouye

Here’s how Chris Harris reacted after the Broncos agreed to trade for Jaguars cornerback A.J. Bouye.

The Broncos have agreed to trade a fourth-round draft pick to the Jaguars in exchange for cornerback A.J. Bouye. The trade won’t become official until March 18 but that hasn’t stopped fans and pundits from sharing their thoughts on the trade on Twitter.

Even cornerback Chris Harris — who Bouye might be replacing — weighed in on social media, tweeting a congratulations message to Bouye.

By acquiring Bouye, Denver now appears much less likely to re-sign Harris, though that still remains a possibility. The Broncos still want “to be in the mix” when Harris begins negotiating with teams, according to Brandon Krisztal of KOA 850 AM & 94.1 FM.

If the Broncos are able to land Bouye and re-sign Harris, the team’s secondary will greatly improve from last season — especially if Bryce Callahan returns to full health and plays in 2020.

For now, though, we can only assume Harris is less likely to return than he was before the Bouye trade.

As many fans and pundits noted on Twitter, it will be interesting to see how Denver moves forward with pending free agent Chris Harris. There’s still a chance that Harris will re-sign with the Broncos, but that’s beginning to seem less likely after the team acquired Bouye.

Report: Jaguars were going to release CB A.J. Bouye

By trading for Jaguars cornerback A.J. Bouye, the Broncos are ensuring that they won’t have to outbid other teams for his services.

[jwplayer jQHHp1s6-ThvAeFxT]

The Jacksonville Jaguars were going to release cornerback A.J. Bouye, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Instead, the team was able to trade him to the Denver Broncos for a fourth-round draft pick.

So did the Broncos make a bad move by trading for a cornerback who was going to be cut anyway? Not necessarily.

Denver still has a fourth-round pick — the selection they traded to Jacksonville was acquired in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. The Broncos also won’t have to get into a bidding war for Bouye by trading for him before he hits the market.

The Jaguars received “a lot of interest” in Bouye, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. So had he been released to free agency, the 28-year-old cornerback probably would have been in high demand.

Bouye “was the target for Denver all along,” according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. By trading a mid-round pick for him, Broncos general manager John Elway ensures that he gets his guy without having to outbid other teams for his services.

Denver has to be happy with this trade.

Report: Jags to trade CB A.J. Bouye to Broncos for a 2020 fourth-round pick

The Jags will be parting ways with one of their key veterans in A.J. Bouye, who will be traded to the Broncos.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars needing to free up some cap space, it appears they’ve decided to move on from one of their top veterans in cornerback A.J. Bouye. Per ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Jags will be trading him to the Denver Broncos for a 2020 fourth-round pick, however, the deal can’t be processed until the new league year.

Bouye, 28, was set to free up over $11 million for the Jags if released this year. Though he’s proven to be a pretty good player, the argument could be made that his cap hit on the season was simply too high for a team in the Jags’ current state, as they were over the cap prior to the combine. Now, with his departure and the releases of defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and linebacker Jake Ryan, the Jags have found themselves at over $32.3 million in available cap space, per Over the Cap.

Bouye signed signed a five-year, $67.5 million contract with the Jags on March 11, 2017 after leaving the Houston Texans. While with the team, he accumulated 175 tackles and eight picks. In his first year, he was named a Pro Bowler and was named a second-team All-Pro after garnering 56 tackles and six picks.

With Chris Harris Jr. set to be an unrestricted free-agent, Bouye will now be Denvers top cornerback. With Von Miller and Bradley Chubb rushing the passer, he should be able to find success easily in Denver and help them get back to their postseason ways.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to trade a fourth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for cornerback A.J. Bouye, according to multiple media reports. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.

The trade will not become official until the new league year begins on March 18. Denver traded a fourth-round pick it acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. The Broncos still have their own fourth-round pick.

By trading for Bouye, Denver is agreeing to inherit his contract, which has two years remaining. The 28-year-old cornerback is scheduled to have salary cap hits worth around $15.5 million in each of the next two seasons.

Bouye entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of UCF with the Houston Texans in 2013. After spending the first four years of his career in Houston, Bouye signed a five-year, $67.5 million contract with the Jaguars in 2017. He made the Pro Bowl after totaling six interceptions during his first season in Jacksonville.

After acquiring Bouye, the Broncos appear less likely to re-sign pending free agent cornerback Chris Harris, a four-time Pro Bowler. Harris has said he is open to returning to Denver if the team wants him but the Broncos appear to be going in a different direction in the secondary.

Harris will turn 31 in June. Bouye will turn 29 in August.

A.J. Bouye should receive a lot of interest on the open market if released

The Jags could release A.J. Bouye as a cap casualty and he shouldn’t have issues finding work.

In a matter of weeks, the Jacksonville Jaguars will be removing themselves from various cap casualties to help their salary cap situation. One player who Jaguars senior writer John Oehser believes may be a part of those cuts is cornerback A.J. Bouye, who is one of the teams better players when he’s on his game.

It wasn’t all that long ago in 2016 when the Jags signed the young cornerback to a five-year $67.5 million contract with $26 million in guarantees. He’s now played through three years of that deal, and for the most part, he proved to be worth the money throughout. Bouye was able to garner second-team All-Pro honors and Pro Bowl honors in 2017 and has been a leader in the locker room. However, the Jags have come upon a time where they need to get cheaper on the defensive side and Bouye’s play in 2019 seems to indicate the Jags need to go in a different direction as his cap hit will be a whopping $15.4 million.

By releasing him, the team would save $11.4 million, which the Jags could do a lot with, including pay a majority of their 2020 rookie class (projected to cost them $12 million) or pay out the first year of Yannick Ngakoue’s contract extension. They also could end up finding a cheaper option than Bouye at cornerback on the open market.

If the Jags decide to part ways, it appears there could be many suitors out there as Bouye has a lot left in the tank at 28 years of age. He could especially flourish with a team that has a solid pass rush in place and a better front seven than the Jags in general.

Two suitors could even be within the division in the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans, both of whom have ties to Bouye.

In the case of the Texans, that’s where Bouye previously came from. They initially picked him up as an undrafted player in 2013, but when it came time to pay up, they weren’t willing to make the young cornerback one of the highest-paid at his position.

Presently, the Texans still need help within their secondary and are an enticing team in the sense that they are a few players from being a Super Bowl-caliber team. Now that he’s received his huge payday, maybe the Texans’ decision to let him go could be water under the bridge and a reunion could happen in the spring.

As for the Titans, Bouye has ties to coach Mike Vrabel, who was a part of the Texans’ staff from 2014—17. After initially starting his time off with the team as their linebackers coach, he eventually became the Texans’ defensive coordinator, where he worked with Bouye more directly. Adding him would give the Titans an upgrade over Malcolm Butler in the eyes of some, however, the team is in a situation where they have to address other priorities first.

Other teams that could be on the market for a cornerback include the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, and Seattle Seahawks to name a few. So if the Jags release him, look for Bouye to find work relatively fast.

Could the Titans sign CB A.J. Bouye?

The Tennessee Titans have a host of important decisions to make with both free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft looming near.

The Tennessee Titans have a host of important decisions to make with both free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft looming near.

While quarterback and running back sit atop the list between either re-signing or replacing Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry, respectively, cornerback could also be a position the Titans consider.

Jacksonville Jaguars team writer John Oesher wrote that he expected A.J. Bouye to be released.

The team does have Malcolm Butler and Adoree Jackson on the roster, but could add a taller player like A.J. Bouye from the Jacksonville Jaguars for some extra talent and solidity.

[lawrence-related id=25216]

Bouye already has connections to Tennessee, considering he and Vrabel both spent three years together with the Houston Texans from 2014-16.

He’d give the Titans more size at the position at 6-foot, and totals 315 tackles, four for loss, one quarterback hit, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 14 interceptions and one touchdown over seven seasons between the Texans and the Jaguars.

Last season, he tallied 65 tackles, one for loss and one interception.

It will be interesting to see what moves both the Jaguars and the Titans make ahead of the 2020 season, but bringing Bouye over to Nashville could certainly be a positive one for Tennessee.

5 potential salary cap casualties that could interest the Eagles

A.J. Bouye among 5 potential salary-cap casualties that could interest the Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles enter the 2020 NFL offseason with a need for dynamic playmakers on offense as Howie Roseman and company look to upgrade the defense at several pertinent positions also.

With the Eagles needing playmakers and upgrades on both sides of the ball and reduced prices, here are five potential salary-cap casualties that could interest the Birds:

***

1. A.J. Bouye, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars cornerback is due $15.4 million next season and his recent play doesn’t suggest that he’s worth that type of money anymore. At just 28 years of age, Bouye has both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors on his resume.

NFL.com gives Jags an A- for 2019 draft class in season review

In a year where a lot didn’t go right for the Jacksonville Jaguars, many would agree that the team’s 2020 draft class did their part. Count NFL.com’s Gennaro Filice amongst those who were impressed with the group as he gave the Jags’ class an A- in his recent review of the league’s draft classes.

A big reason for praising the class, of course, was the impact of rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew II, who went 6-6 as a starter.

Let’s start with the most interesting development in an otherwise-forgettable Jaguars season: MINSHEW MANIA!! OK, I won’t go completelyoverboard here, because let’s be honest: At least some of the allure had to do with the mustache and the headband and the distinct je ne sais quoi that tickled the average football watcher’s fancy. That said, the Jock Strap Kingposted a 21:6 TD-to-INT ratio and went 6-6 as a rookie starter for a team that finished the season at 6-10. Fumbles were an issue, but overall, he clearly outplayed prized free-agent signee Nick Foles.

As many would imagine, Filice also praise the performance of the Jags’ first-round selection, Josh Allen, as he lead all rookies in sacks in 2019 with 10.5.

Five rounds and 171 picks prior, the Jags had Allen fall right into their lap, and the no-brainer selection paid off in a major way, racking up 10.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Resident draft guru Daniel Jeremiah ranked Allen as his No. 5 overall rookie (second on defense, behind only Nick Bosa) and offered this enticing appraisal: “He has the potential to eventually lead the league in sacks.”

Without a doubt, the Jags got two of the most productive rookies in the whole 2020 class between Minshew and Allen, but when you add in the fact that right tackle Jawaan Taylor was the only rookie in the league to play 100% of his snaps, it’s hard not to have hope about the future production of the roster.

In his review, Filice looked ahead to the needs of the Jags heading forward. He stated what many have echoed and that’s the fact that the Jags need to pay Yannick Ngakoue and deemed Marcell Dareus as a player who could be released or restructured to make the cap space for Ngakoue’s deal. He added that Calais Campbell was in the same boat as well as cornerback A.J. Bouye.

Of the three, I believe Campbell, who is the heart and soul of the defense is the most likely to stay. Releasing Dareus, which I feel is likely, would be a tremendous relief off the cap as he’d free up over $20 million.

Bouye on the other hand may have a 50-50 shot to stay or be released. He’d free up over $10 million if released. His fate could boil down to whether or not he wants to restructure, and if he doesn’t, the Jags may look in the draft for an answer.
