That kickoff is set for 98 days (at time of publishing) from now. In a kickoff series we remember the best players in Texas Longhorns history.

Number 99 Steve “Mongo” McMichael

If the name “Mongo” McMichael sounds familiar it might have been from his run in World Championship Wrestling as a member of the four horseman with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit. However, before he was wrestling or playing in the NFL Steve McMichaels was a Texas Longhorn who wore 99.

McMichael finished his Longhorns career as a two time unanimous All-American (1978-79) and first team all SWC. Steve McMichael was also named Texas MVP for his efforts in 1979. He would later be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He would spend 16 seasons in the NFL, mostly with the Chicago Bears. Former Bears head coach Mike Ditka called McMichael one of the toughest players he ever coached.

Others considered: Roy Miller (2005-08)

Keondre Coburn currently wears number 99. Next up is number 98.
