Oklahoma Sooners beat UAB 11-1 in run-rule fashion on Grace Lyons walk-off grand slam

The Oklahoma Sooners picked up another run-rule win Friday night 11-1 over UAB with a walk-off grand slam by Grace Lyons.

The Oklahoma Sooners continue to win in impressive fashion as they took the first of two weekend games from UAB 11-1 on a walk-off grand slam to win the game in a run-rule. The Sooners improved to 31-0 on the season and haven’t slowed their torrid pace. UAB falls to 20-12 on the season

Jordy Bahl picked up her 14th win of the season and remained unbeaten. She threw four innings and allowed one earned run, striking out three. She worked around jams early in the outing to keep UAB at bay, including a bases loaded-one out situation.

Jayda Coleman got the Sooners on the board first with a two-run home run in the second inning for her fourth of the season. After UAB responded with a run in the top of the third, Oklahoma picked up two more in the fourth after a hit by pitch of home run Queen Jocelyn Alo and a catcher’s interference during a Grace Lyon’s at-bat.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Sooners picked up two runs on an error on a Rylie Boone grounder to short. After a walk to to Alo, Grace Lyons ended it on a walk off grand slam deep to center fields.

Lyons finished the night 2-3 with a home run and five RBIs. According to SoonerSports.com, it was Lyons third walk-off hit in a row, including home runs to end it in back-to-back games.

The Sooners will host UAB again on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at Marita Haynes Field looking to extend their undefeated season.

Oklahoma Sooners softball the unanimous No. 1 in latest USA TODAY/NFCA Coaches Poll

The hits just keep on coming for an Oklahoma Sooners softball team that just cannot be stopped. The team stands 30-0 and is the unanimous No. 1 team in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll.

The hits just keep on coming for an Oklahoma Sooners softball team that just cannot be stopped. The team stands 30-0 on the season and is the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation in the latest USA TODAY/NFCA Coaches Poll.

Oklahoma maintained its hold on No. 1 and the top five remained intact in this week’s 2022 USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Sooners (29-0 at the time of release) were part of a top five that went a perfect 19-0 last week.

OU needed a two-out walk-off home run by Tiare Jennings to edge Baylor 3-1 and complete the sweep in its Big 12 opening series. Prior to Sunday’s nail biter, the Sooner posted two eight-run wins over the Bears and a third on the road at No. 8 Kentucky. – NFCA

OU Softball has been pretty much unstoppable this season, but Baylor did manage to push them in their first series of Big 12 Conference play.

After the Sooners’ three-game series sweep against Baylor, they got back to their home run ways with a 10-1 win over Wichita State. Four Sooners hit home runs led by Grace Lyons who had her second three home run game of her career.

The Sooners will next welcome UAB to Norman for a two-game set this weekend as they look to continue their undefeated season.

Oklahoma State can be found at No. 6 in the country, while Texas is No. 21. Along with the Sooners, they are the only representatives the Big 12 has in the rankings at this point in the season.

Florida State remains the No. 2 team in the country sitting at 30-2.

The SEC is well-represented in the latest top 25. Alabama is the No. 4 team in the country followed by No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Kentucky, No. 10 Arkansas, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 15 Georgia, No. 17 Auburn, No. 20 LSU, and No. 24 Missouri.

Whenever the move to the SEC does happen for Oklahoma, there’s going to be much stiffer competition on a regular basis.

Social media reacts to Jocelyn Alo setting new all-time home run record

How did social media react to Jocelyn Alo breaking the all-time home run record in Oklahoma’s 11-0 win over Hawaii?

With the 96th home run of her career, Jocelyn Alo made history, breaking the NCAA all-time home run record. Alo, who passed former Sooners great Lauren Chamberlain, was able to hit the record breaking home run in her home state of Hawaii in front of family and friends.

Against Baylor on Thursday night and Hawaii on Friday night, Alo got the benefit of coaches that were willing to let their pitchers challenge the new home run queen. After being walked 16 times in the last eight games, Alo got to see some pitches and she took advantage.

Already with two hits on the day, Alo hit her record breaking home run in the sixth inning to help the Sooners complete the 11-0 run-rule win of Hawaii.

The senior now has an opportunity to set a potentially unbreakable standard for home runs with more than half the season remaining.

OU softball game time changed for home opener: How to Watch, Stream, listen to Oklahoma vs. Minnesota

Can the Oklahoma Sooners stay undefeated? Will Jocelyn Alo break the home run record? Here’s how you can tune in for OU’s home opener Monday.

The Oklahoma Sooners (15-0) softball team will play its home opener at Martia Hynes Field on Monday against the Minnesota Golden Gophers (13-6). The Sooners remained undefeated despite some close calls last weekend in the Mary Nutter Classic.

After run-rule wins against Cal-State Fullerton, Long Beach State, and No. 8/10 Arizona, the Sooners needed extra innings to overcome a test from the Tennessee Volunteers before battling through a tough strong defensive effort against Utah to come away with the five-game sweep in Southern California.

With the calendar turned to March, the Sooners return to the friendly confines of Norman where Jocelyn Alo will look to break the tie for the NCAA’s all-time home run record with fellow Sooners legend Lauren Chamberlain.

Though Alo went without a home run last weekend, she earned key walks and had strong at-bats. Tiare Jennings took over the team lead in home runs with nine as the Sooners found multiple ways to win ball games to stay undefeated.

The Sooners play one game in Norman before heading back on the road to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Rainbow Wahine Classic where they’ll face off against Baylor and California before a two-game set against Hawaii to close out the weekend series.

Will the home opener on Monday be the game Alo breaks the record and more importantly, can the Sooners stay undefeated? Here’s how you can tune in to all the action. With weather expected to descend upon central Oklahoma, the game time has been moved up an hour to 4 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma freshman Jordy Bahl and redshirt senior Jana Johns swept the Big 12 weekly softball awards.

For the second time in the season’s first three weeks, Oklahoma softball swept the Big 12 weekly awards. Freshman pitcher Jordy Bahl was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for a second time and redshirt senior Jana Johns was named Big 12 Player of the Week.

In the process, Bahl became the first Sooner freshman to throw a perfect game since Paige Parker in 2015. Then, against No. 17 Tennessee, Bahl struck out 16 in 8.1 innings to match the most strikeouts by a Sooner pitcher since Giselle Juarez struck out 16 versus Wisconsin in the NCAA Norman Regional in 2019.

The Papillion, Neb., right-hander finished her stay in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with 31 strikeouts, a 2-0 record, a 1.62 ERA and a .121 opponent batting average.

It’s Johns’ first Big 12 weekly award of her career. During OU’s 5-0 march through the Mary Nutter Classic, Johns hit four home runs and registered nine RBIs. The Calhoun, Ga., product hit a pair of homers and had 3 RBIs in the Sooners’ 9-8 win in 10 innings over the Vols. Johns finished the Mary Nutter Classic with a .429 batting average over the tournament’s five games.

On Feb. 15, Oklahoma sophomore Tiare Jennings was named the Big 12 Player of the Week and Bahl earned Pitcher of the Week. Then, on Feb. 22, OU redshirt senior Jocelyn Alo was named Big 12 Player of the Week and fellow redshirt senior Hope Trautwein shared Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors with Oklahoma State’s Kelly Maxwell.

The Sooners have a rare weekend off before playing host to Minnesota on Monday, March 7, for their home opener at Marita Hynes Field at 5 p.m. After the home date against the Golden Gophers, Oklahoma heads to Honolulu, Hawaii, to take part in the Rainbow Wahine Classic.

The Sooners will play Baylor on March 10 at 7:30 p.m., Cal on Mach 11 at 7:30 p.m. and then Hawaii on March 11 at 10 p.m. and on March 12 at 4 p.m.

Jocelyn Alo named Softball America’s Player of the Month for February

Oklahoma softball star Jocelyn Alo added another honor to her lengthy list after Softball America named her its Player of the Month.

Jocelyn Alo has another honor to add to her collection. Softball America named Alo its Player of the Month for the season-opening month of February for the 2022 college softball season.

Alo already has seven home runs on the season, 20 RBI and a .473 batting average. In a blistering three-game span against McNeese State, Houston and Texas State in the Houston Classic on Feb. 19-20, Alo blasted five home runs and racked up 10 RBI in the three games combined.

With her homer against Texas State, Alo tied former Sooner Lauren Chamberlain atop the NCAA record books with 95 career home runs. During this past weekend in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, Alo didn’t have many legitimate opportunities to break the record as teams pitched around her.

In fact, of Alo’s 16 walks on the season, 10 came during the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. When teams have pitched to her, Alo has been every bit of the superstar that helped her earn 2021 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year honors.

Oklahoma’s next scheduled date is on Monday, March 7 when the Sooners welcome in Minnesota for OU’s home opener at Marita Hynes Field at 5 p.m. After that game against Minnesota, Oklahoma will travel to Alo’s native state of Hawaii for the Rainbow Wahine Classic from Honolulu.

OU plays Baylor there on Thursday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m., Cal on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and then a pair of games against Hawaii on Friday at 10 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.

Whether Alo breaks the record at home against Minnesota or in her native state of Hawaii, it will make for quite the celebration.

Oklahoma remains undefeated with 2-1 win over Utah to close out the Mary Nutter Classic

Hope Trautwein and Jordy Bahl combine for a two-hitter as the Oklahoma Sooners stayed undefeated with a 2-1 win over the Utah Utes.

The Oklahoma Sooners completed another perfect weekend, beating the Utah Utes 2-1 in the finale of the Mary Nutter Classic. The Sooners are now 15-0 on the season and have faced and overcome some adversity along the way.

Not every win is going to be a run-rule performance, but the Sooners have found ways to win in their last two, including this matchup against the Utes.

Utah took a 1-0 lead in the third inning

The Oklahoma Sooners struggled for the most part against Utah’s pitching and when the Sooners started to get things going, the Utes got some timely defensive play to keep the game from breaking open.

Utah pitchers Sydney Sandez and Halle Morris combined to allow just five hits and two walks on the day and got some timely defense behind them. With the Sooners threatening to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth, they had runners on first and second with nobody out.

Tiare Jennings hit it right at third baseman Julia Jimenez who was guarding the line to protect against the extra-base hit. After fielding the ball, Jimenez quickly stepped on the bag before throwing to second where Aliya Belarde got the second out and threw to first to complete the triple play.

In the following inning, the Sooners again looked to extend their 2-1 lead, and yet again, it was Julia Jimenez making the defensive play to get the Utes out of the jam. With runners on second and third and one out, Jimenez caught a line drive before it hit the ground and stepped on third to end the threat.

Hope Trautwein gave up one earned run on two hits in four innings of work before giving way to Jordy Bahl who threw three perfect innings to close out the game for Oklahoma.

After dominating at the plate for much of the weekend, the top four hitters in the Sooners lineup were a combined 2 for 9 with two walks and two strikeouts.

Oklahoma returns to Norman for a break before their home opener against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Monday, Mar. 7 at 5 p.m. CT.

Social media reacts to Jayda Coleman’s extra innings walk-off home run against Tennessee

Jayda Coleman hit a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth inning to keep OU unbeaten. Here was the social media reaction.

On a day where Jocelyn Alo was walked four times in the two games combined against No. 8/10 Arizona and No. 17/17 Tennessee, history had to wait. The fireworks for Oklahoma softball did not.

After Oklahoma enjoyed a run-rule 10-2 victory over Arizona in game one, Tennessee handed the Sooners their first true scare of the 2022 season. OU jumped in front of the Vols 4-0, but Tennessee scratched one run across in the fourth inning, brought home three in the fifth and then plated two in the seventh. Suddenly, Oklahoma and Tennessee were headed into extra innings.

OU and Tennesse were both held scoreless in the eighth and then traded RBI singles in the ninth to set the stage for the dramatics. Tennessee jumped in front 8-7 in the top of the 10th inning after an error plated the go-ahead run for the Vols.

The international tiebreaker rule meant that Taylon Snow started the bottom of the 10th on second base. Then, following Alyssa Brito flying out to centerfield and Mackenzie Donihoo popping out to shortstop, OU was down to its final out with sophomore Jayda Coleman coming to the plate.

On a 2-1 count, Coleman launched the next pitch over the left field fence for a walk-off, two-run home run and Oklahoma stayed perfect at 14-0 with a 9-8 extra innings win over Tennessee.

OU freshman pitcher Jordy Bahl struck out a career-high 16 in the contest against Tennessee in 8.1 innings. It matched the most strikeouts for a Sooner pitcher since Giselle Juarez sat down 16 in the NCAA Norman Regional versus Wisconsin in May of 2019. She was replaced by Nicole May for 1.2 innings, but Bahl reentered the circle to close the game late for Oklahoma.

Here’s how social media reacted to Coleman’s two-run bop.
