ESPN predicts 49ers to finish 2024 schedule strong

ESPN shared scored predictions for the 2024 season’s final three weeks and it shows the 49ers finishing the season strong.

The San Francisco 49ers have just three games left in their 2024 season.

Sitting with a 6-8 overall record and a 1-4 mark in NFC West games, San Francisco is all but eliminated from the NFL playoffs.

Still, the 49ers want to end the 2024 season with some pride and they have the opportunity to finish with a winning record if they win out.

With games left at Miami (6-8), versus Detroit (12-2) and at Arizona (7-7), San Francisco has the opportunity to end the season with some momentum and set the table for a return to prominence in 2025.

Using simulations from its Football Power Index, ESPN forecasted every remaining game in the NFL’s regular season, including how the 49ers’ final three games would play out.

ESPN’s simulation forecasts San Francisco to close its final three weeks strong. Here’s what the simulation produced for scores in the 49ers’ final three games of 2024:

  • Week 16: San Francisco 24, Miami 14
  • Week 17: Detroit 38, San Francisco 31
  • Week 18: San Francisco 19, Arizona 10

While these results wouldn’t have the 49ers finishing with a winning record, it does have San Francisco closing with two more wins and a one-score loss against the projected No. 1 seed in the NFC in Detroit.

Among some of the other notable projections from ESPN’s FPI, the simulation forecasts the Los Angeles Rams to top the Seattle Seahawks in the season’s final week, 16-7, and capture the NFC West crown.

ESPN’s FPI projects the full seeding in the NFC to play out as follows: Detroit is the No. 1 seed, Philadelphia No. 2, Tampa Bay No. 3, Los Angeles No. 4, Minnesota No. 5, Green Bay No. 6 and Washington No. 7.

In the AFC, ESPN’s FPI projects the Kansas City Chiefs to capture the No. 1 seed, though Buffalo would close to within one game of Kansas City after a Chiefs loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17.

The full AFC Playoff picture looks like this per ESPN’s FPI simulation: Kansas City is the No. 1 seed, Buffalo No. 2, Pittsburgh No. 3, Houston No. 4, Baltimore No. 5, the Los Angeles Chargers No. 6 and Denver No. 7.

Kickoff for San Francisco at Miami in Week 16 is set for 1:25 p.m PT and the game will air on CBS.

49ers have limited injury updates day after Week 5 loss

Some injury updates from Kyle Shanahan’s conference call Monday morning:

The San Francisco 49ers are up against it on the injury front following their Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Unfortunately, updates on in-game injuries were limited Monday morning. Head coach Kyle Shanahan typically speaks with reporters in a conference call Monday afternoon, but his call was pushed up to Monday morning with the truncated week thanks to the 49ers’ Thursday Night Football matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

Shanahan did confirm kicker Jake Moody is dealing with a high ankle sprain. It’s unclear exactly how much time he’ll miss. Moody got his ankle rolled up on late in the first half of Sunday’s game while trying to make a tackle on special teams.

Strong safety Talanoa Hufanga also exited the game with a wrist injury and was ruled out shortly after leaving for the locker room. Shanahan said any firm updates on Hufanga wouldn’t come until later Monday.

As for players who were out of Sunday’s contest, the short week may make it tough for them to return.

Linebacker Demetrius Flanningan-Fowles missed the game with a calf injury and is unlikely to suit up Thursday, per Shanahan.

Wide receivers Jacob Cowing (shoulder) and Chris Conley (oblique) are still day-to-day. Both players missed Sunday’s game.

Shanahan also said first-round pick Ricky Pearsall won’t have his practice window opened during the short week. He’s continuing his rehab after being shot in the chest the week before the season started.

Running back Christian McCaffrey will also continue ramping up his rehab.

Defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos, who was placed on IR Saturday, had knee surgery and will miss four-to-eight weeks. The club hoped he could get through the injury he suffered in the preseason without having a procedure, but there’s hope he’ll return this season.

49ers injury update: Jake Moody suffered high ankle injury vs. Cardinals

Kyle Shanahan revealed the 49ers kicker suffered an ankle injury against the Cardinals.

San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody was carted off the field and ruled out for the remainder of the game against the Arizona Cardinals. Moody was ruled out for the remainder of the game due to an ankle injury he suffered while attempting to make a tackle on kickoff coverage against the Cardinals.

Following the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Moody suffered a high ankle injury.

Via @49ers on Twitter:

Without Moody, punter Mitch Wishnowsky served as the 49ers kicker against the Cardinals. While Wishnowsky drilled his only field goal attempt, Shanahan opted to go for it on fourth down multiple times with Moody sidelined.

The 49ers will now have to prepare for the Seattle Seahawks on a short week for Thursday Night Football in Santa Clara for Week 6.

49ers injury update: SS Talanoa Hufanga ruled out vs. Cardinals

Talanoa Hufanga is OUT vs. the Cardinals.

The San Francisco 49ers have officially ruled out strong safety Talanoa Hufanga with a wrist injury he suffered early in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Hufanga is having a hard time staying on the field with a flurry of injuries that have come since he’s returned from last year’s ACL injury. He missed the first two games, but returned for Week 3 against the Rams.

In the lead up to Week 4 he turned his ankle in practice and had to miss the 49ers’ game against the Patriots.

Then in Week 5 he suffered a wrist injury early against the Cardinals and left to the locker room during the second quarter. The team ruled him out shortly after he went to the locker room.

Rookie Malik Mustapha took over for him at the strong safety spot.

49ers star WR has season high in yards after one catch vs. Cardinals

Brock Purdy hit Brandon Aiyuk for a 53-yard gain in the first quarter against the Cardinals in Week 5.

After an extending training camp holdout, Brandon Aiyuk’s 2024 campaign has got off to an uncharacteristically quiet start for the San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver.

However, it didn’t take long for Aiyuk to get rolling on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. In the first quarter against the Cardinals, Brock Purdy found Aiyuk for a 53-yard gain. The 53-yard connection between Purdy and Aiyuk gave the former Arizona State Sun Devil his highest receiver total of the season.

With only one catch for 53-yards, Aiyuk has a new season-high for the 2024 campaign. In the first four weeks, Aiyuk’s season-high was 48 yards.

Yet, Aiyuk wasn’t done with just one catch. Aiyuk finished the first quarter against the Cardinals with four receptions for 91 yards.

Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon heaps praise on 49ers rising superstar

The Cardinals head coach had praise for nearly every aspect of Brock Purdy’s game.

After securing a much-needed win over the New England Patriots, the San Francisco 49ers will have a chance to extend their winning ways in Week 5 when they welcome divisional opponent, the Arizona Cardinals to Santa Clara.

Prior to their matchup on Sunday, Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon had high praise for 49ers passer Brock Purdy. When speaking to members of the media on Wednesday, Gannon compared Purdy to a 13-year veteran quarterback. Gannon praised all of Purdy’s game, including the 49ers quarterback’s ability to extend plays with his mobility.

From where he’s started to where he is now, he looks like a 13-year vet. Playing at a super high level, plays fast, knows where to go with the ball. Makes plays, extends plays and I think that’s an overlooked part of his game. Sometimes he looks like Houdini back there. It’s hard to get him on the ground too. Not being a quote-unquote one of those guys you talk about as a mobile quarterback. He’s very mobile. He makes a lot of plays with his legs. He’s accurate. He’s an accurate passer. Decision making and accuracy — got it, check, check and then he can extend plays, check.

Via @Tdrake4sports on Twitter:

During the 49ers win over the Patriots, Purdy threw for 288 yards on 15-of-27 passing with a touchdown and an interception.

Last season against the Cardinals, Purdy had a four-touchdown performance against Gannon’s defense. Purdy notched 242 yards through the air with four touchdown passes in Arizona in Week 15.
