After workout with Broncos, QB Nick Fitzgerald lands in XFL

Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, who had a tryout with the Broncos in December, has landed in the XFL.

Former Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald was among 19 players who worked out for the Broncos in December but he was not among the 15 players the team signed to reserve/future contracts.

Denver signed quarterback Brett Rypien to a future deal, which wasn’t surprising given that Rypien spent all of last season with the Broncos. That was disappointing for Fitzerald, but his football dream isn’t dead yet.

Fitzgerald has signed with the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL and he might have a chance to start. His competition for playing time will include Taylor Heinicke and Jordan Ta’amu.

Fitzgerald (6-5, 226 pounds) appeared in 43 games during his time at Mississippi State and completed 54.6 percent of his passes for 6,055 yards with 54 touchdown passes against 28 interceptions. He also rushed for 3,504 yards and 45 touchdowns and caught one pass for 9 yards.

He entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Buccaneers last year and spent part of his rookie season on Tampa Bay’s practice squad.

The BattleHawks’ first game will be against the Dallas Renegades on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 3:00 p.m. MT. That contest will air on ESPN.

XFL releases commercial for 2020 season on Fox

The XFL is ready to have NFL fans turn their attention toward the new league after the Super Bowl.

The XFL will air on four different TV networks this spring: ABC, ESPN, Fox and FS1. ESPN has already released a promo for the league’s 2020 season, as has Fox Sports.

The league teamed up with Fox to air a commercial that’s promoting “more plays, less downtime and more scoring” in the XFL. Given that Super Bowl LIV will air on Fox, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this advertisement air during the 49ers’ matchup with the Chiefs on Sunday:

The XFL will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 8 when D.C. hosts Seattle at 12 p.m. MT on ABC. That contest will feature four former Broncos players: safety Shamarko Thomas (D.C.), linebacker Steven Johnson (Seattle), offensive lineman Dillon Day (Seattle) and linebacker Stansly Maponga (Seattle).

Several former Denver players were cut by the league before the start of the season, including safety Rahim Moore. Other players — like wide receiver/returner Kelvin McKnight — left the league for opportunities in the NFL. McKnight left the XFL’s Dallas team to sign a reserve/future contract with the Broncos in December.

Rahim Moore among 6 ex-Broncos cut by XFL teams

Rahim Moore was among six former Broncos players who were cut by XFL teams earlier this week.

Rahim Moore was among six former Denver Broncos players who were cut when XFL teams trimmed their rosters from 71 players down to 52 players earlier this week. The safety failed to make Washington, D.C.’s final roster.

In addition to Moore, defensive lineman Sealver Siliga (Dallas), offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio (Seattle), tight end Orson Charles (Dallas), wide receiver Steven Dunbar (Dallas) and cornerback Lorenzo Doss (New York) were also cut by their XFL teams.

Former Denver wide receiver Jordan Leslie, linebacker Josh Banderas, wide receiver John Diarse and wide receiver Durron Neal were part of the XFL draft pool but went unselected in October.

Ex-Broncos cornerback Brendan Langley was drafted by the XFL’s Houston-based team but he left the league to sign with the Seahawks’ practice squad during the NFL playoffs. After Seattle’s season ended, Langley’s contract expired and he was not re-signed.

Wide receiver/returner Kelvin McKnight was selected by Dallas in the XFL draft but left the league in December to sign a reserve/future contract with the Broncos. He spent part of last season on Denver’s practice squad.

Punter Shane Tripucka, the grandson of Broncos Ring of Fame quarterback Frank Tripucka, was part of the XFL draft pool but went unselected. He worked out for the Broncos in December but was not among the players Denver signed to reserve/future contracts.

Wide receiver Max McCaffrey, the son of former Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, was selected by D.C. in the XFL draft but he left the team earlier this month to join his father’s coaching staff at Northern Colorado. The younger McCaffrey will coach UNC’s wide receivers this fall.

The XFL will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 8 when D.C. hosts Seattle at 12 p.m. MT on ABC. That game will be followed by L.A. at Houston on Fox.

XFL fumbling timing of roster announcements

The XFL has decided to reveal the rosters for all 8 teams Monday, which is in the teeth of Super Bowl week festivities.

The XFL has carefully plotted its steps to avoid many of the missteps the league made in its first incarnation. That is why it is strange the league will be making its roster announcements right into the teeth of Super Bowl week.

The new league, which will kick off next month, announced Tuesday it will reveal the rosters for the eight teams on Jan. 27 at noon ET.

The focus of the football world will be elsewhere at that time, like Miami Gardens, (FL), where the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will be preparing for Super Bowl Opening Night that evening and where virtually all the assembled football media will be.

Being  honest, the interest in roster reveales for XFL 2020 is minimal at best, but this timing will diminish that. It is stranger when you consider FOX’s Joel Klatt says the “talent in the league is unprecedented” on the network’s commercial for the XFL.

An XFL receiver has the best custom helmet visors, which include a SpongeBob meme

Jeff Badet is doing some really cool stuff here.

You may not know the name Jeff Badet yet since the XFL season hasn’t started.

But if he keeps up his amazing custom helmet visor game, he might be as recognizable as Rod Smart AKA He Hate Me (remember him from the original XFL?) down the road.

The former Oklahoma receiver who was once a wideout on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad has gotten some attention ahead of the XFL kickoff season for the visors he keeps wearing as a member of the Dallas Renegades. They’re pretty amazing.

Here’s a recent one with the SpongeBob “Ight, imma head out” meme on it:

A tribute to Allen Iverson, perfect for “PRACTICE!”

This looks cool:

And a good one given his last name:

Hopefully the XFL will allow these in games.

XFL’s Jeff Badet has amazing Allen Iverson ‘practice’ visor

The XFL appears to be allowing players to have fun designing their helmet visors.

Jeff Badet is bucking to be the Rod Smart — aka He Hate Me — of the new XFL.

The former Oklahoma WR, trying out for the Dallas Renegades, has one of the coolest visors in any football league.

Check out his tribute to Allen Iverson:

XFL announces intriguing rules for 2020 season

The XFL has announced the rules it will play by for its season that begins next month.

The NFL playoffs are underway, which can only mean we are nearing kickoff for the reincarnation of the XFL.

The rebirth of the league will bring some interesting rules and they were announced Tuesday:

One of the interesting decisions is a receiver will be credited with a catch with one foot inbounds, which is the college football rule. Also, there will be  a 25-second play clock that begins after the ball is spotted for the next play.

The league has a multitude of conditions applied to kickoffs, punts and other situations, which are addresssed below:

Kickoffs:

  • The kicker kicks from the 25-yard line and must kick the ball in the air and in play between the opponent’s 20-yard line and the end zone.
  • The coverage team lines up on the return side 35-yard line and the return team lines up on the 30-yard line. Each team must have exactly 3 players outside the hash marks on both sides of the ball and cannot move until the ball is caught by the returner.
  • Out of bounds kicks and kicks that fall short of the 20-yard line will result in an illegal procedure penalty, taking the ball all the way out to the kicking team’s 45 yard line.
  • Players can move when the ball is touched by the returner or 3 seconds after the ball touches the ground (when the official waves his hand down).
  • If the ball is kicked into the end zone and is downed it is a “Major” touchback and the ball is placed at the return side 35-yard line.
  • If the ball bounces in bounds and then out of the end zone or is downed in the end zone, the ball is placed at the return side 15-yard line.
  • If a player on the return team touches the ball and it goes out of bounds, the ball is spotted where it went out of bounds.
  • If a team wishes to run an onside kick, it must indicate this to the official before the play and the two teams will be permitted to line up using traditional NFL rules (i.e. 10 yards apart from the kicking team). There will be no surprise onside kicks.

PATs

  • After a touchdown, the team has the option of running a play from the 2, 5, or 10-yard line, worth 1, 2, or 3 points respectively. The team must run an offensive play and no kicking plays are allowed.
  • If the defense is able to cause a turnover and return the ball to the opponent’s end zone, the resulting score is equal to the number of points the offense was attempting to score on its PAT.

Punts

XFL Rule

  • Punting team cannot release past the line of scrimmage until the ball is kicked.
  • If the ball goes out of bounds inside the 35-yard line, it is a “Major” touchback and the ball goes to the 35-yard line.
  • If a punted ball lands in the opponent’s end zone or goes out of the end zone the result is a “Major” touchback, and the ball goes out to the 35-yard line.
  • Fair catches are permitted (though disincentivized – see Rationale)

https://twitter.com/xfl2020/status/1214577204077768707

Double forward pass

  • If a team completes a forward pass behind the line of scrimmage, that team may throw a second forward pass, as long as the ball has at no time crossed the line of scrimmage.

Overtime

  • Overtime shall consist of 5 “Rounds”, staged in alternating single-play possessions as is customary in NHL shootouts or MLS penalty kicks. A “Round” will consist of one offensive play per team. Each possession starts at the opponent’s 5-yard line and the offensive team has one play to score. The team with more points after 5 rounds is the winner.
    • If a team has been mathematically eliminated before all 5 rounds have been completed, the game ends immediately (e.g. If Team A scores on its first 3 attempts and Team B is stopped on its first 3 attempts, then no subsequent plays are necessary).
    • If teams are tied after 5 rounds, then rounds continue until one team is leading at the conclusion of a round, and that team will be the winner.
  • For scoring purposes, each successful overtime score is worth 2 points.
  • The defensive team cannot score. If the offensive team commits a turnover, the play is over immediately.
  • If the defensive team commits a penalty, the offensive team will be allowed to re-attempt from the 1-yard line.
  • Any subsequent penalty committed by the defensive team on any subsequent play, including in future rounds, will result in a score awarded to the offensive team.
  • If the offensive team commits a pre-snap penalty, the ball will be moved back from the original spot, pursuant to regular rules and the play will be re-attempted.
  • Comeback period: Occurs after the 2-Minute Warning in each half. On plays that end in the field of play, the game clock will be stopped until the ball has been spotted and 5 seconds have run off of the play clock.
  • Outside the last 2 minutes of each half, the game clock will run after incompletions and out of bounds plays.
  • Each team will have 2 one-minute timeouts per half.
  • The XFL will have no coaches’ challenges and all plays will be subject to review from the Replay Official, who will be stationed in a booth above the field.

WATCH: XFL comissioner defends restricting contracted player from leaving for NFL

The XFL is still seven weeks from launch, but don’t expect any of the players under contract with the league to change between now and then.

The XFL is still seven weeks from launch, but don’t expect any of the players under contract with the league to change between now and then.

Commissioner Oliver Luck spoke at length with the Tampa Bay Times roughly two months from kickoff and defended the league’s policy on not releasing its players from their contracts if an NFL team is interested in-season.

The Detroit Lions inquired with the XFL about quarterback Josh Johnson in November, but Luck & the XFL said the LA Wildcats player would be held to his contract ahead of December mini-camp.

Luck said, “In the game of football today (…) your quarterback play is determinative. (…) we said, ‘No, we’re keeping him. He’s ours, he signed a contract. He’s committed to us.”

Luck said he also turned down releasing quarterback Landry Jones and Phillip Walker after Ben Roethlisberger’s season-ending injury.

The commissioner explained that in order for the XFL’s relaunch to succeed, stability is key, saying “Once a player signs a contract (…) then he’s under contract with us. We won’t release that player to the NFL until after our season. We need certainty. We can’t just have guys peeling off.”

Two quarterbacks that fans will *not* see in the XFL are polarizing former football stars Johnny Manziel and Colin Kaepernick.

Johnny Football was in the XFL’s draft pool, according to Luck, but scouts and coaches, “didn’t think he was going to help their team.”

Of Kaepernick, Luck said, “I think his salary demands are way out of our ballpark. He was never really a viable option.”

Power ranking every XFL team’s home and away uniforms

The XFL just revealed each team’s uniforms for the 2020 season. Which team has the best look?

The start of the 2020 XFL season is only a few months away, and each of the league’s eight teams revealed their home and away uniforms on Tuesday. The reborn league’s first season will kick off on February 8th, and while some teams will be looking sharp out on the field, others may want to go back to the drawing board. Here’s a look at every XFL team’s home and away uniforms for 2020.

1. St. Louis BattleHawks

The BattleHawks nailed it. While many other XFL teams are slamming as many primary and secondary colors on their jerseys that they can fit, but BattleHawks’ execution of their color scheme wouldn’t look out of place on an NFL field. The extremely large logo on the helmet may be polarizing, but it’s a bold design that fits with the rest of the uniform.

2. New York Guardians

Silver and black always looks great, but the Guardians don’t just have a copy of a Raiders design. The Guardians’ new home jerseys are somewhat reminiscent of the Las Vegas Outlaws of the original XFL, but taken to the next level. The Guardians’ away jerseys are primarily grey. The oversized helmet logo meets in a V shape at the back of the helmet, which is a unique look.

3. Houston Roughnecks

The Roughnecks took the Texans’ primary colors and went full New England Patriots with them. The results are above average by XFL standards.

4. Dallas Renegades

The Renegades have one of the coolest helmets in the league, but the rest of their uniform is just a standard Tennessee Titans home and away with an added red stripe, representing the eyes of the Renegade. Dallas doesn’t score many points for originality, but these are very professional-looking jerseys, at least.

5. D.C. Defenders

There’s nothing wrong with the Defenders’ jerseys, and they may be the cleanest-looking in the league, but they’re just a bit… boring. They look like uniforms you’d create in a video game, assuming you got bored and didn’t bother scrolling through the various options once you selected you colors. The lightning bolt down the side of the pants is a very nice touch, however.

6. Seattle Dragons

It’s difficult to make dark blue and dark green work together, and it feels like green should have been Seattle’s dominant color to match the body of their dragon. We also have to talk about the helmet. Look at this thing:

A close-up of the logo allows you to admire the detail, but from far away, it sort of looks like something a child would draw. Seattle’s away jerseys have a very Miami Hurricanes vibe, and look much nicer overall.

7. Los Angeles Wildcats

I feel for whoever had to design the Wildcats’ jerseys, because pulling off a successful jersey with primary colors of red and orange is a Herculean feat. The Calgary Flames have it figured out, but mostly because they use orange sparingly, and mostly rely on red and black to dominate their uniforms. The Miami Heat, similarly, feature very little orange.

The Wildcats have gone for a more even mix of orange and red, and while it’s not terrible, it’s not great. The away jerseys swap the red stripe on the side for orange, and are even less successful.

8. Tampa Bay Vipers

If you’ve been dreaming of an Oregon x Seattle Sounders mashup jersey, Tampa Bay is your team. The two-tone green just doesn’t look great, though, and the team logo isn’t doing the helmet any favors. Tampa Bay’s away jerseys are much better, but the lime green helmet brings it down.
