Jaguars inactives: 2 key players to miss season finale

The Jaguars will be without these two veteran leaders as it was announced that both players will be inactive against the Colts Week 17.

In a season filled with adversity and inconsistency, Leonard Fournette and AJ Bouye have been two of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ most reliable players. Unfortunately, the Jaguars will be without these two veteran leaders as it was announced that both players will be inactive against the Indianapolis Colts Week 17.

Fournette, a player often criticized for his injury history, played in 15 regular season games and one could argue he has been the team’s MVP in 2019. The former fourth overall pick has galloped on his way to 1,152 yards rushing as well as 522 yards receiving, both career highs for the young halfback. He has become the team’s best playmaker over the course of the year. However, he announced that he came down with the flu Saturday, which means Ryquell Armstead will start in his place.

Bouye has had quite the season. Early on fans were expecting him to be a cap casualty because of Jalen Ramsey needing a contract extension. That, of course, wouldn’t be the case as Ramsey was dealt to the Los Angeles Rams, catapulting Bouye to the Jags No. 1 corner spot. Overall, the former All-Pro has performed well, covering opposing team’s best receivers. Unfortunately, the team will be without him in their last game of the season as Bouye has been dealing with a wrist injury.

Both injuries definitely don’t help the Jaguars’ cause as they will could surpass their 2018 win total with a win. Still, in a divisional game, crazy things can happen as we’ve already witnessed with the Miami Dolphins upsetting the New England Patriots Week 17.

As for the Colts, here are their inactives for the season finale matchup.

Jaguars likely to be without Leonard Fournette, A.J. Bouye vs. Colts

Jaguars to be without two starters.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are likely to be without running back Leonard Fournette and cornerback A.J. Bouye for the regular-season finale Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts at TIAA Bank Field.

Fournette, who is dealing with the flu, announced on Twitter that he wouldn’t be able to play in the game. The Jaguars also downgraded Bouye from doubtful to out due to a wrist injury.

Not that any of this truly matters for the game. Both teams are eliminated from the playoffs and are looking toward their draft spot in the 2020 NFL draft.

But Fournette’s absence should make it a much easier game for the Colts defense to finish the 2019 season on a strong note. With Bouye also out, the Colts offense should find it easier to throw the ball over the middle of the field.

The Colts and Jaguars are slated for a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff at TIAA Bank Field.

5 Jaguars to watch vs. Colts

The Jags and Colts will duke it out on last time in 2019, and as underdogs, the Jags will need DJ Chark and several other players to step up.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have almost arrived to the most important offseason in franchise history, but before they get there, they must take care of business in their 2019 season finale against the Indianapolis Colts. As the underdogs for Sunday’s game, they will need several players to step up and here are the five we think could play a big role in Week 17’s AFC South battle:

RB Ryquell Armstead

Saturday afternoon, running back Leonard Fournette announced that he wouldn’t be playing against the Colts after he was downgraded to doubtful on the final injury report with the flu. With that being the case, rookie tailback Ryquell Armstead will get his first career start.

With or without Fournette, the key for the Jags will be to control the clock, which means offensive coordinator John DeFilippo should make him the biggest part of the game plan. In the limited time Armstead has seen on the field, he’s also been a solid receiver, so that may be an asset in which DeFilippo may want to consider using as the Colts’ passing defense (No. 22) is significantly worse than their rush defense (No. 8).

Gardner Minshew, Leonard Fournette amongst 6 players ruled as questionable vs. Colts

The Jacksonville Jaguars only ruled out one player for their season finale against the Indianapolis Colts in receiver Michael Walker (hamstring), but there were several starters ruled questionable. On the offensive side, Gardner Minshew II (shoulder) and Leonard Fournette (neck) will be game day decisions, while A.J. Bouye (wrist) will be one on the defensive side.

Fournette and Walker didn’t practice Friday, however, Bouye and Minshew were limited. That’s likely not a good sign for Fournette, who has played in all of the Jags’ games this year and has done a good job staying healthy. If he’s unable to play, rookie Ryquell Armstead and Devine Ozigbo are the only two other tailbacks on the roster, while Nick Foles would replace Minshew and Brandon Watson or Parry Nickerson would get an opportunity in Bouye’s place.

Another key player who surfaced on the injury report was receiver Dede Westbrook (neck/shoulder), who didn’t practice Friday after fully participating Wednesday and Thursday. If he can’t play, the Jags will have DJ Chark Jr., Chris Conley, Keelan Cole, C.J. Board available at the receiver position.

As for the Indianapolis Colts, they ruled two players out in cornerback Quincy Wilson and tailback Jordan Wilkins. However, it hasn’t been revealed as to what players have been ruled questionable, but we’ll provide an update on their full report when it becomes available.

DJ Chark ruled questionable vs. Falcons

The Jacksonville Jaguars had full participation at practice for the second consecutive day and only one player surface on their final injury report. That player was receiver DJ Chark Jr., who was limited all week. Chark, who injured his ankle …

The Jacksonville Jaguars had full participation at practice for the second consecutive day and only one player surface on their final injury report. That player was receiver DJ Chark Jr., who was limited all week.

Chark, who injured his ankle against the Los Angeles Chargers Week 13, began cutting and running this week. That was excellent news for the fanbase when considering he was seen leaving Week 13’s game in a boot.

With the Falcons passing defense being ranked 24rd and their offense being one of the top passing units, the Jags could use Chark desperately to help them in a battle that could get ugly if the Jags start slow.

The Jags’ Week 15 opponents, the Atlanta Falcons, only had one player to surface in the status column and it was guard James Carpenter (concussion), who was ruled out for Sunday and eventually placed on injured reserve. However, starters Julio Jones (shoulder),  Ricardo Allen (shoulder) and kicker Younghoe Koo (left foot) all will take the field Sunday.

Injury report: Jags have full participation in practice Thursday

The Jags didn’t have a single player miss practice Thursday ad veterans Brandon Linder and Calais Campbell returned to the field.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had two players to miss practice Wednesday in center Brandon Linder (knee) and defensive lineman Calais Campbell (back) but both returned to the field on a limited basis, giving the team full participation.

The injury report for Thursday overall was pretty easy to breakdown as receiver Dede Westbrook (neck/shoulder) was the lone member who was a full participant and the rest of the players listed were limited. Thursday marked his second consecutive day of fully participating and it appears he’ll do the same Friday.

Receiver DJ Chark Jr., who missed the Jags’ last game, was once again limited due to the ankle injury he sustained Week 13 against the Los Angeles Chargers. In all probability, that’s a good sign that he may be ready to take the field Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Quarterback Gardner Minshew II (shoulder), cornerbacks A.J. Bouye (hamstring) and D.J. Hayden (knee), offensive tackle Cam Robinson (knee), and pass-rusher Josh Allen (shoulder) were some other notables who were listed on the injury report.

On the Falcons’ end, receiver Julio Jones (shoulder) and safety Ricardo Allen remained limited just as they were Wednesday. However, kicker Younghoe Koo was upgraded too full.

Their full injury report can be seen here.

Jaguars Week 15 injury report: WR DJ Chark still not participating due to ankle injury

DJ Chark’s status against the Raiders seems to be in danger as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

There were only two changes made to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ injury report Thursday as both veterans Calais Campbell (back) and Brandon Linder (knee) were upgraded from being non-participants on Wednesday to limited participants on Thursday. Both veterans typically start the week with a day of not participating, however, their status on Thursday indicates that both will ease their way to full participation Friday.

The only player who didn’t practice Thursday was receiver DJ Chark. He’s still recovering from the ankle injury he sustained in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers when defensive back Jaylen Watkins tackled him and the second-year receiver was taken to the medical room. However, head coach Doug Marrone told the media that Chark would travel with the team, but his chances right now look slim after missing two days of practice.

On the Oakland Raiders’ end, there were two players who were on Wednesday’s injury report that had a change in status. Offensive guard Gabe Jackson (knee) was downgraded to not participating after being limited Wednesday, while receiver Hunter Renfrow (rib) was upgraded to limited participation.

There were also two editions to the list in receiver Marcell Ateman (rib) and safety Erik Harris (hamstring), both of whom were limited.

4 Jaguars to watch on defense vs. Chargers

The Jags will need their defense to step up if they are to defeat the Chargers Sunday, making Yannick Ngakoue a key player to watch.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ chances to make the playoffs are slim, but they at least want to go out with a bang this month. They will have a chance to end their four-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday but will need some help from their defense, which has looked like a shell of themselves as of late.

Here are four players who the Jags will need to step up come Sunday if they are to defeat the Chargers, who are also looking to end a losing streak of their own:

LB Donald Payne

Donald Payne played lights out while starting in Myles Jack’s place Week 13 against the Tampa Bay Bucs. He was able to accumulate 13 total tackles and a sack and will now be the starter at middle linebacker for the remainder of the season because Jack was placed on injured reserve this week.

With Jack having a terrible showing in the middle this year, it’s unknown if he’ll play there next year, especially with the possibility of the coaching staff being let go. That said, Payne can make his case to start in the middle with a strong day against the Chargers and beyond.

Jags list TE Seth Devalve as doubtful, safety Ronnie Harrison as questionable vs. Chargers

The Jacksonville Jaguars released their final injury report for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, and just two players surfaced in the status column. Those two players were safety Ronnie Harrison (concussion), who was ruled questionable and Seth Devalve (oblique), who was ruled doubtful.

Harrison missed the Jags’ last game against the Tampa Bay Bucs after sustaining a concussion in the first-quarter of the game prior against the Tennessee Titans. He didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday, but was limited Friday.

DeValve, on the other hand, hasn’t played since before the Jags’ bye week. He sustained an oblique injury heading into the Jags’ Week 11 game against the Indianapolis Colts and hasn’t played in a game since. He was limited Friday, but it feels like the Jags are unlikely to push him at this point. He has a better chance to return later down the road if anything.

The remainder of the players on the Jags’ injury report were full participants, including notables DJ Chark, Dede Westbrook, Calais Campbell, A.J. Bouye, Donald Payne and Brandon Linder.

A.J. Bouye’s postgame comments are telling of disconnect in Jags’ defense

A.J. Bouye shared some telling comments with the media which shows why the Jags are performing poorly.

The Jacksonville Jaguars suffered yet another loss Sunday after a battle against the Tennessee Titans that was competitive in the first half, but not so much in the second as the final score was 42-10. There was enough blame to go around for both sides but the defense, which consists of the team’s best players, once again allowed over 400 yards on the day. Of course, the unit’s abysmal showing left fans highly upset and looking for answers, something the staff and players seemingly don’t have at the moment.

After Sunday’s game, Jags cornerback A.J. Bouye offered some striking comments that displayed just how out of sync the team was Sunday:

“At certain times as a corner, the most frustrating thing is to know a route is coming and you are yelling because you know where your help is supposed to be, and it’s not there,” Bouye said. “[Our issues] a mix of everything. We aren’t doing the things we need to be for 60 minutes.”

When looking at how things transpired, it’s worth noting that safety Ronnie Harrison had to leave the game early with a concussion. Andrew Wingard replaced him but struggled mightily, especially in coverage. With him not taking a lot of snaps with the starters, it’s possible he was a part of the disconnect in which Bouye spoke on Sunday. That’s not to say the veteran was calling anyone out, however, he more so was trying to paint a picture of how out of sync the defense was as a whole.

We’ll have to see if Harrison clears the concussion protocol and returns and will also have to see if the Jags’ defense as a whole improves heading forward. At the moment, that’s hard to envision after the attention to detail the Jags supposedly put into last week’s practice but time will tell.
