Paul Finebaum thinks a 2024 Georgia game will be ‘game of the year’

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum thinks that the Georgia at Alabama game in 2024 will be the game of the year.

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum thinks that the Georgia at Alabama game in 2024 will be the game of the year. Finebaum declared this on the SEC Network.

This is not too bold of a take when you consider that Georgia and Alabama have met in national championship games twice during the College Football Playoff era.

However, there are a lot of great games on the 2024 SEC regular season schedule. Georgia travels to Texas. Alabama plays at Oklahoma. Texas renews its rivalry on the road at Texas A&M. LSU hosts Alabama. 2024 is going to be fun!

NFL draft scouts will certainly mark the 2024 Georgia-Alabama game down on their calendar. Georgia and Alabama both had 10 players drafted in the 2023 NFL draft, which was the most of any college football program.

Georgia fans aren’t two happy that the Bulldogs have to play at Alabama for the second straight time in the regular season. Georgia last played the Crimson Tide, during the regular season, in 2020.

Overall, the SEC did a good job of ensuring most of the conference would have a balanced schedule in 2024. The CFP is expanding to 12 teams in 2024, so a conference loss (or two) may not spell the end of the season as it has in previous seasons.

Here’s everything Paul Finebaum had to say about Georgia’s 2024 game at Alabama:

Oklahoma Sooners all-time record vs. opponents on 2024 SEC schedule

A look at Oklahoma’s all-time record against the eight teams they’ll face in the SEC in 2024.

The 2024 season will be one of the more anticipated ones in college football history: The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns move to the SEC, and the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins take their talents to the Big Ten.

All of that is happening in the same year that the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams, creating even more intrigue and anticipation. Teams that would be out of the hunt entering November will have something to play for down the stretch.

2024 is going to be bonkers, and we’re here for it.

Though it’s still a ways out, let’s take a look at Oklahoma’s all-time head-to-head record against the eight opponents they’ll play in their inaugural season in 2024.

Oklahoma highlights USA TODAY Sports’ list of best games in the SEC in 2024

Oklahoma highlights USA Today’s list of best games in the SEC in 2024.

With the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns moving to the SEC next year, we just got our first look at what that looks like with the SEC opponents reveal for 2024.

The SEC did the Sooners zero favors when it comes their schedule. This rings out in USA Today’s list of the Top 10 SEC games for the 2024 season by Jace Evans.

Evans includes the five different matchups including the Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoma is going into a buzzsaw in the SEC, at least on paper.

Evans introduces the list by talking about a key scheduling quirk in the new SEC. There are no more divisions, and because of that, the matchups can get even more interesting.

The SEC has released the schedule for the 2024 football season … mostly. Specific dates and times have yet to be nailed down, but we have the most important thing: The matchups and the locations.

And there’s a lot to take in on that front considering the SEC is gaining two new members in 2024 in Oklahoma and Texas, two true college football blue bloods. Their maiden voyage in an SEC that is also doing away with divisions creates a number of interesting games between powers that just haven’t clashed all that much, or at least not recently. But there’s plenty of other great matchups on the schedule between traditional SEC powers, too. – Evans, USA TODAY Sports

Here’s a look at the five matchups featuring Oklahoma that Evans believes are top 10 games in 2024.

Projecting how Oklahoma and Texas will fare in the SEC

Colin Cowherd appears to like Texas better than Oklahoma in its new conference.

One national sports talk show host has concerns over the future for the Oklahoma Sooners. He’s making those doubts known following the SEC’s 2024 schedule release.

Colin Cowherd said the following of the Sooners on his show on Thursday.

“Keep your eye on Oklahoma. Are they going to be the second program in our adult life that disappears?”

Cowherd is comparing Oklahoma to its former longtime rival, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The powerhouse of the 1970s and 1990s won five national titles over the two decades. Today’s recruits are more familiar with the Nebraska that wins four or five games over a season than that team.

Moving to the Big 12 over time effectively ended the Cornhuskers dynasty. Switching to the Big Ten compounded the Huskers’ issues. Cowherd fears this move could do the same to the Sooners.

In reality, Oklahoma has more brand power than Nebraska. The program’s proximity to the state of Texas in recruiting alone could keep it afloat. In addition, the Sooners will have multiple program-sustaining rivalries in their new conference.

Oklahoma and Texas should fare better than Texas A&M, the third corner of a Lone Star State recruiting triangle. Assuming they have the right coaches, each team should be a consistent eight-game winner.

While Oklahoma should be fine over time, the immediate future for the Sooners in the SEC isn’t as bright. The team will take on Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Texas, Auburn and Ole Miss in its inaugural season in the league. Splitting those games with a 3-3 record would be impressive.

Oklahoma should settle into the top third of the conference. The real question is, will Brent Venables still be the head coach when it gets there?

SEC missed an opportunity with Oklahoma’s 2024 opponents

Oklahoma’s SEC schedule is going to be a lot of fun in 2024, but the conference missed an opportunity leaving off a potential rivalry in the making.

An opportunity to capitalize on a regional rivalry that’s just itching to take off was sitting right there for the SEC commissioner and the conference schedule makers.

Fayetteville, Arkansas, is roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes away from Norman, Oklahoma. Arkansas is the closest SEC school to the Sooners by two hours. Arkansas‘ next closest matchup is the Missouri Tigers, a little more than an hour further from Norman.

Additionally, Fayetteville is just over two hours from Tulsa. Given its proximity to the border, the home of the Hogs is a stone’s throw from the Sooner State.

Managing to figure out an eight-game conference schedule with 16 SEC teams is no easy task. Yet, the simplest answer for the conference would have been to have Oklahoma and Arkansas meet in Fayetteville instead of the programs traveling to Auburn, Alabama, or Oxford, Mississippi.

Despite their proximity, the Sooners and the Razorbacks have met on the gridiron on only 15 occasions. The last was a 10-3 win for the Sooners in the Cotton Bowl at the end of the 2001 season. The last time the Razorbacks made the trip to Norman was back in 1926. Oklahoma hasn’t made the jaunt east to Fayetteville since 1919.

It’s a game that would generate a ton of local buzz for both states and provide a boon to the local economies. With the Sooners moving to the SEC and the future of Bedlam in doubt, a regional matchup like Oklahoma-Arkansas could be a rivalry in the making.

The Sooners and the Razorbacks will get their date to host one another down the road. However, the SEC should have broken the seal on the border war in 2024. Especially given the recent game between Arkansas and Texas. Sure, they’re old Southwest Conference rivals, but there’s no reason Oklahoma and Arkansas can’t create something similar. With the close proximity and the overlapping nature of the fan bases, the SEC had a chance to create a game on the conference schedule that just means more.

Head-to-head records for Texas against every 2024 SEC opponent

Texas has done well historically against its 2024 SEC opponents.

The first conference schedule of the expanded SEC is official minus dates and times. We now know who Texas, Oklahoma and the rest of the league will face in 2024.

The Oklahoma Sooners got the tougher draw of the two teams. That seems reasonable given the Sooners’ uninspiring non-conference slate. Head coach Brent Venables and company are set to host Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina, with road trips to LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn and Big Eight rival Missouri.

Texas got a more manageable schedule than we anticipated after early schedule leaks. After a non-conference road battle with Michigan, the Longhorns are set to play Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Mississippi State at home, with road games at Arkansas, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.

Michigan and Georgia stand as likely losses, but there’s an opportunity for a 10-win season should the Longhorns continue to develop their offensive talent.

Here’s a look at Texas’ all-time record against every 2024 SEC opponent.

Twitter reacts to Oklahoma Sooners’ SEC opponents for 2024

The Oklahoma Sooners learned who their 2024 SEC opponents would be and here’s how Twitter reacted.

The Oklahoma Sooners have a slate of SEC opponents for the 2024 season. Though still more than a year away, the conference move just got real.

Part of the move to the SEC was to see a schedule packed with marquee matchups. Greg Sankey and his schedule makers hit it out of the park.

There are no gimmes on the schedule. There are some incredible matchups coming to Norman, and Oklahoma’s road slate looks incredible.

The Sooners welcome Nick Saban, Josh Heupel and Shane Beamer to Norman. They’ll go on the road to Auburn, Baton Rouge, Columbia and Oxford.

Oklahoma renews a rivalry with Missouri that is 96 games strong. Though it may not be the Red River Showdown or Bedlam, it’s a game with history. On the flip side, the Sooners will break the ice with South Carolina, welcoming the Gamecocks to Norman for the first matchup between the two schools.

This is what the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns were looking for when they opted to move to the SEC. Big-time matchups on a week-to-week basis that will keep the college football world buzzing.

Will it be easy? Absolutely not. But it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Twitter was buzzing with the announcement, and here are some of the best reactions.

First look at the Oklahoma Sooners SEC opponents in 2024

The Oklahoma Sooners received their opponents for their inaugural season in the SEC in 2024.

After anticipation so thick you could cut it with a knife, Oklahoma’s opponents have been revealed for their inaugural season in the SEC.

Oklahoma completes its move to the SEC next summer, but that will not stop fans of the Crimson and Cream from salivating at the matchups the Sooners will face in their first season as SEC members.

In a schedule reveal show, Oklahoma and Texas were the first to know their opponents — fitting that the new kids on the block were thrown into the fire early.

We have taken the liberty of mapping Oklahoma’s 2024 schedule with the scheduled nonconference games locked in.

In case anyone needed a reminder, along with eight conference games, each SEC team is required to play one opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 or a major independent during the 2024 season when the SEC becomes a 16-team conference.

As it stands, Oklahoma doesn’t have a Power Five team on the 2024 schedule. So, that will be the final piece to make its first year in the SEC complete.

Here’s a look at Oklahoma’s SEC opponents in their first season in the SEC.

Oklahoma expected to host Alabama in 2024 per ESPN report

With the 2024 SEC schedule set to be released, ESPN’s Chris Low is reporting the Oklahoma Sooners will host the Alabama Crimson Tide.

A new era of college football is set to be revealed during a special on the SEC Network Wednesday night at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network. The show will air from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

We knew Texas will be on the schedule on an annual basis. However, a report from Chris Low of ESPN gives us the second opponent on the eight-game conference schedule for the Sooners.

According to Low’s report, the Sooners will play host to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2024 season.

All 14 existing SEC schools will play either Oklahoma or Texas in 2024, with sources telling ESPN that Georgia will visit Texas and Alabama will travel to face Oklahoma. – Low, ESPN

The SEC is expected to schedule each of their 14 members against Oklahoma or Texas during the 2024 season, which will create a great many interesting matchups throughout the schedule.

Alabama hasn’t made the trip to Norman since 2002, a 37-27 win for the Oklahoma Sooners. OU holds a slight edge in the all-time series, 3-2-1.

The Crimson Tide won the first matchup in the series, 17-0, in the Orange Bowl to end the 1962 season. Alabama’s win in the 2018 College Football Playoff was its first over the Sooners since that 1962 matchup.

Now with Oklahoma joining the SEC, the two teams will become much more familiar with each other, playing twice in a four-year span.

We’re still waiting to find out when the two sides will play during the season, but whichever Saturday the matchup falls, it will create an incredible buzz in Norman.
