Ohio State vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes might be having their rough moments over the last several weeks, but the defense has been a rock – allowing fewer than 70 points in five of the last six games – all while shooting relatively well.

This is a painfully inconsistent team from three lately, but Illinois has had an even rougher time from the outside. Even when Ohio State has been off from three – a recent Iowa game excluded – it hasn’t been all that bad. Illinois, on the other hand, isn’t hitting enough threes even though it’s bombing away.

The Illini turn the ball over way too much and make too many mistakes, but …

Why Illinois Will Win

Ohio State, for all of the good things it does defensively, doesn’t force a ton of turnovers.

There’s not a ton of pressure and there aren’t the rebounds to go along with the defensive stops.

It’s an okay rebounding team, but Illinois is dominant on the boards.

The Illinois are second in the Big Ten and 14th in the nation in rebounding margin, and it should be able to clean things up if Ohio State isn’t great from the field – especially if it’s struggling from the outside.

It’s been a rocky run for the Illini without a whole lot of consistency overall over the last several weeks, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Illinois is back at home.

Outside of a double overtime loss to Purdue, Illinois has owned Assembly Hall winning 11 of 13 games – No. 2 Arizona was the only other loss.

It’s all about shooting percentage for the Illini. They’re 17-0 when they hit 43% or better and 2-7 when they don’t.

Only nine teams have been able to get to 43% on the Ohio State defense. Illinois – helped by its play on the inside – will be the tenth.

Why Ohio State Will Win

You don’t think Ohio State will be a wee bit motivated to show that the near-collapse against Indiana was an aberration?

The Buckeyes might have struggled late, but they were sloppy, there were too many mistakes, and they still ended up putting 42 points on the board in the win.

The offense is still the most explosive in the Big Ten, it got Master Teague and the running game rolling, and for all of the problems last week defensively, the pass rush was strong and the run D stifling.

The defensive front hasn’t been a brick wall throughout the season, but IU finished with -1 net yards on the ground – there was nowhere to go.

Yes, Justin Fields made a few bad decisions, and yes, he threw three interceptions, but he also ran for 78 yards and a touchdown and threw for 300 yards and two scores.

He’s still pretty good.

Why Illinois Will Win

All of a sudden, the Illinois running game is rolling.

It ripped up Rutgers for 338 yards, hit Nebraska for 285 yards, and the team has found something in junior Chase Brown, who ran for 131 yards against the Scarlet Knights and followed it up with 110 yards and two scores against Nebraska.

It also helps to have Brandon Peters back, a veteran quarterback who was banged up in the loss to Wisconsin, missed three games, and returned to hit 72% of his passes for 205 yards and a score with a rushing touchdown against the Huskers. He’s not going to be Michael Penix and throw for 491 yards and five scores, but the Ohio State secondary has been a problem.

Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle went off for seven catches for 218 yards and three scores. This is the game for Illinois WR Josh Imatorbhebhe to have a turn and finally have his breakout game – he’ll at least get his chances.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Illinois has played well over the last few weeks and blew past 440 yards in total offense in three of its last four games. Ohio State, though, will look to tighten up and make a statement defensively.

Fields will make amends for last week’s mistakes, the D will be solid against the run – but won’t be air tight – and the Buckeyes will win their tenth straight in the series and 13th in the last 14 meetings.

Ohio State vs Illinois

Thursday, September 3
Memorial Stadium, Champaign, IL

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: The Buckeyes will struggle early on as they try to win the Fiesta Bowl as they press a little out of the gate, and then things will get back to normal early in the second quarter.

Illinois might have a slew of transfers coming in for the defensive front, but it won’t be enough as the Ohio State offensive line starts banging away and taking over. The big plays will come as Justin Fields and company start to score quickly, but the time of possession battle will lean the other way in the second half.

It’ll be more of a methodical win for OSU than sensational.

First Thought Prediction: Ohio State 41, Illinois 17
First Thought Line Guess: Ohio State -27.5

Big Ten 2020 Composite Schedule, 10 Most Interesting Games

Indiana vs Wisconsin

Friday, September 4
Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, WI

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: These two haven’t played since 2017 with Wisconsin winning the last ten games since dropping a stunner in 2002.

How ugly has the series been? Over the last five games, Wisconsin has won by an average of 60 to 12 with the low mark an 83-20 squeaker back in 2010.

This year’s Hoosier team, though, should be more of a problem for Bucky.

QB Michael Penix and the offensive backfield should give the Badger D fits for about a half, and the lines are just strong enough to hold up. But the reworked UW O line will take over and super-recruit RB Jalen Berger gets into a groove.

First Thought Prediction: Wisconsin 30, Indiana 16
First Thought Line Guess: Wisconsin -10

Minnesota vs Michigan State

Saturday, September 5
Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, MI

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: It’s the opener of the Mel Tucker era at Michigan State as his Spartans get a Minnesota team looking to prove that 2019 wasn’t any sort of a fluke.

Can the Gopher passing game get hot early on without star receivers Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman around anymore? It’ll be okay, but the running game will struggle against a Spartan defensive front will be a rock right out of the gate.

On the flip side, the Michigan State offense won’t be able to take advantage of a good defensive performance as drive after drive stalls. Minnesota will pull it out on a late field goal in a rough game with points and good offensive plays coming at a premium.

First Thought Prediction: Minnesota 20, Michigan State 19
First Thought Line Guess: Michigan State -3.5
