QB Matt Barkley
There’s nothing to report from Matt Barkley that’s in the realm of “can he be a No. 1?” No, he’s not pushing Allen at all, but he’s clearly the second-string to Allen and so far in camp, all mentions of Barkley have been he’s… steady. What more would you want from your backup? A guy that’ll steer the ship right when Allen goes down. Speaking of which, that whole false positive COVID-19 testing that kept Allen sideline for a practice? That session saw Barkley take hold of the first-team offense.
Combined with Jake Fromm’s lack of doing anything really spectacular at all with his limited workouts (Allen is getting most reps to prep for the season), Barkley’s stock is up.
WR Duke Williams
Without question, Duke Williams’ stock is up. The thing we’re still pondering is… can he get it up high enough to make Buffalo’s final 53-man roster? It’s going to be a tough climb for Williams, and so far in camp, he’s showed it’s not tough for him to make spectacular catches. He might’ve cooled off over the last day or two, but early in camp, like Davis, Williams used he large frame to make difficult, contested catches look easy. Even if he only uses one hand to do so.
The problem with Williams is that he doesn’t really play special teams much at all. That same problem kept him away from Buffalo’s roster during the 2019 regular season at times as well.
