CME Group Tour Championship notes: Nelly Korda rides back-nine 31 into contention

Nelly Korda got on a run Friday at the CME Group Tour Championship to vault up the leaderboard and into contention.

What’s been a strange year for everyone because of the coronavirus pandemic got stranger for Nelly Korda  a couple of months ago.

The 22-year-old cracked her back during the KPMG Women’s LPGA Championship in October, and it went into spasm. Korda made sure she took off enough time to be completely healed, then returned for the U.S. Women’s Open in Houston, missing the cut with a pair of 73s.

“It was more of like my feel wasn’t really there,” she said. “At the end of the day, no one really pays attention I think to like, ‘Oh, she was injured.’ They pay attention to the score.

“For me to step back and say, OK, my team knows I was rusty and I didn’t play well. It’s OK. You’re going to have bad tournaments. Just focus on the upcoming one and do as well as you can.”

Korda has done just that during the CME Group Tour Championship so far. After playing her first 11 holes Thursday at 2 over, she has played the last 25 holes in 7 under to vault up the leaderboard and into contention.

Korda got an assist from her dad, former tennis star Petr Korda.

“It was really nice to roll in some putts,” she said. “I wasn’t putting too well (Thursday), but my dad — behind the fence — saw me putt on the putting green after my round and helped me out a little bit.

“So that really helped today.”

Korda hasn’t had any hiccups with her back so far.

“My caddie was funny,” she said. “I would hit like – I would go after a shot like in the rough and my caddie was like, ‘Are you OK?’ Yeah, I’m fine.”

Korda’s play at Tiburón isn’t a surprise. She’s been in the top 10 in each of her three appearances in Naples.

Still, she was able to put together a 5-under 31 on the back nine, starting out in chilly temperatures.

“It was a little nippy,” Korda said. “Not going to lie, I didn’t feel my fingers on the range. I stayed aggressive, hit some really close shots, and capitalized on them.”

Korda’s happy that temperatures will warm up into the upper 70s and near 80 over the weekend.

“I’m so excited,” she said. “I’m a Florida girl. I do not like this. I like fall fashion, but I do not like playing golf in this kind of weather.”

Henderson rallies into top 20

Miromar Lakes resident Brooke Henderson continued her comeback from a triple-bogey on her second hole Thursday, shooting a 4-under 68 to tie for 16th. That included an eagle Friday on the par-5 17th.

“No. 17 was a really nice bonus,” Henderson said. “It was up and over a ridge, and it was a long one.”

Henderson, who is from Canada, said she just got into trouble after a bad tee shot on the triple-bogey.

“I felt like I battled back pretty well (Thursday), getting it back to 1 over,” Henderson said. “I was sort of happy at the end of the day, and happier now to get a solid round.”

Henderson, even before she bought a place here, always had the more-than-supportive Canadians in Southwest Florida come out. Like everywhere this year, the fans are missed, but Henderson and the Canadians had their own connection.

“There’s always tons of Canadians down here supporting me,” she said. “I definitely miss them this year, but hopefully next year things will get back to a little more normal.”

More than a tough start

Nanna Koerstz Madsen shot a 6-under 66 to move into second place Thursday, and said she had no expectations.

“I just want to go out and play and see if I can do good mentally,” Madsen said.

That didn’t happen at the start of Friday’s second round. Madsen bogeyed No. 2, double-bogeyed No. 3, quadruple-bogeyed No. 4, and bogeyed No. 5. She parred No. 6, and ended up playing the final 13 holes in 3 under.

CB Sidney Jones the lone player to surface on Jags’ final injury report for Week 15

The Jags had one lone player on their Week 15 injury report and that was starting CB Sidney Jones, which could be a big deal.

The Jacksonville Jaguars only had one player to surface on their final injury report for Week 15, but it was an important one. That player was starting cornerback Sidney Jones IV, who is still dealing with an Achilles injury.

Jones’ listing on the injury report puts the Jags in a tough spot at cornerback. They are already without starter C.J. Henderson, who went on injured reserve last month. They also placed Tre Herndon on their Reserve/COVID-19 list and practice squad cornerback Josh Nurse went on the list today.

As of now, the Jags could end up with three rookies as their top-2 cornerbacks for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens in Luq Barcoo and Josiah Scott. Barcoo has started on the outside and could do so again, while the Jags could probably go with Scott, who has played in five games, in the nickel. They also have corners Greg Mabin and Brandon Rusnak on the active roster and have Quenton Meeks and Nathan Meadors on their practice squad.

Luckily for the Jags, their lack of cornerbacks could have a minimal impact as the Ravens are ranked 32nd in passing. Then again, it feels like the veteran experience of a receiver like Willie Snead IV and the speed of Marquise Brown could provide issues for a very young group.

Former LSU commit flips to Notre Dame

Khari Gee had been committed to the defending champion LSU Tigers since May.

Khari Gee had been committed to the defending champion LSU Tigers since May. On Friday, the longtime LSU commit flipped his commitment to Notre Dame and signed with the Fighting Irish.

The three-star safety appeared solid with Tigers for much of the season, but with the additions of higher-rated safeties such as Derrick Davis Jr. and Sage Ryan, Gee began to look around, and Notre Dame kept the pressure on Gee.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Gee played his high school football at the Woodward Academy in Atlanta.

In addition to Davis Jr. and Ryan, the Tigers also added Matthew Langlois in the 2021 recruiting class.

The early signing period ends on Friday, Dec. 18, after a three-day window. Players who did not sign must now wait until national signing day in February.

LSU currently has 21 commitments for the 2021 class, with 19 signing this week. Raesjon Davis and Saivion Jones are expected to sign in February, and the Tigers remain in the mix for other high-profile players.

LSU remains at No. 4 in the 247Sports composite team rankings for 2021.

MSU Football QB Rocky Lombardi, LB Jeslord Boateng enter transfer portal

Two more Michigan State players entered the transfer portal on Friday afternoon. That brings the total of transfers this year up to nine.

The transfer portal giveth and the transfer portal taketh away. Michigan State landed a new starting running back and possibly a new starting quarterback this week from the portal, and also lost two players early on Friday in similar fashion. Later on Friday, two more Spartans entered the transfer portal: quarterback Rocky Lombardi and linebacker Jeslord Boateng.

The news on Lombardi was first reported by Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press while Boateng’s transfer was reported by Rainer Sabin, also of the Free Press.

This is certainly major news regarding Lombardi, but not at all shocking. After showing some flashes, Lombardi was never able to find enough consistency on the field to take control of the starting job. With the emergence of Payton Thorne and the addition of Anthony Russo from Temple, along with recruit Hampton Fay coming to town, Lombardi started to find himself near the bottom of a crowded QB depth chart.

Boateng, a former 3-star recruit in the 2018 recruiting class, was only really able to find the field on special teams this year. He and Lombardi are the eighth and ninth MSU players to transfer this fall. Tucker has not shied away from the fact that if you aren’t a great fit for his program, you are free to see yourself out, and that seems how things have played out.

49ers will play remaining home games in Arizona

After hoping to make Arizona only a temporary residence, the San Francisco 49ers will play their remaining home games in The Copper State.

All hope for the San Francisco 49ers to return to Levi’s Stadium this season is gone. They will play all of their remaining home games at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.

The 49ers were forced to find a new home when Santa Clara County shutdown professional sports a few weeks ago. Hoping to return at some point later in the year, the team temporarily relocated to the home of the Arizona Cardinals, but it appears they will remain there through the end of the season.

San Francisco played their Week 13 and Week 14 contests at State Farm Stadium. They’ll head to AT&T Stadium in Dallas for Week 15 before returning to State Farm Stadium to face the Arizona Cardinals in a Cardinals home game. There was some chance they’d return to Levi’s Stadium for Week 17 based on the original timeline put down by Santa Clara County. Now with the ban on contact sports extended beyond the original Dec. 21 deadline, the 49ers will play their last game against the Seattle Seahawks in the desert to finish the year.

Mike Tirico replacing Al Michaels on Browns-Giants due to COVID-19 protocol issues

Mike Tirico gets the relief call for Al Michaels on Browns-Giants

Al Michaels will be out of the booth Sunday when NBC broadcasts the Cleveland Browns-New York Giants game.

The 76-year-old legendary voice failed to clear COVID-19 protocols and will be replaced by Mike Tirico.

Tirico has filled in for Michaels on his bye weeks in the past, including Sunday’s Pittsburgh Steelers-Buffalo Bills game.

Michaels said in a statement that he feels fine and has a temperature of 97.5 with no symptoms.

The shift of Tirico caused another move in play-by-play for Week 15 as he was originally on the call for the Carolina Panthers-Green Bay Packers game.

The assignment there goes to Joe Davis.

Raiders HC Jon Gruden says QB Derek Carr ’50/50′ for Week 16 vs Dolphins

Raiders HC Jon Gruden says QB Derek Carr ’50/50′ for Week 16 vs Dolphins

On Thursday night, as Derek Carr hobbled off the field with a groin injury, there wasn’t the same sense of dread that there was in 2016 when he broke his fibula. At that time, Derek was carrying the Raiders’ offense with big comeback wins and they were headed for their 12th win of the season, heading for the playoffs.

This time around the Raiders have been reeling in the past few games and don’t look like a playoff team. They also have a former starter in Marcus Mariota as the backup. So, when Carr went down, most were like ‘hey, let’s see what this Mariota kid’s got.’

Mariota came in and the offense didn’t seem to miss a beat. He led the Raiders on four scoring drives, three for touchdowns.

“What Marcus did last night was spectacular,” Gruden said Friday or Mariota’s performance… “When this kid is healthy, this guy is a special playmaker and I think he proved it last night.”

If nothing else it allows the Raiders to not have to bring Derek Carr back in if he’s not ready. His status is currently still undecided according to Gruden.

“I met with Derek this morning and he is still sore,” Gruden said. “I think there’s a chance but being conservative right now, I’d say it’s 50/50. . . Derek’s health will be determined here in a couple days.

The Raiders have nine days before they face the Dolphins. A rare Saturday night game the day after Christmas. Sounds like Gruden will be making his decision before they take the field again for practices next week.

The Bills elevated offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison from their practice squad ahead of their Week 15 meeting with the Denver Broncos. The team announced the move on Friday, one day prior to the flexed Saturday kickoff.

Harrison, 29, appeared in all 16 games for the Jets last season, making 10 starts. He has 42 starts in his career. Primarily a center, Harrison has also played guard.

After being cut by the Jets prior to the 2020 season, he signed with Buffalo via their practice squad. He has yet to appear in a game with the team this year.

Despite Harrison’s callup, it could just be a depth move. On the Bills’ final injury report this week, Buffalo did not have any offensive line in jeopardy of missing Week 15’s game.

Last weekend, guard Ike Boettger did struggle against the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Cameron Heyward on Buffalo’s offensive line in what was his fourth-career start. There is no official word on whether or not Harrison would actually see any playing time over the likes of Boettger or Brian Winters, who also has seen playing time in 2020 on the Bills’ O-line.

Another possibility is Lee Smith. The tight end is listed as questionable with a knee injury and is primarily used as a blocker
