Mountain West Football: Examining Each Opponent’s Week 3 Depth Chart

Mountain West Football: Examining Each Opponent’s Week 3 Depth Chart

What stands out in the depth charts released by each of the Mountain West’s eight Week 3 non-conference opponents?

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

What to keep in mind before kickoff.

Duquesne

What stands out: After starting nearly all of last year, quarterback Darius Perrantes has taken a back seat to the athlete he replaced: Joe Mischler.

Why that could be important: Perrantes had a solid 2021 in a pinch, but it may have always been a matter of time until the job belonged to Mischler. And why not? He was a first-team all-conference selection in the FCS spring season and averaged 9.2 yards per attempt with nine touchdowns in five games, so Hawaii finding its footing on defense may not necessarily be a given.

UTEP (link to game notes, depth chart on page 5)

What stands out: With Justin Garrett and Jacob Cowing now gone, the depth chart at wide receiver is now led by Tyrin Smith, Reynaldo Flores, and Kelly Akharaiyi.

Why that could be important: In short, the Miners were one of the most explosive passing attacks anywhere in the Group of 5 last year but they’re struggled to replicate that without their two 2021 stars. Smith has seen his yards per catch average drop from 17.3 to 13.4 while Flores, though he’s already surpassed last year’s catch total with 19 so far, has seen a drop from 15.7 to 12.4.

It’s not for a lack of trying, but the New Mexico Lobos secondary could find itself in a position of strength once again on Saturday.

North Texas (link to depth chart)

What stands out: The Mean Green have talent in their front seven, but cornerback Ridge Texada has been thrust into a big spot opposite veteran DeShawn Gaddie in the secondary.

Why that could be important: If UNT has a potential Achilles heel for UNLV to exploit, it might be their porous pass defense. The Mean Green got shredded by SMU two weeks ago and even FCS Texas Southern did some damage through the air, but Texada and Gaddie have had two pass breakups each in the early going and will have their hands full with Kyle Williams, Ricky White, and company.

UT Martin (link to game notes, depth chart on page 9)

What stands out: The Skyhawks had an open quarterback competition headed into the season, but incumbent Dresser Winn currently sits atop the depth chart and started both of UTM’s first two games over Cornelious Brown IV.

Why that could be important: After ascending to the QB1 role in a tight spot late last season, Winn hasn’t made the Skyhawks regret their decision in the young season. Against Western Illinois and Missouri State, he’s completed 65.3% of his throws, averaged 8.5 yards per attempt, and throws six touchdowns against just one interception. Obviously, facing the Boise State defense marks an extra degree of difficulty or three, but UT Martin has the offensive talent to hang around on the blue if the passing game remains sharp.

GAME NOTES (PDF): Nevada | Iowa

ODDS: Iowa (-23)

SP+ PROJECTION: Iowa by 24.6

FEI PROJECTION: Iowa  (13.1)

The Nevada Wolf Pack will return to action on Saturday as they take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City.

The Wolf Pack are coming off  a poor performance in their last game against Incarnate Word. The Wolf Pack defense struggled to contain Incarnate Word’s offense and the offense could not keep pace with UIW. In the end, Nevada suffered their first loss of the season 55-41 to the Cardinals from UIW.

The Wolf Pack will look to bounce back against an Iowa team coming off a 10-7 loss to their in-state rivals Iowa State. Iowa boasts one of the best defenses and special teams units in the nation while their offense is a problem and by problem I mean horrendous.

Can the Wolf Pack get back on the winning track and score their first ever win against a Big Ten opponent on Saturday?

Here are my three keys and a prediction for Nevada vs Iowa State

Better pass protection for whoever is Nevada’s quarterback

Against Incarnate Word, the Wolf Pack struggled to protect quarterback Nate Cox. The Cardinals sacked Cox six times in the loss to UIW. The Cardinals front seven also applied several hits to Cox as well and disrupted the Nevada offense. Despite Nate Cox putting up good passing numbers, the Wolf Pack offensive line struggled to protect Cox last Saturday.

It won’t be an easy task as the Wolf Pack offensive line faces an Iowa defense that is one of the best in the nation. The Hawkeye defense is giving up an average of 81 rushing yards per game and 135.5 passing yards per game.

Another impressive stat about the Iowa defense is that it is only allowing 6.5 points per game. Through two games, this Iowa defense is once again one of the best in the nation.

For the Wolf Pack to have a chance to defeat Iowa on Saturday, the Wolf Pack must do a better job at pass protection no matter if it is Nate Cox or Shane Illingworth at QB. And also, be able to move the ball and score points against Iowa’s defense.

Clamp Down on Iowa’s Offense

Iowa’s offense in the first two weeks of this season has been for lack of better term, putrid. And I only say putrid is because I don’t want to risk it by saying a curse word to describe Iowa’s offense.

Seriously, Iowa’s offense has been bad so far this season. They did not score a touchdown in their 7-3 win over South Dakota State(the other SDSU) and only put up seven points in their 10-7 loss to Iowa State last Saturday.

In two games, the Iowa Hawkeyes have scored exactly one touchdown and that is putrid. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz announced on Tuesday that he will continue to go with QB Spencer Petras. Petras has struggled at quarterback as he has completed only 45 percent of his passess and thrown two interceptions.

For the Wolf Pack to pull off the upset, the defense must attack Iowa’s  struggling offense. Nevada’s defense struggled last week against Incarnate Word as they gave up 616 yards of offense in the loss to the Cardinals. Nevada’s defense must bounce back in a big way this week and must take advantage of a struggling Hawkeye defense.

Return to playing mistake-free football

In Nevada’s two wins, the Wolf Pack forced nine turnovers and did not turn the ball over once. In their loss to Incarnate World, Nevada turned it over twice, struggled to contain UIW’s offense, struggled to protect Nate Cox and committed 10 penalties for 78 yards.

The Wolf Pack are at their best when they are playing a clean, mistake-free brand of football and they went away from that last week. Now on the road against a Power 5 opponent in Iowa, Nevada must play an almost flawless game in order to pull off the road win. It won’t be easy as Iowa is a team that relies on their defense, special teams and playing safe football.

It is going to be a difficult task for a Nevada team coming off a poor performance last week to try to play mistake free football against Iowa. But Nevada must play clean and error free in order to win on Saturday night in Iowa City.

Prediction

In this contest between Nevada and Iowa, the Wolf Pack do have a decent chance to beat the Hawkeyes on Saturday. Iowa is one of the worst offenses in the nation as they have scored only one offensive touchdown after two games.

The Hawkeyes are starting a quarterback in Spencer Petras who has been below average running the Iowa offense. The Wolf Pack defense, coming off a poor performance against Incarnate Word, has the ability to stop the Iowa defense and make it even worse. My money is on Nevada’s defense playing better this week against the Hawkeyes/

But the big question is can Nevada’s offense move the ball and put up points against a stifling Iowa defense? Nevada, with Nate Cox at QB for the full game, did move the ball well and scored points against Incarnate Word. But no matter if it is Cox or Shane Illingworth at QB, it is going to be a tough task to score against an Iowa defense that has given up 6.5 points per game.

And that will be the reason why Nevada will not pull off the upset in Iowa City, Iowa’s defense will be too much for the Wolf Pack offense. The game will be close but in the end, the Hawkeye defense will help Iowa come away with the win.

Score Prediction: Iowa 13  Nevada 10

Los Angeles Chargers vs Kansas City Chiefs Game Preview

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win

Lost in all of the fun of the Charger offense and Justin Herbert coming up with a fabulous performance was a defense that held its own in the 24-19 win over the Raiders.

Derek Carr got his yards, Davante Adams got his catches, but the Los Angeles defense came up with three picks, held firm early, and did its job in the fourth quarter when the offense started sputtering a bit.

The Chargers have to own the clock. Patrick Mahomes got all the time he needed and wanted in the 44-21 win over Arizona, and because of it, there wasn’t any need to crank up the high-powered O. It was more methodical, but LA did the same thing against Las Vegas.

Week 2 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Kansas City Chiefs Will Win

Herbert wasn’t pressured.

The Chargers did their part to get into the backfield, but Herbert wasn’t sacked, the Raiders only got to him a few times, and he was too comfortable firing away.

Kansas City was able to bother Kyler Murray for most of the game, the defensive front held down the Cardinal running backs, and that was about it.

Mahomes spread the ball around, was able to pick and choose what he wanted to do, and he looked and played more in command than he did throughout most of the 2021 regular season.

As long as the Chief offensive line gives him time to work, everything else will be okay. However …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Khalil Mack might have other ideas.

Oh sure, he might disappear at times as the season goes on as he gets a bit banged up, but Mack is fresh, was motivated against the Raiders, and it all showed with three sacks and plenty of hits on Carr.

Now it’s his job to get to 15.

Mahomes won’t have it as easy this week – Los Angeles generated six sacks and lived behind the Vegas line – but he’ll rely on the 1-2 punch of Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire to run a bit more, and his defense will do its part with two takeaways to stall the Charges momentum.

WEEK 3: Air Force Falcons (2-0) vs. Wyoming Cowboys (2-1)

WHEN: Friday, September 16 — 6:00 PM MDT/5:00 PM PDT

WHERE: War Memorial Stadium; Laramie, WY

TV: CBS Sports Network

RADIO: The Wyoming broadcast can be found throughout the state on the affiliates of the Cowboy Sports Network, including flagship 1240 AM (KFBC) in Cheyenne.

SERIES RECORD: Air Force leads the all-time series 30-26-3

WEBSITES:GoAirForceFalcons.com the official website of Air Force Athletics | GoWyo.com, the official Wyoming Athletics website.

ODDS: Air Force -15

[lawrence-related id=47572]

The Wyoming Cowboys are facing a quick turn around this week as the Air Force Academy rolls in to Laramie on Friday. The series between the Cowboys and the Falcons dates back to 1957, with the series being one of the closest for both schools. The Falcons hold the overall advantage 30-26-3. Since Craig Bohl became the head coach of the Cowboys, Wyoming leads the series 4-3. Additionally, Air Force has not won in Laramie since the now infamous “Howdy Doody” game in 2012.

Wyoming has bounced back after an embarrassing loss to Illinois in Week 0, by following it up with two wins in two weeks. The Cowboys now turn their eyes to a team in Air Force that is very different than any of the three teams that the Cowboys have faced thus far this season. Tulsa and Northern Colorado are very pass happy teams, where Air Force has perfected the triple option and averages over 500 yards per game rushing. The Cowboys will need to be tough and disciplined to hang with this Air Force team.

Three Keys to a Cowboy Victory

1. Contain Brad Roberts and Haaziq Daniels.

Brad Roberts has been nothing short of impressive to start the season. The Senior Running Back is averaging a blistering 9.0 yards per carry, and has scored 4 touchdowns to start the season. Against Colorado this past week Roberts gashed the Buffalos for 174 yards and 3 touchdowns. Roberts is the most used player on the Air Force offense, but not far behind Roberts is Quarterback Haaziq Daniels. Daniels is averaging 68 yards per game on the ground and is just as dynamic a rusher as Roberts. Daniels is averaging 5.5 passing attempts per game, and only completing 2 per game, that being said Daniels is averaging over 12 yards per passing attempt, and has the ability to take the top off a defense given the opportunity.

The Cowboys defense has been good against the run this year. Only allowing 111 rushing yards per game. Over the past two weeks, however, the Cowboys have only allowed 76 total yards on the ground total. If the Cowboys defense can slow down Haaziq Daniels and Brad Roberts the way they have slowed down the rush the past few weeks it will be the best chance that the Cowboys have to win.

2. Win the Battle on Third Down.

It is no secret that the Falcons recipe for success is dominating the time of possession in a game. Last year in Colorado Springs the Falcons had the ball for 23 minutes in the first half versus less than 7 minutes total of possession for the Cowboys. A big part of how the Falcons were able to own the time of possession over the Cowboys was their ability to lengthen drives by going 7 of 16 on third down and 3 for 4 on 4th downs to extend drives. The Wyoming Defense will need to be better this year to give their offense a chance to keep up with the Falcons.

3. Extend Drives.

If the Cowboys are going to come out on top on Friday it will be by extending drives past the first set of downs. Over the past two weeks the Cowboys have scored on 11 of 15 drives that went past the first set of downs. The Cowboys have found success on those drives by varying the play calls and airing out the ball more.

Last week, Andrew Peasley was named the Mountain West Offensive player of the week, and the Cowboys are going to need another effort worthy of Offensive Player of the Week from Peasley. Peasley had a big game against the Falcons last year when he helped lead Utah State to a win over Air Force. The other key cog of the Cowboy offense is Titus Swen. Over the past two weeks, Titus has been dealing with bruised ribs and his role has been diminished, however he did score 3 touchdowns against Northern Colorado, and looked stronger as the game went on. If Titus Swen feeling good, he makes the Cowboys offense that much more Dangerous.

Final Thoughts

The Cowboys are a 15 point home underdog to the Falcons, but the Falcons have not been able to come away with a win in Laramie for 10 years. I am predicting this trend to continue, with Andrew Peasley and Titus Swen both having big games, and Wyoming pulling off the upset.

Prediction

Wyoming 30, Air Force 28

The Mountain West is all over the place with who we think is good, or not good. There were a lot of losses this week like Fresno State coming up short against Oregon State, Nevada falling to Incarnate Word, Colorado State and Utah State.

These rankings were very difficult to find a clear order but we are still early in the season and this week might provide some more clarity of a pecking order after three or so games this season. That will just make this conference season much more interesting and fun.

The one clear thing we know is that Air Force tops the rankings with all but one first-place vote, and Fresno State took one of the votes.

Before we get to the full set of 12, here are a few rankings from our staff writers.

Rebels, Arroyo Set For Important Non-Conference Clash vs. North Texas

Rebels look to bounce back after tough loss

Finish the job.  That has to be the message coming from UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo as his Rebels prepare for a crucial high noon tilt on Saturday afternoon at Allegiant Stadium against non-conference opponent North Texas.

The progress made since Arroyo’s initial Covid ravaged 2020 season is noticeable.  That year the Rebels went 0-6, with all 6 defeats by double figures, and most games were not competitive after halftime.  Though the Rebels produced only a 2-10 record in 2021, a closer look at the numbers shows a different story.  6 of the 10 losses were by one score, including 4 to teams with a combined record of a ridiculous 45-10 (Fresno State, Utah State, San Diego State, and UTSA).  A 20-14 loss at Cal on Saturday was eerily similar to some of the gut-wrenching ones from last season.  The days of UNLV being a Mountain West pushover seem to be behind us, but can Arroyo get his troops over the hump and start winning some of the close ones?

Like many of his peers in today’s college football world, Arroyo has improved the roster through the transfer portal, adding numerous starters on both sides of the ball, including the likes of a potential breakout star in WR Ricky White.  The culture seems improved too, from the end of the Tony Sanchez era.  Ultimately however, Arroyo will be judged by his win-loss record, and Saturday’s matchup is one he badly needs to get.

The Rebels and their fan base had to be encouraged with the effort in the Bay Area last weekend.  While Cal head man Justin Wilcox is a defense first coach, holding the Golden Bears, or any Pac-12 team for that matter, to 20 points is a positive sign for a defensive unit that was shredded often last year.  On the offensive side of the ball, UNLV outgained Cal on the ground, and Doug Brumfield is showing the athleticism that earned him the starting job after a spirited preseason competition.  The special teams unit even got into the act with a successful onside kick executed after a Rebels TD in the third quarter.

Looking ahead to the matchup this weekend, it appears as though Brumfield and his skilled set of receivers may be able to take advantage of a suspect North Texas pass defense.  The Mean Green employ long-time and well-respected DC Phil Bennett, who is heading the defense for a 10th different school, to go along with one stop as a head coach.  But after a plus effort in a Week 0 win over UTEP, their defense has struggled in back-to-back games.  First, in a 48-10 torching at the hands of SMU, they allowed 432 yards and 4 TD’s to Tanner Mordecai.  Then last week the rushing defense was more of the culprit, as FCS opponent Texas Southern rushed for 219 yards on 4.7 ypc and put 27 points on the board.

The Cal game had great balance from a play calling perspective for the Rebels, 31 rush attempts to 33 pass attempts.  Much of the same will seem to be in order if success is in the cards on Saturday.  Grad transfer RB Aidan Robbins had a positive game against a usually stubborn Cal run defense and could find room to run if the offensive line fires off the ball.  The line did allow 3 sacks to the Golden Bears, but if they can provide better protection for Brumfield, the tall lefty will no doubt extend plays with his mobility until his targets can get separation downfield.

With the UNLV offense expected to put up points, the outcome may very well rest on the shoulders of the defense.  North Texas will also attempt a balanced run-pass attack, but the Rebels should be prepared for that after seeing a similar game plan last week.  Austin Aune is back for his second season as a starter for the Mean Green and has been serviceable through 3 games, completing 52.6% of his passes with a 7/2 TD to INT split.  Those 7 TD’s from Aune have gone to 7 different receivers so he has plenty of weapons to choose from.  The running game has been a two-headed monster, with Ayo Adeyi and Oscar Adaway each rushing for around 250 yards thus far and Adaway punching in 4 TD’s.  A veteran offensive line returns to protect Aune and create space for the backs.

The Rebels front seven has been able to generate pressure early on, including registering 9 sacks and multiple tackles for loss in each game.  A key to the game could be the effectiveness of that unit led by local Bishop Gorman product Adam Plant.  Senior Austin Ajiake anchors the maturing secondary and has done it all in the early going, with a sack, a tackle for loss and an interception.  One area of concern for the defense is lack of discipline.  Cal was gifted 7 first downs as a result of UNLV penalties on Saturday.  Needless to say that number needs to drop in a big way moving forward.

Saturday’s matchup is the first of a crucial four game stretch that may need to see the Rebels net 3 wins if they would like to break a bowl drought that goes back to the 2013 season.  Ironically their bowl opponent that year – North Texas.  The Mean Green defeated UNLV 36-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, their first win in the series that now stands at 4-1 in favor of the Rebels.

The schedule looks like it can be broken down into 3 remaining parts.  The next four games are all winnable considering the early season struggles of returning league champ Utah State.  A 3-1 run in that stretch and the Rebels will sit at 4-2 entering a brutal four game gauntlet against the likely three best teams in the conference (Air Force, San Diego State, Fresno State), with a trip to South Bend to face the Fighting Irish mixed in.  Truth be told it will be a challenge for the Rebs to steal a win in any of those games.  The season does close with two winnable games against teams in rebuild mode – Hawaii and Nevada.  That makes Saturday’s contest incredibly crucial towards the magic number of six.

Oddsmakers have set UNLV as a slight 3 point favorite, so this is a true toss-up.  The two teams have similar goals for the 2022 season and this is the type of game that can boost a program with a win and send you off the rails with a loss.

Look for the Rebels to put points on the board, provided they improve on their 3rd down efficiency after suffering through a 1-12 versus Cal, with an additional 1-4 on 4th down.  North Texas has enough skill position players to keep the game close, but it says here watch for UNLV to score a massive early season victory and one that could change the tenor of the Marcus Arroyo era – if they can just finish the job.

Prediction:  UNLV 40   North Texas 29

Which unfamiliar names are worth following?

Air Force — Caleb Rillos, TE

Kyle Patterson was our staff’s preseason pick to be the top tight end in the Mountain West this year and while he’s been as good as ever while on the field (88.3 overall PFF grade, first in conference), he’s also split reps and starts with the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Golden, Colorado native through two games. Rillos has mostly held his own in the early going, sporting a 60.2 run-blocking grade for the Falcons, so it’ll be interesting to see if the 50-50 timeshare holds over the next few weeks.

Wyoming — Wyatt Ekeler, S

One small change that’s been made to the most recent Cowboys depth chart is that Ekeler, the younger brother of Los Angeles Chargers star Austin Ekeler, is no longer tied to Miles Williams with an “or”. He’s played well through the team’s first three games, compiling 17 total tackles, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble, and they’ll need those fundamentals with the Air Force Falcons coming to Laramie on Friday night.

Boise State — Billy Bowens, WR

The time is now for Broncos pass catchers to step up and help Hank Bachmeier re-establish himself, but the results through two games have been decidedly mixed. Bowens, a redshirt senior, exemplifies that better than most: He led the team with ten targets last Friday but only had three catches for 50 yards, 41 of which came on one play. If he can step up and have another good game against UT Martin, it’ll make Boise State’s passing game that much more dangerous going forward.

Colorado State — Ches Jackson, OT

With the news that offensive tackle Brian Crespo-Jaquez will miss the rest of the year because of injury, the Rams are already undergoing some shuffling on the offensive line. Jackson, at least, is a veteran with a half-dozen career starts under his belt but the starting job isn’t necessarily a given. As Kelly Lytle of the Coloradoan noted, current starting center Jacob Gardner protected Carson Strong’s blindside for two years at Nevada, as well.

Nevada — Matt Freem, P

The Wolf Pack weren’t the only team in the Mountain West replacing a very good punter coming into 2022, but the dropoff from Julian Diaz to Freem hasn’t been too steep in the early going. In three games, he’s averaged a respectable 42.31 yards on 16 total punts, though Nevada may need a big game from him in order to win a potential slugfest against Iowa this weekend.

College Football Odds: Opening Early Lines, Values Week 3

College football Week 3 early odds and lines. Predicting what they might be, along with what they actually are.

The early college football lines and odds for Week 3 of the 2022 season. Where are the potential values?

What are the lines for Week 3 of the 2022 college football season – and what should they be?

After last week and all of the craziness, this gets more interesting than ever to try predicting how the public views the lines, at least right out of the gate.

As always, I give my first guess without looking, and then add the actual opening lines after.

Tough week for the Mountain West

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The second week of Mountain West football was not great and it showed in the polls with no team being ranked. The closest team coming into this week was Fresno State.

They were hosting an Oregon State team that we warned people about being sneaky good, yet they are still not ranked after topping Fresno State on the road with a gutsy going for the win on the road and not going for overtime.

Air Force is the other Mountain West team that should be ranked but they are still not yet there, for some reason. Two games in they have outscored their opponents 89-27. Yes, one was Northern Iowa but they smoked Colorado 41-10.

That beat down over a Pac-12 team allowed the Falcons to just be a team receiving votes in both the AP and coaches poll. Putting them just on the outside looking in.
