Spencer Dinwiddie receives Player of the Week consideration for third time

The NBA continues to recognize Spencer Dinwiddie as one of its top performers. He was up for Eastern Conference Player of the Week again.

In the middle of November, Spencer Dinwiddie was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for Week 5 of the 2019-20 season. It was the first time he earned the award.

A week later, Dinwiddie was recognized again by the NBA, but this time he was among the nominees. He lost out to Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Dinwiddie was then among those up for consideration for Eastern Conference Player of the Month for the games played in October and November. Once again, Antetokounmpo won the honor.

But it doesn’t end there. Dinwiddie continues to garner Player of the Week consideration. On Monday, the NBA announced Dinwiddie was an Eastern Conference Player of the Week nominee for Week 7. This time, the winner was Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler.

Since November 18 — the first day of the week Dinwiddie was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week — the Nets point guard has averaged 23.8 points, 7.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. Brooklyn is also 8-3 during the span.

C.J. Prosise expected to take over as Seahawks No. 2 running back

The Seattle Seahawks will turn to C.J. Prosise and Travis Homer with Rashaad Penny (ACL) likely done for the season.

The Seattle Seahawks were dealt a big blow on Sunday night, not only in the win-loss column but also at running back, with the news that Rashaad Penny has a sprained ACL and could miss the rest of the season.

“He got an ACL sprain,” coach Pete Carroll said in his postgame press conference. “We don’t know how serious it is but it’s significant.”

If Penny is out, the Seahawks will continue to rely heavily on Chris Carson to lead the charge out of the backfield. Behind him will be veteran C.J. Prosise and rookie Travis Homer, both whom coach Carroll expects to pick up the slack going forward.

“Both those guys will be part of it,” Carroll commented on 710 ESPN’s Pete Carroll show Monday morning. “Thankfully we have C.J. coming in ready to play. He was able to be active in this game to get him started. But he’s been sitting for awhile. He needs to get going. He’s very capable of helping us, he has a lot of assets that we like in the offense. Numbers-wise we just haven’t been able to get him up. So he’s ready to go.”

Prosise appeared on 11 offensive snaps on Sunday, carrying the ball once for two yards. In seven games this season, Prosise has 14 rushes for 43 yards and a touchdown, along with nine receptions (on 11 targets) for 66 yards out of the backfield.

It is pretty clear based on Carroll’s response that Prosise will be the first man up behind Carson, but he did say Homer will get a chance to carry the ball.

“Homer will be ready,” Carroll continued. “He’s been kind of sitting on the back burner for us. It may mean that he gets the ball a little bit more, we’ll wait and see. [But] I’m really glad that C.J. is available to us.”

More information about Penny’s injury should be available on Monday afternoon, but expect Prosise to take over as Seattle’s number two running back for the rest of the season.

Perry Fewell: Panthers will start Kyle Allen at QB vs. Seahawks

Old habits die hard, though and NFL players and coaches are paid to win games.

The Panthers have been eliminated from the playoff picture for the 2019 season. That inevitability has been obvious for several weeks, but now it’s official thanks to Minnesota’s win over Detroit on Sunday.

Now that they’re totally out for this season, Carolina should turn its attention to the future. Old habits die hard, though and NFL players and coaches are paid to win games. That’s why they’ll continue to roll with Kyle Allen starting at quarterback this week against the Seahawks, per interim head coach Perry Fewell.

While it’s probably true Allen gives Carolina (and Fewell) the best chance to win games, it’s not necessarily the best thing for the team.

Allen has established himself as a solid if not spectacular backup since Cam Newton went on injured reserve. He hasn’t remotely made a case he should be the franchise quarterback of the future. Like most backups, Allen is inconsistent and too prone to committing turnovers.

Allen’s pass protection has been atrocious over the last month and he’s taken 21 sacks during that time. Still, he hasn’t shown enough improvement to move the needle on the QB1 question. In fact, in some ways he’s gotten worse as the season has progressed.

It’s true the rookie Will Grier might not be any better. In fact, he could be even worse based on what we saw during the preseason. However, he deserves a chance to show he can improve at some point this year. Otherwise, the team just completely wasted a third-round draft pick.

This issue might not be settled yet, though. Fewell also told reporters that the QB situation will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. Perhaps if Allen bombs against Seattle Grier will finally get a shot.

Three names to keep an eye out for the offensive coordinator position

Firing Tim Beck, Texas is looking for a new offensive coordinator for the first time in three years. Here are names to keep an eye out for.

For the Longhorns in 2019, the offense was one of the strong suits. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger was fantastic, wide receiver Devin Duvernay was one of the best in the country at his position, and even running back Roschon Johnson – who was originally a quarterback – did a fantastic job for Texas this season. However, as the season went on, something was still missing. Especially in the final few games, the Longhorn offense did not feel like themselves.

Once the game against Texas Tech was done, Tom Herman decided that it was time to make some changes. The Longhorns got rid of Tim Beck as the offensive coordinator, moving him to quarterbacks coach. While Tom Herman has been heavily involved in the offense, it may be time for someone new to take over the reins.

When Herman was hired from Houston in 2017, Beck made the transition over with him. Now, making his first coordinator hire as head coach at Texas, Herman has to get it right. What Texas needs is an outside hire that has had success as an offensive coordinator at another big name school. Here are three names to keep an eye out for the offensive coordinator job.

If the Patriots’ latest videotaping incident sounds familiar, there’s a reason

What could be known as Spygate 2.0 follows a similar opener to the story.

Monday, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor created a firestorm of speculation when stating he was aware of an NFL investigation of the New England Patriots.

The supposed incident leading to an investigation happened over the weekend during Cincinnati’s loss to Cleveland. New England had cameras in a Cleveland press box to shoot a story on a scout, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:

This would seem like a rather innocent hiccup were it not for the surrounding details.

Namely, the initial batch of reports about what occurred in Cincinnati over the weekend sounds quite similar to extensive reporting from ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham on New England’s Spygate transgressions:

Sources with knowledge of the system say an advance scout would attend the games of upcoming Patriots opponents and assemble a spreadsheet of all the signals and corresponding plays. The scout would give it to Adams, who would spend most of the week in his office with the door closed, matching the notes to the tapes filmed from the sideline. Files were created, organized by opponent and by coach. During games, Walsh later told investigators, the Patriots’ videographers were told to look like media members, to tape over their team logos or turn their sweatshirt inside out, to wear credentials that said Patriots TV or Kraft Productions.

This latest thread is only in the beginning stages of being tugged and unraveled. For now, a Bengals scout noticed the Patriots filming in a press box for an internal documentary a week before the two teams link up in Week 15.

With the NFL aware of the issue and investigating, Cincinnati’s next week of prep just found its dominant storyline.
