What’s Going To Happen

Utah State just has to keep winning.

It needs a little help to take the Mountain Division, but it still gets Boise State – that’s next – and it needs to win this week to get bowl eligible. Lose, and then it’ll get scary if it can’t get by the Broncos.

Wyoming is already bowl eligible, and it’s still sort of in the Mountain title hunt, but for now, it’s about getting a few more wins just to be assured of a decent bowl slot.

Can the Aggies slow down the Wyoming running game?

They were ripped up by Air Force and allowed 200 yards or more in three of the last five games, and lost all three. They’re now 0-4 when giving up 160 yards or more on the ground, and 5-0 when they allow fewer.

The Wyoming style isn’t sexy, but it works. When it runs for more than 160 yards, it’s 6-0 – and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

Utah State will never have the ball – it’s last in the nation in time of possession – and it’s going to have a problem with the tremendous Wyoming pass rush.

The Cowboys get it done on the road.

Air Force at Colorado State

7 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN2 | Get Tickets
Line: Air Force -10 | Staff Picks

Final Score: Air Force 38, Colorado State 21

Recap:

The Rams let Air Force hang around for too long. While an Air Force fumble on their opening drive led to a 63 yard scoop and score for linebacker Mohamed Kamara, the Rams were unable to capitalize on solid defensive performance early.

The insult to injury was the 99 yard pick six by Air Force defensive back Zane Lewis as O’Brien was trying to pull Colorado State within a score late in the fourth quarter.

After going up 14-0, the Rams were then outscored 38-7 and likely saw their slim bowl game chances disappear into the cold Fort Collins night.

New Mexico at Boise State

10:15 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN2 | Get Tickets
Line: Boise State -28 | Staff Picks

Final Score: Boise State 42, New Mexico 9

Recap:

On the Boise State front, this was a good game to try to get everything going right before playing traveling to take on Utah State and a rising Colorado State team. For New Mexico, this was a chance to just get back to some normalcy after tragedy struck the team a week ago.  The Broncos got off to a fast start with Chase Hatada striping the ball from New Mexico quarterback Tevaka Salanoa-Tuioti that was ran back by Sonatane Lui for a touchdown. Boise State followed that with three more in the first quarter to break out to a 28-0 lead. Issues with consistency arose in the second quarter when Jaylon Henderson, Boise State’s third starter at quarterback this season, struggled and threw an interception and fumbled on back to back drives. Once the Broncos scored two more times in the second half, preservation was the goal and most of the starters started to get phased out of the game.

Realizing it’s New Mexico’s defense, the Broncos moved the ball well with Henderson at quarterback, but there were some spots in the game where execution was lacking.  Henderson did well throwing for almost 300 yards and 3 touchdowns while having the 1 interception. Defensive lineman Sonatane Lui put on another great game recovering 2 fumbles, one of which he returned for a touchdown, while on offense Khalil Shakir caught and threw for a touchdown and tallied 100 total yards.

It wasn’t all good though as STUD Curtis Weaver left the field late in the second half and was later seen in a boot.  Also, Hank Bachmeier and Chase Cord didn’t see any action and George Holani and Robert Mahone saw limited action. Mahone had a knee brace on and didn’t look to be healthy on the few carries he had and Holani didn’t appear to have an issue so it was likely due to the game getting out of reach of New Mexico quickly.

While it could have been cleaner, this was the kind of performance that the Broncos were looking for from the game.  This should help the offense build its confidence going into a tough final two games of the season.

For the first time all year the top two spots are unanimous

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Boise State and Air Force are at the top

The top two spots are non-negotiable this week and they both come from the same division. Boise State sits at the top with all of the first-place votes and then Air Force comes in next with all voters choosing those two teams as their first and second choice.

The Falcons moved up from three to two and the Broncos took the top spot all to themselves after defeating Wyoming and also San Diego State dropping a game to Nevada.

The Aztecs drop from two to the fourth spot with Wyoming moving up one spot to No. 3 despite losing in overtime to Boise State. The rest of the rankings see a mishmash of teams jumping up or down one spot.

Trophy week!

Teams are fighting for bowl eligibility

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 12th week of Mountain West football in what we are dubbing “trophy week” as so many games have a trophy on the line this weekend. Things get started with the Old Oil Can as Fresno State takes on San Diego State on a Friday night game. The Bulldogs need two wins to become bowl eligible and this a game that might be close than some think.
On Saturday the UNLV Rebels host the Hawaii Warriors for what we call the “Golden Pineapple” which is far superior compared to the “Ninth Island Showdown.” Wyoming and Utah State battle for Bridger’s rifle in what could be a defensive showdown, Colorado State is fighting for bowl eligibility vs. Air Force for the Ram-Falcon trophy. The final game of the day does not have a trophy on the line as Boise State takes on New Mexico.

Cowboys return home after rough road loss; Titans won’t be a walk in the park either

WHO: CSU Fullerton (0-2) vs. Wyoming (1-1)

WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7pm (MST)

WHERE: Laramie, WY • Arena-Auditorium (11,612)

TV: MW Network

Live Broadcast: Live Audio

SERIES RECORD: Wyoming leads the series 5-0.

ODDS: Wyoming -2

Preview

In the sixth meeting of these two squads, both look to get back into a winning rhythm. The Titans will look to find its first win of the season, while the Cowboys want to bounce back from being stifled by South Carolina over the weekend.

Here are three keys to a Wyoming win tonight in the Double-A:

Be Aggressive

The Cowboy’s presence on the block has not been strong in its first two games of the season. They have been out-rebounded 71-49 with South Carolina doubling Wyoming’s output on Sunday with 41.

Hunter Thompson is averaging four rebounds more a contest this season at 6.5 rpg. However, the six-foot-ten forward is only averaging 3.5 points a game. While his presence is growing down low on the boards, the eight points per game from last season are missing. Along with sophomore Austin Mueller, Thompson will be needed to take more attempts on the block in order to get the Cowboys off to a solid start.

Wyoming has been without Tyler Mormon (6-foot-9, Jr.) who has been in concussion protocol since the exhibition game on Oct. 30th. If Mormon can make it back tonight, it could give the Cowboys another option in the frontcourt.

Hendricks Sighting

After bursting for over 20 points in the exhibition, senior guard Jake Hendricks has gone cold. He’s hitting just 20-percent from beyond the arc and averaging just three points an outing.

The reality is, he’s taken nine shots and made two of them to start the season. Hendricks was picked to be a breakout player for the Cowboys this season. He’ll need to have more attempts in order to have an impact not just on tonight’s game against the Titans, but looking ahead to the rest of the season.

Rely on the D

The Cowboys held Idaho State to the lowest point total for a Wyoming team in over 50 years. And South Carolina just looked that impressive with their trio of guards putting up double digits each.

So, maybe the 66 points against the Gamecocks is an outlier and tonight will be another night for the Cowboys to display what their strength will be this season.

Against Idaho State, Wyoming scored 15 points off turnovers.

The Titans have three guards averaging double digits, with senior Austen Awosika leading scorers with 12.9 ppg.

Prediction:

Wyoming 55, CSU Fullerton 53

Mountain West Wire’s Player of The Year Watch List: Week One

We are tracking each Mountain West performance of this week to determine the player of the year.

[jwplayer 18QegcJn-sNi3MVSU]

Mountain West Wire’s Player of The Year Watch List: Week One

Take A Look At Who Played Well for Mountain West Teams In Week One.

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

Who is in the running for Player of the Year?

The staff at the Mountain West Wire wanted to do something a little different this year. We are going to keep track of the top performers from teams around the Mountain West throughout the year and vote on who had the best performances that week.

How It Works:

Each person will award 15 points in total to five players and should award it as so:

1st place (Player of the week): 5 pts

2nd place: 4 pts

3rd place: 3 pts

4th place: 2 pts

5th place: 1 pt

The player with the most points total will be our player of the week and we will keep track of the point totals every week so that the player who has the most at the end of the year will receive the Mountain West Wire Player of the Year award. Just copy the players below and type your names above it like we do for the pick them docs we get and award your points.

Now some guys made the list and others didn’t. A big thing to think about was consistency throughout the week. Something that hurt some guys was having a decent game one day and a bad one the other day. Guys who made the list had a great game one day and a good one on other days, or good games both days.

This column will come out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings depending on how late some games finish on Sundays.

The order for the first week is as follows:

1. Lindsey Drew, senior guard Nevada (5 points):

30 Points 8 Assists 6 Rebounds against Utah

24 Points 9 Rebounds 7 Assists against Loyola Marymount

2. Derrick Alston Jr, junior guard BSU (4 points):

25 Points 5 Rebounds 4 Assists against Life-Pacific

28 Points 2 Rebounds against Oregon

3. Amauri Hardy, junior guard UNLV (3 points):

15 Points 6 Assists 5 Rebounds against Purdue Fort-Wayne

27 Points 4 Rebounds 3 Assists against Kansas State

4. Jordan Schakel, junior guard SDSU (2 points):

15 Points 4 Rebounds 2 Assists against Texas Southern

19 Points 5 Rebounds against Brigham Young

5. Sam Merrill, senior guard USU (1 point):

28 Points 5 Rebounds 3 Assists against Montana State

14 Points 6 Rebounds 6 Assists against Weber State

Each Mountain West Team’s Opponents for Week Two

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

Take a look at each team’s opponents for this week and how they did last week.

We seek to take a look at each team’s opponents for the next week while also taking a look at their performance the previous week. These should be coming out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings going forward until the end of non-conference play depending on possible late night games on Sunday or not. And then traditional previews will take over since with conference play comes more familiarity with opponents.

Air Force Falcons

Tues, Nov. 12th

Army Black Knights:

Coach K’s alma mater is 1-1 on the season but that lone win comes against the US Merchant Marine Academy. That lone loss came at the hands of 10th ranked Villanova by 43 points. They are led by senior guard Tommy Funk who is averaging 13.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 4.5 APG. These military academy games mean a lot to these schools and I look forward to the Falcons taking the Black Knights on at home.

Boise State Broncos

Fri, Nov. 15th

California-Irvine Anteaters:

The Anteaters will face a familar face to Boise State fans in Life-Pacific on Tuesday. But after that they take on Boise State in The Taco Bell Arena on Friday. Irvine is 1-1 so far downing San Diego on opening night and losing to Pepperdine on Saturday by 3 points in Malibu. UC-Irvine is led by senior guard Evan Leonard who is averaging 19.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 2.0 APG through two games.

Colorado State Rams

Wed, Nov. 13th

Omaha Mavericks:

The Mavericks are 1-1 on the season but have not won against a division one team thus far. They are led by junior guard Ayo Akinwole who is averaging 16.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 7.0 APG through two games and has junior forward Matt Pile who is averaging a double-double (14.0 PPG and 12.0 RPG).

Sat, Nov. 16th

Loyola Marymount Lions:

Loyola Marymount is coming off of a close loss to Nevada in Reno on Saturday which put them at 1-1 on the season. Eli Scott was the guy on Saturday but the Lions are actually led by sophomore forward Ivan Alipiev who is leading the team with 19.0 PPG and 7.5 RPG.

Fresno State Bulldogs

Tues, Nov. 12th

San Diego Torreros:

San Diego is in a bit of a rebuild after losing a talented group of seniors last year. They are 0-2 on the season and are led by sophomore guard Joey Calcaterra, who is averaging 16.0 PPG in both losses.

Sun, Nov. 17th

California State University San Bernardino Coyotes:

The Bulldogs take on an undefeated Coyotes team who have two wins against division two opponents. They are led by senior guard Jeremy Smith who is averaging 26 PPG through week one.

Nevada Wolf Pack

Tues, Nov. 12th

Texas-Arlington Mavericks:

The Mavericks are off to a great 2-0 start including a 14 point win against Tulsa on Saturday. Watch out for senior forward Jabari Narcis who is averaging 11.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG and 2.0 BPG. If he has a big night in the paint, the Wolf Pack don’t have enough front court depth to keep him in check.

Sat, Nov. 16th

Southern California Trojans:

As Andy Enfield’s seat started to get a bit hot in Los Angeles he went out and got one of the best recruiting classes in the last decade for the Trojans and it’s paying off. His team is being led by his two five star freshman Isaiah Mobley and Onyeka Okongwu, and Big O is showing dominant play while averaging a double-double (20.0 PPG and 11.5 RPG).

New Mexico Lobos

Wed, Nov. 13th

Green Bay Phoenix:

The Phoenix are 1-1 on the season after a 51 point win against Wisconsin-Stout and a loss at Purdue. Watch out for freshman guard Amari Davis who averaged 12.5 PPG in last weeks action and junior guard PJ Pipes who is averaging 2.5 SPG.

Sat, Nov. 16th

Mcneese State Cowboys:

The cowboys are 0-2 on the season and face Wisconsin on Wednesday before taking on the Lobos on Saturday. Look out for junior guard AJ Lawson who averaged 17.5 PPG in two games against Western Michigan and Louisiana Lafayette.

Wyoming Cowboys fall to Boise State, 20-17

The defense was there for Wyoming but they did not have it all to defeat Boise State.

Broncos Top Cowboys In Overtime

Wyoming came close but didn’t make enough plays to finish on top

Contact/Follow @jessetachiquin & @MWCwire

In a game that was much closer than Vegas predicted, the Cowboys turned the matchup against the favored Broncos into more of a parking lot brawl. Despite trailing for much of the game, Boise State did just enough to steal the game late.

Tyler Vander Waal is going to be fine

In his first start of the season, the sophomore went 15-23 for 160 yards. It was a performance that was good enough for Wyoming to leave Boise with the W. On Wyoming’s final drive of the game, Vander Waal led the Pokes on a 10 play, 5-minute drive to get the team near scoring position before a failed 4th down conversion gave Boise State one final chance. Should he be able to replicate and possibly improve on his performance in the final 3 weeks, the Cowboys still have a shot at a 10-win season.

Where are the playmakers?

Xazavian Valladay provided a hard-earned 124 rushing yards on 37 attempts and TE Josh Harshman added a solid 6 receptions for 48 yards but WR’s Austin Conway and Rocket Ismail Jr. only combined to add 4 catches for 57 yards. Conway had a nice punt return early in the game that led to a score and Ismail Jr. had an 18-yard reception on a nifty run after the catch but it’s hard to explain the lack of touches they get from week to week. It would be great to see them get more opportunities to make plays especially with the running back depth essentially down to one man.  It’s hard watching the Cowboys crash Valladay into a wall 37 times when Conway and Rocket Jr. have shown how explosive they can be in the open field.

The Defense Was Phenomenal

Aside from the opening drive of the game when Boise State opened up the playbook and threw everything at them, they completely dominated the game. The defensive line owned the line of scrimmage and Logan Wilson had one of the better games he’s had this season with 10 tackles, a sack, and a game-saving INT at the end of the 4th quarter. While the Broncos were also starting a backup quarterback, they have more weapons than any team left on the Cowboys schedule.

The Chambers injury seemed to slow the bandwagon that has grown with the team this season but the Pokes showed that they have the formula to compete regardless of who suits up and who they line up against. Utah State, Colorado State, and Air Force have challenges that Wyoming will need to overcome but there is no reason to think that the Cowboys won’t be up to the task.
