Why Oregon Will Win

UCLA’s defense has been outstanding at home, but it had issues on the road before that.

No, Oregon isn’t USC or Arizona, but it’s been feisty at home. It doesn’t turn the ball over or make a ton of big mistakes in Eugene, and lately it’s shooting well at home – even if there have been problems overall on the road.

The Ducks are 16-3 when they get to 42% from the field. That includes the overtime thriller of a win over UCLA back in mid-January.

How did they do it? They were brilliant defensively in key stretches, did a little more on the line, and they held down UCLA from three.

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA doesn’t take a ton of shots from deep, but they’ve been on lately with ten of them made against both Washington and Washington State. It’s not going to come up with double-digit threes against the Ducks, but it’s going to make them worry.

Can Oregon keep the score low enough to have a shot? UCLA will be cold just enough in key spots for the Ducks to to survive in a second straight thriller between the two.

Why Belmont Will Win

The Bruins lost to Murray State 82-60 back in mid-January, lost to Morehead State a few days later, and they’ve been on fire ever since.

On a ten-game winning streak, they’re cranking up the offense with lots and lots and lots of passes for easy baskets.

Belmont leads the nation in assists, the offense is the best in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring, and not shockingly, it’s among the best in the nation in field goal percentage averaging close to 50% from the field.

Murray State was able to limit those passes and extra plays the first time around, and not shockingly it was one of the team’s worst shooting days of the season.

Keep the ball moving on the Racers – it is possible – and this will be a fight.

Why Murray State Will Win

Murray State has won 16 straight since losing at Auburn for a reason.

Belmont comes up with a ton of steals and takeaways, but Murray State doesn’t turn the ball over.

The Bruins don’t get a lot of offensive rebounds because they shoot so well, but they’re going to struggle on the defensive side. Overall they’re good on the glass, but Murray State out rebounds teams by close to eight per game.

The Racer defense is the best in the OVC, and the team still won the first time around even after allowing Belmont to hit 41% from the field.

What’s Going To Happen

Belmont is playing well, and it should be able to shoot well enough to keep this close throughout. However, Murray State is just too good overall, especially at home.

UT Martin was able to keep things within ten points back in late January, but that was about it. The Racers aren’t just 14-0 in CFSB; they’re dominant.

It’ll take a while to get there, but the run will come late to pull away.

Ohio State, for all of the good things it does defensively, doesn’t force a ton of turnovers.

There’s not a ton of pressure and there aren’t the rebounds to go along with the defensive stops.

Illinois is back at home.

Outside of a double overtime loss to Purdue, Illinois has owned Assembly Hall winning 11 of 13 games – No. 2 Arizona was the only other loss.

It’s all about shooting percentage for the Illini. They’re 17-0 when they hit 43% or better and 2-7 when they don’t.

Only nine teams have been able to get to 43% on the Ohio State defense. Illinois – helped by its play on the inside – will be the tenth.

The Dons can play.

The offense might have stalled in the loss to Saint Mary’s, but it perked right back up to hang 104 on Pacific.

It’s a great team on the boards – it’s the best in the West Coast Conference on the defensive glass – and the threes come in bunches. It’s the type of team that could give Gonzaga a whole lot of issues.

How do you beat the No. 1 team in the land? You have to be red hot from the outside, create a slew of turnovers, and make it a crazy back-and-forth fight if the Don offense can keep up.

Come up with a lot of assists, and things work out well for the Gophers.

They made 20 assist against Penn State, and won. They came up with 22 against Northwestern, and won. They have a hard time from three, they don’t generate enough takeaways to come up with transition points, and offensive rebounds are a rumor. But pass the ball around well and good things happen.

Why Kentucky Will Win

Kentucky leads the SEC in fewest turnovers.

It doesn’t make enough mistakes to matter – the 15 given up to LSU the first time was a bit of an anomaly – and more than anything else, the shooting has been great.

The offense doesn’t rely on the three, but those have been falling. The offensive rebounds are off the charts – 48 over the last three games – helping the team to hit 50% of its shots or more in four of the last nine games and in seven of the last 13.

LSU’s defense has struggled lately.

Great throughout the year and terrific at stopping the three, LSU hasn’t been great inside with team after team scoring a tad too easily.

LSU is 17-1 when teams shoot under 42% against its D, and it’s 2-7 when it doesn’t.

Kentucky has only shot under 42% six times and only once was at home – a 77-70 win over Vanderbilt.

Kentucky will be great in the rematch.

Why Tulane Will Win

Tulane is shooting the lights out lately.

It couldn’t miss from anywhere in a win over Tulsa, and it was fantastic against USF and Temple when it moved the ball around got a whole lot of easy baskets.

The team wins when it shoots well and loses when it doesn’t – it’s not good at overcoming poor shooting days. It’s 8-1 when it makes 48% or more from the field, and that one loss came way back in November.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Houston is just that good defensively – again, it’s No. 1 in the nation in field goal defense – but if Tulane can just get to 45% and then rely on its own solid D, it’ll be right in this at home.

TCU gets a whole lot of offensive rebounds because there’s a whole lot of misses.

The offense struggles to get to 70 points when it’s not owning the free throw line. It needs to attack the rim and hope for a whole lot of chances on the line.

Texas won 73-50 in the first meeting because TCU couldn’t do anything from three and hit just 12-of-21 chances on the free throw line.

One good Texas offensive burst at home should be enough to end this.

Why Duke Will Win

Full focus won’t be an issue after the 69-68 loss to the Cavaliers a few weeks ago.

The Blue Devils didn’t crank it up until it was too late, but it shot relatively well, was great on the free throw line, and the defense was terrific on the outside.

Everything has kicked in since then with four straight wins helped by tons of free throws, a whole lot of dominance on the offensive boards, and with the offense working better than it did against the slow and stodgy Cavaliers.

Basically, it’s statement time to get by the team’s only loss since mid-January. But …

Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia is usually extra Virginia at home.

It’s not unbeatable in John Paul Jones, but the defense has been a rock from three. The offense isn’t hitting a thing from three lately, but the free throw shooting and rebounds are making up for it.

The Cavaliers are moving the ball around well – as always – with ten or more assists in 14 of the last 15 games. Duke might be rolling, but the defense is giving up a whole ton of extra passes for scores.

There might not be a whole lot of transition points allowed, but just assume Virginia will come up with at least 15 assists.

What’s Going To Happen

The Blue Devils will get bogged down way too much, but they’ll maintain their energy and focus for a full 40 minutes to get back at the Cavaliers.

They’ll be just fine in the half court game, they’ll own the inside, and this time around they’ll get the big stops when needed, especially on the defensive boards.

Duke gave up 11 offensive rebounds on in the first meeting. That’s not happening again.
