49ers may look for George Kittle replacement with 1st pick in NFL draft

The star tight recorded 104 receptions for 1,233 yards and 12 total touchdowns on his way to winning college football’s Mackey Award.

Early mock drafts have penned different defensive linemen, offensive linemen and defensive backs to the San Francisco 49ers in the first round. While it’s easy to see the holes on the 49ers roster on both the offensive and defensive line along with the secondary, is there a case for John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan to pursue an offensive playmaker with their first pick in the 2025 edition of the draft?

The first round is littered with blue-chip caliber prospects at multiple skill positions, headlined by players like Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillian, Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, Missouri’s Luther Burden and Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka.

While each of those players would add a spark to Shanahan’s offense, one player from the 2025 class could be too hard to pass on if he’s available when the 49ers are on the clock, regardless of position.

After a stellar season at Penn State, Tyler Warren emerged as the best tight end in the 2025 draft class. On his way to helping Penn State punch a ticket to the College Football Playoff, Warren exploded for 104 receptions for 1,233 yards and eight touchdown receptions. Warren added four rushing touchdowns for the Nittany Lions.

On his way to winning the John Mackey Award for the nation’s top tight end, Warren showed off a flurry of traits worthy of a top draft pick. At 6-foot-6, 257 lbs, Warren has a large catch radius with the ability to win contested catches with power. In the 2024 season, Warren earned a 93.3 receiving grade from Pro Football Focus.

Warren’s size and power transition well to the run game where his blocking holds up to his ability as a receiver.

Warren’s versatility and ability to line up at multiple positions on the field, including in the backfield at fullback, gives Shanahan another chess piece on the field. Warren could play alongside Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk as he becomes comfortable in the 49ers offense, while also playing outside as a receiver.

The Penn State tight end could potentially help extend Kittle’s prime, taking pressure off as blocker on the edges or as a target for Brock Purdy. The six-time Pro Bowler has missed eight games over his last four seasons. Warren’s addition to the tight end room would give the 49ers depth at the position that they’ve missed.

While there’s absolutely a case for the 49ers bring in a trench player like an offensive lineman or defensive lineman along with a player in the secondary, Warren’s skillset could be enough to catch the eye of Lynch and Shanahan.

49ers a perfect landing spot for one of NFL draft’s youngest players

On the way to earning All-SEC first team honors, the Texas A&M pass rusher recorded five sacks during his only season in College Station.

As the draft season begins to heat up, a new rookie edge rusher prospect opposite of Nick Bosa has been a fairly popular choice in multiple mock drafts with the No. 11 overall selection in the 2025 NFL draft,

Offensive line and defensive line have been popular candidates for the 49ers in mock drafts early in the offseason. In the latest mock draft from Pro Football Network, another standout pass-rushing prospect landed with the 49ers at No. 11.

At No. 11, Pro Football Network penned Texas A&M edge rusher Nic Scourton to the 49ers. According to Dalton Miller of PFN, Scourton’s plan as a pass rusher is “artwork.”

Via PFN:

Nic Scourton isn’t perfect, but nobody else in this class possesses his blend of technical prowess, bend, size, and power. He’s playing too heavy right now, but losing the unnecessary weight he’s currently carrying on his frame should only make him more dangerous as an arc rusher.

Scourton’s pass-rush plan is artwork, and the suddenness and fluidity he already plays with at 280 is terrifying. He’ll be one of the youngest players in the class while already possessing nuance far beyond his years.

Scourton’s naturally thick lower half makes him a sturdy edge setter, and there’s a chance he’ll continue growing into his frame while building a more consistent power element to his game.

Read the full PFN 7-round mock draft here.

Following two seasons at Purdue, including a career-best 10-sack season in 2023 for the Boilermakers, Scourton transferred to College Station in 2024. Scourton thrived in the SEC, recording five sacks to go along with 37 tackles and 14 tackles for loss in 12 games for the Aggies. Scourton earned All-SEC first-team honors before declaring for the 2025 NFL draft.

Scourton will just be turning 21 years old before the 2025 NFL season begins, giving the 49ers a young player with immense potential to develop across from Bosa in San Francisco’s pass rush.

The first round of the 2025 NFL draft will begin on Thursday, April 24 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

49ers use 1st-round pick on injured OT in 2025 mock draft

The 6-foot-5 offensive tackle suffered a knee injury during the Ohio State Buckeyes’ loss to the Oregon Ducks in October.

Following the divisional round of the postseason, the college football national championship game is slated for Monday night between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The national championship will have some of the top prospects in the upcoming NFL draft on display.

Before the national title game on Monday, Jeff Risdon of USA TODAY’s NFL Draft Wire released an updated mock draft with a prediction for the San Francisco 49ers’ selection in the first round.

After Texas star offensive tackle Kelvin Banks went off the board at No. 10 to the Chicago Bears, Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon inked another offensive tackle to the 49ers at No. 11. Risdon listed Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons. According to Risdon, the 22-year-old tackle might have the “highest ceilings” out of the offensive tackles in the 2025 draft class.

Via Draft Wire:

Simmons is currently injured, which simultaneously hinders his draft appeal but also makes him fit in with the 49ers, who have major injury and depth issues along both lines. He might have the highest ceiling of any offensive tackle in this class.

Read the full mock draft via USA TODAY’s SMG Draft Wire here.

After transferring from San Diego State, Simmons started 19 games for the Buckeyes over two seasons. Simmons suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Buckeys’ loss to the Oregon Ducks in October. Prior to his injury, Simmons didn’t allow a sack through six games at left tackle.

Via @PFF_College on Twitter:

The first round of the NFL draft is set for April 24 in Green Bay. The 49ers are slated for the No. 11 overall pick in the first round of the 2024 draft.

2025 mock draft: 49ers try to recreate success of 2 past drafts

It worked two times before…

The San Francisco 49ers need to rebuild their defensive line this offseason – a task they’ve been dealing with since trading defensive tackle DeForest Buckner in 2020.

They’ve had varying degrees of success in piecing together an effective group, but they’ve never been able to directly replace Buckner. Things got even more difficult in 2024 when they released veteran DT Arik Armstead.

A mock draft from Pro Football Network has the 49ers trying to find some defensive tackle help by going back to the well where they found Buckner and Armstead – the University of Oregon.

With the 11th overall pick, PFN sends Oregon DT Derrick Harmon to the 49ers where he could step in as a starter on Day 1.

Via PFN:

The comparisons to make between Harmon and former 49ers first-round pick DeForest Buckner are easy. Both are lengthy, athletic Oregon defensive tackles with quick hands and tremendous pass-rushing value along the interior. Though Buckner graded out slightly higher against the run for me coming out than Harmon does, it’s not inconceivable to think the latter can’t also reach Pro Bowl status at some point in his career.

Harmon spent his first three seasons at Michigan State before transferring to Oregon for his senior season.

The 6-5, 310 pound DT posted 55 pressures and five sacks during his final college season and received a very strong 79.4 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus. He actually graded out better against the run (81.1) as a junior at Michigan State.

While the 49ers certainly need run stoppers along the interior, finding a player to consistently push the pocket from the inside is imperative if they’re taking a defensive tackle this early.

If Harmon can step in and be as effective as Buckner or Armstead were at their best, it’s easy to see why he’d be an enticing choice for the 49ers with the 11th pick.

2025 mock draft: 49ers may be able to maximize talented edge rusher

New mock draft, new pass rusher for the 49ers.

There’s not a more important aspect of the San Francisco 49ers defense than their pass rush.

That unit struggled in the 2024 season, which didn’t help the struggles that led to the ouster of defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. Addressing that group has to be a priority in the 2025 NFL draft, and they do so in a new mock draft from the Draft Wire.

In that recent one-round mock, the 49ers select Texas A&M edge rusher Nic Scourton with the No. 11 overall pick.

Scourton is an intriguing prospect with good size and athleticism that should quickly translate to the NFL. He’s listed at 6-4, 280 pounds, but he moves laterally like a much smaller DE.

He spent his first two years at Purdue and led the Big 10 in sacks with 10.0 in the 2023 season as a sophomore. Scourton transferred to Texas A&M for the 2024 season and didn’t have as much success getting quarterbacks on the ground in the SEC, finishing with 5.0 sacks. Pro Football Focus had him down for an impressive 42 pressures in 263 pass rush snaps in 2023. That number dropped to 35 pressures in 318 pass rush snaps this season.

It’s easy to see why San Francisco would be intrigued with Scourton based on his tools as an edge rusher, but his size may afford him the versatility to kick inside and contribute as an interior pass rusher as well. If the 49ers think they can snag a pass rusher who can make an impact at two positions, it’s hard to imagine they’d pass on him with their first-round choice.

2025 mock draft: 49ers avoid temptation of superstar RB, help pass rush instead

The 49ers are in a good spot to land pass rush help … or Ashton Jeanty … in the 1st round of this year’s draft.

Running back is one position that won’t land particularly high on a list of San Francisco 49ers needs in the 2025 NFL draft.

However, Heisman Trophy finalist Ashton Jeanty may be an enticing option for the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan when it’s their turn to select this year in Green Bay.

He was there at No. 11 overall in a mock draft from Pro Football Focus, but the 49ers avoided the temptation and added Georgia edge rusher Jalon Walker to check off their top overall need.

Walker is a little undersized, but he has the tools to offer the kind of impact Dee Ford had for San Francisco in 2019 when he was healthy. The junior posted a career-high 6.5 sacks in 2024 after hanging up 5.0 in the 2023 season. He also racked up 19 tackles for loss.

Some of his peripheral numbers paint a better picture of his potential effect on the 49ers defensive line. Via PFF’s Trevor Sikkema:

The 49ers could use help in the trenches this offseason, and defense is the choice here due to it being the strong position in this year’s draft. Walker is listed as an off-ball linebacker, but he is at his best when rushing the passer as an edge. At 6-foot-2 and around 250 pounds, he’s a bit light on his measurables to be a full-time edge defender, but his 18.3% and 21.0% pass-rush win rates over the past two years are proof of his consistent disruption at that size. Walker is explosive and turns speed to power easily.

Various offensive and defensive tackles have been popular choices for the 49ers in early mock drafts, but a player like Walker better fits their organizational team-building philosophy.

They need some substantial additions to their pass rush to help Nick Bosa and establish the dominant front that is supposed to catalyze their defense. If they believe Walker is an edge defender who can consistently affect the opposing quarterback, it’s easy to see the 49ers putting his measurables aside and taking a swing on him at No. 11 overall.

49ers miss out on top 10 pick in 2025 NFL draft order

The 49ers landed a pick just outside the top 10 in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.

While the San Francisco 49ers chances of a spot in the playoffs have been decided for some time now, their loss in Week 18 to the Arizona Cardinals helped officially turn the page to the offseason.

With the regular season wrapped up, the 49ers now know when they’ll be scheduled to be on the clock in the first round of the 2025 edition of the NFL draft.

With their record at 6-11, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch will be on the clock just outside of the top 10 with the No. 11 overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. The No. 11 selection in the draft will be the highest pick the 49ers have received since selecting Trey Lance No. 3 overall in the 2021 draft.

The New Orleans Saints (No. 9) and Chicago Bears (No. 10) will be on the clock before the 49ers with the Dallas Cowboys (No. 12) and Miami Dolphins (No. 13) will follow. The 49ers will hold the highest pick in the NFC West with the Arizona Cardinals drafting at No. 16 and the Seattle Seahawks drafting at No. 18.

Here’s the 2025 NFL draft order for non-playoff teams:

1. Tennessee Titans (3-14)
2. Cleveland Browns (3-14)
3. New York Giants (3-14)
4. New England Patriots (4-13)
5. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-13)
6. Las Vegas Raiders (4-13)

14. Indianapolis Colts (8-9)
15. Atlanta Falcons (8-9)
16. Arizona Cardinals (8-9)
17. Cincinnati Bengals (9-8)

49ers add Ole Miss DT in mock draft by company supporting Jets GM search

Defensive line is a popular position for the 49ers to pick in mock drafts.

The defensive line has been a popular need for the San Francisco 49ers to fill in early mock drafts.

That’s the exact route they go in a mock draft done by the 33rd Team, the NFL technology and media company hired to support the New York Jets search for a general manager.

A couple of Michigan defensive tackles have been 49ers targets in recent mocks, but this time they go down to the SEC where they select Ole Miss defensive tackle Walter Nolen.

Nolen is listed at 6-3, 305 pounds and put together a couple of stellar years as both a run stopper and a pass rusher.

He spent his first two years at Texas A&M before transferring to Ole Miss for the 2024 campaign. During his second year at A&M he logged seven sacks on 16 pressures according to Pro Football Focus, but he really broke out this year with the Rebels. In 13 games he logged 34 pressures and six sacks, along with 31 run stops per PFF. The football analytics site also graded him out as an elite run defender.

Just one year of high-end production may give the 49ers pause if they aim for a defensive tackle in the first round. They need to hit on that pick and make sure the player is going to be productive right away. Perhaps Nolen’s ascension in 2024 is a sign that his trajectory will continue upward and he steps in Day 1 as an effective pass rusher and run stuffer. San Francisco will have to be absolutely sure that’s the case if this is the route they go in the 2025 draft.

Cowboys wild win over Buccaneers moves 49ers up 2025 NFL draft order

Sunday wasn’t all bad for the 49ers…

Week 16 wasn’t good for the San Francisco 49ers.

They were officially eliminated from the playoffs before their game against the Miami Dolphins even kicked off, and then they faceplanted against the Dolphins in an ugly 29-17 defeat.

On the other hand, with all eyes officially turned toward the 2025 season, we can immerse ourselves fully in the race for the best draft picks. In that regard, Sunday couldn’t have gone much better for San Francisco.

They entered the week holding on to the No. 15 overall pick, behind a slew of other 6-8 teams thanks to the strength of schedule tiebreaker that gave them the worst pick of those 6-8 clubs.

However, the Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts both won their games Sunday morning. Then the Dolphins beat the 49ers to move the 49ers further up the draft board.

Then the Dallas Cowboys swung an upset Sunday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a wild game where the Cowboys nearly smoked a nine-point lead with less than three minutes to go.

By defeating Tampa Bay 26-24, the Cowboys became the fourth of five 6-8 teams to win, moving the 49ers all the way up to No. 11 in the 2025 NFL draft, just behind the 5-9 New Orleans Saints who face the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

Here’s the updated draft order through Sunday night with projected full-season strength of schedule as the tiebreaker.

2025 NFL draft order

1. New York Giants (2-13)
2. New England Patriots (3-12)
3. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-12)
4. Tennessee Titans (3-12)
5. Cleveland Browns (3-12)
6. Las Vegas Raiders (3-12)
7. Carolina Panthers (4-11)
8. New York Jets (4-11)
9. Chicago Bears (4-11)
10. New Orleans Saints (5-9)
11. San Francisco 49ers (6-9)
12. Miami Dolphins (7-8)
13. Indianapolis Colts (7-8)
14. Cincinnati Bengals (7-8)
15. Dallas Cowboys (7-8)
16. Arizona Cardinals (7-8)
17. Seattle Seahawks (8-7)
18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-7)

49ers add massive, national champion, ‘freak’ defensive tackle in mock draft

The San Francisco 49ers list of needs in the 2025 draft is long, but it would make sense if they prioritized their defensive line.

Assessing exactly how the San Francisco 49ers will utilize their first-round pick in the 2025 draft is tough given some of the sweeping changes we may see to their roster in the offseason.

The trenches jump out as a priority no matter how the offseason goes given some of their struggles on both the offensive and defensive lines. A mock draft from the 33rd Team makes a safe assumption that the 49ers will look to retool a defensive front that was once the backbone of a great San Francisco defense.

At the No. 14 overall pick in that mock the 49ers walk out with Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant.

Grant is a ludicrous athlete at 6-3, 339 pounds, and over his three seasons at Michigan he’s racked up 41 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 10 (!) pass breakups. The pass breakups are a Michigan record for defensive linemen per the Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.

Feldman included Grant at No. 3 on his annual ‘Freaks List’ thanks to Grant’s rare combination of size and athleticism.

Here’s what Feldman wrote about Grant in the Athletic:

As a sophomore, he helped anchor the nation’s No. 1 defense for the national champion Wolverines, making 29 tackles, 5.0 for loss, with 3.5 sacks; six quarterback hurries, five pass breakups, one interception and one fumble recovery. When Grant arrived in Ann Arbor as a three-star recruit from Indiana, Jim Harbaugh raved about the then-360-pounder running a sub-5.0 40. Anyone doubting Grant’s speed (a max of 18.75 mph on the GPS) only needed to see him run down Penn State running back Kaytron Allen in the open field last year. His ability to fly up Michigan’s reactive plyo stairs test, a series of seven 26-inch-high stairs that players attempt to jump up as fast as possible, is truly freakish.

San Francisco’s defense needs disruptive players up front, and Grant has all the tools to be a force on the interior of an NFL defensive line. If he falls to wherever the 49ers wind up picking in next year’s draft it wouldn’t be a surprise if they viewed Grant as a future centerpiece of a reconstructed defensive line.
