One Badger is a ‘redshirt freshman we shouldn’t forget about’ this season

247Sports’ Chris Hummer put together a list of redshirt freshmen to keep an eye on this season and included in his group is Wisconsin

247Sports’ Chris Hummer put together a list of redshirt freshmen to keep an eye on in 2021 this morning and included in his list is Wisconsin offensive lineman Jack Nelson.

Nelson is lining up to start at right guard for the Badgers this year after seeing himself included on the team’s two-deep depth chart all of last season.

Here’s what Hummer had to say about the former four-star recruit:

Nelson has put on nearly 25 pounds since arriving in Madison, checking in this spring at 6-foot-7, 297 pounds. He’s got a new position, too. Nelson slid inside to guard this spring as Wisconsin attempted to get its five best linemen on the field. Now, Nelson is a redshirt freshman in what projects as otherwise an all-senior starting offensive line. Nelson won’t likely be a guard long term. There’s a reason why 247Sports rated the Stoughton, Wisconsin native a five-star recruit. But for now, he projects as a rare underclassman lineman to crack the Badgers’ starting five.

Three-star outside linebacker Jared Badie of Oswego, Ill. is going to take an official visit to Michigan State, according to Jason Killop of Rivals.

Killop reported on Monday morning that Badie has “locked” in an official visit to Michigan State for the last weekend in June. Badie reportedly also has official visits planned with Illinois, Minnesota and Texas Tech.

Badie — who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 202 pounds — is ranked as the No. 14 prospect in Illinois and No. 47 outside linebacker nationally by Rivals.

Badie currently holds scholarship offers from 15 programs, including Michigan State, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Indiana, Arizona State, Iowa State, Nebraska, Purdue, Louisville and Tennessee.

The Spartans offered Badie just last month so this is great to see Michigan State is already making an impact by locking in an official visit. Keep an eye on this prospect and if the Spartans can beat out a number of fellow power five schools for Badie.

Where Oklahoma ranks in 247Sports post-spring top 25 rankings, Alabama No. 1

A look at where 247Sports ranked the Oklahoma Sooners in their post-spring rankings.

We have reached the point in the offseason where way too early mock drafts and power rankings are the themes of the day. Recently, the Oklahoma Sooners were named the No. 1 team in the country by ESPN. However, 247Sports top analysts voted on their post-spring rankings. Instead of the Sooners coming in at No. 1, it was the Alabama Crimson Tide. The defending national champions are definitely worthy of the rankings but the Sooners are looking to gain ground.

What 247Sports Says…

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Sooners were the only team in three versions of the 247Sports poll to receive a first-place vote. Alabama, however, took a unanimous No. 1 spot after National Signing Day, and remains up top after the spring. For Oklahoma, spring and the offseason brought plenty of excitement to Norman. The Sooners added multiple key talents via the transfer portal, and the hype around Spencer Rattler is as strong as ever heading into his second full season as the starter. Rattler threw for 3,031 yards, 28 touchdowns and seven picks last season, and is among the 2021 leaders to win the Heisman Trophy. Can he follow names like Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts by leading OU to the College Football Playoff?

Note: Ballots were submitted prior to the confirmation of Trejan Bridges and Seth McGowan dismissals

As seen time and time again with these rankings, the Iowa State Cyclones are consistently inside the top 10. They land at No. 6 sandwiched between the Georgia Bulldogs and North Carolina Tar Heels. The Sooners most-bitter rivals the Texas Longhorns come in at No. 19 and Oklahoma State barely made the cut at No. 25. No other Big 12 school received any votes.

Notre Dame gives offer to quarterback recruit Malachi Nelson

Another quarterback target for the Irish.

While Notre Dame tries to figure out its current quarterback situation, it hasn’t stopped trying to plan for the one down the road. It particularly would prefer that its latest quarterback target prevent any discussion about who should play the position during his time in South Bend. That target is Malachi Nelson, a pro-style quarterback from Los Alamitos, California. He received an offer after a discussion with Tommy Rees:

Notre Dame is the 26th school to make an offer to Nelson. However, both Rivals and 247Sports are convinced that Nelson is headed to Oklahoma, so the question is whether the Irish emerged too late in the game to have a legitimate shot at him. Other contenders for Nelson include Florida State, Miami, Florida, Texas, Ohio State, Arizona State, Arizona, NC State, USC, Michigan, Alabama and Penn State. With this analysis from 247Sports’ Greg Biggins, it’s not hard to see why so many programs are after him:

“Nelson has all the physical tools you could want in a next level signal caller. At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, he has an athletic body with plenty of room to grow pack on good weight. He’s a very fluid athlete in everything he does. He has a smooth, effortless release and the ball jumps out of his hand. He has a downfield arm, is accurate to all three levels of the field and can throw with touch and change speeds. He’s a mature quarterback and already shows a high football IQ in terms of his decision making and how well he processes the position. He’s a plus-athlete for a quarterback as well and shows the ability to extend plays and get out and pick up yards in the running game. He made a big jump this off-season and needs to show he can put it together with the pads on as a sophomore but no quarterback in the class has a higher ceiling right now then Nelson.”

Duffus currently isn’t ranked by 247Sports but I’m guessing that’ll change soon based on the number of big-time schools showing interest. Duffus has already received scholarship offers from Michigan State, Florida, Oregon, Maryland, Miami and Penn State.

Michigan State is continuing to remain active in the transfer portal, and could be landing a former top wide receiver prospect leaving Ohio State.

Jameson Williams — a former four-star wide receiver and Ohio State Buckeye — revealed his finalists for where he’ll be transferring this offseason and Michigan State is still in the mix. The Spartans are joined by Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Florida, USC and Michigan.

A decision from Williams is expected to come very soon, according to Allen Trieu of 247Sports.

Williams — originally from St. Louis — was ranked as the No. 13 wide receiver and No. 82 overall prospect in the 2019 class by 247Sports.

William had 15 receptions for 266 yards and three touchdowns in the two seasons he played at Ohio State. That included three receptions for 62 yards and one touchdown in this year’s College Football Playoff semifinal win over Clemson.

Trieu has the full story on Williams and where he might end up. Click here to read more on Williams and if the Spartans will land yet another big-time transfer.

Michigan State offers 2022 OT Alessandro Lorenzetti of Montreal

Michigan State is extending their recruiting efforts internationally with their latest offer going to an offensive tackle prospect from Montreal.

Alessandro Lorenzetti of Montreal, Quebec announced on Tuesday that he has received a scholarship offer from the Spartans. Offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic extended the offer, according to Lorenzetti’s tweet.

Lorenzetti is unranked by 247Sports but that could in large part be due to the fact that he plays north of border and doesn’t get the same attention as other recruits. Lorenzetti is listed at 6-foot-4 and 285 pounds, and is a member of the 2022 class.

With the offer from the Spartans, Lorenzetti now has received scholarship offers from eight schools. Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Eastern Michigan, FIU, UMass and Toledo have also issued a scholarship offer to Lorenzetti.
