WATCH: Jacob Berry blasts are back in minor leagues

The No. 7 pick in the MLB draft is already making plays for the Marlins organization.

[autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] was a star in his lone season on the bayou as he hit .370 with nine doubles, 15 homers and 48 RBI. He started at third base for most of the season while also making an appearance or two in the outfield.

He was deemed the best college hitting prospect of the 2022 MLB draft by MLB.com. Those stats led to him being selected in the first round at No. 7 overall by the Miami Marlins.

Berry started his minor league season in Rookie ball before he was called up to the Marlins Single-A affiliate Jupiter Hammerheads. In 18 games for the Hammerheads, Berry has hit .235 with one homer and 11 RBI. Hopefully, this is the start of a long career in the bigs for Berry who has a long road ahead to the MLB.

The biggest knock on Berry as he transitions to the majors was his fielding. So far, he has a fielding percentage of 92% so he has checked that box already.

Cade Doughty picks up where he left off at LSU in minor leagues

Doughty is making an impact already in the Blue Jays organization.

[autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] and dingers… name a better duo.

Doughty, a two-year starter for the LSU Tigers, had a career batting average of .301 with 31 doubles, 30 homers, and 124 RBI while in Baton Rouge. He spent most of his time at either shortstop or second base for coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] this season.

After the season was over, Doughty was listed as a top 100 prospect for the 2022 MLB draft and was expected to be picked during the first or second day of the draft. He was selected in the second round (78th overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays.

After being drafted, Doughty was assigned to the Dunedin Blue Jays, the Single-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays that is based out of Dunedin, Florida. Doughty has since appeared in 10 games for the Blue Jays and is hitting .341 with four doubles, five homers, and 14 RBI.

So, Doughty is picking up right where he left off on the Bayou. Playing great defense and swinging a hot stick.

LSU baseball transfer Carter Young changes mind, signs with the Orioles

The 17th-round pick signed an over-slot deal, and he won’t be heading to Baton Rouge after all.

[autotag]Carter Young[/autotag] has pulled an Uno reverse card on the good folks of Baton Rouge as he signed with the Baltimore Orioles with only a few hours left for major league teams to sign their draft picks.

Young, a 17th-round pick in the 2022 MLB draft, signed for $1.325 million.

He transferred to LSU from Vanderbilt, where he starred as a freshman and had a batting average of .328 with three doubles and 12 RBI. After that, Young got into a slump at the plate as he had an average of .252 his sophomore year and only a .207 batting average during his junior season.

He has an immense amount of talent but ran into a prolonged rough stretch, which is common for baseball players. Many believed he would stick with LSU for a new start and to rebuild his draft stock into being picked within the first two days of the draft.

Baltimore had other plans.

The Orioles saved money on a few of their signings by giving them less money than their slot value was worth. They then used that cash to overpay for Young in the 17th round. Young, meanwhile, will hope to get out of his slump and eventually take the field at Camden Yards.

Gators get Brandon Sproat back after being drafted in 3rd round

Brandon Sproat is coming back to Condron Family Ballpark! The New York Mets failed to sign him by the deadline and the Gators get their ace for another year.

When Florida’s season came to an end in the regionals against Oklahoma, few took it harder than [autotag]Brandon Sproat[/autotag]. Many assumed it would be the final time they’d see Sproat in a Gators uniform, but now he’s set to return for his junior year at Florida.

The New York Mets selected Sproat in the third round of the 2022 MLB draft with the 90th overall pick but the two sides could not come to terms on a deal, according to Jim Callis of MLB.com. Sproat was drafted out of high school in the seventh round and was also the highest unsigned pick in the 2019 draft.

Aside from wanting to prove himself in a Gators uniform, the money really didn’t work out for Sproat. The Mets could spend just under $900,000 to sign Sproat without giving up a first-round pick in next year’s draft, and many peg the hard-throwing righty as a potential first-round talent if he can find a little more consistency.

For comparison, [autotag]Hunter Barco[/autotag], who was selected in the second round at No. 44 overall, signed an under-slot deal for $1.53 million with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Barco was also considered a first-round talent before his Tommy John surgery, so Sproat’s floor (barring some massive regression) looks to be around what Barco got while on the mend.

The Gators added Southern Miss starter [autotag]Hurston Waldrep[/autotag] through the transfer portal over the offseason, so he and Sproat can fight it out for the Friday night slot as UF’s top two arms. [autotag]Pierce Coppola[/autotag], whose season ended early with a back injury, should be the No. 3 guy and there are plenty of arms to test out during the week.

Sproat’s return also gives the Gators a trio of players that could go in the first tow round of next year’s draft. Along with Sproat and Waldrep, Florida has outfielder [autotag]Wyatt Langford[/autotag], who is considered one of the top college prospects in the class.

It’s still half a year away, but Florida baseball in 2023 has a chance to be something special, especially with the team ace back in tow.

UNC trasnfer Matt Keating signs with New York Yankees

After joining the Diamond Heels a few weeks ago through transfer, Matt Keating will be forgo his Carolina journey and start his MLB one.

UNC has lost another Diamond Heel to MLB with transfer pitcher [autotag]Matt Keating[/autotag] being selected in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Earlier this month it was announced that USC’s right-handed pitcher Keating would be suiting up in Carolina blue threads, however, after a call from the pros, he’s heading to the Big Apple.  The 21-year-old relief pitcher has signed with the New York Yankees after getting drafted by the team in the ninth round of the MLB draft.

As the 280th overall pick, Keating also received a $122,500 signing bonus as he is expected to work his way through the farm system before hitting the mound on the main stage.

The Nebraska native spent just one year with the Trojans, appearing in only 24 games. In those 24 games, Keating pitched 30 innings for seven saves, 44 strike outs and a 3.60 ERA. Working his way up through the rankings will not be anything new for Keating. Before becoming a Trojan last season, he was pitching on the community college level with the Storm of Southeast Community College.

Diamond Heels lose key recruit to MLB

A top UNC baseball recruit has opted to sign with the Boston Red Sox instead of enrolling at Chapel Hill.

In-state prospect Brooks Brannon committed to North Carolina as part of a recruiting class that could help the Tar Heels get back to the postseason next year. But the catcher won’t be heading to Chapel Hill and instead will be heading to the Boston Red Sox farm system.

After Brannon was drafted in the ninth round of the 2022 MLB draft this week, he’s made his decision and he is signing with the Red Sox. Brannon wasn’t projected to be taken that high out of high school but with Boston taking a chance on him there, the decision to go pro and follow the money appears to be the right one.

The Randleman, North Carolina native is coming off a monster senior season and was one of the best players not only in the state but in the country.

With the decision to sign with Boston, Brannon will now go to the instructional league for the year. He will then enter his first spring training with the franchise in 2023.
