Cam Reddish went off for a career-high in Hawks’ loss to the Nets

Reddish took the place of De’Andre Hunter in the starting lineup and turned in his first game with at least 20 points on Wednesday.

Atlanta Hawks first-round pick Cam Reddish scored a career-high 25 points and six rebounds on Wednesday night during a 130-118 home loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

Reddish finished by shooting 10-of-16 from the field, including a career-high four 3-pointers, in 37 minutes of work in place of rookie teammate De’Andre Hunter, who missed the game due to a dislocated right index finger.

The performance was his first game scoring at least 20 points this season, topping his previous high of 17 points on Nov. 20 against the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 10th overall pick has had an up-and-down season for the Hawks and has gone back and forth between starting and coming off of the bench. On Wednesday, though, Reddish showed his potential with his ability to drive the floor and finish after converting a number of tough attempts near the basket.

While the Hawks lost, Reddish going off for a career night was certainly a bright spot for the team after struggling with consistency this season. Reddish will be looking to put together more complete performances and will have the chance to do so next on Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets.

Giants injury report: Evan Engram, Golden Tate return to practice

New York Giants TE Evan Engram (foot) and WR Golden Tate (concussion) returned to practice on Thursday.

The New York Giants were back on the practice field on Thursday, but there was one noticeable, albeit unsurprising absence: rookie quarterback Daniel Jones (ankle).

Despite conspiracy theories that he’s not that badly injured, Jones was unable to practice with his teammates on Thursday, instead riding a stationary bike in a boot while trainers looked on during the portion if practice open to the media.

In addition to Jones, safety Jabrill Peppers (back) was not spotted at practice and tight end Rhett Ellison (concussion) was not participating.

On the other side of the injury front, Thursday saw the return of tight end Evan Engram (foot), wide receiver Golden Tate (concussion), cornerback Corey Ballentine (concussion) and left tackle Nate Solder (ankle).

All five of those players appeared to be practicing in full and with the sole exception of Ellison, appear poised to make their return on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Below is the official injury report released by the Giants:

Full participant: WR Golden Tate (concussion)

Limited participant: TE Evan Engram (foot), LT Nate Solder (ankle), CB Corey Ballentine (concussion)

Non-participant: QB Daniel Jones (ankle), Rhett Ellison (concussion), S Jabrill Peppers (back) and DE Chris Peace (knee)

Prediction

Bruins 5, Blackhawks 2

Moneyline (ML)

The BRUINS (-223) are currently the biggest favorite on the entire Thursday slate. With Boston’s 12-0-4 home record and Chicago dropping four of its last five games, it’s clear to see why the B’s are so heavily favored. Plus, they’re 18-2-4 as a favorite this season. Backing Boston is our pick here.

A $10 bet with Boston results in a $4.48 profit with an outright win for the Bruins.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Bruins are just 15-13 ATS while the Blackhawks are 15-12. However, Boston is 4-1 ATS in its last five meetings at night against Chicago. Taking Boston (-1.5, +115) is a profitable play as it pays $11.50 on a $10 bet.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-150) is worth a small play. The Over has connected in three of their last four head-to-head matchups. In those four games, the teams combined for 30 goals (7.5 per contest). In their last five games, the Bruins have averaged 3.6 goals per game, while the Blackhawks have allowed 3.4 goals per contest. It is why we are backing the Over here.

Placing a $10 bet here will earn a bettor a $6.67 profit with a total of six or more goals scored.

Kyler Murray’s Sunday began with forgotten AirPods, ended with ‘disgusting feeling’

“I left my AirPods on the way to stadium, and it was just that kind of day,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “I think it transferred to the game.”

The Arizona Cardinals lost to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday 34-7. It was their worst performance of the season overall and the worst game that rookie quarterback Kyler Murray had all season.

Would you believe that his AirPods had something to do with it? It seems they were the cause of the bad day.

“I left my AirPods on the way to stadium, and it was just that kind of day,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “I think it transferred to the game.”

He said he realized he had left them about five minutes into his ride to the stadium. “It was tough. That was a tough morning.”

So the day began out of rhythm. The game went the same way. He had his worst game as a pro. The Cardinals fell behind 20-10 in the first half and 34-0 before getting a late touchdown.

“I was trying everything in my power to stop it mentally and externally, but it was just a bad day,” he said. “It kind of showed from start to finish.”

He also compared it to how he played in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. The difference is in that game, he got things turned around and brought the Cardinals back to tie the game and take it to overtime.

The way things ended against the Rams didn’t sit well with him.

“Losing is losing, but that last game was a different type of losing,” he said. “It’s just a disgusting feeling. I’m sure you were disgusted watching it. I was disgusted being in it. It’s not a good feeling. You just don’t want to have that anymore, so just try your hardest not to allow that to happen again.”

He has moved on from it. He is locked in for Week 14, but he has learned from the loss.

“It can’t happen again. I think any competitor understands that’s just not acceptable. That’s not what we want here, and it shouldn’t be. That’s not the standard here.”

Nate Kaczor says the Redskins’ special teams haven’t reached their ceiling yet

The Redskins have found some real success on special teams this year, but the coordinator says they still have much to improve on.

In back-to-back weeks now, the Washington Redskins have both notched a win and had a player named as the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Not a bad run to be on.

However, the Redskins special teams’ coach, Nate Kaczor, says that they haven’t reached their potential yet. So far this year in the kick return game, they’ve had a 91-yard return for a touchdown by Steven Sims Jr., as well as an 85-yard return that was called back by penalties. If you ask Kaczor, they still have another level that they can get to before all is said and done.

“It’s not like it just started happening, but penalties and consistency and ball handling are always elements that you’re striving to get better at,” Kaczor said, via The Athletic. “I don’t think those are the elements where you would ever say you’re good enough at.”

Kaczor went on to discuss just how hard it is for blockers to avoid penalties on kick returns because the play is always happening behind them, and they often don’t know which way the runner is cutting to get around their man. Still, avoiding a foul on such momentum-shifting plays is imperative for team success, and that’s definitely something that Washington can get better at.

Yes, Tom Brady is washed but that just means he’s Kirk Cousins now

Tom Brady could still be effective … if he had any help.

I think just about everyone had the same question after the Patriots were blown out in Houston on Sunday night: Is Tom Brady washed? Like for real this time?

And I think all of us non-Patriots fans — and the segment of the fanbase that isn’t delusional — came away with the same answer: Yes.

Sort of.

Kinda.

Probably.

Of course, everyone is hesitant to come out and say he’s cooked because we’ve seen it backfire so often. But, statistically speaking, Brady has been one of the worst quarterbacks in the league over the last few months. The 42-year-old ranks 19th in QBR. He ranks 29th in completion percentage. 28th in yards-per-attempt. 26th in success rate. The results have been ugly.

Sure, you can blame the lack of production on his supporting cast, but even the stats that Brady is mostly responsible for paint a bleak picture. He ranks 26th in on-target throw percentage, per Sports Info Solutions. His completion percentage over expectation is sitting at -0.4%, which also ranks 26th per Next Gen Stats. That means Brady is completing fewer passes than we should expect based on the separation of his receivers, the pressure he’s facing, the length of his attempts as well as other factors. You cannot put this all on his teammates. The offense, as a whole, is bad. The numbers say Brady is making it worse.

But here’s the good news for Patriots fans: This isn’t some recent development. The Brady we’re seeing in 2019 looks a lot like the Brady we saw in 2018 and we all know how that season ended. His rate stats were better, but the team around him was also better. The stats that he actually controls, like on-target throw percentage and CPOE, are essentially the same as they were a season ago.

And now the bad news: Last season, the Pats coaching staff was eventually able to devise an approach that took a lot of the playmaking burden off Brady. New England started utilizing more heavy personnel, which improved their play-action game and helped to create mismatches that Brady could easily exploit. As I wrote a few weeks ago, that strategy hasn’t been very effective in 2019.

I suggested the Patriots could go back to the spread sets they thrived out of at the end of the last decade, but I don’t know if that’s even a viable solution with Brady lacking the precision that allowed him to dink-and-dunk his way down the field every drive.

When we’re trying to figure out if a quarterback is washed up, the first thing we look at is arm strength. Well, the signs were there against the Texans that Brady’s arm is weaker. There were plenty of ugly throws, but these ones stood out to me.

This deep stop route gave Brady all sorts of trouble. He put a lot on this throw and still forced his receiver to track back a few extra yards and make a diving catch out of bounds.

This corner route is a throw Brady used to make with ease. Now he’s sailing it.

How about this pass up the seam to Julian Edelman? It’s a touchdown, but Brady leaves it short and turns what should be a wide-open catch for his receiver into a contested one.

Brady’s deep ball now seems to max out at 50 yards. Anything over 50 and the ball just dies in the air. His receivers have given him opportunities deep, and Brady has not been able to cash in.

But the deep ball problems should be the least of the Patriots’ concerns. It’s the lack of precision on the short passes that have really limited the offense. On quick passing attempts (those that come on dropbacks of three or fewer steps), Brady’s numbers are down across the board, per Sports Info Solutions. His completion percentage is down four percentage points. His on-target throw percentage is down five. And his passer rating has dropped a full 10 points.

The advanced metrics are even worse: On drops of three steps or fewer, Brady has compiled just 0.2 expected points added, per Sports Info Solutions. That’s for the whole season. Lamar Jackson is averaging 0.23 EPA per ATTEMPT.

When Brady is at his best, he’s hitting his receivers in stride and setting them up to do damage after the catch. Well, that’s not happening in 2019. We’re seeing more throws like this, where the placement forces Mohamad Sanu to turn back to catch the ball, which allows the defender to take him down short of the line to gain.

Here, a slightly off-target throw forces Edelman to go to the ground instead of picking up more yardage.

These still go down as completions, but yards are being left on the field. As a result, the Patriots are averaging just 4.79 yards after the catch, which ranks 27th in the NFL. That’s Brady’s lowest ranking since the league started tracking the stat in 2006.

In that regard, Brady isn’t helping out his receivers, but that goes both ways. Outside of Edelman, nobody is able to get open. First-round pick N’Keal Harry evaporates against any press coverage. Mohamad Sanu can’t run away from anybody. Rookie Jakobi Meyers looks lost for the most part. Benjamin Watson is so old that he goes by the name Benjamin.

It doesn’t take Bill Belichick to devise a gameplan to stop this group. The Texans just bracketed Edelman all night and forced Brady to go to his second and third reads. In the past, that would not have been a problem, but Brady is starting to look like a 42-year who doesn’t want to get hit.

And this shows up in his numbers against pressure. These numbers tend to fluctuate for all QBs year-to-year, but Brady has always performed well under pressure. In 2019, he’s been one of the worst quarterbacks in the league under pressure. Only Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton and Mason Rudolph have a lower total EPA this season.

It appears plyometrics start to lose their effectiveness around age 42 because Brady is not moving like he used to.

This just doesn’t look the same. When Brady has struggled in the past, it was more about what was going on around him and you could still see that elite quarterback on tape. That’s no longer the case. It’s a crappy offense and Brady looks like he belongs in it.

At this point, Brady is a lot like Kirk Cousins. Give him a good offensive line and some open receivers to throw to, and he’ll make the right play. But ask him to elevate an underwhelming supporting cast, and you’ll get some ugly results.

Unless the Patriots go full heel and sign the seemingly untouchable Antonio Brown, there are no more personnel moves to be made. This supporting cast isn’t getting any better, so it’s up to the coaches to come up with an answer for the offense. Belichick and Josh McDaniels figured it out last season and won a Super Bowl. Maybe they’ll do it again and get Brady back on track before the playoffs.

But what if they don’t? With Brady seemingly headed for free agency after the season, we may have seen the last of No. 12 playing at a high level in a Patriots uniform.

LeBron James responds to criticism from Jazz announcers who accused him of being ‘disrespectful’

LeBron James responds to criticism from Utah Jazz announcers who accused him of being ‘disrespectful’ during Los Angeles Lakers win on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Utah Jazz by 25 points on Wednesday to improve their record to 19-3 on the season. LeBron James recorded a double-double during the 121-96 victory while scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in only 29 minutes of work. But while spending time on the bench in the fourth quarter–after the Lakers had built a 23-point lead heading into the final period–the Jazz television broadcast team took offense to the way LeBron was supporting his teammates out on the floor.

During the Utah broadcast of the game, the Jazz announcers accused James of being “disrespectful” for celebrating on the sidelines without his shoes. What they seemed to simply overlook was the fact that LeBron had given his shoes to a couple of young Jazz fans in attendance after confirming with his coaching staff that he would not be returning to the game.

Below is a video of some of that commentary during the broadcast.

At other points throughout the final minutes of the game, the Utah announcers added the following according to Trevor Lane from Lakers Nation.

In a direct response to the criticism, LeBron posted the following on his Instagram account this morning.

“Imagine doing your job at the highest level to where you’re not needed anymore, giving your shoes to a lil girl and boy who you inspire and hoped you made proud that night, then cheering on your teammates cause you love seeing them succeed more than yourself only to be criticized while doing it.

“People it’s the world we live in and you can’t let it ever stop you from your purpose in life. Negativity, bad energy, hate, envy, etc etc will try to bring you down throughout your journey and it’s up to you on how you handle it. I handle it by simply saying “Thank You” with a 😁 on my face and continue to push forward while doing it! LIVE.LAUGH.LOVE 🙏🏾❤️👑”
