49ers injury news: Brock Purdy’s back won’t keep him from practicing

Brock Purdy is a full go for Wednesday’s practice after dealing with a back issue.

The San Francisco 49ers can breathe a small sigh of relief on the injury front heading into Week 4.

Quarterback Brock Purdy, who is dealing with back soreness that required an MRI following Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams, is slated to be a full participant in Wednesday’s practice according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. That puts Purdy on track to play against the New England Patriots.

It never seemed as though Purdy’s back injury was serious. Shanahan on Monday in a conference call told reporters he was hopeful Purdy would be good to practice by Wednesday.

However, despite the coach’s optimism, the 49ers’ injury luck this year made it hard to write off even something minor.

Purdy played very well in the 49ers’ defeat against the Rams. He completed 22-of-30 throws for 292 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran it 10 times for 41 yards which may explain some of the soreness with his back.

It’s worth keeping an eye on Purdy’s status throughout the week, but given the nature of the ailment and his full participation in Wednesday’s session, there’s every reason to believe he’ll suit up and be under center when the 49ers host the Patriots.

Kickoff from Levi’s Stadium is slated for 1:05pm Pacific Time.

49ers add familiar face on defensive line to practice squad

The 49ers added a player to their practice squad as the hunt for a Javon Hargrave replacement begins.

The San Francisco 49ers filled the empty spot on their practice squad on Wednesday.

Defensive lineman Shakel Brown is returning to San Francisco to join their practice squad a day after the club released veteran safety Tracy Walker III.

Brown was with the 49ers in camp and had a nice preseason. His return gives the team additional internal depth to help replace defensive tackle Javon Hargrave who is out for the season following a partial triceps tear in Week 3.

San Francisco added Brown in the offseason and he spent time with them in training camp and the preseason. He played 72 snaps across the 49ers’ three preseason contests. Brown was let go at final cuts.

He’s also been with the Tennessee Titans and has yet to make his NFL debut.

This signing gives the 49ers a trio of interior defensive linemen on their practice squad. Brown joins veteran T.Y. McGill and undrafted rookie Evan Anderson as potential Hargrave replacements.

It’ll be interesting to see how the 49ers manage that group. They may permanently elevate a player, but they could opt to rotate through them with standard practice squad elevations to see which player fits best on the defensive front.

Figuring out how to fill the void left by Hargrave is now atop the 49ers’ to-do list on defense, and now they have another internal option.

Brock Purdy day-to-day after leaving Week 3 with back soreness

Brock Purdy is dealing with back soreness after Sunday’s loss.

There aren’t many good ways to paint the San Francisco 49ers’ 27-24 defeat against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

To make matters worse, quarterback Brock Purdy was banged up during the game and suffered back soreness according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Purdy is considered day-to-day after his MRI came back clean. Shanahan said he’s hopeful Purdy will be able to practice Wednesday.

It’s not a huge surprise Purdy was a little sore after the contest. He ran it 10 times for 41 yards and threw 30 passes in the game. Back ailments are always alarming though so it makes sense they took the precaution of getting an MRI.

In a season that so far has been defined by their injury problems, losing Purdy for any amount of time would be a potential knockout blow. Especially on the heels of the news that defensive tackle Javon Hargrave will likely miss the rest of the year with a partially torn triceps.

San Francisco has already struggled at times to overcome injuries on offense. If they didn’t have Purdy it would be hard to paint a path to victory in any game that he missed, particularly given that running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel are already out.

We’ll keep a close eye on this throughout the week. The 49ers have a day off Tuesday before beginning Week 4 preparations Wednesday. That Wednesday practice will come with a participation report which will give us a better indication of what direction Purdy is trending.

49ers RB Christian McCaffrey seeks help with injury recovery in Germany

Well that’s interesting…

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is trying something different with the recovery process for his Achilles tendinitis.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday in a conference call confirmed that McCaffrey went to Germany over the weekend to see a specialist about helping with his Achilles process. Shanahan didn’t have any specifics about which doctor the reigning Offensive Player of the Year saw.

It’s unclear whether this was planned or borne out of necessity because of an unforeseen complication. However, it stands to reason that the trip across the Atlantic doesn’t bode well for a return in Week 6, which is the earliest McCaffrey would be able to come back after being placed on IR ahead of Week 2.

McCaffrey isn’t the first professional athlete to go overseas for help with injury recovery.

Then-Colts quarterback Peyton Manning went abroad for stem cell treatment on his neck in 2011. A story from ESPN indicates Manning wasn’t the only NFL player to seek out such treatment in other countries. Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant took multiple trips to Europe for knee treatment late in his career.

It’s not clear exactly what McCaffrey did during his visit, but it’s certainly notable that he went overseas for help.

The superstar RB first started dealing with his Achilles injury back in Week 17 of lasts season, and the ailment wound up forcing him to sit out Week 18. He ended up sitting most of training camp to try and get healthy, and it looked like he’d be ready to go for the season opener.

He wound up missing the season opener and then went on IR the next week – a sign that the recovery process wasn’t going how San Francisco hoped. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport also reported McCaffrey was likely to miss six or more weeks.

The 49ers are struggling without McCaffrey’s versatility in their backfield, and while their focus is on having him ready for the postseason, early signs this year show they may need him on the field just to get to the playoffs.

49ers injury news: Javon Hargrave likely out for season

Javon Hargrave is out for the season.

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t have any big injury news in the immediate aftermath of their Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but that changed Monday when head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on a conference call.

Shanahan said defensive tackle Javon Hargrave suffered a partially torn triceps in the loss. Immediately after the game the 49ers’ head coach said the club was hopeful it was just a contusion.

Hargrave had a terrific game against the Rams in Week 3, posting his first sack of the year and five pressures against a shaky LA offensive front.

Shanahan said the team may look externally for replacements, but the more likely replacements will come from the practice squad where T.Y. McGill and Evan Anderson are both available at defensive tackle. Defensive end Sam Okuayinonu may also be an option to rush from the inside. Shanahan indicated the club also believes some of its edge rushers can kick inside.

In some better interior DL injury news, Kalia Davis is an option to return soon according to Shanahan. He’s dealing with a knee injury he suffered during the preseason that required surgery. At the time of the injury the 49ers indicated it would be about a half-season absence for Davis. Shanahan said it’s unlikely he returns for Week 4, but it could be soon.

Hargrave signed with the 49ers last offseason. This year he posted one sack and had eight pressures through San Francisco’s first three games. The team is recommending surgery for Hargrave, which would end his season, though there’s a chance he might be able to return for the postseason.

49ers injury updates: Nick Bosa, Charvarius Ward IN vs. Rams

Some good injury news for the #49ers ahead of Week 3.

The San Francisco 49ers can breathe a small sigh of relief heading into their Week 3 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

Both defensive end Nick Bosa and cornerback Charvarius Ward are active. They were listed as questionable on the official injury report. Bosa is dealing with a rib injury he suffered in practice. He was limited Thursday and Friday.

Ward has knee and hamstring soreness that kept him out of Thursday’s practice. He was back in limited fashion Friday.

That All-Pro duo should be helpful for San Francisco against a beat up Rams squad without its top two receivers and their third different starting offensive line of the season.

Here’s who won’t suit up for the 49ers:

QB Josh Dobbs (Third QB)
WR Deebo Samuel (calf)
TE George Kittle (hamstring)
CB Darrell Luter Jr.
LB Tatum Bethune
OL Ben Bartch

Strong safety Talanoa Hufanga is officially active as expected. He was a full go in practice all week and not listed on the injury report.

The 49ers and Rams kick off at 1:25pm Pacific Time at SoFi Stadium.

49ers Week 3 injury report: 1 All-Pro out, 1 doubtful, 2 more questionable

The #49ers Week 3 injury report is out. Official updates on George Kittle, Nick Bosa and Charvarius Ward:

The San Francisco 49ers released their official Week 3 injury report following Friday’s practice and provided confirmation on the statuses of some of their ailing stars.

Here’s what the injury report looks like per head coach Kyle Shanahan:

Out

WR Deebo Samuel (calf)

Samuel was ruled out for Week 3 on Monday when Shanahan told reporters he’ll miss a couple weeks with a calf strain.

Doubtful

TE George Kittle (hamstring)

This is a brutal blow for the 49ers’ offense. Kittle was in line for a ton of targets due to Samuel and McCaffrey’s absences. The small silver lining is that the team hasn’t officially ruled him out, which means he could be on track to suit up in Week 4 after his hamstring injury cropped up in the middle of the week.

Questionable

DE Nick Bosa (rib)
CB Charvarius Ward (knee, hamstring)

Bosa and Ward were both surprise additions to the practice participation report on Thursday. Ward was out of Thursday’s session, but returned Friday. Defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen said the team held Ward out for precautionary reasons after he experienced soreness. Bosa was limited in Thursday’s session after a full practice on Wednesday. The 49ers will likely have an adequate replacement for Ward, it’s less likely they’ll have the depth to withstand a game without Bosa in their already struggling pass rush.

It may be showtime for 49ers rookie after recent injury news in secondary

Another injury may force a rookie into the 49ers’ starting lineup.

The rash of injuries that have plagued the 49ers’ offense have now trickled over to the defensive side.

In a bit of a surprise, All-Pro cornerback Charvarius Ward was held out of Thursday’s practice because of knee and hamstring injuries. He was a full participant in Wednesday’s session, indicating the pair of injuries are new.

Defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen told reporters in a press conference after Thursday’s practice that Ward has some soreness and that the team is trying to be smart with the veteran CB. However, an absence in the middle of the week typically doesn’t bode well for a player’s chances to play. We’ll get official word on Ward’s status Friday afternoon.

If Ward is unable to go, all signs point to rookie second-round pick Renardo Green getting the start as the 49ers’ nickel corner. Sorensen during his press conference had a glowing review of Green.

“He’s looked great,” Sorensen said. “He continually gets better. So we’ve got total confidence in Renardo. He’s very competitive, he’s always wanting to learn, he is learning. Just feel great about him.”

The 49ers turned to Green in a dime package with four cornerbacks on the field in Week 2 against the Vikings. It marked his first regular season action as a pro. He played just four snaps. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Green may be a part of their defensive plan moving forward following his brief playing time in Minnesota.

If Ward winds up missing Sunday’s game in Los Angeles, Deommodore Lenoir and Isaac Yiadom would likely be the starting outside CBs with Green stepping into the slot in nickel packages.

The 49ers and Rams kick off from SoFi Stadium at 1:25pm Pacific Time on Sunday.

49ers practice participation report crowded after good start to Week 3

Ummm … uh oh!

The San Francisco 49ers started off Week 3 on the right foot.

After absences and limited participations littered their first six practice participation reports, Wednesday’s report was relatively empty. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel was a non-participant as expected. Every other player was a full go to kick off Week 3’s practices.

With Thursday came disaster.

Samuel remained out, as expected. He’s dealing with a calf strain that will sideline him for a couple weeks. Joining him among non-participants were All-Pro tight end George Kittle and All-Pro cornerback Charvarius Ward.

All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa was also a surprise on the participation report. He was limited by a rib injury.

Here’s the full report:

Did not participate

WR Deebo Samuel (calf)
TE George Kittle (hamstring)

CB Charvarius Ward (knee, hamstring)

Neither Kittle nor Ward were on Wednesday’s report. There’s no info on when they got hurt or the severity of their ailments. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak with reporters Friday. The signs aren’t great for their availability Sunday, but their statuses won’t be known until Friday’s injury report.

Limited participation

DE Nick Bosa (ribs)

This isn’t great! It’s unclear when Bosa got hurt or what the nature of the ailment is. We’ll keep a close eye on his status in Friday’s session.

Full participation

SS Talanoa Hufanga (knee)
LB Dee Winters (ankle)

Hufanga got through his first full practice without any setbacks and was a full participant again Thursday. He remains on track to make his season debut in Week 3.

49ers injury update: 2 more All-Pros go down before Week 3

More injuries for the 49ers. Sheesh.

The San Francisco 49ers looked to be stabilizing on the injury front.

Christian McCaffrey is already on IR with Achilles tendinitis. Deebo Samuel has been ruled out for Weeks 3 and 4 with a calf injury. It looked like those would be their only injuries going into Week 3 after a relatively clean practice participation report on Wednesday.

Reporting from Thursday’s practice painted a different picture that indicates a couple more 49ers stars were hurt at some point between the end of Wednesday’s practice and the start of Thursday’s.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner was first to report cornerback Charvarius Ward and tight end George Kittle would both miss Thursday’s practice. Ward has hamstring and knee problems, while Kittle is nursing a hamstring issue.

Their absences Thursday put their status for Sunday in jeopardy, although nothing will be official until the team releases its injury report Friday.

If Ward can’t go we may see rookie CB Renardo Green get the start at nickel corner with Isaac Yiadom stepping in as a full-time outside CB for Ward.

No Kittle means the 49ers will be down three All-Pros on offense. The club figured to rely heavily on him while McCaffrey and Samuel were out. Now it appears Eric Saubert and Jake Tonges are in line for tight end snaps if Kittle is unable to play in Week 3.

The 49ers will visit the Rams on Sunday. Kickoff from SoFi Stadium is slated for 1:25pm Pacific Time.
