Kyle Shanahan gave up play-calling duties in 49ers 2024 season finale

Kyle Shanahan gave up play calling duties on Sunday.

There was a fun wrinkle in the San Francisco 49ers’ season finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco on Sunday reported via head coach Kyle Shanahan that 49ers offensive passing game specialist Klay Kubiak called plays in Week 18.

This was Kubiak’s regular-season debut as a play-caller in the NFL. He also called plays for two preseason games this year in his first stint in his current position. In 2022 and 2023 he was an assistant quarterbacks coach. In 2021, his first year with San Francisco, he was a defensive quality control coach.

The 49ers scored 24 points and averaged 6.0 yards per play with backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs starting under center. No. 1 wide receiver Jauan Jennings was also ejected during the first half after getting 10 targets in the first two quarters, forcing Kubiak to adjust to some different personnel. He also helped guide running back Patrick Taylor to a career-high 109 yards in an impressive outing for the fourth-year veteran.

It’s unclear why Shanahan afforded the opportunity to an assistant. The 49ers didn’t have much to play for with no postseason in play and their position cemented at the bottom of the NFC West. If there was ever a regular-season game where Shanahan would give up play-calling duties, Sunday’s season finale made a lot of sense.

The likelihood Shanahan is considering handing off those responsibilities to an offensive coordinator long-term is slim. Chances are he gave Kubiak the opportunity so he could get experience calling plays since his next job would likely involve play-calling as an offensive coordinator.

49ers miss out on top 10 pick in 2025 NFL draft order

The 49ers landed a pick just outside the top 10 in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.

While the San Francisco 49ers chances of a spot in the playoffs have been decided for some time now, their loss in Week 18 to the Arizona Cardinals helped officially turn the page to the offseason.

With the regular season wrapped up, the 49ers now know when they’ll be scheduled to be on the clock in the first round of the 2025 edition of the NFL draft.

With their record at 6-11, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch will be on the clock just outside of the top 10 with the No. 11 overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. The No. 11 selection in the draft will be the highest pick the 49ers have received since selecting Trey Lance No. 3 overall in the 2021 draft.

The New Orleans Saints (No. 9) and Chicago Bears (No. 10) will be on the clock before the 49ers with the Dallas Cowboys (No. 12) and Miami Dolphins (No. 13) will follow. The 49ers will hold the highest pick in the NFC West with the Arizona Cardinals drafting at No. 16 and the Seattle Seahawks drafting at No. 18.

Here’s the 2025 NFL draft order for non-playoff teams:

1. Tennessee Titans (3-14)
2. Cleveland Browns (3-14)

49ers RB Isaac Guerendo carted off with knee and ankle injuries

49ers RB Isaac Guerendo was carted off early vs. Arizona.

San Francisco running back Isaac Guerendo was injured and carted off early during the 49ers‘ season finale versus the Arizona Cardinals.

On San Francisco’s opening series and on Guerendo’s second carry, the rookie from Louisville got twisted up as he rushed for a pair of yards. Guerendo required the cart to exit the playing surface at State Farm Stadium and the team didn’t wait to rule him out.

The 49ers ruled Guerendo out with a knee and ankle injury.

With Guerendo out of the equation, San Francisco is down to just one healthy running back in Patrick Taylor Jr.

Entering Sunday, Taylor had appeared in six games this season, carrying 22 times for 74 rushing yards with a 3-yard touchdown against the Chicago Bears on Dec. 8.

Taylor is a fourth-year pro from Memphis. Prior to this season with San Francisco, Taylor spent three seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Guerendo’s 2024 season comes to a close with 84 carries, 420 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. Guerendo was selected by the 49ers in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft.

As San Francisco readies for its final contest of the season, the 49ers will do so without their starting quarterback. San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy is one of five 49ers players listed “out” on the team’s Week 18 injury report.

Prediction and betting odds for 49ers vs. Cardinals in Week 18

Analyzing Sunday’s 49ers vs. Cardinals game with odds and lines, predictions and best bets.

The San Francisco 49ers (6-10) head to State Farm Stadium to take on the Arizona Cardinals (7-9) to close their 2024 NFL season.

The 49ers will look to end the season on an uptick before heading into an offseason with plenty of important decisions to be made. Brock Purdy’s future with the 49ers and whether or not an extension gets ironed out will be one of the primary storylines surrounding San Francisco’s offseason.

Any final evaluations of Purdy won’t happen on Sunday. Purdy is sidelined with a right elbow injury and the 49ers will turn to Joshua Dobbs as its starting quarterback.

In the two team’s first meeting this season, San Francisco built a 23-10 halftime lead before watching Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray rally the Cardinals back in the second half en route to a 24-23 Arizona victory.

As kickoff approaches, here’s a look at the betting odds, including the point spread, money line figures and the over-under point total. Plus, a prediction on how this one plays out.

49ers vs. Cardinals prediction, pick

Prediction: Arizona 27, San Francisco 20

Arizona has starting quarterback Kyler Murray as a go, while San Francisco will be without Brock Purdy. That’s enough to lean the Cardinals’ direction in this regular season finale.

Consider both Kyler Murray (+110) and 49ers running back Isaac Guerendo (+150) as anytime touchdown scorers. With several key pass-catchers potentially out of the equation and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy as well, if San Francisco finds offensive success, there’s a good chance it’s Guerendo finding his way into the end zone.

A 49ers-Cardinals rock fight in Arizona to close dreadful 2024 season

We talked to our friends at Cards Wire about the season finale which doesn’t mean a ton for either team.

It looked in the middle of the season like the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals may be playing for the NFC West crown in Week 18.

The opposite turned out to be true.

Both teams are eliminated from the postseason and the NFC West standings are set with the 49ers in last place. Whichever team wins Sunday at State Farm Stadium will drop in the draft, but beyond that small consolation there isn’t a ton at stake.

We checked in with our buddy Jess Root from Cards Wire to get an idea of how Arizona’s season went and what we should be watching for from the 49ers’ final opponent of the 2024 campaign:

Niners Wire: Have the Cardinals been better or worse than you expected?

Jess Root: It’s a weird mix of both better and worse. If they win on Sunday, the 8-9 record will be exactly what I predicted back in May. Big picture, they achieved what was the best-case scenario for even the most optimistic projections — they would be better and still be not quite there. They were more inconsistent offensively than I expected. They had stretches when they were way better defensively than I expected. At 6-4, I thought they were gonna finish with 10-11 wins and win the division, and then they fell apart. So it was a roller coaster of being surprised and then fully disapointed.

NW: What are your thoughts on Marvin Harrison Jr. after Year 1?

JR: Man, he can be so good. He didn’t live up to incredibly lofty hopes for him. The projections of 1,100-1,200 yards were just too much.He looks so good at times and also has looked very much like a rookie. He has not gotten on the same page as Kyler Murray consistently. He has not been as great at contested balls as expected. But he is could flirt with 900 receiving yards. He will end up with better numbers as a rookie than his Hall of Fame father and future Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald. He will have nearly (if not more than) 900 yards when there he has a 100-catch, 1,100-yard teammate in Trey McBride. He will likely have the second-most receiving yards for any Cardinals rookie ever. He needs one score to match legends Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin for the most rookie touchdown catches. He’s had a pretty solid rookie campaign.I do think he needs a little more edge and “dog” to his game to take his production to the  next level. He has to want the ball with the same intensity as many of the greats, at least when it comes to attacking the football coming his way. But my guess is he will be really, really good as early as next season.

NW: How hard are we rooting against the Rams in the playoffs?

JR: Yeah, it stinks when someone in the division does well, although it does bring a little satisfaction when they do more than flame out in the first round as a sort of justification for them eliminating the Cardinals.

NW: Is Kyler Murray still the long-term answer for Arizona?

JR: There is beginning to be a little bit of doubt from the public. Thus far, that doubt has not crept into the minds of the coaches. What I try to point out is that Murray’s worst is average QB play. The ceiling is there but he isn’t hitting in consistently. And he is showing he can’t be a consistent top-five guy. But he has the tools to be great year in and year out.So as for moving on, one must tread lightly because it will be hard to do better.

NW: Who do you wanna see win the Super Bowl?

JR: I’m a Patrick Mahomes fan and, as long as it isn’t a team I actively root against, historically great things are something I love to watch. I want a three-peat. I want Mahomes to prove to everyone he’s still that guy. After that, I root for players or coaches. I like Baker Mayfield. I like Dan Campbell. I like Jayden Daniels and Kliff Kingsbury. I kind of root for Russell Wilson, even though I still have issues with wanting the Steelers to be successful.

NW: Prediction for this one.

JR: Whew this could be gross. The Cardinals are missing tackles. The 49ers will have Josh Dobbs at QB, who is only a threat if he can move. If the Cardinals can’t beat Dobbs….Anyway, the Cardinals should control this game. Cardinals 27, 49ers 19

WR Deebo Samuel is one of five ‘out’ on 49ers Week 18 injury report

All the latest updates and news on 49ers’ injury report ahead of a Week 18 game vs. Cardinals.

The San Francisco 49ers will finish the season the way they started it – banged up and missing a handful of star players.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel, quarterback Brock Purdy and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir are all listed as ‘out’ for the team’s Week 18 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.

Tight end George Kittle is also ‘questionable.’

It’s not a huge surprise the 49ers opted for maximum caution with player like Purdy and Lenoir since both figure to be key pieces in the team’s future beyond the 2024 campaign. The same may be true for Samuel, although his future in San Francisco is still uncertain.

For the 49ers, they can’t climb out of the cellar in the NFC West, so there isn’t much to play for in Sunday’s game. A win could drop them as far as No. 14 in the NFL draft. A loss would keep them at No. 11, which is where they’re slated to pick entering the final week of the regular season.

Why Joshua Dobbs was chosen as 49ers new starting QB

Why the 49ers made a change at QB with Brock Purdy out:

It looks like the San Francisco 49ers won’t have quarterback Brock Purdy for their season finale against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Week 18 will mark the second game Purdy has missed this season, but this time the starter in his stead will be different. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday announced Joshua Dobbs would get the start ahead of Brandon Allen, who has been Purdy’s backup for virtually the entire season.

According to Shanahan, the change from Allen to Dobbs has more to do with the personnel surrounding the QBs than either player’s performance. He confirmed the switch was because San Francisco is down so many offensive lineman, and Dobbs’ mobility gives the 49ers offense a better chance to be successful. Dobbs has 503 rushing yards and seven career rushing touchdowns, including a seven-yard TD scamper in Monday night’s loss to the Detroit Lions. Allen has 68 yards on 36 carries in his career.

Shanahan heaped praise on both signal callers though, giving an indication that one or both may be back in 2025.

“(Dobbs has) been great, him and Brandon,” said Shanahan. “They’ve been two good guys to have there. I’ve kind of looked at both of them as our two throughout the year. Kind of a little bit what I said in preseason. But they both have done really good looks on scout team, they split all the reps there. They’re always ready. They both prepare like they’re going to be a starter every week, so they’ve been great.”

If the 49ers can’t retain both Allen and Dobbs when they hit free agency in the offseason, Dobbs’ performance Sunday may determine how much San Francisco prioritizes bringing him back.

Undrafted rookie Tanner Mordecai is another other option if the 49ers don’t bring back one or both of Allen and Dobbs. While he wasn’t in the mix to be the starter Sunday because he hasn’t gotten enough reps behind the other two QBs, Shanahan said Mordecai has found other ways to make the most of his first NFL season.

“It’s always tough having four, just because of the reps,” said Shanahan. “So I mean, that’s kind of, (Minnesota Vikings QB) Nick Mullens his first year, I think he was the fourth and he got scout-team reps at safety until basically his first start. So that does happen. You’ve got to find ways to get the work in, but he’s taken advantage of his time here too.”

Dobbs performed well in his handful of snaps in Monday night’s loss after Purdy went down with a right elbow injury. If he puts together another strong outing behind a patchwork offensive line, he may quickly become San Francisco’s second-biggest offseason priority at QB behind Purdy and his contract extension.

49ers will try to reward breakout offensive star in Week 18 vs. Cardinals

1k-and-Jauan?

The San Francisco 49ers may not be aiming to rest players in Week 18 even with the postseason out of the picture, but they may not have a choice given some of their injury issues.

One player who should be healthy after not showing up on the practice participation report is wide receiver Jauan Jennings. Jennings has been the breakout star of the 2024 season for the 49ers, and now with one week to go he’s just 77 yards shy of his first-career 1,000-yard season.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday said he tries to keep milestones like that in mind for players, and will for Jennings on Sunday.

“Yeah, 77. I’ll keep that down. I’m sure Jauan will tell me too,” said Shanahan. “But yeah, you always want to do that stuff for guys, especially in a situation where you can think about it. It’s insulting to think about it just to the situation everyone, if you’re competing for a playoff spot or something like that, but always. I would love to help that out for guys. You’ve got to be somewhat careful of it.

“I remember last year watching the Rams trying to get (Los Angeles Rams WR) Puka (Nacua) the record, which I know they wanted to get him in and out. So we were doing everything we could to deny him the ball. I remember he came to the sidelines on like a one-yard gain and I told him, I was like, ‘yeah, (Los Angeles Rams head coach) Sean’s (McVay) going to have to play you to the end of this game because we’re not giving you your record. And he just laughed and I laughed at it. We’re not playing the next week, so I’d love to help guys do that out.”

Jennings is at 923 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 70 receptions.

To put his season and the potential for 1,000 yards into context, he entered the year with 78 receptions for 963 yards and seven touchdowns in 45 career games.

The 49ers badly needed a WR to step up this season with some of their injury issues, and Jennings delivered with a career year that proves he’s capable of being a go-to No. 1 or 2 receiver. Getting him to 1,000 yards would put a perfect exclamation point on his breakout campaign.

2025 NFL draft order: 49ers best and worst possible outcomes in Week 18

It’s NFL draft order time and the 49ers have a bunch of possible scenarios for where they pick in 2025.

With the playoffs no longer in the picture, we’ve set our sights on the 2025 NFL draft when trying to draw meaning from the NFL standings for the San Francisco 49ers.

Monday night’s loss ensured the 49ers stayed at the No. 11 pick with one week to go.

The No. 11 spot is the highest they’ll be able to climb. Ahead of them at No. 10 are the New Orleans Saints, but they’re one game worse than the 49ers. Even if San Francisco loses in Week 18 and New Orleans wins, the 49ers would hold the worse pick because of the strength of schedule tiebreaker. Higher strength of schedule gets a pick lower in the draft order. Since the 49ers have the highest projected full-season strength of schedule, they’ll lose the tiebreaker to any team.

Here’s what the draft order looks like after Week 17.

1. New England Patriots (3-13)
2. Tennessee Titans (3-13)
3. Cleveland Browns (3-13)
4. New York Giants (3-13)
5. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-12)
6. Carolina Panthers (4-12)
7. New York Jets (4-12)
8. Las Vegas Raiders (4-12)
9. Chicago Bears (4-12)
10. New Orleans Saints (5-11)
11. San Francisco 49ers (6-10)
12. Indianapolis Colts (7-9)
13. Dallas Cowboys (7-9)
14. Arizona Cardinals (7-9)
15. Miami Dolphins (8-8)
16. Cincinnati Bengals (8-8)
17. Atlanta Falcons (8-8)
18. Seattle Seahawks (9-7)

The good news is San Francisco won’t slide any further than No. 14 because of their 10 losses.

Here’s where they land based on Week 18 win/loss outcomes:

No. 11 pick

49ers lose to Cardinals

No. 12 pick

49ers beat Cardinals
Cowboys beat Commanders
Colts beat Jaguars

No. 13 pick

49ers beat Cardinals
Cowboys beat Commanders
Colts lose to Jaguars

OR

49ers beat Cardinals
Cowboys lose to Commanders
Colts beat/tie Jaguars

No. 14 pick

49ers beat Cardinals
Cowboys lose to Commanders
Colts lose to Jaguars

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the NFL scoreboard in Week 18.

Dallas and Indianapolis will both kick off in the 10:00am Pacific Time window. San Francisco and Arizona don’t kick off until 1:25pm Pacific Time.
