Nick Saban ranked CBS Sports’ No. 1 coach entering 2020 season

Alabama head coach Nick Saban has once again been voted the number 1 Power Five college football coach. This time, by CBS Sports.

Yep, that’s right. Alabama head coach Nick Saban has once again been voted the number 1 Power Five college football coach. This time, by CBS Sports.

CBS Sport’s Tom Fornelli shared how the crew of CBS Sports college football writers voted on the coaches. “Regarding the criteria used to rank the coaches, there is none specifically. This is a highly subjective exercise based on what each voter believes makes a great coach — winning record, recruiting chops, up-and-coming talent — leading to a wide range of results on some.”

While in Tuscaloosa, there’s no doubt that Nick Saban has not only created a dynasty, but he has become a legend.

His stats back it up:

  • 7 SEC West Titles
  • 6 SEC Championships
  • 5 National Titles
  • 29 first round draft picks
  • 35 All-Americans
  • 2 Heisman Trophy Winners

Those are just a FEW of the amazing stats that Saban has had while at Alabama.

And CBS Sports agrees:

“The thing about sitting on the throne is that everybody else wants your spot, which makes it so difficult to keep it. Year after year, coaches and programs are coming. They’re trying to be the next Alabama. Well, to this point, Saban hasn’t lost his spot. He’s won five national titles with the Crimson Tide and six overall. The program he’s built at Alabama has been so dominant that, when it missed out on the College Football Playoff for the first time in history, you could almost hear a gasp across the entire country. Alabama is the standard to which every other program holds itself, and that’s due to the expectations Saban sets forth for his program. Until it falters, fat chance unseating the king.”

There’s no denying that the 2019 college football season did not go as planned, or as hoped, for the Crimson Tide.

Before the season even started, Joshua McMillon, and Dylan Moses went down for the season. And then later on, Eyabi Anoma and Antonio Alfano decided to transfer. During the season, Alabama would continue to suffer injuries. Labryan Ray, DJ Dale, and Raekwon Davis struggled with injuries, even throughout the season. Simply put, this defense was never anywhere near 100% healthy.

What this meant for the Tide was a lot of young talent would lead the defense. Shane Lee and Christian Harris were two freshman who became defensive leaders, even in their first season at Alabama. Jared Mayden, and Anfernee Jennings were the two dominant seniors who tried their best to use their experience and leadership to create a dominance on the defense, but the defense still struggled.

And get this, EVEN with losing their star QB, and majority of their experienced defenders to injuries, Alabama still played a hard fought game against LSU and Auburn, losing both by less than a touchdown.

Alabama fought back to finish the season strong with a 35-16 Citrus Bowl victory over the Michigan Wolverines.

Watch for Alabama to return this season hungry to win, and humbled from last season.
