Prediction

Nuggets 120, Pelicans 99

Moneyline (ML)

The Nuggets (-500) are heavily favored to give the Pelicans a lump of coal on the final game of the Christmas Day schedule. But if you want to keep your stocking full, don’t risk five times your return, and bet the spread.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Nuggets to win outright returns a profit of $2.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The NUGGETS (-8.5, -115) are 0-5 ATS in the past five meetings the Pelicans (+8.5, -106), so that might give some trend bettors pause. However, consider the fact the Nuggs have heavy juice, and the books are begging you to take the Pellies at plus-money. That tells you the books want you on NOLA. Be smart and slam the home side. It’s easily winning by double digits.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The total of 220.5 is going to be too close for my liking. I expect the Nuggets to build a gigantic lead into the fourth quarter and then power down. If I had a lean, I’d go ever so slightly under (220.5), but not enough to risk any of my holiday lettuce. Of course, watch the number up to tip-off for any movement.

Sean McVay opens up about relationship with Andrew Whitworth

Sean McVay praised Andrew Whitworth for being a “special individual” and a great player.

Andrew Whitworth helped usher in a new era of Rams football in 2017 when he signed as a free agent, coming over from the Bengals where he spent the first decade of his career. Still playing at a high level, he joined Los Angeles and solved one of the team’s biggest problems at left tackle.

He did so with a new coach in Sean McVay, who was at the forefront of the Rams’ rebuild. Whitworth and McVay spent the last three years together in L.A., giving the Rams a unique relationship between a player who was older than his coach.

Whitworth, 38, is in the final year of his contract with the Rams and with the season coming to a close, McVay opened up about how much Whitworth means to him not just as a player, but as a person on and off the field.

“He’s meant a lot. He’s a special individual. Like I’ve said before, one of the most empathetic individuals I’ve ever met in my life. I think that’s a rare quality, I think it’s a great quality for any leader to possess,” McVay said, before getting a jab in at the veteran. “He’s got a great wisdom – he has been playing for 40 years, so he’s got a lot of experiences to draw on. It’s a relationship that I certainly cherish. He’s helped me a lot as your still getting familiar with how to best handle this role and navigate through the things that occur on a daily basis. Somebody like him has been instrumental and I think when you look at when we first got here as a staff, working with Les and his group, for him to represent – he and Robert Woods, really – your first two free agent signings, it’s hard to find two better representatives of what it looks like to go find the right kinds of guys that are wired in all the right ways and are also great competitors.”

Whitworth said he intends to play another season in 2020, but it remains to be seen if that will be with the Rams or another team. Los Angeles doesn’t have much money to spend this offseason and it has a lot of players to pay, so Whitworth might be out of the front office’s price range.

One thing’s for sure, though: Whitworth will be missed if he doesn’t return to the Rams next season, in the locker room, in the community and on the field.

Justin Fields injury update: Ohio State QB says his knee is ‘at 80 to 85 percent right now’

The Buckeyes quarterback might not be at full strength for the College Football Playoff semifinal.

There’s a chance Justin Fields won’t be at full strength when No. 2 Ohio State takes on No. 3 Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal game at the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday.

The Buckeyes quarterback sprained his MCL in Ohio State’s win over Penn State on November 23, and he then said he aggravated it in his team’s win against Michigan the following week. Fields played through the injury in the Big Ten championship game against Wisconsin, but he’s not where he hoped to be with the College Football Playoff semifinal game just days away.

The Heisman Trophy finalist spoke to reporters Wednesday ahead of the Fiesta Bowl and said:

“My knee’s probably not like I want it to be right now. But I think with treatment every day and just resting it every day, hopefully, it will be better by the game. …

“I definitely thought I would be closer to 100 percent. If I gave a percentage, I’d probably be at 80 or 85 right now. So yeah, but I’m just going to hope and pray I feel better by game day really.”

Fields said he has a smaller knee brace that he plans to wear — it’s the same one he said he wore in the Michigan game — but added that he also has a larger one just “in case anything happens” in the playoff game.

Although he said he’s been participating in the team’s bowl game practices, his mobility is limited. He continued:

“I try to get as much reps as possible. Really, I would say I haven’t really missed any reps in terms of just getting in there and playing. But I just can’t really move like I want to.”

The Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Fields has thrown for 40 touchdowns and just one interception so far this season, and in five games, he threw four touchdowns. He has a 67.5 completion percentage (No. 16 nationally) and has thrown for 2,953 yards (No. 26) while adding 471 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

Evaluating the Buckeyes, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney called the two teams are “literally mirror images” of each other. The Playstation Fiesta Bowl is Saturday at 8 p.m. ET in Glendale, Arizona.

Outside linebacker Sharif Finch’s one-day stint with the Cincinnati Bengals has officially come to an end.

The team waived the former Tennessee Titan on Tuesday due to a failed physical after originally signing him on Monday.

Finch saw action in eight games over the 2019 season, recording two sacks and 10 solo tackles.

Finch was set to fill the spot of A.J. Greene, who had been placed on Injured Reserve.

The Bengals will look for a new replacement for Greene as they prepare to face the Cleveland Browns at 12 p.m. CST on Sunday in Cincinnati.

Top MMA fighters of the decade, 2010-2019: Daniel Cormier ranked No. 3

Daniel Cormier’s run in the 2010s included some of the biggest fights in UFC history, multiple title reigns and just two losses in 25 bouts.

The 2010s, arguably the most important decade in the history of mixed martial arts, is coming to a close. One reason why the past 10 years have been so pivotal to the sport is the sheer talent that exists across all divisions – men and women, from flyweight (which didn’t even exist until February 2012) to heavyweight. Simply put, the number of great fighters to grace cages and rings across the world never has been higher.

Here at MMA Junkie, we’ve put together a staff-wide, composite ranking of the top 10 fighters of the past decade, which we’ll reveal Monday-Friday until Dec. 27. Today, we reflect on No. 3: Daniel Cormier.

****

[autotag]Daniel Cormier[/autotag] had a meaningful impact on two weight classes over the past 10 years. He might not go down as the best ever in either division, but when combining his overall efforts, it’s obvious he belongs high in the discussion of all-time greats.

When the decade began, Cormier was still somewhat lost. His pursuit of Olympic wrestling greatness was cut short in 2008 when kidney failure stemming from an extreme weight cut prematurely ended his dreams. It effectively spelled the end of his amateur wrestling career, too, but when one door closed, another opened.

Cormier was already five months removed from his 30th birthday when he made his MMA debut. That’s well beyond the starting point for most, especially those who make it to the highest level of the sport. Still, though, it didn’t stop him from being tremendously successful.

With the exception of his first professional fight in September 2009, Cormier’s MMA run to this point has come after the turn of the decade. He won the King of the Cage heavyweight belt in just his fourth bout, and while he was seemingly rotund for his 5-foot-11 frame, it was evident he possessed all the talent and tenacity to thrive.

After building up more experience in regional promotions, as well as the now-defunct Strikeforce organization, Cormier’s first big break came in September 2011. He was inserted into the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix semifinals as an alternate, fighting the fearsome Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, who was fresh off a memorable thrashing of Fedor Emelianenko.

[lawrence-related id=335044,241449,168825]

It was only Cormier’s 10th fight, and many believed it to be too much, too soon. Not Cormier, though. He knocked out Silva in less than four minutes to advance to the tournament final, where he would meet Josh Barnett.

At the time, Barnett, the former UFC heavyweight champion, had gone six years unbeaten and nearly four times the number of fights. Cormier didn’t care, as he controlled Barnett for much of five rounds to win a convincing decision and the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix title, opening the eyes of many that he was a unique entity.

The UFC’s purchase of Strikeforce would see Cormier make his octagon debut just two fights later in April 2013. He beat former champ Frank Mir in his promotional debut at UFC on FOX 7, then would handle divisional mainstay Roy Nelson in his sophomore effort at UFC 166.

Despite racking up a 13-0 record at heavyweight, Cormier would switch weight classes after beating Nelson, mainly because his good friend and longtime teammate, Cain Velasquez, held the UFC heavyweight title, and they refused to fight.

But it was also because of Jon Jones’ dominance over the light heavyweight division. Some serious bad blood had formed between Cormier and Jones, stemming from their first interaction at UFC 121 in October 2010. And after picking up two wins following his drop to 205 pounds, Cormier got a championship showdown with “Bones” at UFC 182 in January 2015.

[jwplayer sL1uSKKv-RbnemIYZ]

After one of the most personal build-ups in UFC history, Jones would hand Cormier his first career loss by unanimous decision. It was Cormier’s initial encounter with defeat after more than five years of fighting, and while emotional, he didn’t let it define him.

Cormier would get the UFC light heavyweight title in his very next fight. Jones’ infamous hit-and-run case in 2015 caused him to be stripped of UFC gold, making way for Cormier to beat up and choke out Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 in May 2015.

The fact Cormier didn’t take the title directly off Jones put something of an asterisk around his reign, but that’s not his fault. He defended against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 (and landed the most significant strikes in light heavyweight title-fight history), then was booked to rematch Jones at UFC 200 in July 2016.

A failed Jones drug test result that came in during fight week derailed plans for the rematch, though, and Cormier would go on to beat Anderson Silva, who stepped in on two days’ notice at the milestone event.

Cormier then defended his title against “Rumble” Johnson in a rematch at UFC 206, finally setting the stage for him to face Jones a second time in one of the biggest fights in UFC history. Jones stopped Cormier by third-round knockout, but the result was overturned to a no contest within weeks when another drug test mishap disqualified Jones from competition yet again.

The ensuing fights is where Cormier truly cemented his legacy. He defended the light heavyweight title that was handed back after Jones’ suspension when he beat Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220 in January 2018, then a historic opportunity came along.

With Velasquez removed from the heavyweight title scene, Cormier returned to the division where he started his career with the chance to obtain a second belt. He moved up and challenged Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 in July 2018, scoring a first-round knockout to join Conor McGregor as the only fighters in UFC history to hold multiple belts simultaneously.

Although Amanda Nunes and Henry Cejudo followed in attaining “champ-champ” status, Cormier set himself apart from those two and McGregor with his next move. With multiple 205-pound title defenses already on his resume, Cormier managed to successfully defend his heavyweight belt against Derrick Lewis at UFC 230 in November 2018.

That victory over “The Black Beast” made Cormier the only fighter in not just the UFC – but any major organization – to defend belts in multiple divisions. That boosted his legacy overboard in terms of the greatest of his era.

Unfortunately the decade closed on a low note for Cormier. He would lose the heavyweight belt back to Miocic in a rematch at UFC 241, succumbing to a fourth-round knockout after controlling the action up to that point.

Losing to Miocic – who is arguably the greatest heavyweight ever – doesn’t take away from Cormier’s legacy, though. Just the same as the defeat to Jones doesn’t, either.

Cormier’s body of work outside of those losses was nothing short of immaculate and one-sided, and that’s to make no mention of his importance to the sport outside of the octagon.

There was certainly some ungraceful moments for Cormier, from his press conference brawl with Jones inside the lobby go the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to the many unsavory things the rivals said to each other over the years. Outside of that, though, Cormier has been the perfect ambassador for the sport, molding himself as the opposite of the “stereotype” MMA fighter and leaving a trail of selfless actions too long to detail.

He’s also educating the next generation of fight fans week after week. Cormier is one of the best commentators and fight analysts in the game, and once he retires following his trilogy bout with Miocic in 2020, he will continue to teach the world why this sport is so special.

There are many layers to Cormier’s legacy, but it holds up with anyone in the sport’s history. When distinguishing the elite of the past decade alone, though? He easily deserves his No. 3 spot among MMA Junkie’s top fighters of the decade.

Titans S Kevin Byard preparing to face the Texans’ starters

Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard expects to play a full strength Houston Texans team in their Week 17 showdown.

Coach Bill O’Brien expects to play his full Houston Texans roster against the Tennessee Titans in their season finale on Sunday. Titans coach Mike Vrabel expects the same, so do his players.

“I mean, for sure,” Titans safety Kevin Byard told Titans media on expecting to see Deshaun Watson and DeAndre Hopkins on Sunday. “We are definitely going to go into the game preparing for it, regardless if those guys are banged-up or how they feel about the season and stuff like that.”

The Texans currently have the fourth-seed in the AFC playoffs. If the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, they will stay there. Houston will likely know of the result before they play, as they play at 3:25 pm CT compared to the Chiefs at noon.

If the Chiefs win, Sunday’s bout between the divisional rivals could be meaningless. However, being that the two are rivals, Byard expects the Texans to go at full-power. If Tennessee loses, their playoff chances as an 8-7 will evaporate. One can expect the Texans wanting to control their rival’s destiny.

“I mean, they are our divisional rival, so I anticipate those guys coming in and trying to beat us and try to spoil us not getting into the playoffs,” Byard said. “So we have to go into this game like it is a playoff game and do everything we possibly can.”

If the Chiefs win, the Texans should theoretically use the week to rest their key players. At Week 17 of the NFL season, no player is 100%, even if they are off of the injury report. With the Texans playing a week later in the playoffs, likely against the 10-5 Buffalo Bills, they could use all the rest they can get.

Nonetheless, the coaches of both teams and the players don’t see it in the same light.

Giants continue to rise in USA TODAY power rankings

The New York Giants continued their recent rise in the latest edition of the USA TODAY power rankings.

It wasn’t that long ago that the New York Giants had completely bottomed out in the USA TODAY power rankings, taking over the No. 32 spot in embarrassing fashion.

However, that was short-lived. The Giants made a several-spot climb a week ago after defeating the Miami Dolphins in Week 15, and are once again on the rise following a Week 16 victory over the Washington Redskins.

Although still near the bottom of the league, the Giants were bumped up one spot to No. 26 overall.

Saquon Barkley has now touched the ball 601 times in his NFL career and has yet to lose a fumble.

Comparatively, the Redskins remained in place at No. 28 overall, while the Dallas Cowboys fell one spot to No.15 overall and the Philadelphia Eagles rose four spots to No. 12 overall.

In the event you care to know, the New York Jets also rose two spots to No. 21 overall.

The Baltimore Ravens remain in place at No. 1 overall, while the Cincinnati Bengals appear permanently cemented at No. 32 overall.

Tom Brady on Spygate 2: ‘People are making a lot of nothing’

“I’ve not thought about it since I heard about it. I think a lot of people are making a lot of nothing.”

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has done his best to downplay the conversation surrounding Spygate 2.

The Patriots admitted to videotaping the Cincinnati Bengals’ sideline from the press box in Week 14. New England said it broke the rules inadvertently while filming for a documentary series on advance scouts. The NFL has launched an investigation to see if the team’s football operations had any hand in the recordings, which would inconsistent with what the Patriots have claimed about the incident.

“I’ve put it out of my mind,” Brady said Monday night, as transcribed by NESN.com. “I’ve not thought about it since I heard about it. I think a lot of people are making a lot of nothing. … We are thinking about other things. We’re trying to focus on winning games. As a player, my job is to go out there and do the best I can do and eliminate as many distractions. A lot of people are trying to make this a distraction for us and we’re not going to allow that to happen.”

LeBron James and Lakers looking to avenge opening night vs. Clippers

The Los Angeles Lakers will face off against the Clippers with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George for the first time.

LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers are looking for a better performance than they had in their opener against their crosstown rivals, Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers. For the first time this season, the Lakers will get a look at the Clippers with both Leonard and fellow star forward Paul George, who was recovering from shoulder surgery at the time of the Oct. 22 opener.

Both teams are also coming off of losses, with the Lakers coming into Wednesday’s Christmas Night showdown having lost three straight games for the first time this season. It will also be interesting to see how the Lakers adjust their strategy or how much they adjust at all from their last meeting.

With the Clippers length across every position, they can disrupt passing lanes better than most teams. This often leads teams to abandon their traditional offense, but the good news for the Lakers is that they aren’t a traditional offense. They just need to find a little bit more balance than they did in the opener.

The Lakers posted up 27 times in the first meeting, which was probably a little overkill. The Lakers post up more than every team in the league except San Antonio according to Synergy Sports and they do it at the second-most efficient mark in the league. It will be a part of their strategy and perhaps a heavy part of it against the Clippers. But they do need to get more out of their perimeter players if they are going to win.

Danny Green had his highest-scoring game of the season in the opener but the Lakers had basically no other help at guard, in part due to choices made by Frank Vogel. Alex Caruso was out of the rotation to start the season and he’s become a crucial role player for the Lakers while Rajon Rondo was also injured in the opener.

The Lakers are an unconventional team and that has served them very well this season. But having a little bit better guard play as well as better play from their centers than they got in the opener will be crucial to evening their season series with the Clippers.
