XFL rules: Explaining all the rule differences between the XFL and NFL

All you need to know about the XFL’s rules.

The 2020 XFL season will begin this weekend, and if you’re planning on tuning in to get your football fix during the NFL offseason, you may be a little confused by the league’s new rules. The XFL has made several major rule changes in an attempt to reduce overall game times and produce more highlight-reel plays.

Here’s a primer on all the major rule changes and differences from standard NFL rules.

SCORING RULES:

Point-after touchdown plays

  • In the XFL, there are no kicked extra points after touchdowns. Instead, teams will have an option to run a play to score either 1, 2 or 3 extra points, creating the possibility for a 9-point touchdown.
  • A 1-point try will be run from the 2-yard line. A 2-point try will start at the 5-yard line, and a 3-point try will start at the 10-yard line.

GAME RULES:

Double-forward passes

Unlike in the NFL, the XFL will allow two forward passes on a play, provided that the first forward pass is caught behind the line of scrimmage.

What is a catch?

In the XFL, receivers only need to have one foot – or any other part of their body – contact the ground in bounds, instead of two feet in the NFL. Here is how the league defines what a catch is:

  1. Secures control of a live ball in flight before the ball touches the ground.
  2. Touches the ground in bounds with any part of his body, and then
  3. Maintains control of the ball long enough to enable him to perform an act common to the game, i.e., long enough to pitch or hand the ball, advance it, avoid or ward off an opponent, etc.

Kickoffs

The XFL designed its kicking rules in a way to increase the amount of returns we see compared to the NFL, and to make returns safer.  Kickoffs are going to look very different.

On a kickoff, the kicker will kick the ball from their own 30-yard line, but every blocker will be lined up on the opposing team’s 35-yard line. The return team blockers will be lined up at their own 30, just five yards away.

Only the kicker and receiver can move before the ball is caught. All other blockers are permitted to move when the ball is caught, or three seconds after it hits the ground, if the ball isn’t caught.

Kicks that fly out of bounds, or kicks that fall short of the opposing 20-yard line, will result in the receiving team taking the ball at their own 45-yard line.

Touchbacks will result in the receiving team starting at their own 35-yard line.

Teams will be required to inform an official if they plan to use an onside kick, meaning they cannot surprise the opposing team with an onside kick.

Punts

Punting rules have also been changed to entice coaches to go for it on fourth down.

All punts that result in touchbacks will be placed on the receiving team’s 35-yard line. Punts that go out of bounds will also be placed on the receiving team’s 35-yard line, or wherever the ball went out if that occurred before reaching the 35.

The punting team may not cross the line of scrimmage before the ball is punted, which should reduce the amount of fair catches significantly.

Challenges

There are no coaches challenges in the XFL. All reviews will be initiated by a replay official. Via the XFL, here is a list of reviewable plays:

(a) Plays involving possession. (b) Plays involving touching of either the ball or the ground. (c) Plays governed by the goal line. (d) Plays governed by the boundary lines. (e) Plays governed by the line of scrimmage. (f) Plays governed by the line to gain. (g) Number of players on the field at the snap. (h) Game administration. (1) Penalty enforcement. (2) Proper down. (3) Spot of a foul. (4) Status of the game clock. (i) Disqualification of a player. This list of reviewable plays is identical to those in the NFL prior to 2019.

OVERTIME FORMAT:

The XFL has devised a completely new format for overtime, which is comparable to a shootout in soccer.

In overtime, each team’s offense will have five attempts to complete a two-point conversion from the five-yard line, with each successful conversion being worth two points. The team with the most points at the end of the shootout is the winner. If one team clinches a win early, the unnecessary remaining rounds of the shootout will not be played.

There will be no coin toss to determine the order of overtime. The visiting team will always make the first two-point attempt.

Defenses cannot score in overtime possessions in the event of a turnover.

Penalties in overtime:

Penalties will be crucial in overtime plays. If the offensive team commits a pre-snap penalty, the ball will moved back and the play will be re-attempted. If the offense commits a post-snap penalty, the play is considered dead, and any score will not count.

If the defense commits a penalty pre-snap, the ball will be moved to the one-yard line. For a post-snap penalty, the offensive team will have the option to re-try the play from the one-yard line if they do not score. Any future penalties committed by the defense in any future round will result in an automatic score for the offense.

TIMING RULES:

Game clock:

The XFL will use a running clock outside of the final two minutes of the second quarter, and the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.

The final two minutes of the second and fourth quarters is what the XFL refers to as the “comeback period.” During these periods, plays that end out of bounds or with an incompletion will stop the clock until the next snap. The clock will be stopped after all other plays that end in bounds until the ball is spotted and five seconds have run off the play clock. In theory, this should give an offensive team leeway to run plays in the center of the field, as they will be able to rush back to the line of scrimmage without time coming off the clock.

The play clock is 25 seconds, and will begin when the ball is spotted following the previous play.

There will be one official on the field dedicated to spotting the ball, in an effort to speed up the process compared to the NFL.

Timeouts:

Each XFL team will receive two timeouts per half, compared to three per half for NFL teams.

The halftime break will be 10 minutes.

Penalties:

The XFL’s “illegal man downfield” rule has been rewritten to make it easier for officials to enforce.

No ineligible player shall be or have been more than three yards beyond the line of scrimmage until a passer throws a legal forward pass that crosses the line of scrimmage. A player is in violation of this rule if any part of his body is beyond the three-yard limit.

XFL Odds: XFL 2020 Championship futures odds

The XFL returns, while we analyze the XFL sports betting odds around the 2020 XFL Championship

[jwplayer fg15QU4s]

Think football season is over now that the Super Bowl has wrapped up? Think again. The 2020 XFL season is set to begin Saturday.

Today, we are taking a look at all of the XFL sports betting odds for the XFL Championship to find your best future bets before the season kicks off.

2020 XFL Champion Odds

Odds via BetMGM, last updated February 4, 2020.

Dallas Renegades Odds (+250)

The favorites to win the first XFL Championship since it’s rebirth is the Dallas Renegades, led by former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops. Led by former Steelers’ quarterback Landry Jones, the Renegades have the best combination of quarterback talent and proven skill players. Expect them to be one of the last teams left by the end of the season. And at +250, they are pretty good bet to win the championship as they have a proven roster with an experienced coaching staff.

New York Guardians Odds (+350)

Coming in with the second-best odds to win the XFL Championship is the New York Guardians. Led by former Raiders’ quarterback Matt McGloin, there just isn’t a ton of reasons to be excited about this offense. It’s coached by Kevin Gilbride, who is the oldest head coach in the league. Considering passing on the Guardians to win the championship in favor of teams with more enticing odds.

Los Angeles Wildcats Odds (+450)

Led by former NFL quarterback Josh Johnson, the Wildcats may have the best overall quarterback in all of the XFL. However, a receiving corps led by former NFL washouts Nelson Spruce and Tre McBride isn’t exactly thrilling. But the Wildcats are a fun XFL futures bet based off their quarterback alone. Keep an eye on former Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman, who is playing in his first football game since winning the Senior Bowl MVP in 2016.

Keep your football betting action going by placing a legal sports bet on XFL games at BetMGM. Bet now!

Tampa Bay Vipers Odds (+550)

Another fun mid-range bet is the Tampa Bay Vipers at +550. With former Bears head coach Marc Trestman leading the Vipers, they have a roster full of talent. At quarterback is former Georgia Bulldog star Aaron Murray, who also played in the AAF just a year ago. There is also several other AAF stars on this roster, such as Seantavius Jones and Rannell Hall. Considering this staff has Jerry Glanville as their defensive coordinator, they are going to be must-see TV each week.

Houston Roughnecks Odds (+750)

If you want to bet on a team that is guaranteed to have a fun offense, look no further than the Houston Roughnecks with June Jones as their head coach. Jones is one of the masterminds behind the run-and-shoot offense and will be looking to use that style of offense again in the XFL.

While the starting quarterback has yet to be named, one would assume that former NFL quarterback Connor Cook will eventually get the nod. The Roughnecks also have former NFL contributors such as Sammie Coates and Andre Williams on their roster as well. It’s also important to note that the Roughnecks don’t have a tight end on their roster. So don’t plan on them running the ball very often.

DC Defenders Odds (+750)

One of the better longshot bets is the DC Defenders at +750, as former National Championship quarterback Cardale Jones will be leading the charge. Coached by Pep Hamilton, the DC Defenders should have one of the more enjoyable offenses to watch with former NFL receivers Eli Rogers and Simmie Cobbs on the roster, as well.

St. Louis Battlehawks Odds (+1000)

At 10-1 odds to win the XFL Championship is the St. Louis Battlehawks, coached by former NFL tight end coach Jonathan Hayes. While the Battlehawks are littered with former NFL talents like Christine Michael, Matt Jones, and Marquette King, former Ole Miss quarterback Jordan Ta’amu doesn’t inspire much confidence at the team’s most important position. Consider passing on the Battleahawks’ futures odds.

Seattle Dragons Odds (+1200)

And the team with the worst odds to win the XFL Championship is the Seattle Dragos, coached by former NFL quarterback Jim Zorn. While quarterback Brandon Silvers had some success in the AAF, the lack of experience from the coaching staff and the quarterback position makes the Dragons a tough bet, even at 12-1 odds. Keep an eye on former Navy QB/RB/WR Keenan Reynolds as a possible playmaker for the Dragons.

Several former Jags set to take field in XFL’s return

Tre McBride is one of several former Jags who could be an early contributor in the XFL, which will have its first game on Saturday.

The NFL season may be over with Super Bowl LIV in the books, but thanks to the return of the XFL, football season will continue. The first couple of games will kick off Saturday February 8 and will run through April 19, which will mark the date of the league’s championship game.

Last month, all eight teams finalized their rosters and several Jags manage to stick. Here are the 17 former Jags who will be apart of the XFL’s return:

DC Defenders

  • CB Doran Grant
  • CB Jalen Myrick
  • DT Tony Guerad
  • S Cody Brown

Houston Roughnecks

  • CB Saivion Smith
  • OL Demetrius Rhaney
  • OL Avery Gennesy
  • S Cody Brown

Los Angeles Wildcats

  • WR Tre McBride
  • RB Dujuan Harris
  • RB Elijah Hood

New York Guardians

  • RB Tim Cook III
  • LB Nick DeLuca
  • DT T.J. Barnes

St. Louis BattleHawks

  • DT Marcus Hardison

Tampa Bay Vipers

  • QB Chase Litton
  • CB Bryce Canady
  • TE DeAndre Goolsby

Analysis

The New York Guardians, Los Angeles Wildcats, and DC Defenders will be worth watching the most if you’re looking for former Jags who could have a big impact.

For the Guardians, linebacker Nick DeLuca could be a big contributor in terms of tackles as he’s one of the few names above who has played in a regular season football game with the Jags. He started in two games for the Jags and participated in nine, accumulating 10 tackles and a sack.

Running back Tim Cook could be a bruiser type tailback for the Guardians at 6-foot-0, 247 pounds, and I could see head coach and former Jags assistant Kevin Gilbride utilizing him a lot this XFL season. Additionally, defensive tackle T.J. Barnes is a player who could eat up double teams in the middle of the Guardians’ defense at 6-foot-7, 365 pounds.

The Defenders’ defense could have some early contributions from corners Jalen Myrick and Doran Grant. Myrick offers elite speed and ran a 4.28 at the 2017 combine, so he could be utilized both on defense and maybe on special teams.

Grant, on the other hand, played alongside Myrick a lot in the 2017 preseason when with the Jags. His scrappiness should definitely get him some time on the field as he proved to be someone who was always near the ball in the Jags’ preseason practices.

Lastly, the name to look out for with the Los Angeles Wildcats is that of receiver Tre McBride. He was close to making the Jags’ final roster last year but was ultimately beat out by C.J. Board. If his hands have improved, he could be a go-to guy for the Wildcats through the air as he offers them a target with good size (6-foot-0, 210-pounds).

When does the XFL season start?

The NFL season is about to end, but the XFL season is only a few days away.

The NFL season will come to a close on Sunday night in Miami, and either the Kansas City Chiefs or San Francisco 49ers will be crowned world champions at Hard Rock Stadium. Professional football fans won’t have to wait very long to get a weekend fix, however, as the reborn XFL launches the week after the Super Bowl.

The XFL season will officially kick off on Saturday, February 8th with the Seattle Dragons playing the D.C. Defenders (2 p.m. ET, ABC). Through Week 8 of the 10-week regular season, there will be two nationally televised games on both Saturdays and Sundays, with Thursday games being added in the final two weeks. A four-team playoff will begin on April 18th, and the championship game will be played on April 26th.

It remains to be seen if the XFL can succeed where the AAF failed in 2019, but the XFL’s innovative rule changes should keep things interesting.

Kasen Williams confident Dragons will have the best fans in the XFL

Former Seahawks receiver Kasen Williams believes the Dragons, Seattle’s new XFL team, will have the best fanbase in the league.

For the last decade, the Seattle Seahawks have been synonymous with a handful of things: the Legion of Boom, Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson and the 12’s.

The fanbase has been known as one of the loudest and rowdiest in the NFL, making CenturyLink Field a dreaded place to play for opponents.

Even though the Seahawks season is over, the 12’s still have plenty of opportunities to bring the noise to CenturyLink this Spring with the inaugural XFL season coming up.

The first home game for the Seattle Dragons is February 15, and former Seahawks receiver Kasen Williams knows the crowd is going to bring it, just like they always do.

“We’re gonna have the fans,” Williams said after Friday’s practice. “They’re gonna show out. We’re probably gonna have the best fanbase in the whole XFL. I told them get ready. It’s not gonna feel like an XFL game, when we go play away and we come back home it’s going to be a completely different vibe.”

Williams is one of six former Seahawks who is now suiting up for the Dragons, a list that includes receiver Keenan Reynolds, quarterback B.J. Daniels and tackle Isaiah Battle.

Williams also played his college ball at the University of Washington, and could not be happier to continue his playing career in Seattle.

“Gratitude (is) through the roof,” Williams said. “I’m just extremely grateful to be here. I could have been playing anywhere. The fact that I’m here and the story gets to continue to be told in Seattle, it’s dope.”

Williams played for the Seahawks in 2015 and 2016, appearing in three games, before starring in the 2017 preseason and still, to the surprise of many, getting cut on September 1. He ended up with the Browns, hauling in nine catches in his most recent NFL action.

Now, Williams hopes to resurrect his career in the XFL, with the stated goal of making his way back into the league.

But first, he wants to help establish the Dragons as the team to beat in the eight-team XFL, something he believes is very doable after seeing the other teams in camp.

“I feel confident in our team,” Williams said. “I think we’re gonna have a good squad, I really do. The way we stack up to our opponents, I think we’re gonna have the opportunity to really make a splash in this league for it being the first year. We can really be one of the teams that gives the XFL a good rap.”

The Dragons will begin their season on Saturday, February 8 in Washington, DC against the Defenders at 2:00 p.m. PT.

Their home opener will be a week later against the Tampa Bay Vipers, also at 2:00 p.m. PT.
