Former Bucs Super Bowl champion signs with New Orleans Saints

An important piece of the Bucs’ Super Bowl run will play against them as a division rival in 2023.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to see Jason Pierre-Paul again — just not in the way they were probably hoping to.

NFL insider Josina Anderson reported on Tuesday that Pierre-Paul is set to sign with the New Orleans Saints after a tryout, brining him back to the NFC South. This time, though, he’ll be playing against the Bucs, and he’ll see his former team on New Year’s Eve when the two face off again.

Pierre-Paul was a force in Tampa Bay, netting 124 solo tackles, 33 sacks, eight forced fumbles and two interceptions during his time with the Bucs. He was a big part of the team’s Super Bowl run, netting two sacks and 10 total tackles in the four games in 2020 that ended in Tampa Bay taking home the Lombardi. Since then, he had a stint with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022 where he managed three sacks and 26 total tackles.

Buffalo Bills fire offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey

The Buffalo Bills have mercifully fired offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey after a very rough start to the 2023 NFL season.

Ken Dorsey had been the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator since the start of the 2022 season, when former OC Brian Daboll was hired as the head coach of the New York Giants, and Dorsey — formerly the team’s quarterbacks coach — was promoted.

After Monday night’s debacle against the Denver Broncos, when Buffalo’s offense once again looked like a disjointed offense easy to decipher, head coach Sean McDermott made the obvious decision.

Brady, who’s been the Bills’ quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons, last called an offense for the Carolina Panthers in 2020 and 2021 under head coach Matt Rhule. Eventually, Brady and Rhule came to a serious disagreement over the Panthers’ run percentages, so it’s tough to say what Brady can and will change in-season, but based on this offense so far this season, there’s nowhere to go but up.

MSU basketball vs. Duke: LSJ’s Graham Couch provides his determining factors, prediction

Check out LSJ columnist Graham Couch’s prediction for this matchup between Michigan State and Duke

Michigan State will look to make up for a sluggish start last week in a big-time matchup against Duke on Tuesday night.

The Spartans opened the season with two uninspiring performances last week, including a home opener stunning loss to James Madison. Michigan State can right the ship, however, should they beat No. 9 Duke in the Champions Classic on Tuesday in Chicago.

Duke also enters this game with a 1-1 record, with a blowout win over Dartmouth and home loss to Arizona. The Blue Devils are considered the favorites to win the ACC this year and will be a contender for the National Championship as well.

Every game, Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal provides his breakdown of the matchup with key determining factors and a prediction. So how does he feel about this matchup between the Spartans and Blue Devils?

As wins rise, Rockets reap benefits of higher fan attendance, engagement

The #Rockets have won six straight games — all inside Toyota Center — and the data makes clear that fans are showing their appreciation.

With six straight wins, the 2023-24 Houston Rockets (6-3) are on the rise under new head coach Ime Udoka. And after three rebuilding seasons with records near the bottom of the Western Conference, fans are already showing their appreciation for that growth.

The raucous environments at Toyota Center were hard to miss during the team’s opening homestand, which concluded with a 6-1 record and Sunday’s statement win over the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets. But beyond fan engagement being clearly higher, raw attendance numbers are improving, as well.

The Rockets sold out four of the seven games on that homestand — and with an average nightly attendance of 17,121, they are at 94.8% of capacity. That’s up from 90.4% in the 2022-23 season and 86.3% in the 2021-22 campaign, according to ESPN data.

Gretchen Sheirr, president of business operations, told Vanessa Richardson of the Space City Home Network that all VIP courtside seats are sold out for the season, which hasn’t happened since the 2018-19 season. In recent days, the team opened a waitlist for future opportunities. Lexus Lounge memberships are also at capacity.

“People definitely like wins, so it’s been fun,” Sheirr said. “A lot of it is about wins on the court, but it’s also about the full-360 experience when you’re here. It’s a testament to how great the fans are in Houston, and to how fun it is to be at Toyota Center.”

Could Lakers attempt to pry Alex Caruso from Bulls with trade?

With the Chicago Bulls’ current struggles, could the Los Angeles Lakers try to trade for Alex Caruso?

With the early struggles the Chicago Bulls have been going through have come talks of a potential rebuild. Some fans wanted them to hit the reset button this summer, but the Bulls decided to roll with the core they had, even adding a couple of veterans to the bench. Unfortunately, the results have been rough so far.

That said, Alex Caruso has been a major bright spot, playing well on the defensive end and leading the team in overall +/- through the first nine games of the season. But with how poorly the Bulls have been playing, he could end up being trade bait by the time the deadline rolls around, especially if the Bulls decide to rebuild.

The Locked on Bulls podcast recently discussed the idea of the Los Angeles Lakers, Caruso’s former team, could make a move for him at the deadline.

If the Lakers come calling, what should the Bulls ask for in a potential trade?

Victor Wembanyama speaks to media after Spurs loss to Timberwolves

Check out Victor Wembanyama’s full press conference after the San Antonio Spurs’ loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The San Antonio Spurs lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night by a score of 117-110, moving them to 0-1 in the In-Season Tournament group play standings. It was Victor Wembanyama’s first NBA matchup with fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert, who he’s had a relationship with for years.

Wembanyama had an impressive showing, which should provide Spurs fans some relief, as he had been struggling to match up with stronger bigs heading into the matchup against Gobert. The rookie finished the night with 29 points, nine rebounds, four assists, one steal, and four blocks while shooting 12-of-21 from the field and 3-of-7 from behind the three-point line.

After the game, Wembanyama spoke to the media about his performance, Gobert, and other topics. Check out his full post-game press conference here.

With Wembanyama back on track, the Spurs still weren’t able to pick up the win, but his performance should be a good sign of things to come.

Eagles’ linebacker Nakobe Dean expected to land on injured reserve with a foot injury

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean suffered a Lisfranc sprain and the 2nd-year defender will likely go on injured reserve according to Mike Garafalo

The Eagles are set to be without second-year linebacker Nakobe Dean for an extended period after the former Georgia All-American suffered a Lisfranc sprain.

It’s the second time Dean will miss an extended period of action after he suffered a foot injury against New England that placed him on injured reserve for four weeks.

Dean, 22, started on Sunday afternoon and has been a part of a three-man rotation with Nicholas Morrow and Zach Cunningham.

After not missing a game with an injury in college, Dean has struggled to stay on the field this season, his first as an NFL starter, and he’s been a critical figure in the success of Sean Desai’s defense.

According to PFF, Dean has 26 tackles, 11 stops, and one sack, with an 80.2 grade against the run.

Broncos coach Sean Payton implementing run-heavy offense

Take note, fantasy football managers: Javonte Williams should have a heavy workload after the Broncos’ bye week.

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson had more than 30 passing attempts in four of the team’s first five games of the season. Over the last three weeks, he’s had 22, 29 and 19 passing attempts.

In that same three-week span, running back Javonte Williams has seen his carries increase from 10 to 15 to 27. The Broncos have become more run-heavy in recent weeks, and the team is 2-1 during that span.

Denver coach Sean Payton downplayed the team’s 40 rushing attempts against the Kansas City Chiefs last week, claiming that a four-minute drive to kill off the game skewed the numbers.

“I wouldn’t have been able to guess how many — normally speaking, when you get into four-minute, that’s when you pick up 10 extra rushes,” Payton said after Sunday’s win over the Chiefs.

“They’re not always good ones because you’re going against a goal line or a heavy-loaded front, but we had — so count 10 extra ones when you’re running — or eight extra ones. But we ran the ball well the last time we played them. We just felt like we needed to throw it better and score. We were able to do that to some extent, but enough to win.”

Even if the rushes from the final drive are tossed out, the Broncos still had a run-heavy attack against Kansas City. Wilson admitted that after the win, and he praised Payton for the successful offensive game plan.

“I thought the game plan was a great plan by the coaches in terms of the mixture of what we wanted to be able to do,” Wilson said. “We knew that defense is — they’re one of the top defenses all year. I think they’ve been [No.] 1, or 2, or 3 all year. They have good guys on that side of the ball and they do a good job of mixing things up.

“I thought our offensive line — we wanted to set the tone of how physical we wanted to be throughout that game. I think we ran it 40 times. In terms of the passing game, we wanted to capitalize on our opportunities when they were there. I thought it was a really great gameplan by Coach Payton — all the coaches. I think all the offensive coaches did a really good job of painting the picture of what we wanted to do.”

If that’s a sign of things to come for Denver’s offense, Broncos fans can expect to see a run-heavy attack — featuring plenty of Williams carries — in the second half of the 2023 season. Take note, fantasy football managers: Williams should have a heavy workload after the bye week.
