Fifth inning dooms LSU baseball in sweep against Arkansas

The Razorbacks scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead in Game 3. LSU never got back into the game after that.

LSU entered Saturday’s Game 3 trying to avoid being swept by the Arkansas Razorbacks on the road, but it couldn’t get the job done as it lost 6-2 to suffer a sweep just one week removed from earning a sweep of its own.

[autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers and he went four innings allowing one run on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts. LSU scored first for the first time this series in the top of the second inning when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit an RBI double to score [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, everything fell apart for LSU. Arkansas hit a ground ball back to the Tigers pitcher that was not fielded cleanly and wound up scoring the tying run of the game. [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag] came into pitch for Dutton after that pitch and Taylor gave up three runs on two hits and a walk to make it 4-2 Arkansas headed to the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit a single up the middle to score [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] and cut the lead to 4-2.

But, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Razorbacks got that run back with a two-run home run to make it 6-2. That lead held all the way into the ninth inning.

The heart of the LSU order came up to bat to try and tie the game or take the lead. They couldn’t get it done as the Tigers dropped game three 6-2 and were swept by the Razorbacks in the series.

With the loss, LSU moves to 23-12 on the year, 7-8 in conference play. The Tigers will have Sunday and Monday off to regroup before taking on the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns at home on Tuesday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm CT from the Box.
