Oklahoma beats Army 10-1 to stay alive in Charlottesville Regional

The Oklahoma Sooners beat Army 10-1 to stay alive in the Charlottesville Regional of the NCAA tournament.

Oklahoma shrugged off a slow start to beat Army 10-1 and avoid elimination and keep their postseason hopes alive. It was a good way to rebound after Oklahoma lost to East Carolina 14-5 to open the Charlottesville Regional.

Bryce Madron got the scoring started for Oklahoma with a double that sent John Spikerman home to make it 1-0 Sooners in the first inning. OU extended the lead in the third inning with a Madron sac-fly that brought Spikerman to put the Sooners up 2-0 after three innings.

Oklahoma started to really explode on offense in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Kendall Pettis’ single plated a pair of Sooners to make it 4-0 in favor of Oklahoma. Madron added to his RBI total on the day with a two-RBI triple to left that scored Pettis and Spikerman, extending the lead to 6-0. Anthony Mackenzie helped round out the scoring in the inning with an infield single to short, which made it 7-0.

In the sixth inning, an Army sac-fly brought in Derek Berg to make it 7-1, but Oklahoma responded in the bottom of the sixth with a Wallace Clark home run to push the lead back to seven.

Finally, Oklahoma put the exclamation point on the game thanks to a Easton Carmichael two-run home run.

Braxton Douthit threw a complete game for the win, recording seven strikeouts while allowing four hits and four walks. He came up clutch in the Sooners’ elimination game.

Bryce Madron was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Spikerman was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. The two were huge at the top of the order for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Oklahoma stayed alive with the win, which set up a Sunday battle against the loser of East Carolina and Virginia at 11 a.m.

Oklahoma Sooners beat Oklahoma State 9-5 to advance in Big 12 championships

The Oklahoma Sooners advanced in the Big 12 baseball championships with a 9-5 win over Oklahoma State.

The Oklahoma Sooners jumped out to an early lead in their Bedlam matchup with Oklahoma State and cruised to a 9-5 victory to advance in the Big 12 baseball championships.

The Sooners opened the game with a pair of walks to John Spikerman and Kendall Pettis to open the game in the top of the first. A Bryce Madron sacrifice fly to right field put runners on second and third with one out in the inning.

Dakota Harris jumped on the first pitch he saw from Oklahoma State pitcher Carson Benge for the two-run single. Harris then advanced to second on an Anthony Mackenzie fielder’s choice before being driven in by an RBI single from Easton Carmichael to make it 3-0 after the top of the first.

Getting the start for the Sooners, Carson Atwood provided a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first, holding onto Oklahoma’s momentum.

The Sooners added another run in the top of the second on a Pettis sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 and Atwood retired the Cowboys in order in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third, the Sooners scored on a sacrifice fly from Jackson Nicklaus to make it 5-0. Then Spikerman singled up the middle to bring Sebastian Orduno in from third to extend the lead to six. Then Oklahoma took advantage of an Oklahoma State wild pitch when Pettis was able to reach first after striking out, allowing Wallace Clark to score to make it 7-0.

The Cowboys finally got on the board in the bottom of the third with three runs, chasing Atwood out of the game. James Hitt came in to help limit the damage and then threw 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and two walks before giving way to Carter Campbell who came in and threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk.

With the score 7-4 in the seventh, the Sooners got back to work offensively. Nicklaus reached on an error, which allowed Kade Fletcher to score on the sacrifice. Later in the inning, Mackenzie walked with the bases loaded to make it 9-4 Oklahoma.

The Sooners allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Campbell was able to keep the Cowboys off balance over the final four innings.

John Spikerman and Easton Carmichael each collected a pair of hits and six different Sooners drove in a run.

A bubble team for the NCAA tournament, this is a huge step to securing a postseason berth. The Sooners now move on to face the winner of the final game of day one between the No. 3 seed West Virginia and the No. 6 seed Texas Tech.

The Big 12 championships begin play on Wednesday morning at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, at 9 a.m. CT with TCU and Kansas State facing off.

There will be a lot of fantastic baseball this week, and we’ll track the results for you here.

Sooners Braden Carmichael named Big 12 pitcher of the week

After a complete game shutout of Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Sooners pitcher Braden Carmichael earned Big 12 pitcher of the week.

On the last weekend of the regular season, the Oklahoma Sooners dropped two of three to Oklahoma State as they battled for positioning ahead of the Big 12 baseball championships this week in Arlington.

In Oklahoma’s two losses on the weekend, the Sooners were outscored by the Cowboys 24-3. In their one win, Braden Carmichael pitched a gem, throwing a complete game shutout to lead the Sooners to a 5-0 win on Friday night.

For his efforts, Carmichael earned Big 12 pitcher of the week. It was the fourth conference award earned by Oklahoma in 2023. Carmichael’s shutout was the first for the Sooners since Dane Acker’s no-hitter back in March of 2020.

Carmichael allowed just four hits and surrendered zero walks on the evening, though he did hit a batter. Only twice did Carmichael allow multiple runners in an inning and he didn’t allow the Cowboys to reach third base all night.

It was a clutch performance for the fifth-year senior after the Sooners were forced to use six pitchers in the opener on Thursday, a 13-2 loss.

The Sooners now get ready for the Big 12 championships that begin on Wednesday. Oklahoma will take on Oklahoma State at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

Oklahoma’s Carter Campbell named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week

After a strong weekend in Austin, Oklahoma’s Carter Campbell earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors.

Carter Campbell had a monster series against Texas over the weekend. The junior was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week after registering a win and a save in the three games against the Longhorns in Austin, where the Sooners got the road sweep.

He pitched 8.2 innings in three games last week and allowed just one run on five hits. Campbell had four strikeouts and didn’t allow a single walk across his three appearances.

Campbell entered in relief against Texas on Friday to help the Sooners earn the win in the final three innings, where he held Texas to just two singles. That performance earned Campbell his fifth win of the season.

On Saturday, he came in to preserve the lead in the sixth. Campbell allowed just one single and recorded three strikeouts to earn his first save at Oklahoma.

Campbell has been great in Big 12 play this season. He’s first in appearances in the conference and ranks third nationally. He’s 5-3 on the season with a 4.20 ERA. He’s allowed just one run over his last six appearances spanning 13 innings pitched. He’s allowed an opponent’s batting average of .234, which ranks second among Oklahoma pitchers.

The Sooners get back in action this week with four games at home. They host Oral Roberts on Tuesday night and then face Kansas in a conference series over the weekend.

Easton Carmichael earns Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award

For his effort in Oklahoma’s 5-0 week, Easton Carmichael earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors.

Oklahoma Sooners baseball is heating up as they get ready for Big 12 play later this week. The Sooners have won five straight and nine of their last 10 to improve to 11-5 on the season.

Their three-game sweep of future Big 12 foe Houston served as a strong reminder that the College World Series runner-up is still a force to be reckoned with.

Last week, as the Oklahoma Sooners went 5-0, a star emerged in the lineup and behind the plate. Easton Carmichael was phenomenal, and for his efforts picked up the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Week award.

Carmichael went 12 for 21 (.571) with two home runs, two triples, 13 RBIs, and six runs scored. Against Houston, he was 8 for 14 (.571) with a home run, two triples, eight RBIs, and four runs.

It’s Oklahoma’s first weekly award of the 2023 season, but with the way they’re playing, more are sure to follow. Oklahoma now gets set for a midweek matchup with Wichita State before hosting the TCU Horned Frogs to open Big 12 play this weekend.

Oklahoma ends two game slide, coasts to 7-2 win over Rider

Oklahoma gets out of a two-game slide with a 7-2 win on Saturday against the Rider Broncs.

While the expectations are sky-high for the Oklahoma Sooners following last season’s trip to the College World Series, the Sooners have struggled out of the gate.

Saturday was a step in the right direction, though. Oklahoma bounced back from two consecutive losses to Abilene Christian and Rider with a comfortable 7-2 win Saturday afternoon in Norman, Oklahoma.

Friday’s loss was highlighted by the Sooners leaving 14 runners on base. In a game they lost 6-3, just a bit more execution probably changes the outcome. The Sooners took that loss to heart and responded with seven runs Saturday afternoon.

One player who has been consistent of late, Anthony Mackenzie, kept his hot weekend going by posting a 4 for 5 day. He’s now 8 for 10 in his last two games.

Freshman catcher Easton Carmichael delivered in the biggest way with his three RBI day, setting the tone for the offense. An RBI ground out followed by a two-run single from Carmichael in the bottom of the third provided an immediate answer to Rider, who scored in the top half. The Sooners took the lead, and never looked back.

Shortstop Dakota Harris drove in Mackenzie in the bottom of the 4th to make it 4-1. Part of Mackenzie’s four-hit day included an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Oklahoma scored on a sac fly, and Carmichael delivered an RBI triple to push the Sooners out to a 7-1 lead.

The Sooners’ pitching staff was stout from beginning to end. Big right-handed junior Will Carsten started the game and gave Oklahoma a quality start by spreading out three hits, one run, four K’s, and one walk over five innings.

That set the stage for Carson Pierce, a right-handed pitcher originally from Edmond, Oklahoma. He went on to spin four innings of one-run ball himself. He also notched 3 strikeouts in the process.

Oklahoma coasted to a comfortable win Saturday and now sit at 3-5 on the season. In the win, Oklahoma stranded nine runners on base. That’s something they’ll want to improve as they get deeper into the schedule.

The Sooners will look to win their first series of the year on Sunday afternoon as they battle Rider in the rubber match of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm C.T. at L. Dale Mitchell Stadium.
