Atlanta selected Sears in the seventh round, becoming the fourth seventh-round selection in Nebraska history. Sears is now the fifth Husker pitcher under head coach Will Bolt to be drafted in the first 10 roundten, joining Spencer Schwellenbach, Cade Povich, Emmett Olson, and Jace Kaminska.

The senior is the sixth Husker to be selected by the Braves in the draft. Sears earned All-American and Academic All-American in the 2024 season, the first Nebraska player in the same season since Aaron Marsden in 2003.

He was also named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and a First-Team All-Big Ten selection, posting a 9-1 record with a 2.16 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 104 innings. He finished among the national leaders throughout the season, ranking fourth with a 0.88 WHIP, fifth in ERA (2.16), 19th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.32), and 20th in hits allowed/9 inn. (6.23).

Sears is the first Husker to throw 100-plus strikeouts in a season since 2008, and his 101 strikeouts placed him ninth in program history. His 104 innings pitching also finished him tied for eighth in program history.

A former Nebraska baseball player was taken in the MLB draft on Monday afternoon. The Seattle Mariners, with the 121st overall in the 2024 MLB Draft, selected catcher Josh Caron in the fourth round.

Caron is the seventh Husker in school history to be picked in the fourth round. He is the second highest-taken catcher in school behind Bill McGuire, who was taken in the 1985 draft with the 27th overall pick.

Caron also helped continue Nebraska’s streak. They have had at least one draft selection in 30 of the last 31 drafts since 1992, outside the shortened draft in 2020 due to COVID-19. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, is the tenth Husker to be selected by the Seattle Mariners in the draft.

Caron put together a stellar junior year for Nebraska, finishing with a .308 batting average, 16 home runs, and 65 RBIs. He was one of only two catchers to exceed .300, 15-plus home runs, and 65 RBIs this season.

During Nebraska’s championship run in the Big Ten Tournament, Caron delivered six home runs, setting a new tournament record. He also set the Big Ten Tournament total bases record with 28.

Sears joined the Huskers after playing two seasons at Western Illinois and one year at Iowa Central Community College. He is the first Husker baseball player to be an Academic All-American since 2016. He is the first Nebraska player to be an All-American and Academic All-American in the same season since Aaron Marsden in 2003.

The Westphalia, Iowa, native is the 19th player in program history to be named an Academic All-American, increasing Nebraska’s total to 22 all-time. Sears finished the year with a 3.65 cumulative GPA while earning a degree in child, youth, and family studies.

The Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten honoree posted a 9-1 record with a 2.16 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 104 innings this season. The Nebraska baseball team landed a new addition to its 2025 roster. South Dakota State outfielder Cael Frost announced he committed to Nebraska. Frost joins the Huskers after spending one season with the Jackrabbits.

Before playing at South Dakota State, Frost spent two years at Kirkwood Community College. In his two seasons at Kirkwood, Frost hit .379 and hit ten home runs and 18 doubles in his freshmen year. In his sophomore season, Frost delivered 12 home runs, 17 doubles, and a triple with 55 RBIs, earning all-region honors

He then transferred to South Dakota State for his junior season and played in all 49 games for the Jackrabbits. SDSU finished the season 20-29 with Frost standing as its main highlight.

He earned Summit League Player of the Year, becoming the first South Dakota State baseball player to receive the award. Frost earned the award after his stellar season at the plate. He finished the season with a .343 batting average, 68 hits, 59 RBIs, a school-record 21 home runs and 16 doubles.

He now joins the Huskers, who finished the season with a 40-22 record and an early exit in the 2024 NCAA Regionals. Frost will have one season left of eligibility.

The Nebraska baseball team entered Saturday afternoon facing elimination in the NCAA Regional. The Huskers clashed against Niagara in Saturday’s showdown and, following a rough start, bounced back to survive, winning 7-5.

The Purple Eagles took off in the first inning, scoring three runs off the opening five pitches before earning another run in the second. But Nebraska responded, outscoring Niagara 7-1 through the following five innings. Mason McConnaughey earned the win on the mound, throwing for 6.0 innings and facing 28 batters.

McConnaughey coughed up five hits and five runs but delivered 10 strikeouts on the day. Jalen Worthley pitched the final three innings and earned the save. Worthley stood against 11 batters and allowed two hits while throwing two strikeouts.

Nebraska delivered eight hits and earned six RBIs and three home runs. Gabe Swansen and Case Sanderson led the way for the Huskers in the batter’s box. Swansen slammed two solo home runs on the afternoon, bringing him up to six total home runs in the postseason. Sanderson drove in four RBIs, the majority coming off a three-run home run in the third.

The Huskers earned their 40th win of the season, their first 40-win season since 2014. Nebraska moves on to the second elimination game and will await the loser between Florida and Oklahoma State on Sunday.

The Huskers are in the Stillwater Regional along with Florida, No. 11 Oklahoma State, and Niagara. Nebraska punched its ticket to the tournament following its first Big Ten Tournament Championship and is entering with a 39-20 record.

The championship win is the Huskers’ first tournament win as a member of the Big Ten Conference after winning the conference regular season in 2021.

Tournament MVP Josh Caron launched six home runs across the Big Ten Tournament, the most home runs in a single Big Ten Tournament. Caron also set the total bases record in the tournament with 28.

Nebraska even set a Big Ten Tournament record with 17 doubles in six games. The Huskers’ pitching staff recorded 56 strikeouts over six games in the tournament.

Nebraska opens the regional against Florida on Friday. This is the second meeting between the Huskers and Gators on the diamond. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. The Gators enter the tournament with 28-27 following a first-round knockout in the SEC Tournament.

Niagara is 38-15 on the season and punched its ticket in with a MAAC Championship win. Oklahoma State, which won the Big 12 Championship, plays host in the Regional.

The Nebraska baseball started the post-season at the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha on Tuesday night. Rain and flooding delayed the No. 2 Huskers’ opening-round showdown with No. 7 Ohio State by six hours. However, the delay paled in comparison as Nebraska fell in a devasting 15-2 seven-inning loss.

The Buckeyes delivered 15 hits for 15 RBIs on the night, most of which occurred in the fourth. Ohio State nailed seven hits for eight RBIs to go from a 3-0 lead to an 11-0 one. In the loss, Nebraska sent five pitchers to the mound, which tallied up just ten strikeouts, five groundouts, and four flyouts across 42 batters.

The Buckeyes meanwhile put three pitchers on the mound and threw 11 strikeouts while surrendering just four hits and two runs. Josh Caron delivered one of the Huskers’ RBIs, nailing a solo home run in the fourth. Dylan Carey added to Nebraska’s score by earning an RBI single in the sixth.

But Ohio State’s surge ended up being the Huskers’ downfall. They now must fight to stay alive in the Big Ten Tournament. Nebraska will continue action against Purdue on Wednesday night.

The winner will advance to face the loser of Indiana v. Ohio State on Friday night. The first pitch between Nebraska and Purdue is set for 7 p.m. and can be viewed on the Big Ten Network.

The Nebraska baseball team is set to begin the postseason at the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha on Tuesday. The Huskers finished the regular season with a 16-8 conference record, giving them the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

Nebraska will face No. 7 Ohio State on Tuesday, May 21 at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to take on the winner of No. 3 Indiana and No. 6 Purdue on Thursday, May 23, at 2 p.m., while the losers face off in an elimination game on Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m.

The Huskers have a 34-19 overall record but enter the tournament with a 7-4 record in May after going 7-10 in April. Ohio State has a 28-24 overall record and a 12-12 conference record. The Buckeyes finished 7-4 in May and 9-8 in April.

Nebraska won two of their three clashes with the Buckeyes in early April, outscoring them 13-12 across the three meetings.

The Huskers as a team also stand with a batting average of .292 on the season. Josh Caron leads the team in hits (64) and RBIs (54). Caron also leads Nebraska in home runs with 10. Case Sanderson holds the Huskers’ best batting average of the season, entering the postseason with a .373.

On the mound, the team ERA is 4.37, allowing a batting average of .246. Brett Sears and Mason McConnaughey lead the Huskers. Sears stands with an 8-0 record through 92.0 innings pitched.

Sears’ ERA is 2.05, and he has 87 strikeouts and 60 hits. McConnaughey has a 7-3 record through 61.0 innings pitched. He has 70 strikeouts and 55 hits.

The Nebraska baseball team concluded the regular season Saturday morning with a conference game against Michigan State. The Huskers entered the day with a chance to win a share of the regular season Big Ten Title.

Nebraska finished the day with 11 hits and five RBIs, leaving nine runners on base. Michigan State delivered 14 hits for nine RBIs but also left nine runners on base. The Spartans also scored off two throwing errors by Nebraska.

The Huskers fell behind early, trailing 6-0 through four innings, another hole they failed to climb out of. Dylan Carey drove in a two-RBI double for Nebraska in the sixth, putting it on the board.

Gabe Swansen followed shortly after with a sacrificial RBI, his first RBI in over a month. Tyler Stone also hit a sacrificial RBI in the seventh, which occurred after Case Sanderson delivered an RBI single. Sanderson also led the Huskers in hits with three.

Nebraska concludes the regular season 34-19 and conference play 16-8. The Huskers hold the No. 2 seed heading into the Big Ten Tournament, which begins Tuesday.

Nebraska wins series over Indiana in 4-2 Sunday victory

The Huskers move to 32-18 on the season and 14-7 in the Big Ten Conference.

The Huskers concluded their final home game of the regular season Sunday with a showdown against Indiana. Nebraska defeated the Hoosiers in another battle that went down to the wire, taking the series 2-1 and staying alive in the Big Ten race.

The Huskers scored four runs off eight hits and earned three RBIs, while Indiana totaled two runs off six hits and three errors. Case Sanderson led Nebraska at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in the third. Sanderson scored himself in the same inning off a wild pitch, giving Nebraska a 2-0 lead.

Cole Evans and Josh Caron delivered RBIs as well. Evans doubled in the sixth to bring Caron home and break the 2-2 tie. Caron then extended the lead to 4-2 in the seventh with an RBI single.

Jackson Brockett started for Nebraska and pitched 5.0 innings, earning three strikeouts and allowing just two runs across four hits. Drew Christo pitched the final four innings to earn the win, shutting out Indiana by throwing two strikeouts and surrendering just two singles.

The Huskers move to 32-18 on the season and 14-7 in the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska will conclude the regular season with a three-game series against Michigan State. Game one is set for Thursday night at 5:05 p.m. and can be viewed on B1G+.
