North Carolina vs Duke Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heels played a little … defense?

No, not really in the 27-24 win over Miami – they gave up 538 yards – but they held firm when they had to. It’s a low bar, but that’s the goal for the Tar Heel D – just hold serve and let the offense do the rest.

Drake Maye continues to be one of the brightest young quarterback stars in the ACC, the running game is chipping in a little to help out, and after all of the drama and all of the close calls and all of the problems on defense, the team is 5-1.

Duke couldn’t get the O going until it was way too late in a puzzling loss to Georgia The. The attack that was so good over the first month fizzled, but the bigger problem here is the lack of a pass rush to help out the secondary.

There’s a big problem when teams don’t get pressure on Maye, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Duke Will Win

The North Carolina defense. It really is the cure for offenses that need a pick-me-up.

It’s the worst in the ACC by a mile, the pass defense has issues, and overall it’s allowing 465 yards and 32 points per game.

Duke has enough of a passing attack to take advantage of it all. As long as the offense isn’t turning the ball over – and it doesn’t – it should be able to get its production back.

Keeping the chains moving and keeping Maye and company off the field is a must, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Duke has the one defense in the ACC that’s worse on third downs than North Carolina.

Duke will get a big day from the offense, but the defensive side that hasn’t dealt with a high-powered attack – Kansas sort of counts, but doesn’t – is about to have a long day.

Both teams got bogged down a wee bit last week. In this the points will flow in a fun back-and-forth rivalry game. North Carolina will get just a bit more out of the attack for a full 60 minutes.

San Jose State vs Fresno State Game Preview

Why San Jose State Will Win

The Spartans just flexed their muscles a little bit.

They were good in wins over Western Michigan and Wyoming, and then UNLV came into town. Beating the Rebels might not seem like that big of a deal, but they were playing well, they wanted to prove a point, and …

San Jose State won 40-7. It ran well, threw well, and the defense stuffed everything.

Razor sharp with just one turnover so far this year and with penalties not a problem, they’re holding up great defensively, the secondary has been wonderful, and the offense manages to do what’s needed to stay ahead after getting a little momentum.

Fresno State QB Jake Haener has been out, the Bulldog offense has stalled ever since, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Fresno State Will Win

The team is better than this.

It still has yet to beat an FBS team this season, and losing Haener didn’t help, but there’s still talent across the board.

For all of the issues, turnovers aren’t a huge problem, the defense is starting to force a few more big plays, and being back at home should matter.

At USC, then all the way across the country to UConn, then back to Boise State. There hasn’t been a game in Fresno since the crushing late loss to Oregon State on September 10th.

The team is playing like it needed to be back around in familiar surroundings – it needs get its energy back, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Fresno State will have a hard time stopping Chevan Cordeiro.

The former Hawaii quarterback brought his experience and playmaking ability to the Spartans, and so far he’s been the best player in the Mountain West.

He ran for two scores in each of the last two games and is good enough as a passer. He hasn’t been accurate enough and he’s not amazing at moving the chains on third downs, but he has yet to throw a pick and he’s good for at least 250 yards in this against the Fresno State secondary.

The Bulldogs will be better than they’ve been, but that won’t be good enough. San Jose State is playing too well and Fresno State isn’t.

Charlotte vs UAB Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

What can Charlotte do to turn its season around?

The offense has been fun. The passing attack has been terrific with QB Chris Reynolds back and rolling. He threw for over 400 yards and five scores in the win over Georgia State, and two weeks ago he threw for four scores and 347 yards in the loss to UTEP.

UAB’s pass defense has been solid, but it hasn’t dealt with a slew of top passing attacks. As long as Reynolds gets time he’ll go off, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why UAB Will Win

Reynolds might have to hurry a bit against a good UAB pass rush. That’s not the problem – the yards will be there.

The 49er defense is the second-worst in college football mostly because the run defense isn’t slowing anyone down.

It’s not just that the front is getting gouged for big dashes; it’s getting pounded on. It’s allowing 5.8 yards per carry and giving up over 200 yards in five of the six games and 193 to Maryland in the other one.

UAB’s running game is kicking in huge, ripping through Middle Tennessee for over 300 and getting to 230 yards in four of the five games, so …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Be stunned if UAB doesn’t have 225 rushing yards getting off the bus.

It’s going to start running and keep running until Charlotte proves it can come up with a stop.

The 49ers will get enough passing yards to make the Blazers keep pressing, and that won’t be a problem.

Utah State vs Colorado State Game Preview

Why Utah State Will Win

Yeah, Colorado State got a win last week over Nevada. It’s impossible to figure out how.

The passing game was a disaster – just 78 yards – the three turnovers didn’t help, and the offense was outgained by more than 100 yards. It got the job done, but the team still has issues that go beyond just finding a way to win.

The Rams have a tough run at quarterback with injuries a huge problem. Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi gave it a shot, but he struggled.

Utah State doesn’t generate a pass rush, but it’s great at coming up with tackles for loss, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Colorado State Will Win

Speaking of pulling wins out of nowhere, Utah State somehow managed to stop Air Force just enough to come up with a shocking 34-27 win. Sort of like Colorado State’s win over Nevada, that win for the Aggies doesn’t mean the other problems aren’t still there.

The Utah State passing game throws way too many interceptions, giving up a nation-high 12 so far. The offense doesn’t convert on third downs, the defense can’t stop them, and the run defense can be hammered on by anyone who commits to doing it.

Colorado State hadn’t hit 100 rushing yards all year, and then it powered away for 177 against Nevada. The O needs another good performance from Avery Morrow.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s going to take a massive step to possibly turn the season around?

In an awful year for the Mountain West, just about every game is winnable. The loser’s bowl hopes are all but gone, and the winner will be on a two-game winning streak with some real, live momentum.

Both teams will turn it over too much, and neither defense will be anything special. It’s not going to be pretty, but Utah State will take it – the passing game will be a little better than anything the Rams can do.

Miami vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

The Hurricanes can fix this.

It’s been a rough three game losing streak, but the offense threw well against North Carolina – okay, so that’s hardly difficult to do – and the ground game worked against Texas A&M.

The pass rush is great, the special teams are solid, and the team is good at controlling the time of possession battle.

So what’s the problem? Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

The Hurricanes aren’t able to overcome adversity in any way over the last three games. Penalties aren’t an issue, but the seven giveaways have been a killer.

That’s where Virginia Tech’s defense comes in – it doesn’t take the ball away. It forced two fumbles in the loss to Old Dominion in the opener, and it came up with just three takeaways over the next five games.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies can fix this.

It’s been a rough three game losing streak, but the turnovers have slowed since the disastrous opener against ODU and the defense is the best in the ACC at coming up with third down stops.

So what’s the problem? The little things – like scoring.

Penalties were a killer against West Virginia, the inability to take the ball away has been a huge problem and – for this program – the special teams haven’t been good enough.

More than anything else the offense is having a hard time converting drives into points. Miami’s secondary can be thrown on, it’s not picking off passes, and in this it’s up to Grant Wells to come up with a brilliant performance at home to pull this off.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like these two teams don’t know how to put the puzzle together.

The two new head coaches are going to need a little while. Brent Pry’s Hokies don’t have any one thing they can do well, but it feels like one big win might be able to flip a switch.

It’s not happening this week.

Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes are way overdue to come up with something big.

The defense will keep the Hokies from running, Wells won’t be able to do enough to keep the attack moving late, and the slide will stop.

Memphis vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

Everything was going great for Memphis. It was on a roll with a four game winning streak, and it had Houston down 29-13 in the fourth before a monster comeback led to a 33-32 loss.

Even with the disaster, the offense did a good job over the last several weeks, the special teams have been great, and the team is winning the turnover battle.

The Tigers have only turned it over four times this year – there haven’t been multiple giveaways in any game – and the defense is great at generating takeaways.

East Carolina isn’t above turning it over. After the loss to Tulane last week, it’s 0-3 now when giving it up multiple times and 3-0 when it doesn’t.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why East Carolina Will Win

Here comes the Pirate passing game.

East Carolina’s offense isn’t quite as explosive as it should be, but it’s effective enough to be great at keeping the chains moving and it’s averaging well over 300 yards per game.

Memphis doesn’t generate a lick of pressure, and Holton Ahlers is good enough to take advantage of it. Give the veteran time to work, and he’ll be deadly.

On the other side, the Tiger offensive front is struggling to keep defenses out of the backfield, the running game stalls a bit too much, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a blast.

Both offenses will trade big shots, the passing games should work, and the defenses will struggle against the hot quarterbacks.

East Carolina will be a bit better on third downs with two late scoring drives to pull out the thriller.

James Madison vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

The run defense continues to be the best in the county.

Texas State was able to run for 106 yards, but that’s been it against a D that so far has allowed 205 yards in five games.

The Dukes are making a ton of plays in the backfield, the offense is dominating the time of possession battle, and everything is working on both sides of the ball.

Appalachian State is the only team to come close to taking down the new FBS program.

Georgia Southern wants to throw more than run, but the offensive side isn’t the issue. The worst run defense in the Sun Belt is the concern against an efficient JMU offense that hit 200 rushing yards against everyone but Appalachian State.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Georgia Southern’s offensive line has been terrific.

It’s solid for the ground game, the pass protection is as good as any team in the country, and the attack knows how to get things moving. Everything sets up perfectly for what the No. 1 offense in the Sun Belt does – run well enough, hit the third down opportunities, play with a good pace.

Last week the Eagles lost to rival Georgia State on turnovers – there were four picks to go along with a lost fumble. As amazing as James Madison’s defense is, it doesn’t come up with a ton of interceptions.

Limit the mistakes, control the lines, and have a shot because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Other than Appalachian State, James Madison’s defense hasn’t faced anyone who’s all that dangerous. Georgia Southern has the offense to press and keep pressing.

However, the Eagles couldn’t get the win against a Coastal Carolina offense that control the tempo, and they’ve struggled overall against good passing teams. They’re allowing well over 300 yards in three of the last five games and gave up over 600 combined rushing yards in the other two against UAB and Georgia State.

James Madison’s defense will have a tough afternoon, but the offense will make up for it.

Results So Far: 41-29-1

What have you shown us?

We’re halfway through the season and now we’ve got enough of a sample size to have a good feel about just how good and bad these teams are.

This week I’m staying away from the games that don’t feel right and I’m going with what we know. Oh no, trap games. You’re not fooling me like you did with Oklahoma getting a ton of points last week.

I’d love to go with Bama. Pick against the Tide ATS when everyone is assuming a layup – like last week against Texas A&M – and go with them when the world questions the greatness. However, I’m not 100% sure Tennessee can’t pull this off outright. I’m staying away.

I do know what Clemson is, and I love giving away just 3.5 to Florida State, but something just doesn’t feel right. FSU might have the right mix at home.

So with that in mind, these are all about what we’ve been able to see, what we know, and what – for the most part – we can prove.

In other words, it’s time to go with the annual bit.

You’re a good person. You pay your taxes, keep the toilet seat down, and tip generously. You do things the right way, and that’s why you deserve these 10 picks.

If they don’t work, it’s not our fault. Any wrong call here means something glitched in the matrix – like Nevada-Colorado State last week; more on that later – so with that, we start with the only point total pick of the week …

Click on each game for the preview

10. Arizona at Washington

POINT TOTAL 73
PICK Under

I shouldn’t have to tell you by now what to do with point total around 35, a spread of 50 or more, or a point total over the 70s.

As I’ll keep repeating, it’s really, really, really hard for two teams to get past 70. One team could bonk, there could be a slew of turnovers, a starting quarterback could get the sniffles, whatever.

The advice is to always take the under, enjoy the game, and if it goes over you’ve paid for the enjoyment of an entertaining shootout.

Start with this – Washington is back home. Just assume the team will find some semblance of a D again after a disastrous two-game road trip to UCLA and Arizona State. It’s very, very doubtful it’ll give up 40 to the Wildcats.

Arizona has only been rocked when the turnovers are flowing – three against Mississippi State, Cal, and Oregon – but Washington’s D is hit-or-miss on takeaways. The UW O should hit 40, the D should give up 20ish, and this should push to 70 and stall.

9. Auburn at Ole Miss

LINE Ole Miss -15
ATS PICK Ole Miss

This spot worked just find for the Georgia pick ATS over Auburn last week, so I’m riding with it. Again with the theme for this week …

What do we know? Auburn can’t score.

It hasn’t pushed past 17 in over a month, it’s putting too much stress on an otherwise solid defense, and things are starting to slip.

The Ole Miss offense might have struggled to put away Tulsa and Kentucky, but the running game has been wonderful and the defense has been stunningly okay.

Considering the Auburn run defense is buckling, and knowing the offense will have to go against type to push past 17, Ole Miss scoring 33 or more for the fourth time in five games should work.

Again, going with what we know so far …

8. Cal at Colorado

LINE Cal -15
ATS PICK Cal

I know. I KNOW. I’m with you. It’s scary to buy into Cal considering it struggled against UNLV, just got dropped by Washington State 28-9, and only has one great performance in a 49-31 win over Arizona.

We’ll get through this together.

What has Colorado shown you to suggest it can stay with anyone, much less a decent team like Cal? Granted, it had two weeks off to take a deep breath after firing head coach Karl Dorrell, but Cal is coming off a bye, too.

First, the Buffs have yet to come closer than 23 in any of its five games. Second, it’s dead last in the nation at stopping third downs, dead last against the run, and it’s the second-worst team in scoring D. Third, it’s going to take turnovers to pull this off, and Cal hasn’t given any up in the last three games and has just two mistakes all year.

Until this Colorado ATS train stops, we’ll stay on.

Like Auburn and Colorado, there’s another team that showed you what it appears to be …

[lawrence-related id=552745]

7. Miami at Virginia Tech

LINE Miami -7
ATS PICK Miami

Oh, I am well aware of Miami’s ability to underwhelm, and I don’t blame you one bit for either staying away or going the other direction here.

Over the last three weeks the Hurricanes have developed a brutal habit of playing up or down to its competition and then managing to lose. There’s one big reason why this time might be different.

Miami’s biggest issue is turnovers, and Virginia Tech doesn’t take the ball away.

At least the Canes have been close. They couldn’t stop screwing up against Middle Tennessee, and the O worked just fine in the loss to North Carolina.

The Hokie defense has been too awful over the last three games. The team didn’t cover the 14.5 against Pitt, got rocked by 31 against North Carolina, and got rolled over by West Virginia.

Here’s the advice. Hold your nose, go with Miami, forget you did, go do something else with your Saturday, and hope there’s a nice surprise waiting for you when you get home.

[lawrence-related id=552735]

6. Wisconsin at Michigan State

LINE Wisconsin -7.5
ATS PICK Wisconsin

There’s no reason to throw any parades for anyone who beat Northwestern 42-7, but after the brutal loss to Illinois and the firing of Paul Chryst, Wisconsin might have perked up a bit under Jim Leonhard.

But this is more about Michigan State.

The Spartans can throw – always be leery of what decent passing games with talent can do against Wisconsin – but the run defense has been awful over the last three games against Minnesota, Maryland, and Ohio State. Washington didn’t run on MSU partly because Michael Penix Jr. was too busy throwing for close to 400 yards.

1) Think about liking the under on the 42, but I’m not going with it only because I’m nervous the Badgers might come close to hitting that themselves if everything goes off the rails. 2) Michigan State hasn’t come closer than 14 against anyone in the last four games, and 3) it’s one of the worst teams in the country in time of possession.

You don’t control the ball against the Badgers, you’re never going to see your O on the field.

Warning. Outside of one game I’m going B-side deep cuts on these next picks, starting with …

Northern Illinois vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

The Huskies can still run the ball.

They might be having a ton of turnover problems, and the defense is struggling, but the defending MAC champion is averaging 4.6 yards per carry and can keep things moving on third downs.

Eastern Michigan might be doing a decent job lately, but start running on this bunch and good things happen. Buffalo was able to win with over 200 yards on the ground and four scores, Louisiana was able to throw, and NIU is versatile enough

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Northern Illinois is struggling.

Granted, the schedule hasn’t been a breeze, but the six turnovers over the last two games have ben a killer, the defense can’t stop anyone from throwing well, and Eastern Michigan has its guy back.

The offense struggles for a few games, and then QB Taylor Powell was back and it all clicked in the 45-23 win over Western Michigan. As long as the passing game hits the 60% mark, and as long there aren’t a slew of turnovers to give NIU easy chances, the Eagles should be okay.

What’s Going To Happen

Northern Illinois is overdue for a brilliant performance, but it’s been waiting to break through for a while.

Eastern Michigan will be fine as long as it keeps the Huskie offense from going off. Keep it from being balanced, and keep it from getting to 450 yards, and all should be fine.

The EMU passing game should keep the chains moving and take control of the game at home.

Tulane at USF Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

The offense is showing its versatility.

It ran well for the first part of the season – and had good balance with the passing game – nothing really worked until it absolutely had to in the comeback win over Houston, and then came the passing attack in a 24-9 win over East Carolina.

USF hasn’t been all that awful defensively, but it doesn’t generate enough pressure up front. The Tulane backfield is deadly when it gets time to figure out what it wants to do – getting the ground game working on the outside is good, but giving Michael Pratt time to throw is great. When he’s on, forget it.

The Bulls might not be doing much defensively, and they’re not coming up with third down stops, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why USF Will Win

The team is showing potential breakthrough moments.

It played stunningly well at Cincinnati in a 28-24 loss, it pushed Florida way too hard, and if the turnovers can stop and the running game works, it has a shot to make this a battle into the fourth.

Tulane doesn’t generate a pass rush and it’s been hit-or-miss against the run. USF has to be great on the ground. The team is competitive when it gets to 200 rushing yards, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Tulane defensive front has been too solid against the run – it only allowed 200 yards in the opener against UMass.

Kansas State, Houston, East Carolina, Southern Miss – no one else was able to get there, but USF will come close.

This is USF’s first home game since September 10th – playing four straight away from Raymond James with the hurricane playing a role in that – and it’ll be good for a while, but it won’t generate the key defensive stops to push through and pull off the upset.

The Tulane offense will be balanced on a key fourth quarter scoring drive to put this away.
