Cornerback seems like one of the most likely options for the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round.
That’s why the position dominates the list of 15 players we love in the first round for the Bengals and even in our final seven-round mock draft, corner is the first thing the team does after the opening round.
USA Today’s Charlie Goldsmith sees similar things while making Flordia corner Kaiir Elam the pick at No. 31:
“The Bengals don’t have to draft a Day 1 starter, but they can draft a rookie who could challenge for a starting spot. Elam fits the Bengals’ long-term plan at cornerback and has the size, speed and physicality to compete with Eli Apple in training camp for a starting role immediately.”
That pick comes with the best center in the class, Iowa’s Tyler Linderbaum, still on the board. It also illustrates the sheer need to grab a prospect like Elam who can play situationally right away while possibly developing into a long-term No. 1 corner with time.
Size, fit and production all suggest Elam would be a dynamite pick:

Washington Wire editor Bryan Manning and contributing writer Ivan Lambert joined together to produce their 2022 NFL mock draft of the first round.
Selections 1-16 were provided Tuesday, with selections 17-32 coming in this column.
This mock draft leans upon the current draft order for Bryan and Ivan’s selections. Bryan began the draft making the No. 1 pick, while Ivan picks up at No. 2, and they rotated each selection. The Washington Wire mock draft did not include trades.

There are almost as many ways to do mock drafts as there are mock drafts, which is saying something this time of year. There are the mocks that try and get into the heads of every team. There are the mocks that are more like big boards, that align the best players overall down the first round. And there are those mocks in which the Mocker in Charge puts his or her general manager hat on, and tries to anticipate the best moves for every NFL team.
This particular mock, for the most part, is one of those “What I would do” mocks, in which I try to marry the best overall prospects with teams and team needs through the first three rounds. There are no trades in this particular mock; it’s more about fits and situations.
So here, with a few explained exceptions, is how the first three rounds of the 2022 NFL draft might go were I in charge of the whole thing.
