The Nebraska men’s basketball team traveled out to Indiana for a Big Ten showdown against the Hoosiers. The Huskers last won a road game in mid-December when they defeated Kansas State. The six-game road losing streak ended against Indiana for Nebraska with an 85-70 win.

The Huskers dominated the Hoosiers throughout the night, even ending the first half up 51-31. Though Indiana attempted a comeback, Nebraska never let the Hoosiers get close enough to take control of the game. The Huskers delivered big from beyond the arc, finishing the night by going 14-of-33 in three-point shooting.

Keisei Tominaga and Jamarques Lawrence served up most of the three-pointers. Tominaga shot four-of-nine from beyond the arc to finish the game with 20 points, leading the team in scoring. Lawrence went a perfect five-of-five from beyond the arc, wrapping up the night with 19 points.

The Huskers entered 2024 with a home game against conference opponent Indiana. Nebraska last defeated the Hoosiers in 2017, a drought that ended on Wednesday night with an 86-70 Cornhusker victory. The Huskers took down Indiana behind another big performance from Keisei Tominaga, who put together his best game of the season.

The Olympian racked up a season-high 28 points in the win, making it his third 20-plus point game this season. He also led Nebraska in shooting, earning a season-high nine-of-15 in field goal shooting and a season-high four-of-ten in shooting from beyond the arc.

Tom Allen dismissed as Indiana football coach

Indiana University has announced a change in leadership for their football program.

Indiana University has announced a change in leadership for their football program. Head coach Tom Allen was dismissed after seven seasons on the job. Allen ended his tenure at Indiana with a career record of 33-49 with three bowl-game appearances. Athletic Director Scott Dolson has stated that a search for Allen’s replacement is already underway.

“After continued evaluation of our entire football program, I have determined that we have lost momentum and that a change in leadership is necessary at this time. I want to thank Tom for all of the contributions he has made to IU in his seven years leading our program. His passion, character, and class made a positive impact on our student-athletes. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The university and Allen have already announced an agreement on a financial buyout. The school will make two $7.75 million installments that will be paid with athletic department donor funds. In his first public statement since the firing, Allen said that being the head coach at Indiana was the greatest honor of his long coaching career.

“It has been my greatest professional honor to serve as Indiana’s head football coach for the past seven years.  Representing this University and this State has meant more to me than you can imagine.  Our entire journey here has been based on a simple concept – Love.  Each.  Other.”

Allen is now the third Big Ten coach to be fired during the 2023 season, following Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald and Michigan State’s Mel Tucker.

Chargers UDFA Raheem Layne making case for roster spot

Meet the undrafted free agent who’s been flashing at Chargers training camp.

The Chargers are well-known for developing undrafted free agents.

From 1997 to 2020, at least one rookie free agent made the opening day roster. Antonio Gates, Kassim Osgood, Wes Welker, and Austin Ekeler are among the most notable names, but team staples like Stephen Cooper and Mike Tolbert have also found their way onto the squad.

On Saturday, undrafted safety Raheem Layne made his case that he should be the next in that long line of success.

With Derwin James still sitting out while the team negotiates a contract extension and Mark Webb out with an injury, opportunity has been more available at safety. The free agent from Indiana started his day with a pass breakup down the sideline against speedster DeAndre Carter in 1v1s, then perfectly mirrored starting tight end Gerald Everett for another pass deflection. In team period, Layne erased an end around to Carter and held his own in coverage against Jalen Guyton and Donald Parham.

There’s not a lot of room in the secondary, but Layne could be playing his way into making it a difficult decision. Webb has now missed time in both of his pro seasons; as talented as he is, at some point, he has to stay on the field to be fairly evaluated. Alohi Gilman has been a bit of a quieter performer in camp and is no guarantee to make the team despite opening camp with the first teamers.

Is Layne likely to unseat the young veterans for a spot on the 53? Not really. But he could be a valuable practice squad player for a Chargers squad that had to dip into that depth frequently a season ago with a myriad of injuries at safety. So now, there’s reason to be optimistic that Layne could fill in at roughly a replacement level if called upon.

Watch Bob Knight’s emotional return to Indiana after 20 years

Bob Knight is back at Indiana.

Indiana coach Bob Knight made his return to Indiana’s Assembly Hall on Saturday for the school’s ceremony honoring the 1979-90 team he coached, his first appearance in the building since he was fired by the University in 2000.

Knight got a big ovation from the audience, hugs from his former players and “Bobby” chants coming down from the stands. It was an absolutely incredible moment.

Knight was booted away from Indiana for good reason in 2000 when he was fired for putting his hands on a student. The university was right to do that.

Still, Knight meant a lot to a lot of people at Indiana. It’s great to see them taking a few minutes to honor him in this way after so long. What a gesture.

5 things to know about new Bears CB Tre Roberson

The Bears turned to the Canadian Football League for their first offseason acquisition. Get to know new Bears CB Tre Roberson.

The Bears turned to the Canadian Football League for their first offseason acquisition. Chicago landed Calgary cornerback Tre Roberson, who’s quite the hot commodity, considering he chose the Bears over a handful of other NFL teams.

Adam Schefter first reported the signing Tuesday evening before Roberson took to Twitter to share his excitement at joining the Bears — and he’s already talking Super Bowl.

We can certainly speculate what Roberson’s signing means for the future of Prince Amukamara, who was already predicted to be a cap-casualty.

But let’s get to know the Bears’ new cornerback. Here are five things to know about Tre Roberson:

1. Roberson was considered the top free agent in the CFL

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The Bears are getting not only the most-sought after cornerback in the CFL, but arguably the top free-agent in the entire league. Chicago certainly feels high on him considering they’re expected to give Roberson the largest CFL-to-NFL compensation since the Dolphins signed Cameron Wake for $4.9 million in 2014, according to Adam Schefter.

Roberson, a CFL All-Star, had an impressive 2019 season with seven interceptions and 41 tackles in 16 games with the Stampeders. Roberson also won the Grey Cup in his first season with Calgary in 2018.
