MSU basketball vs. Duke: LSJ’s Graham Couch provides his determining factors, prediction

Check out LSJ columnist Graham Couch’s prediction for this matchup between Michigan State and Duke

Michigan State will look to make up for a sluggish start last week in a big-time matchup against Duke on Tuesday night.

The Spartans opened the season with two uninspiring performances last week, including a home opener stunning loss to James Madison. Michigan State can right the ship, however, should they beat No. 9 Duke in the Champions Classic on Tuesday in Chicago.

Duke also enters this game with a 1-1 record, with a blowout win over Dartmouth and home loss to Arizona. The Blue Devils are considered the favorites to win the ACC this year and will be a contender for the National Championship as well.

Every game, Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal provides his breakdown of the matchup with key determining factors and a prediction. So how does he feel about this matchup between the Spartans and Blue Devils?

MSU Basketball vs. Duke: Stream, broadcast info, prediction for Tuesday

Check out all of the key game details for this matchup between the Spartans and Blue Devils

It’s time for us to really see what the Spartans are made of.

Two of the game’s best programs — Duke and Michigan State — will link up in the annual Champions Classic event on Tuesday night. This will be the first game of the night, with Kentucky-Kansas following afterwards.

Michigan State got off to a rocky start last week to open the 2023-24 season with a stunning loss to James Madison. The Spartans bounced back for their first win of the year vs. Southern Indiana, and now things will get much tougher with Duke next up for Michigan State.

Duke also enters this matchup 1-1 with a home loss to Arizona as their blemish. The Blue Devils, like the Spartans, opened the season in the top five nationally and will look to avoid a second straight loss on Tuesday night.

MSU paired with Duke in NCAA Tournament bracket prediction from The Athletic

Two of college basketball’s biggest brands could be linking up in the first round of this year’s NCAA Tournament

Two of college basketball’s biggest brands could be linking up in the first round of this year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Athletic released an updated NCAA Tournament bracket projection on Friday, and Michigan State came in as a No. 9 seed. That, off the bat, seemed rather low for the Spartans compared to other bracketologists. What’s more attention-grabbing is who they would face in the opening round: No. 8 seed Duke.

Michigan State and Duke have played their share of big-time matchups over the years, including numerous ones in the NCAA Tournament. Just last year, Duke knocked out the Spartans in the second round.

But this would be the first time these two teams met this early in the event and would do amazing in TV ratings. So this may be a matchup we actually see in a couple of weeks.

Michigan State and Duke have had a heated rivalry in basketball across the years, and this is a truly classy move from the Blue Devils. While this is a small gesture in the grand scheme of things, I applaud everyone involved at Duke who set this up.
