One free agent each NFL team should want to sign in 2024

Our NFL Wire editors identified one pending free agent that each team should sign to help improve their roster.

We’re less than a month away from the start of NFL free agency, which begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 13. But the legal tampering window opens two days before that on March 11 at 12 p.m. ET, where teams will be able to negotiate with free agents before the official start of the new league year.

The 2024 salary cap hasn’t been set yet, but it’s expected to land north of $240 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. A number of NFL teams have some work to do over the next month when it comes to building their 2024 rosters.

Our NFL Wire editors identified one pending free agent (at the time of publication) that each team should sign to help improve their roster. And it seems like Chris Jones, Tee Higgins, Brian Burns and Danielle Hunter will be in high demand.

Here’s how free agency could impact each position for the 2024 Cowboys

A position-by-position review of what the Cowboys have heading into the offseason and some suggestions on where they could find help. | From @cdpiglet

The Dallas Cowboys season ended before everyone thought it would, upset by the Green Bay Packers in the wild card round of the playoffs. It was the Cowboys first home loss of the year, as they were the only home team to lose in the round. Many speculated the coaching staff would change, but Jerry Jones believes continuity matters, and has brought head coach Mike McCarthy back for the final season on his contract. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn could even be retained if he isn’t hired as a head coach elsewhere.

This left many fans frustrated because how would the team improve while running it back with the same staff and core set of players. Even if the 2023 draft class greatly improved and the team got more impact from Mazi Smith, Luke Schoonmaker, DeMarvion Overshown, and others, they would still need more to contend in the NFC, let alone for the Super Bowl.

Before the 2024 draft class comes to fruition, free agency will shape the majority of roster decisions for the club to make any improvement. The teams cap room shouldn’t be an issue because they can open up plenty of room with extensions to quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver CeeDee Lamb alone. Restructures and contracts they can move off of could create more space as well, so it will only be up to the willingness of the Jones’ to pay the players they want to sign.

The Cowboys are likely to lose their best free agent this offseason

CB Stephon Gilmore played an enormous role on the Cowboys in 2023 but given the circumstances he’s likely to leave in free agency. | From @ReidDHanson

The Cowboys have a laundry list of internal free agents hitting the market in 2024 and very limited resources available to retain them. Sitting with -$21,111,847 in effective cap space (per OTC), tough decisions await the suddenly idle franchise. For better or for worse, it’s become quite clear not everyone Dallas likes is going to be able to come back in 2024.

With Jayron Kearse, Tyron Smith, Tyler Biadasz, Stephon Gilmore, Johnathan Hankins and Tony Pollard all set to hit free agency, the Cowboys stand to lose as many as six starters this March. And the best of the bunch is likely to be one of those players on his way out the door.

An argument could be made Smith, Pollard or even Hankins is Dallas’ best free agent this year, and that’s perfectly fair. But by many accounts it’s Gilmore who was really the best of the bunch in 2023. Gilmore didn’t just play at a high-level last season, he also served an absolutely vital role after Trevon Diggs was lost.

Gilmore’s presence in the lineup (1,150 snaps), combined with DaRon Bland’s ability to bounce outside, allowed the Cowboys to survive an otherwise catastrophic loss to the secondary.

The depth at CB was razor thin from Week 3 on, and Gilmore’s high-end play combined with his week-to-week reliability made him one of the Cowboys’ most important players. Those traits are likely to put the veteran in high demand this offseason, even if his best years are likely behind him.

There’s no question the Cowboys should love to have Gilmore back in 2024, but given the circumstances at CB, it would be a difficult signing to justify.

Diggs is expected back for the start of the 2024 season and Bland’s breakout season demands a steady role in the starting lineup going forward. It’s already an embarrassment of riches between the two and with Diggs now making top-of-the-market pay, it would be fiscally irresponsible for Dallas to re-sign Gilmore with so many other needs elsewhere on the roster.

Gilmore served a vital purpose in Dallas in 2023 and provided veteran stability to a secondary that desperately needed it. He was an ideal pairing for both Diggs and Bland and offered toughness in both phases of the game. Even if his term was only one year his presence was a rousing success because in many ways, he saved the Cowboys’ season. But given the rise of Bland and the money already dedicated to Diggs, chances are Dallas will allow their top internal free agent to leave in March.

Dalton Risner continues to rise to the occasion

Dalton Risner continues to shine as a Minnesota Viking

Minnesota Vikings left guard Dalton Risner has been impressive in his first year with the team. According to Pro Football Focus, Risner has not allowed a sack on 412 pass-blocking snaps for the Vikings this season.

Risner joined the team via free agency after Minnesota lacked depth along the offensive line with linemen Chris Reed and Oli Udoh out due to injury. His relationship with offensive line coach Chris Kuper was a likely significant reason for the signing. Brought in as a backup behind Ezra Cleveland, Risner was to be a reinforcement and allow Blake Brandel to move back to the reserve tackle position.

After Cleveland suffered a foot injury two weeks before the trade deadline, Risner stepped in and never had to give the job back. Cleveland was shipped off to Jacksonville, and Risner stepped in and became more than just a body at the guard position. He became an asset on an improved offensive line.

While his status as a Viking in 2024 is up in the air, there is no doubt that Risner made himself some money in the upcoming off-season.

Podcast: Predicting which Patriots top free agents stay and go in 2024

Who’s staying and who’s leaving the Patriots at the end of the season?

When it comes to the New England Patriots, there has been so much talk surrounding the 2024 NFL draft that free agency is seemingly being overshadowed.

Not only will the Patriots enter free agency as one of the team’s with the most cap space, but they’ll also have one of the most extensive pending free agent lists in the NFL. Key players, such as Kyle Dugger, Hunter Henry, Kendrick Bourne, Trent Brown, Mike Onwenu and Ezekiel Elliott might all be playing elsewhere in 2024.

Ryan O’Leary and I discuss the possibilities, as well as predict if these players stay and go, in this week’s episode of the Patriots Wire Podcast.

20 Chargers players who will be pending free agents this offseason

The Chargers have 20 players set to hit the free agency market.

The Chargers will have some tough decisions in the next few months, with a handful of players slated to hit free agency.

It also doesn’t help that they will be strapped for cash, set to have the fourth-lowest salary cap totals among all 32 teams in the league.

Here are 20 Chargers players who will be pending free agents in 2024 (via Spotrac):

Ranking 15 best pending free agent wide receivers in 2024

Who are the 15 best pending free agent wide receivers in 2024, and could the Patriots be in play for any of them?

It’s no secret that the New England Patriots will be in the market for a serious upgrade at wide receiver in the offseason.

The team likely finishing the season in position to land a top-three pick in the 2024 NFL draft means they’ll be in position to take Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., if they wanted to go down that path.

That decision would likely anger the masses because it could mean another year of Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe under center at quarterback.

The best option for an immediate upgrade for New England at receiver would be addressing the problem in free agency. There are a plethora of playmakers that would improve the Patriots’ dire situation significantly.

The team is expected to have the money to spend to get whoever they want to finally help put the offense over the top. Here are the top-15 wide receivers expected to hit the open market in 2024:

Cowboys have 19 pending free agents in 2024 as cap rumored around $242.5M

A look at the Cowboys pending free agency class and what the expected 2024 salary cap may look like. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of their third-straight double-digit win campaign. It’s the first time since the 1994 through 1996 seasons they’ve been able to claim that feat. Being that this is the most consistent the franchise has been since their Super Bowl days, it stands to reason the front office will look to do what it can to keep the roster in tact.

Of course, if the club doesn’t advance past the divisional round, the perception changes in a heartbeat. But if Dallas does make it to the championship rounds, they’ll want to do as much as they can to run it back. That includes looking at their 19 pending free agents.

The owners Winter meetings are taking place in Dallas this week, and among the myriad of topics discussed annually at this time of the year is the salary cap for next year. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer is reporting that no announcement will be made, but several tuned-in entities are predicting the 2024 number to come in between $240 million and $245 million.

That would be a jump of at least $15 million over the 2023 cap, but Dallas has concerns even with that total. Right now, Dallas is projected to be around $16 million over the median of those two numbers based on the salaries already on the roster.

There are restructure triggers galore in their current deals and extensions which could also reduce some of the larger cap hits like Dak Prescott’s $59.5 million or Zack Martin’s $28.5 million. And it will be needed to create space to bring in outside help or re-sign these names.
