Tennessee vs Missouri Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

The defense has been the real deal.

The Missouri offense hasn’t always been consistent – the running game has to do more – but the other side has been stuffing everything on the ground and allowed over 300 yards of total O just once in the last six games. That one time? The battle in a 26-22 loss to the Georgia team that just took down the Vols.

For all of the high-powered fun from the Tennessee attack, it’s a whole other animal when it can run a bit. The team runs so many plays that getting to 40 carries is the norm, so it’s more about yards per carry than total yards.

The Tiger defensive front leads the SEC in tackles for loss, it’s holding up well against the run, and it all works with an offense that hangs on to the ball for 34 minutes a game.

Hendon Hooker can’t put points on the board from the sidelines.

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Tennessee Will Win

Missouri doesn’t have the firepower.

The passing game is fine. It’ll hit 200 yards, the offense should be just balanced enough to keep things moving a little bit, and again, the time of possession battle should be dominated by the road side.

However, the Vols should be able to take the top off the Tiger secondary. The Mizzou defense is among the best in the SEC, but it hasn’t faced anyone who can bomb away other than – maybe – Georgia.

The Dawgs threw for over 300 yards – it can be done – and Hooker and company should be able to connect on a few deep shots that just barely missed in last week’s loss.

Everything is still on the table for Tennessee. Win out, and there’s still a great shot of getting into the College Football Playoff which means …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

If it’s possible, there’s no chance the foot will be taken off the gas.

The Tiger defense really is that good, but sort of like Tennessee’s performance against Kentucky, a few big early plays will set the tone. The other side will have its moments – Missouri really will seem like it always has the ball – but the explosion of the Vols will return.

Tennessee vs Missouri Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Missouri has stopped scoring.

It lost four of its last five games and 13 of the last 17 mainly because there’s just no pop. It’s not hitting from three, it’s scuffling to get to 40% from the field – and wasn’t close to getting there in losses to Arkansas and Mississippi State – and it can’t get 60 points lately.

The Tigers aren’t manufacturing points by getting to the line, they don’t come up with enough steals and turnovers to get on the move, and rebounding isn’t there to come up with second chance points.

Other than that, everything is going great.

Tennessee lost to Arkansas on Saturday, but other than that power outage the offense has been fine, the assists are there for easy points, and it shouldn’t take much to get by.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Missouri Will Win

What is Missouri doing right? It’s doing a great job at guarding the three.

The defense has its moments and isn’t allowing a lot of offensive rebounds. It needs to keep the score low and it has to take advantage of every possible scoring chance.

Tennessee is coming off a 48 point outing against Arkansas when the shots weren’t falling and there was absolutely nothing happening from three, hitting just four of its 24 tries – and that’s where it starts.

Missouri has to do what it does when it comes to guarding from the outside. Tennessee has occasionally gone dead cold on the road – like in losses to LSU and Texas – and the Tigers have to force that, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Again, Missouri just doesn’t score.

It took the intensity of a great day from Arkansas to keep Tennessee’s offense down, and that’s not happening for a full 40 minutes in Columbia.

It’ll be a good first half, but there won’t be any Tiger threes to matter and there won’t be enough free throws to slow down the momentum.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Tennessee vs Missouri Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Missouri can’t come up with a third down stop.

The offense has been dangerous enough to win games, but the D can’t get off the field. Dead last in the SEC in total D, it’s been roasted but all three FBS teams on the schedule and even gave up close 300 rushing yards to SE Missouri State.

Kentucky and Boston College each moved the chains at will, and Mizzou allowed SEMO and Central Michigan to each convert 45% of their chances.

Tennessee might not be doing a whole lot on the money downs, but they’re running the ball relatively well and should be able to rumble on the porous Tiger front.

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Missouri Will Win

Tennessee isn’t controlling the clock at all. That’s partly by design in the new offense, but in a game like this against a struggling D, being able to dominate the tempo would be nice.

The Vol D hasn’t been all that bad overall but it helps that two of the games were against Bowling Green and Tennessee Tech, and Pitt’s Kenny Pickett was able to throw for over 300.

Mizzou has to keep this balanced. Tyler Badie is one of the SEC’s best all-around backs, and Connor Bazelak is averaging exactly 300 passing yards per game. The O is there …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Missouri defense do anything?

Just when Tennessee was finally figuring out that Hendon Hooker was the team’s best quarterback, he got knocked out of the Florida game and is questionable.

The Vols have some nice backs and a good running game, but can Joe Milton – if he really is the man at QB – be accurate enough to get this done?

Missouri’s offense will be a wee bit sharper at home in a fun shootout.

Why Missouri Will Win

Missouri kept on pressing.

It might have been wiped out by Alabama in a 28-3 first half, but QB Shawn Robinson – the former TCU transfer – stepped in for Connor Bazelak and hit 19-of-25 passes for 185 yards and a score. It was way too much too late – the game was over – but the Tiger offense has receiving weapons.

Yeah, the defense got ripped up through the air early on, but the line held up against the run allowing just 3.1 yards per carry and stuffed everything run by anyone other than Najee Harris. Tennessee’s ground game was okay against South Carolina, but it was hardly anything special.

The Vols struggled to move the ball – converting just 1-of-12 third down tries – and they don’t have Bama’s firepower or skill.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Tennessee Will Win

Can Mizzou run the ball at all?

Anything that happens against Alabama is a bad sample, but there wasn’t much of anything happening against the Tide defensive front. Tennessee has a strong enough line to keep the Tigers from going off, doing a strong job of stuffing South Carolina and with just enough of a pass rush to be a problem.

Being mistake-free is everything for the Vols. They weren’t great against the Gamecocks, and they had to hold on, but they didn’t turn the ball over. That starts with one of the SEC’s better lines.

Missouri can’t be given easy chances.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri is going to look a whole lot better than it did against the Tide, with more production on the lines and a sharper overall day from the offense to keep this close.

However, Tennessee isn’t going to be nearly as miserable on third downs as it was against South Carolina, and the team will do a better job of controlling the clock and the game.

It’ll be a fight, but the Vols will get to 2-0 for the first time in three years.
