The Nevada Wolf Pack return to action on Tuesday night as they take on the Texas-Arlington Mavericks out of the Sun Belt Conference 

The Wolf Pack come into this contest against the Mavericks with a 1-1 record after defeating the Loyola Marymount Lions 72-67 on Saturday night. In that contest against the Lions, Nevada point guard Lindsey Drew had another stellar performance.

Drew scored 24 points and tallied nine rebounds and seven assists in the victory over Loyola Marymount. Combine the performance against Loyola Marymount with his performance against Utah in the season opener, Drew is averaging 27.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists. 

Because of Drew’s excellent play in the first two games of the season, he was named the Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday. Outside of Drew, the Wolf Pack are getting production from guard Jazz Johnson who is averaging 18.0 points per game and Nisre Zouzoua who is averaging nine points per game this early in the season.

The Wolf Pack take on a Texas-Arlington team that has a 2-0 record with victories of UT-Dallas and Tulsa. The Mavericks leading scorer is senior forward Jabari Narcis as he is averaging 11 points per game this season. Narcis also leads the team in rebounds and blocks as he is averaging 7.5 rebounds per game and two blocks per game for the Mavericks. 

Outside of Narcis, the Mavericks are a balanced scoring team as they have seven players averaging between eight and 11 points per game. The Wolf Pack will have a challenge in going up against Narcis and the Mavericks on Tuesday night in Reno.

ESPN names Kevin Colbert Steelers MVP of 1st half of season

Kevin Colbert has never been more aggressive than he has been this season.

When you think of team MVP in the NFL, the first person that comes to mind isn’t going to be the general manager. Most think about it from the perspective of a particular player or perhaps even a coach. But when ESPN asked their staff of beat writers to name the midseason MVP of their perspective teams, Pittsburgh Steelers writer Brooke Pryor went another direction with GM Kevin Colbert.

The Week 3 move to trade a 2020 first-round pick for Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was met with skepticism given the Steelers’ uncertain future at quarterback. But Colbert’s big swing is paying off early: Fitzpatrick has four interceptions, including a 96-yard pick-six against the Colts. The former first-round pick has been a game-changer, and Colbert’s move to trade for him on an inexpensive rookie contract will likely continue to pay off.

Colbert has had his busiest offseason/season to date. First he trades away Antonio Brown, then trades up in the 2019 NFL draft to land linebacker Devin Bush and finally made the in-season move to acquire safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

This team is in the thick of the playoff hunt but just imagine where this team would be if quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hadn’t been lost midway through the second game? Colbert might not be coming back after this season if this is the case he’s certainly going out with a bang.

Instant analysis of Seattle’s 27-24 OT victory over San Francisco

The Seahawks and 49ers went into overtime in a Monday night classic, with Seattle prevailing, 27-24, to hand San Francisco their first loss.

In an instant classic that should reignite their rivalry, the Seattle Seahawks escaped with a 27-24 overtime victory over the 49ers on Monday night, handing San Francisco its first loss of the season.

As the clock expired, kicker Jason Myers nailed the game-winner from 42 yards out after his counterpart, Chase McLaughlin of the 49ers, missed a potential game-winner earlier in the extra period. It was the second straight overtime win for the Seahawks, who beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 40-34 in Week 9.

The Seahawks once again got off to a very slow start against San Francisco, quickly going down 10-0 in the first quarter. It almost went very differently, with Shaquill Griffin appearing to pick off Jimmy Garoppolo on the first drive of the game — but a holding penalty on nickel cornerback Jamar Taylor negated the pick and led to a field goal for San Francisco.

Taylor got beaten badly on the following drive, allowing Garoppolo to find Kendrick Bourne for a touchdown to give San Francisco an early 10-0 lead.

The momentum eventually swung back to the Seahawks, however, with Jarran Reed forcing a fumble in the second quarter that was recovered by Jadeveon Clowney, who picked it up and walked into the end zone for his second touchdown of the season.

Seattle nearly scored again right before halftime, but wide receiver DK Metcalf was stripped at the 2-yard line by Jaquiski Tartt, allowing the 49ers to take their 10-7 lead into the break.

The third quarter was mostly uneventful until Garoppolo, while getting hit by linebacker Mychal Kendricks, overthrew Dante Pettis. The ball landed right in the hands of Seattle’s new safety, Quandre Diggs, who returned the interception 44 yards to the 49ers’ 16-yard line.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson found Jacob Hollister in the end zone a few plays later, giving Hollister his third career touchdown — all which have come in the last two games. It was Seattle’s first lead of the game, with 4:37 left in the third quarter.

The Seahawks scored again to end the third on a one-yard touchdown run from Chris Carson. That score was also created by Jadeveon Clowney, who forced a fumble that was recovered by Poona Ford and gave Seattle outstanding field position.

However, San Francisco’s defensive line had tricks up their sleeves as well.  Wilson was sacked, and the ball landed in Germain Ifedi’s arms. He promptly fumbled it away, which allowed DeForest Buckner to pick it up and score a touchdown. A two-point conversion brought the score to 21-18 with 12 minutes to play.

After a San Francisco field goal tied things up, Wilson and the Seahawks marched down the field and scored on a field goal from Myers, who redeemed himself after missing a potential game-winner at the end of regulation last week. But the Seahawks missed a pair of interception opportunities on the ensuing drive, allowing San Francisco to nail a field goal of their own and send the game into overtime.

Seattle got the ball first, but after a handful of magnificent plays — including a third-and-16 conversion to Malik Turner after a highly questionable call in which Wilson was ruled to have been sacked — Wilson threw a red zone interception to Dre Greenlaw that put the 49ers in great field position. It was Wilson’s second interception of the season.

Seattle’s defense stepped up, though, and McLaughlin couldn’t convert his second consecutive 47-yard field goal attempt.

After a pair of failed drives for both sides, the Seahawks turned to Myers once again, and the former Pro Bowler nailed the 42-yard attempt to give San Francisco its first loss of the season and lift Seattle to 8-2.

It wasn’t the prettiest game, with both quarterbacks posting passer ratings below 90, along with myriad penalties, turnovers and injuries, but the Seahawks got the job done when it counted and have given themselves an excellent opportunity to still win the NFC West.

They’ll head into a much-deserved bye week next before taking on the Eagles in Philadelphia on Sunday, Nov. 24.

The Cardinals have three victories over awful teams. The rest of the schedule is difficult, and the only game they appear to have a shot at winning is against Cleveland in the desert Dec. 15. Don’t be surprised if they wind up with a higher pick.

NFC Playoff Picture: Where do the Saints stand after Week 10?

The New Orleans Saints may have lost their Week 10 game with the Atlanta Falcons, but the NFC playoff picture is far from locked in place.

Week 10 delivered plenty of surprises to the NFL, painting the playoff picture in sweeping, sometimes-erratic strokes. It brought big changes for some Super Bowl contenders and a painful reality check for other playoff hopefuls, the New Orleans Saints among them. The Saints may have fallen flat against the Atlanta Falcons, but they weren’t the only favorite to get upset this week. Let’s run through the games that impacted this week’s standings.

Green Bay Packers 24, Carolina Panthers 16

What a game for the Packers, who were able to run often and effectively on what’s been a mostly-strong Panthers defense. Their two-headed attack of Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams combined for 156 rushing yards in a game that saw snow pile up as the afternoon drew on. Green Bay’s defense showed up with several sacks and frequently pressured newly-minted starting Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen, who put up a fight but wasn’t able to clinch a tough win on the road. Christian McCaffrey was effective as ever but ultimately came up short at the goal-line on the game’s final play.

Pittsburgh Steelers 17, Los Angeles Rams 12

The Rams hoped to rally down the stretch after the Jalen Ramsey trade, but his arrival didn’t give them enough juice to defeat the Mason Rudolph-led Steelers. Quarterback Jared Goff has continued to nosedive since signing his huge contract extension in preseason, and the Rams’ season may be sinking too fast for the rest of the team to pull him back up to competence. They’re a distant third-best in the NFC West at 5-4, but theoretically have enough time to bounce back.

Minnesota Vikings 28, Dallas Cowboys 24

This game was all about Dalvin Cook: he picked up 97 rushing yards and 86 receiving yards, giving the Cowboys defense fits throughout their Sunday Night Football matchup. His efforts were instrumental to keeping pressure off mistake-prone quarterback Kirk Cousins and finding a way to win, though Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw for nearly 400 yards in a game that was competitive down to the wire. The NFC East race is as cloudy as ever, which is good news for the Saints, who currently sit above them all in projected playoff seeding.

Seattle Seahawks 27, San Francisco 49ers 24 (OT)

A contender for the game of the year saw the 49ers receive their first loss this season, even if Seattle did its best to lose. Their best defenders (linebackers Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright) each dropped game-winning interceptions late on Monday Night Football, and the Seahawks coaching staff took the ball out of their franchise quarterback’s hands with multiple run-run-pass-punt sequences down the stretch. Still, Russell Wilson found a way to put his team in position to win, even if coach Pete Carroll made an insanely cowardly decision to punt from his own 45-yard line late in overtime. Neither of these teams should feel good about their chances of playing the Saints in the postseason.

NFL Week 10: 26 elite performances

Lamar Jackson continues to stun, Ezekiel Elliott and Saquon Barkley failed to deliver and the Seahawks edged the Niners to complete Week 10.

Christian Kirk had a huge game in the loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was going to take time for Kyler Murray and the young Cardinals’ receiving corps — exempting Larry Fitzgerald — to gel. Murray and Kirk were on the same page Sunday as they connected six times for 138 yards and three TDs. Kirk outdid his fellow Texas A&M WR, Mike Evans, on the other side as the Bucs’ star WR had four grabs for 82 yards in the win.

NFL Week 11 Power Rankings: Upsets rule, and a new team at the top

In the wake of an unlikely trio of upsets, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar assesses the hierarchy of the NFL’s 32 teams.

Some weeks in the NFL, a series of things surprise you. In Week 10, three 1-7 teams posted victories, giving hope to fans of some much-maligned squads.

The Jets beat the Giants, 34-27, as safety Jamal Adams became the sixth player since 2000 to record two quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles and a touchdown in the same game. The Dolphins won their second straight game after an 0-7 start, besting the depleted Colts and proving that, at least to head coach Brian Flores and his players, any talk of tanking was pure bunk.

Then, the Falcons improbably whupped up on the Saints, sacking Drew Brees six times and holding New Orleans under 10 points in New Orleans for the first time since 1973.

None of these teams have realistic playoff hopes this season, but the ability to get your game together for even a short part of the season can provide some compelling narratives.

Steelers vs Browns: Pittsburgh puts out hypothetical Monday practice report

The Steelers put out an estimate participation report for Monday.

Due to the short week of preparation, the Pittsburgh Steelers have a very small window for practice this week. They take on the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night which eliminated any Monday workouts. But this didn’t stop the team from putting out their best guess as to what participation would have been if the team would have worked out on Monday.

The good news is they have running back James Conner listed as a full participant. The team has missed him in the backfield the past two weeks and can only be better with him on the field.

Luka Doncic: Jaylen Brown ‘deserves the contract he got’

You can count Dallas Mavericks point guard Luka Doncic among those who believe that the Boston Celtics are going to the bang for their buck after signing fourth-year swingman Jaylen Brown to a four-year, $115 million contract extension on Oct. 21.

The Mavericks star — or, dare I say, superstar — made the comments shortly after Brown and three-time All-Star Kemba Walker combined for 54 points on Monday, as they took down Doncic’s squad in a nailbiter.

Per the Boston Sports Journal’s Brian Robb, Doncic says that Brown is “a great player and he’s a two-way player. He can play really good defense and really good offense. He’s a great pick up by the Celtics…”

“He deserves the contract he got,” Doncic finishes boldly.

Brown scored 25 points (on 9-16 shooting from the field), leading the team in points until Walker scored 10 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter. He would also add 11 rebounds and three assists for his second-straight double-double of the season.

Past the stat sheet though, Brown as been just as impressive on the screen as he’s been on paper.

He’s been efficient throughout the season with his downhill style, utilizing clever dribble moves, his newfound ambidexterity and a better understanding of what the defense is giving him to enter Monday’s game with a career-high field goal percentage of 52.2.

Defensively, Brown remains alert, aggressive and willing to take the challenge of guarding the toughest player. He’s creating turnovers, helping protect the rim, defending multiple positions and playing impressive on-ball defense.

As Doncic says, he’s a two-way player.

The question of whether or not Brown was deserving of his contract extension (which included $12 million in incentives) was raised by many throughout the NBA world, from analysts to executives. In no sphere was there a consensus decision, though executives appeared more bullish on Brown than the scouts and media, and because Brown had only shown incremental improvement in his third season the skepticism was understandable.

However, work ethic has never been a question with the polymath and that should have earned him the confidence of some outside the Celtics organization, as he’s improved in nearly every area that’s been considered a weakness of his since entering the league.

His handle is tighter. His left hand is smooth. His decision-making is improved. He’s a threat from beyond the arc.

Though players tend to support each other in what they deem a fraternity and there will be those who take Doncic’s comments with a grain of salt, that the Mavs’ face of the franchise supported the decision to give Brown a lucrative contract extension is notable, as Luka is a storied NBA player in just his second season.

The two-time EuroLeague Rising Star, 2018 EuroLeague MVP and last season’s Rookie of the Year, Doncic is already an accomplished globally respected young talent. His endorsement doesn’t change anything for Brown but as they say, game recognizes game.

So Brown is obviously balling.
