Wisconsin football’s possible transfer portal targets this offseason

The Wisconsin Badgers will need to fix some areas of the depth chart entering 2021 after many seniors left for the NFL. The transfer portal

With the end of a college football season comes an offseason full of movement as teams look to sure-up their depth charts heading into the coming season.

In recent years we’ve seen the Wisconsin Badger football program go after some players in the transfer portal, most notably CB Nick Nelson in 2017 who started immediately and is now playing in the NFL.

Heading into next year there are some positions of need for the team, as their offensive depth chart sees some possible work needed at backup running back and wide receiver and their defensive depth chart sees possible work needed at defensive end and cornerback.

So, with much still to change in the transfer portal and on the roster this offseason, here is an early look as some possible transfer targets for the Wisconsin football program:

Wisconsin star tight end Jake Ferguson to stay for his fifth season in Madison

The Wisconsin Badger football program got great news today as both inside linebacker Jack Sanborn and tight end Jake Ferguson decided to

Just 20 minutes ago the Wisconsin Badgers got news that star inside linebacker Jack Sanborn decided to stay and play his senior season for the Badgers.

It didn’t take long for one of the program’s other future NFL stars to announce his decision, with tight end Jake Ferguson following Sanborn’s lead and announcing that he will return to Madison for another season.

The tight end finished his junior season with a team-leading 30 catches, 305 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Ferguson and Sanborn arguably were the team’s MVPs on their respective sides of the football and seeing them return for another year is massive news for Wisconsin football’s prospects in 2021.

Wisconsin star LB Jack Sanborn to return for his senior season

Wisconsin Badger star linebacker Jack Sanborn announced today via Twitter that he will be returning to Madison to play his senior season

The 2020 Wisconsin Badger defense was led in the middle by star linebacker Jack Sanborn. Taking over the role after Chris Orr graduated and went to the NFL after the 2019 season, the junior has quickly turned into a star at the position and will soon be playing football on Sundays.

That jump to the next level is going to wait a year, though, as today Sanborn announced via Twitter that he will be returning to Madison for his senior season.

The news is massive for the Wisconsin football program and their defense as they look to return to their winning form in 2021 after a 4-3 2020 campaign.

Report: Wisconsin is the frontrunner to land USC transfer RB, former four-star recruit

USC Sports Illustrated publisher Scott Wolf reported that the Wisconsin Badgers are the front runner to land USC transfer RB Markese Stepp

Today is gameday for the Wisconsin Badgers as they get set to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

With today marking the final day of the team’s 2020 season, the focus hasn’t turned to the 2021 campaign quite yet. However, there was a report from last night to follow as the Badgers look to build their roster for next year.

That is USC Sports Illustrated publisher Scott Wolf noting that Wisconsin “is currently the frontrunner for ex-USC tailback Markese Stepp.”

Stepp was a four-star recruit in the class of 2018 and was ranked as the No. 307 overall prospect, No. 14 running back and No. 3 player from his home state of Indiana.

The now-former USC Trojan entered the transfer portal on Monday after a 45-carry, 165-yard, 3-touchdown 2020 campaign.

Stepp will have sophomore eligibility next season and could provide a valuable boost to the Badger backfield. The Badgers, then, will hope he returns to his form from 2019 when he broke onto the scene with 48 carries, 307 yards, 6.4 yards-per-carry and 3 touchdowns.

If you have any questions about what he could possibly provide for the Badgers, see the thread below.

Although Jalen Berger has shown sky-high potential this season as the leader of the Badger backfield, the addition of a power back like Stepp would be a valuable one—especially if Garrett Groshek doesn’t decide to return next season.

Wolf’s report is all that is out there at this point regarding Stepp’s impending decision so it will be a situation to monitor as the offseason begins.
