2022 NHL trade deadline winners and losers

Monday’s trade deadline was a busy one.

The 2022 NHL trade deadline has officially come and gone. On a day that saw nearly 30 deals made — at the time of this writing, anyway — it was quite the chaotic afternoon, even though there were very few blockbusters made.

This year’s trade deadline certainly was much more active than the 2021 deadline, which saw fewer than 20 deals made on deadline day, so it’s fair to say the day went by quite fast. Even with over half of the league capped out, nearly every single team made some sort of trade or deal by Monday’s 3 p.m. deadline. And hey, in a flat salary cap world, that’s not too bad!

Now that the rush has died down, let’s take a look at the big picture! Here are our winners and losers from a busy 2022 NHL trade deadline.

NHL broadcaster Kevin Weekes keeps breaking trades with videos in random places and hockey fans have jokes

Kevin Weekes in the NHL trade deadline MVP.

The NHL trade deadline is one of the more exciting times of the hockey calendar and Kevin Weekes is making it all the better.

Weeks is a broadcaster and analyst for NHL Network and for the last few days, he’s been reporting on and breaking major trades via video from increasingly random places. Most NHL insiders and reporters just tweet out details of trades, but recently Weekes has eschewed tradition and is posting videos alongside the trade.

Originally, they started off quite mundane, either from his house, the office, or even the parking lot. But then, things changed over the weekend when Weekes reported on a trade… from the barber’s chair.

Then Weekes helped break the Claude Giroux trade to the Florida Panthers outside in sunglasses with the New York skyline in the background.

Hockey fans instantly became enamored with Weekes’s increasingly hilarious location choices for trade videos, so much so that it became a meme ahead of deadline day.

Marc-Andre Fleury trade: Who won the deal between the Blackhawks and the Wild?

Last year’s Vezina winner is headed to Minnesota!

The 2022 NHL trade deadline is closing in and Monday saw a huge blockbuster deal go down before noon.

The Minnesota Wild have acquired goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury from the Chicago Blackhawks in what is, so far, the biggest deal of the day. Fleury was our highest-ranked goaltender on our trade target list headed into the deadline and for good reason, the 37-year-old is less than a year removed from a Vezina Trophy winning season and is an absolute pro to boot.

We’re still a handful of hours away from the deadline, so let’s break down the Fleury to Minnesota trade and hand out some grades to determine who won this blockbuster deal!
