Xavier vs Providence Game Preview

Why Xavier Will Win

The Musketeers are struggling, but they’re shooting well.

They couldn’t hit anything in the loss to UConn, but before that they were more than fine long as they weren’t shooting threes. The extra passes and assists have been there, the free throw opportunities are coming, and the mistakes are kept to a relative minimum.

Providence is getting lit up from the field. Villanova went off from three in its win a few days ago, Butler shot well in its overtime loss, and teams are doing a good job of moving the ball around on the Friar D.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Providence Will Win

Xavier can’t stop anyone.

What’s the problem over this run of four losses in five games? The Musketeers are getting destroyed inside and out. UConn couldn’t hit a thing in the 74-68 Xavier win, and a few days later in the rematch went off from three.

St. John’s hit 54% from the field, DePaul was on fire at home, and back in late January, Providence was able to come up with timely threes to get by 65-62.

It’s normally a great defensive team that forces a ton of mistakes, but Providence isn’t turning the ball over lately – just 15 turnovers in the last two games – while doing a strong job on the offensive boards.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

The Xavier slide continues.

It has the ability to crank up the production and clamp down defensively, but the defense hasn’t been strong enough.

Providence finally showed it’s vulnerable at home with the loss to Villanova a few days ago, but this will be the opposite of the 89-84 game. This will be low scoring and a grind, but the Friars will be on the right side with the offense moving the ball around well.

Tennessee vs Missouri Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Missouri has stopped scoring.

It lost four of its last five games and 13 of the last 17 mainly because there’s just no pop. It’s not hitting from three, it’s scuffling to get to 40% from the field – and wasn’t close to getting there in losses to Arkansas and Mississippi State – and it can’t get 60 points lately.

The Tigers aren’t manufacturing points by getting to the line, they don’t come up with enough steals and turnovers to get on the move, and rebounding isn’t there to come up with second chance points.

Other than that, everything is going great.

Tennessee lost to Arkansas on Saturday, but other than that power outage the offense has been fine, the assists are there for easy points, and it shouldn’t take much to get by.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Missouri Will Win

What is Missouri doing right? It’s doing a great job at guarding the three.

The defense has its moments and isn’t allowing a lot of offensive rebounds. It needs to keep the score low and it has to take advantage of every possible scoring chance.

Tennessee is coming off a 48 point outing against Arkansas when the shots weren’t falling and there was absolutely nothing happening from three, hitting just four of its 24 tries – and that’s where it starts.

Missouri has to do what it does when it comes to guarding from the outside. Tennessee has occasionally gone dead cold on the road – like in losses to LSU and Texas – and the Tigers have to force that, but …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Again, Missouri just doesn’t score.

It took the intensity of a great day from Arkansas to keep Tennessee’s offense down, and that’s not happening for a full 40 minutes in Columbia.

It’ll be a good first half, but there won’t be any Tiger threes to matter and there won’t be enough free throws to slow down the momentum.

Michigan State vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

What’s going wrong for Michigan State over this run of four losses in the last five games?

It’s not all that bad from the field and the defense has been relatively solid. The Spartans still have the best three point defense in the Big Ten, there’s a nice inside defensive presence, and the games haven’t been getting out of hand.

Iowa is doing a lot of things right, but it doesn’t do enough on the defensive boards. Michigan State has to come strong on the offensive boards and get lots and lots of second chance points.

Penn State was able to beat the Hawkeyes a few weeks ago with 52 rebounds and 14 on the offensive side. That was a two overtime game, though – Maryland was able to come up with 11 offensive boards, and Ohio State just got 11, too, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Iowa Will Win

Yeah, yeah, yeah, answer the question.

What’s going wrong for Michigan State over this run of four losses in the last five games?

It just doesn’t seem like it knows how to score.

There’s no ball movement, there aren’t enough threes, and there isn’t enough happening to force free throws for easy points. It also doesn’t help that the D doesn’t force mistakes – it hasn’t come up with double-digit turnovers in four of the last five games.

Iowa should be able to bomb its way through this.

This isn’t a perfect Hawkeye team, but it’s going to move fast, shoot a lot of threes, and keep the offensive production going. Michigan State hasn’t shown the ability to keep up any sort of decent pace.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Can Michigan State do anything from three?

Iowa will have 70 points getting off the bus, and Michigan State can’t just rely on coming up with a stop here and there. It has to play along, and it hasn’t shown the ability to do that lately.

The Spartans aren’t going to dominate the rebounding margin like it needs to, and it’s not going to get that one scoring burst needed after hanging around deep into the second half.

Arkansas vs Florida Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

There was a blip against Alabama on the road last week, but other than that, the team has been on fire winning 11 of its last 12 games with a new level of offensive power.

The offensive rebounds are there when the those aren’t dropping, the defense has been amazing at stopping the three – no one’s getting into a groove lately against this D – and Florida has one big, big problem …

The Gators are’t good enough on the boards.

They’re the worst in the SEC in defensive rebounds, and the Hogs will take advantage of that in key spots.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Florida Will Win

Florida is at home.

The team is just 1-4 in the last five games away from Gainesville and it won its last six at home including a 63-62 thriller over Auburn.

No, this isn’t the best shooting team, but it’s been good from the outside at home, the ball movement has been great, and there were a whole lot of steals in the last few wins.

Arkansas needs to get on the move and it needs to generate easy baskets considering it doesn’t make threes – it takes them, but doesn’t make them.

However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Florida doesn’t shoot well enough overall.

Yeah, it’s playing great at home, and yeah, beating Auburn is a big deal, but for the most part the offense is struggling from the field against the good teams – even when Florida is at home.

The combination of the problems from the field and the lack of defensive rebounding will be just enough to let Arkansas slip by late helped by a few key defensive stops.

Villanova vs UConn Game Preview

Why Villanova Will Win

The Wildcats are on fire.

They can’t beat Marquette, but they’re 15-2 – those two losses were to the Golden Eagles – in their last 17 games including an 85-74 win over UConn in early February.

They’re not just relying on the threes like they normally do, but they’re getting them.

They’re crushing it on the free throw line and were rolling overall from the field against everyone but that M team.

UConn doesn’t shoot enough threes, and it commits way too many fouls – both major problems to try beating Villanova right now.

Really, how good are the Wildcats shooting? They’re No. 1 in the nation on the free throw line and averaging nine made threes per game.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why UConn Will Win

Villanova doesn’t have enough of an inside defensive presence and it’s about to have a problem on the boards.

UConn only came up with three blocks in the first meeting, and that’s an aberration. Even worse, it had 19 rebounds – the next game against that Marquette team that Villanova can’t handle, UCOnn had 43 boards in the win.

It’s not that UConn is unbeatable at home but it only loses when it can’t make anything. It’s 12-0 when it hit more than 32% from the field at home, and 0-2 when it doesn’t.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

UConn will be looking to make a massive statement.

It might be playing well lately, but beating Villanova will mean everything to make a push in the Big East regular season title hunt. Lose, and forget about catching Providence and all but blow off getting by Villanova.

UConn will shoot just well enough overall – and will be good enough on the boards – to win in a tense, entertaining fight.

Oklahoma vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Yeah, Oklahoma is having a few issues on a three game losing streak.

Yeah, Texas Tech is playing well on a three game winning streak.

Both of those runs started right after OU whacked the Red Raiders by 15 in Norman.

The Sooners were fantastic from the field, did a great job on the move, and Texas Tech was totally miserable from three.

They did a great job on the free throw line, too, and they’ll have to do all of that again.

Only Kansas shoots better than OU in the Big 12, the three point defense is the real deal, and only Texas is stronger on the free throw line. If all of those elements can come together again, the Sooners could bust through this mini-slump.

So …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Tech Will Win

What’s Oklahoma’s problem lately?

It’s shooting great and it continues to be excellent on the free throw line, but the defense has gone bye-bye.

Oh, it’s still strong at guarding the three, but it allowed the last three teams on the slate to combine to hit close to 60% from the field.

What’s Texas Tech doing that’s so right lately?

It’s making up for the inconsistencies in a few spots by coming up with a ton of steals and transition points. The last three Red Raider opponents combined for 63 fouls and 44 turnovers.

Oklahoma should be good for about 20 would and at least 12 turnovers, but …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech just can’t hit threes.

It can rebound, and the defense can rise up in key moments, but can it overcome the lack of threes if Oklahoma gets hot again from the outside?

No, but that’s not going to be a problem. Those 13 threes were the most OU made in the game wins a mid-December win over Arkansas. It’ll make its share of three pointers, but not enough to rise up over a great-shooting day from the Red Raiders inside.

Kansas State vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

We did this back in late January and Kansas State gave the Jayhawks all they could handle. It might have been a 78-75 Kansas win, but the Wildcats did a great job from the field and locked down from three.

No one in the Big 12 takes more threes than Kansas State, only a few teams are better in the nation at guarding the outside, and there aren’t enough mistakes to give away easy points.

The team can bomb its way back into games and keep up with just about anyone, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Kansas Will Win

The Kansas State interior presence isn’t there.

There aren’t any blocks and rebounding against the Jayhawks will be a massive problem. Kansas scores in bunches, it’s fantastic at coming up with easy points on the inside, and be shocked if there isn’t a massive difference in rebounding.

The offense is pumping all while the defense is playing as well as it has all season. Again, it’ll roll on the boards and it should lock down against the three – Kansas State lost even though it made ten in the first meeting. And …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State isn’t hitting ten threes this time.

Kansas is too good from they field, Kansas State is too limited when it’s not on fire from the outside, and to hammer this home, the rebounding.

There will be too many Wildcat one-and-dones as the game starts to slip away in the second half.

Alabama vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama is going to keep on shooting threes. That’s what it does.

It threw a whopping 40 up against Kentucky in the loss a few days ago – making 14 – and it’s going to stay on brand against a Vanderbilt defense that isn’t going to bomb away if it needs to keep up.

The Commodores have had their moments from the outside, but can they find enough other ways to score if they’re not making 12 threes – the eight they average per game?

They’re not good enough from the free throw line – even though they get there a lot – they don’t come up with enough offensive rebounds, and they’re not going to keep up if the Crimson Tide stay on brand.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Vanderbilt can guard the three.

It got rocked by Auburn last week, but for the most part it’s great at keeping teams to around 35% or under from three. It has to do that at home – and being in the Gymnasium matters.

It’s 0-5 on the road in its last five games and won its last four at home.

The offense doesn’t turn the ball over that much, and Alabama will put the Commodores on the line a bazillion times. Yeah, the threes will come raining down, but the Tide all about quantity over quality – they miss a ton from the outside, and …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen
