Clemson early favorite to win 2021 national championship

Check out the early odds for next year’s College Football Playoff National Championship

Even though the Clemson Tigers failed to defeat the LSU Tigers in this year’s CFP National Championship, the odds are in their favor to bounce back and win the game in 2021.

Sports Betting Dime’s National Championship odds for next season favor Clemson to win it all with +225 odds. Perennial powerhouses Alabama and Ohio State place second and third with odds at +350 and +450, respectively, while defending champions LSU are in fourth at +600.

SBD’s Sasha Paruk had this to say about Clemson’s near-consensus spot atop online sportsbooks.

“The 2021 National Championship futures almost universally favor the Clemson Tigers winning their second title in three years. Dabo Swinney’s team ranges from +175 to +250 in the opening odds at online sportsbooks. That said, defending champion LSU is the chalk at one shop with ludicrously short +100 odds. Don’t take that as a true portent of LSU’s chances to repeat minus Joe Burrow. It’s likely an over-reaction to that particular book taking a beating in last year’s futures market.”

With quarterback Trevor Lawrence returning after two consecutive championship appearances, Clemson has the experience necessary at the game’s most important position to make another deep run. Other prospects like wide receiver Justyn Ross, defensive linemen Justin Foster and Tyler Davis, and linebacker James Skalski stand out as players to watch out for next season.

Ohio State also features a returning starting quarterback in Justin Fields, who put together a historic 2019 campaign to lead the Buckeyes to the playoffs. Cornerback Shaun Wade and wide receiver Chris Olave are among those who will also play big roles for them in 2020.

Though LSU has plenty to celebrate from their fantastic season this year, next year might be difficult to find similar success. Joe Burrow is an obvious major loss, and the departure of key contributors like Grant Delpit, Kristian Fulton and Justin Jefferson will surely hurt them. Plus, with passing game coordinator Joe Brady now the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, the Tigers will find it tough to repeat on their offensive success. Still, standouts like Ja’Marr Chase and Derek Stingley, Jr. will ensure they at least stay competitive.

Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard is returning to school for his senior season instead of entering the 2020 NFL draft

One of the top running back prospects in the country is returning to school for his senior season.

Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard is passing up the 2020 NFL draft to play his senior season for the Cowboys. Hubbard announced his decision via his Twitter Monday.

The 2020 class of running backs is incredibly deep. Returning for his senior season gives Hubbard a chance to refine his game and boost his draft stock even further. A strong performance in 2020 could see him enter the first-round pick conversation heading into the 2021 NFL draft.

Alabama WR DeVonta Smith returning to school for 2020 season

Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith is skipping the 2020 NFL draft, and will return to school for another season

One of the top wide receiver prospects in the country is skipping the draft to return for another season at the collegiate level.

Alabama’s DeVonta Smith will not declare for the 2020 NFL draft, and will instead return to the Crimson Tide for the 2020 season. He announced his decision via social media Monday.

Smith’s decision comes after teammates Tua Tagovailoa, Jerry Jeudy and Xavier McKinney have made their declarations for this year’s draft. Smith joins offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood as top Bama prospects opting to return to school rather than make the early jump to the pros.

An explosive deep threat who made big plays for the Tide all year long, Smith was widely considered the team’s third-best receiver, but he led Alabama with 1,256 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches. A terror after the catch, Smith averaged a whopping 18.5 yards per catch in 2019.

He’ll return as the team’s unquestioned No. 1 receiver in 2020, where he’ll pair with another explosive in Jaylen Waddle to give the Tide another dangerous receiving tandem.

One of the best linebacker prospects in the nation is returning to school instead of making the early jump to the pros.

Alabama’s Dylan Moses is returning to the Crimson Tide for the 2020 season, rather than entering the 2020 NFL draft. He announced his decision via Instagram Monday night.

Widely considered to be a top-10 prospect in the 2020 draft class, Moses missed the entire 2019 season with a knee injury. Though many projected him to still be a first-round pick were he to enter the 2020 draft, Moses is electing to return to school for a chance to finish his college career on a better note.

If he’s able to stay healthy and return to the level of play he enjoyed before his injury, Moses could easily be a top-10 pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Florida State DL Marvin Wilson returning to school for 2020 season

One of the top defensive line prospects in the country, Florida State’s Marvin Wilson is spurning the 2020 NFL draft to return to school

One of the top defensive line prospects in the nation is spurning the pro ranks for one more season at the college level.

Florida State’s Marvin Wilson is returning to school for the 2020 season, instead of entering the 2020 NFL draft. He made his announcement via FSU Football’s official Twitter account Monday.

Listed at 6-5, 311 pounds, Wilson is a massive presence in the middle of FSU’s defensive line, giving the unit a dominant, disruptive anchor that NFL scouts will surely enjoy watching for another year. His return to school will give him a chance to further refine his promising skill set, and could end up making him a first-round pick in 2021.

2021 NFL draft: Battle for No. 1 pick starts with Fiesta Bowl

Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State’s Justin Fields face off in an early preview of the battle for the top pick in the 2021 NFL draft

We’re still more than a year away from the 2021 NFL draft, but this year’s College Football Playoff is giving us an early preview of the top two candidates to go No. 1 overall in that class.

Saturday afternoon, Ohio State and Clemson will battle it out in the Fiesta Bowl for the chance to play for a national title. Leading them will be the two best prospects in the 2021 draft class.

After he torched Alabama in last year’s title game, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence was immediately crowned a future No. 1 pick, albeit two years before he could even be eligible. He’s experienced his rough patches throughout his sophomore season for the Tigers, but still has a rare skill set that should have him firmly planted in that conversation next offseason.

Once buried behind Jake Fromm at Georgia, Justin Fields transferred to Ohio State, replacing first-rounder Dwayne Haskins and leading the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title and a berth in this year’s playoff. His athleticism and versatility and well-documented, but it’s his prowess as a passer, both inside the pocket and when things break down, that will have him challenging Lawrence for the chance to go No. 1 overall in 2021.

Obviously, plenty can change in a year. Both of these talented passers will have to avoid major injury, and continue their development at their current pace to fend off the other in the race to the top of next year’s draft.

But they both have the talent and potential, along with the coaching staff and supporting cast, to end up at the top of the draft board when April 2021 rolls around.

Don’t miss Saturday’s chance to see them both face off with a trip to the national championship on the line.
